We give necessary conditions for the mixing problem in bipartite case, which are independent of eigenvalues and based on algebraic-geometric invariants of the bipartite states. One implication of our results is that for some special bipartite mixed states, only special mixed states in a measure zero set can be used to mix to get them. The results indicate for many physical problems on composite quantum systems the description based on majorization of eigenvalues is not sufficient
Using four-wave mixing in a hot atomic vapor, we generate a pair of entangled twin beams in the microsecond pulsed regime near the D1 line of $^{85}$Rb, making it compatible with commonly used quantum memory techniques. The beams are generated in the bright and vacuum-squeezed regimes, requiring two separate methods of analysis, without and with local oscillators, respectively. We report a noise reduction of up to $3.8\pm 0.2$ dB below the standard quantum limit in the pulsed regime and a level of entanglement that violates an Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen inequality.
In many quantum information processing protocols, entangled states shared among parties are an important resource. In this article, we study how bipartite states may be distributed in the context of a quantum network limited by timing constraints. We explore various tasks that plausibly arise in this context, and characterize the achievability of several of these in settings where only one-way communication is allowed. We provide partial results in the case where two-way communication is allowed. This builds on earlier work on summoning single and bipartite systems.
We consider continuous-time quantum walks on distance-regular graphs of small diameter. Using results about the existence of complex Hadamard matrices in association schemes, we determine which of these graphs have quantum walks that admit uniform mixing. First we apply a result due to Chan to show that the only strongly regular graphs that admit instantaneous uniform mixing are the Paley graph of order nine and certain graphs corresponding to regular symmetric Hadamard matrices with constant diagonal. Next we prove that if uniform mixing occurs on a bipartite graph X with n vertices, then n i…
The properties of some complex many body systems can be modeled by introducing in the dissipative dynamics of each single component a set of kinetic constraints that depend on the state of the neighbor systems. Here, we characterize this kind of dynamics for two quantum systems whose independent dissipative evolutions are defined by a Lindblad equation. The constraints are introduced through a set of projectors that restrict the action of each single dissipative Lindblad channel to the state of the other system. Conditions that guaranty a classical interpretation of the kinetic constraints are…
Certain quantum information tasks require entanglement of assistance, namely a reduction of a tripartite entangled state to a bipartite entangled state via local measurements. We establish that 'concurrence of assistance' (CoA) identifies capabilities and limitations to producing pure bipartite entangled states from pure tripartite entangled states and prove that CoA is an entanglement monotone for $(2\times2\times n)$-dimensional pure states. Moreover, if the CoA for the pure tripartite state is at least as large as the concurrence of the desired pure bipartite state, then the former may be t…
Negativity is regarded as an important measure of entanglement in quantum information theory. In contrast to other measures of entanglement, it is easily computable for bipartite states in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper, based on the negativity and realignment, we provide a set of entanglement-sharing constraints for multipartite states, where the entanglement is not necessarily limited to bipartite and pure states, thus aiding in the quantification of constraints for entanglement-sharing. These may find applications in studying many-body systems.
In this work we study an inverse dynamical problem for a bipartite quantum system governed by the time local master equation: to find the class of generators which give rise to a certain time evolution with the constraint of fixed reduced states (marginals). The compatibility of such choice with a global unitary evolution is considered. For the non unitary case we propose a systematic method to reconstruct examples of master equations and address them to different physical scenarios.
We experimentally verify the link existing between entanglement and the amount of wave-particle duality in a bipartite quantum system, with superconducting qubits in the IBM Q quantum computer. We consider both pure and mixed states, and study the influence of state purity on the observation of the complementarity "triality" relation of Jakob and Bergou. This work confirms the quantitative completion of local Bohr's complementarity principle by the nonlocal quantum entanglement typical of a truly bipartite quantum system.
We report investigation on quantum discord in classical second-order interference. In particular, we theoretically show that a bipartite state with D = 0.311 of discord can be generated via classical second-order interference. We also experimentally verify the theory by obtaining D = 0.197 +- 0.060 of non-zero discord state. Together with the fact that non-classicalities originated from physical constraints and information theoretic perspectives are not equivalent, this result provides an insight to understand the nature of quantum discord.
In bipartite quantum systems commutation relations between the Hamiltonian of each subsystem and the interaction impose fundamental constraints on the dynamics of each partition. Here we investigate work, heat and entropy production in bipartite systems characterized by particular commutators between their local Hamiltonians and the interaction operator. We consider the formalism of [Weimer, EPL, 83:30008, 2008], in which heat (work) is identified with energy changes that (do not) alter the local von Neumann entropy, as observed in an effective local measurement basis. We demonstrate the conse…
We study the relationship between entanglement and parametric resonance in a system of two coupled time-dependent oscillators. As a measure of bipartite entanglement, we calculate the linear entropy for the reduced density operator, from which we study the entanglement dynamics. In particular, we find that the bipartite entanglement increases in time up to a maximal mixing scenario, when the set of auxiliary dynamical parameters are under parametric resonance. Moreover, we obtain a closed relationship between the correlations in the ground state, the localisation of the Wigner function in phas…
Device-independent self-testing allows to uniquely characterize the quantum state shared by untrusted parties (up to local isometries) by simply inspecting their correlations, and requiring only minimal assumptions, namely a no-signaling constraint on the untrusted parties and the validity of quantum mechanics. The device-independent approach exploits the fact that certain non-local correlations can be uniquely achieved by measurements on a particular quantum state. We can think of these correlations as a "classical fingerprint" of the self-tested quantum state. In this work, we answer affirma…
We show that some tripartite quantum correlations are inexplicable by any causal theory involving bipartite nonclassical common causes and unlimited shared randomness. This constitutes a device-independent proof that Nature's nonlocality is fundamentally at least tripartite in every conceivable physical theory - no matter how exotic. To formalize this claim we are compelled to substitute Svetlichny's historical definition of genuine tripartite nonlocality with a novel theory-agnostic definition tied to the framework of Local Operations and Shared Randomness (LOSR). A companion article [PRA. 10…
For linear combinations of quantum product averages in an arbitrary bipartite state, we derive new quantum Bell-form and CHSH-form inequalities with the right-hand sides expressed in terms of a bipartite state. This allows us to specify in a general setting bipartite state properties sufficient for the validity of a classical CHSH-form inequality and the perfect correlation form of the original Bell inequality for any bounded quantum observables. We also introduce a new general condition on a bipartite state and quantum observables sufficient for the validity of the original Bell inequality, i…
Density operators are one of the key ingredients of quantum theory. They can be constructed in two ways: via a convex sum of `doubled kets' (i.e. mixing), and by tracing out part of a `doubled' two-system ket (i.e. dilation). Both constructions can be iterated, yielding new mathematical species that have already found applications outside physics. However, as we show in this paper, the iterated constructions no longer yield the same mathematical species. Hence, the constructions `mixing' and `dilation' themselves are by no means equivalent. Concretely, when applying the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomo…
What fundamental constraints characterize the relationship between a mixture $ρ= \sum_i p_i ρ_i$ of quantum states, the states $ρ_i$ being mixed, and the probabilities $p_i$? What fundamental constraints characterize the relationship between prior and posterior states in a quantum measurement? In this paper we show that there are many surprisingly strong constraints on these mixing and measurement processes that can be expressed simply in terms of the eigenvalues of the quantum states involved. These constraints capture in a succinct fashion what it means to say that a quantum measurement acqu…
Extending the scheme developed for a single mode of the electromagnetic field in the preceding paper ``Structure of multiphoton quantum optics. I. Canonical formalism and homodyne squeezed states'', we introduce two-mode nonlinear canonical transformations depending on two heterodyne mixing angles. They are defined in terms of hermitian nonlinear functions that realize heterodyne superpositions of conjugate quadratures of bipartite systems. The canonical transformations diagonalize a class of Hamiltonians describing non degenerate and degenerate multiphoton processes. We determine the coherent…

How to introduce thermodynamics to quantum mechanics ? Among from numerous possibilities of solving this task, the simple choice is here: The conventional von Neumann equation deals with a density operator whose probability weights are time independent. Because there is no reason apart from the reversible quantum mechanics that these weights have to be time independent, this constraint is waived, thus making possible to introduce thermodynamical concepts to quantum mechanics. %\textcolor{green}{ This procedure is similar to that of Lindblad's equation, but different on principle. %\textcolor{r…
We demonstrate the existence of general constraints on distributed quantum correlations, which impose a trade-off on bipartite and multipartite entanglement at once. For all N-mode Gaussian states under permutation invariance, we establish exactly a monogamy inequality, stronger than the traditional one, that by recursion defines a proper measure of genuine N-partite entanglement. Strong monogamy holds as well for subsystems of arbitrary size, and the emerging multipartite entanglement measure is found to be scale invariant. We unveil its operational connection with the optimal fidelity of con…
Entanglement plays an important role in quantum communication, algorithms, and error correction. Schmidt coefficients are correlated to the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix. These eigenvalues are used in Von Neumann entropy to quantify the amount of the bipartite entanglement. In this paper, we map the Schmidt basis and the associated coefficients to quantum circuits to generate random quantum states. We also show that it is possible to adjust the entanglement between subsystems by changing the quantum gates corresponding to the Schmidt coefficients. In this manner, random quantum sta…
