Spin systems are an attractive candidate for quantum-enhanced metrology. Here we develop a variational method to generate metrological states in small dipolar-interacting ensembles with limited qubit controls and unknown spin locations. The generated states enable sensing beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL) and approaching the Heisenberg limit (HL). Depending on the circuit depth and the level of readout noise, the resulting states resemble Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states or Spin Squeezed States (SSS). Sensing beyond the SQL holds in the presence of finite spin polarization and a non-Markovian noise environment.
Dynamics of zeroth order quantum coherences and preparation of the pseudopure states in homonuclear systems of dipolar coupling spins is closely examined. It has been shown an extreme important role of the non-diagonal part of zeroth order coherence in construction of the pseudopure state. Simulations of the preparation process of pseudopure states with the real molecular structures (a rectangular (-chloro- -nitrobenzene molecule), a chain (hydroxyapatite molecule), a ring (benzene molecule), and a double ring (cyclopentane molecule)) open the way to experimental testing of the obtained result…
A method of creating pseudopure spin states in large clusters of coupled spins is described. It is based on filtering multiple-quantum coherence of the highest order followed by a time-reversal period and partial saturation. Experimental demonstration is presented for a cluster of six dipolar-coupled proton spins of a benzene molecule in liquid crystalline matrix, and the details of spin dynamics are studied numerically.
Current metrological bounds typically assume full control over all particles that are involved in the protocol. Relaxing this assumption we study metrological performance when only limited control is available. As an example, we measure a static magnetic field when a fully controlled quantum sensor is supplemented by particles over which only global control is possible. We show that even for a noisy quantum sensor, a protocol that maps the magnetic field to a precession frequency can achieve transient super-Heisenberg scaling in measurement time and Heisenberg scaling in the particle number. T…
In a closed quantum system of N coupled spins with magnetic quantum number I, there are about (2I + 1)^N constants of motion. However, the possibility of observing such quasi-invariant (QI) states in solid-like spin systems in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is not a strictly exact prediction. The aim of this work is to provide experimental evidence of several QI, in the proton NMR of small spin clusters, besides those already known Zeeman, and dipolar orders (strong and weak). We explore the spin states prepared with the Jeener-Broekaert pulse sequence by analyzing the time-domain signals yi…

We study a bulk fermionic dipolar molecular gas in the quantum degenerate regime confined in a two-dimensional geometry. We consider two rotational states that encode a spin 1/2 degree of freedom. We derive a long-range interacting XXZ model describing the many-body spin dynamics of the molecules valid in the regime where motional degrees of freedom are frozen. Due to the spatially extended nature of the harmonic oscillator modes, the interactions in the spin model are very long-ranged and the system behaves close to the collective limit, resulting in robust dynamics and generation of entangle…

We identify the large-$N$ scaling of the metrological quantum gain offered by over-squeezed spin states that are accessible by one-axis-twisting, as a function of the preparation time. We further determine how the scaling is modified by relevant decoherence processes and predict a discontinuous change of the quantum gain at a critical preparation time that depends on the noise. Our analytical results provide recipes for optimal and feasible implementations of quantum enhancements with non-Gaussian spin states in existing experiments, well beyond the reach of spin squeezing.

We propose a simple and efficient method for generating metrologically useful quantum entanglement in an ensemble of spin-1 atoms that interacts with a high-finesse optical cavity mode. It requires straightforward preparation of $N$ atoms in the $m_F=0$ sublevel, tailoring of the atom-field interaction to give an effective Tavis-Cummings model for the collective spin-1 ensemble, and a photon counting measurement on the cavity output field. The photon number provides a projective measurement of the collective spin length $S$, which, for the chosen initial state, is heavily weighted around value…

Environmental noise can hinder the metrological capabilities of entangled states. While the use of entanglement allows for Heisenberg-limited resolution, the largest permitted by quantum mechanics, deviations from strictly unitary dynamics quickly restore the standard scaling dictated by the central limit theorem. Product and maximally entangled states become asymptotically equivalent when the noisy evolution is both local and strictly Markovian. However, temporal correlations in the noise have been shown to lift this equivalence while fully (spatially) correlated noise allows for the identifi…
Accurate and precise control of large quantum systems is paramount to achieve practical advantages on quantum devices. Therefore, benchmarking the hardware errors in quantum computers has drawn significant attention lately. Existing benchmarks for digital quantum computers involve averaging the global fidelity over a large set of quantum circuits and are therefore unsuitable for specific multi-qubit gates used in analog quantum operations. Moreover, average global fidelity is not the optimal figure-of-merit for some of the applications specific to multi-qubit gates and analog devices , such as…
Non-vanishing fluctuations of the vacuum state are a salient feature of quantum theory. These fluctuations fundamentally limit the precision of quantum sensors. Nowadays, several systems such as optical clocks, gravitational wave detectors, matter-wave interferometers, magnetometers, and optomechanical systems approach measurement sensitivities where the effect of quantum fluctuations sets a fundamental limit, the so-called standard quantum limit (SQL). It has been proposed that the SQL can be overcome by squeezing the vacuum fluctuations. Realizations of this scheme have been demonstrated in …
We investigate analytically and numerically the Multiple Quantum (MQ) NMR dynamics in dipolar ordered spin systems of nuclear spins 1/2 at a low temperatures. We suggest two different methods of MQ NMR. One of them is based on the measurement of the dipolar energy. The other method uses an additional resonance (π/4)_{y}-pulse after the preparation period of the standard MQ NMR experiment in solids and allows one to measure the Zeeman energy. The both considered methods are sensitive to the contribution of remote spins in the interaction and to the spin system structure. The QS method is sensit…

Quantum Information processing by NMR with small number of qubits is well established. Scaling to higher number of qubits is hindered by two major requirements (i) mutual coupling among qubits and (ii) qubit addressability. It has been demonstrated that mutual coupling can be increased by using residual dipolar couplings among spins by orienting the spin system in a liquid crystalline matrix. In such a case, the heteronuclear spins are weakly coupled but the homonuclear spins become strongly coupled. In such circumstances, the strongly coupled spins can no longer be treated as qubits. However,…
We use machine optimisation to develop a quantum sensing scheme that achieves significantly better sensitivity than traditional schemes with the same quantum resources. Utilising one-axis twisting dynamics to generate quantum entanglement, we find that rather than dividing the temporal resources into seperate "state-preparation" and "interrogation" stages, a complicated machine-designed sequence of rotations allows for the generation of metrologically useful entanglement while the parameter is interrogated. This provides much higher sensitivities for a given total time compared to states gener…
We propose a strategy to generate a many-body entangled state in a collection of randomly placed, dipolarly coupled electronic spins in the solid state. By using coherent control to restrict the evolution into a suitable collective subspace, this method enables the preparation of GHZ-like and spin-squeezed states even for randomly positioned spins, while in addition protecting the entangled states against decoherence. We consider the application of this squeezing method to improve the sensitivity of nanoscale magnetometer based on Nitrogen-Vacancy spin qubits in diamond.
We present an alternative protocol allowing for the preparation of critical states that instead of suffering from the critical slowing-down benefits from the critical speeding-up. Paradoxically, we prepare these states by going away from the critical point which allows for the speed-up. We apply the protocol to the paradigmatic quantum Rabi model and its classical oscillator limit as well as the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. Subsequently, we discuss the application of the adiabatic speed-up protocol in quantum metrology and compare its performance with critical quantum metrology. We show that cr…

The enormous theoretical potential of Quantum Information Processing (QIP) is driving the pursuit for its practical realization by various physical techniques. Currently Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) has been the forerunner by demonstrating a majority of quantum algorithms. In NMR, spin systems consisting of coupled nuclear spins are utilized as qubits. In order to carry out QIP, a spin system has to meet two major requirements: (i) qubit addressability and (ii) mutual coupling among the qubits. It has been demonstrated that the magnitude of the mutual coupling among qubits can be increased…
