We propose a general framework for investigating a large class of stabilization problems in Markovian quantum systems. Building on the notions of invariant and attractive quantum subsystem, we characterize attractive subspaces by exploring the structure of the invariant sets for the dynamics. Our general analysis results are exploited to assess the ability of open-loop Hamiltonian and output-feedback control strategies to synthesize Markovian generators which stabilize a target subsystem, subspace, or pure-state. In particular, we provide an algebraic characterization of the manifold of stabilizable pure states in arbitrary finite-dimensional Markovian systems, that leads to a constructive strategy for designing the relevant controllers. Implications for stabilization of entangled pure states are addressed by example.
In this article, we investigate the problem of engineering synchronization in non-Markovian quantum systems. First, a time-convoluted linear quantum stochastic differential equation is derived which describes the Heisenberg evolution of a localized quantum system driven by multiple colored noise inputs. Then, we define quantum expectation synchronization in an augmented system consisting of two subsystems. We prove that, for two homogenous subsystems, synchronization can always be synthesized without designing direct Hamiltonian coupling given that the degree of non-Markovianity is below a cer…
It has been found that Markovian quantum dissipative processes, described by the Lindblad equation, may have attractive steady-state manifolds, in which dissipation and decoherence can play a positive role to quantum information processing. In this article, we show that such attractive steady-state manifolds with the same positive features as in Markovian dissipative processes can exist in the non-Markovian dissipative processes. Our finding indicates that the dissipation-assisted schemes implemented in the Markovian systems can be directly generalized to the non-Markovian systems.
We characterize the dynamical behavior of continuous-time, Markovian quantum systems with respect to a subsystem of interest. Markovian dynamics describes a wide class of open quantum systems of relevance to quantum information processing, subsystem encodings offering a general pathway to faithfully represent quantum information. We provide explicit linear-algebraic characterizations of the notion of invariant and noiseless subsystem for Markovian master equations, under different robustness assumptions for model-parameter and initial-state variations. The stronger concept of an attractive qua…
In this note, we are concerned with dark modes in a class of non-Markovian open quantum systems. Based on a microscopic model, a time-convoluted linear quantum stochastic differential equation and an output equation are derived to describe the system dynamics. The definition of dark modes is given building on the input-output structure of the system. Then, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of dark modes. Also, the problem of dark mode synthesis via Hamiltonian engineering is constructively solved and an example is presented to illustrate our results.
We address the problem of constructing dynamically corrected gates for non-Markovian open quantum systems in settings where limitations on the available control inputs and/or the presence of control noise make existing analytical approaches unfeasible. By focusing on the important case of singlet-triplet electron spin qubits, we show how ideas from optimal control theory may be used to automate the synthesis of dynamically corrected gates that simultaneously minimize the system's sensitivity against both decoherence and control errors. Explicit sequences for effecting robust single-qubit rotat…
Repulsive and attractive interactions usually lead to very different physics. Striking exceptions exist in the dynamics of driven-dissipative quantum systems. For the example of a photonic Bose-Hubbard dimer, we establish a one-to-one mapping relating the cases of onsite repulsion and attraction. We prove that the mapping is valid for an entire class of Markovian open quantum systems with time-reversal invariant Hamiltonian and physically meaningful inverse-sign Hamiltonian. To underline the broad applicability of the mapping, we illustrate the one-to-one correspondence between the nonequilibr…
Recently, the dynamics simulation of light-harvesting complexes as an open quantum system, in the weak and strong coupling regimes, has received much attention. In this paper, we investigate a digital quantum simulation approach of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) photosynthetic pigment-protein complex surrounded with a Markovian bath, i.e., memoryless, based on a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computer. For this purpose, we apply the decoupling(recoupling) method, which is turn off(on) the couplings and also Solovay-Kitaev techniques to decompose Hamiltonian and Lindbladians into effi…

We study a novel class of open-loop control protocols constructed to perform arbitrary nontrivial single-qubit logic operations robust against time-dependent non-Markovian noise. Amplitude and phase modulation protocols are crafted leveraging insights from functional synthesis and the basis set of Walsh functions. We employ the experimentally validated generalized filter-transfer function formalism in order to find optimized control protocols for target operations in SU(2) by defining a cost function for the filter-transfer function to be minimized through the applied modulation. Our work deta…
We investigate a general class of dissipative quantum circuit capable of computing arbitrary Conjunctive Normal Form (CNF) Boolean formulas. In particular, the clauses in a CNF formula define a local generator of Markovian quantum dynamics which acts on a network of qubits. Fixed points of this dynamical system encode the evaluation of the CNF formula. The structure of the corresponding quantum map partitions the Hilbert space into sectors, according to decoherence-free subspaces (DFSs) associated with the dissipative dynamics. These sectors then provide a natural and consistent way to classif…
Spin systems are an attractive candidate for quantum-enhanced metrology. Here we develop a variational method to generate metrological states in small dipolar-interacting ensembles with limited qubit controls and unknown spin locations. The generated states enable sensing beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL) and approaching the Heisenberg limit (HL). Depending on the circuit depth and the level of readout noise, the resulting states resemble Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states or Spin Squeezed States (SSS). Sensing beyond the SQL holds in the presence of finite spin polarization and a …
