In this paper, we analyze the structure of maximal sets of $k$-dimensional spaces in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ pairwise intersecting in at least a $(k-2)$-dimensional space, for $3 \leq k\leq n-2$. We give an overview of the largest examples of these sets with size more than $f(k,q)=\max\{3q^4+6q^3+5q^2+q+1,θ_{k+1}+q^4+2q^3+3q^2\}$.
We prove that given a finite collection of cylinders in $\R^3$ with the property that any two them intersect, then there is a line intersecting an $α$ fraction of the cylinders where $α=\frac 1{28}$. This is a special case of an interesting conjecture.
A $t$-intersecting constant dimension subspace code $C$ is a set of $k$-dimensional subspaces in a projective space PG(n,q), where distinct subspaces intersect in a $t$-dimensional subspace. A classical example of such a code is the sunflower, where all subspaces pass through the same $t$-space. The sunflower bound states that such a code is a sunflower if $|C| > \left( \frac {q^{k + 1} - q^{t + 1}}{q - 1} \right)^2 + \left( \frac {q^{k + 1} - q^{t + 1}}{q - 1} \right) + 1$. In this article we will look at the case $t=0$ and we will improve this bound for $q\geq 9$: a set $\mathcal{S}$ of $k$-…
We show that the maximum number of pairwise intersecting positive homothets of a $d$-dimensional centrally symmetric convex body, none of which contains the center of another in its interior, is at most $3^{d+1}$. Also, we improve upper bounds for cardinalities of $k$-distance sets in Minkowski spaces.
Given an irreducible fraction $\frac{c}{d} \in [0,1]$, a pair $(\mathcal{A},\mathcal{B})$ is called a $\frac{c}{d}$-cross-intersecting pair of $2^{[n]}$ if $\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{B}$ are two families of subsets of $[n]$ such that for every pair $A \in\mathcal{A}$ and $B\in\mathcal{B}$, $|A \cap B|= \frac{c}{d}|B|$. Mathew, Ray, and Srivastava [{\it\small Fractional cross intersecting families, Graphs and Comb., 2019}] proved that $|\mathcal{A}||\mathcal{B}|\le 2^n$ if $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{B})$ is a $\frac{c}{d}$-cross-intersecting pair of $2^{[n]}$ and characterized all the pairs $(\mathcal…
Paul Erdős and László Lovász established that any \emph{maximal intersecting family of $k-$sets} has at most $k^{k}$ blocks. They introduced the problem of finding the maximum possible number of blocks in such a family. They also showed that there exists a maximal intersecting family of $k-$sets with approximately $(e-1)k!$ blocks. Later Péter Frankl, Katsuhiro Ota and Norihide Tokushige used a remarkable construction to prove the existence of a maximal intersecting family of $k-$sets with at least $(\frac{k}{2})^{k-1}$ blocks. In this article we introduce the notion of a \emph{closed intersec…
We study the function $M(n,k)$ which denotes the number of maximal $k$-uniform intersecting families $F\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$. Improving a bound of Balogh at al. on $M(n,k)$, we determine the order of magnitude of $\log M(n,k)$ by proving that for any fixed $k$, $M(n,k) =n^{Θ(\binom{2k}{k})}$ holds. Our proof is based on Tuza's set pair approach. The main idea is to bound the size of the largest possible point set of a cross-intersecting system. We also introduce and investigate some related functions and parameters.
The Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem tells us how large an intersecting family of r-sets from an n-set can be, while results due to Lovasz and Tuza give bounds on the number of singletons that can occur as pairwise intersections of sets from such a family. We consider a natural generalization of these problems. Given an intersecting family of r-sets from an n-set and 1\leq k \leq r, how many k-sets can occur as pairwise intersections of sets from the family? For k=r and k=1 this reduces to the problems described above. We answer this question exactly for all values of k and r, when n is sufficiently larg…
A family $\mathcal{F}$ on ground set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ is maximal $k$-wise intersecting if every collection of at most $k$ sets in $\mathcal{F}$ has non-empty intersection, and no other set can be added to $\mathcal{F}$ while maintaining this property. In 1974, Erdős and Kleitman asked for the minimum size of a maximal $k$-wise intersecting family. We answer their question for $k=3$ and sufficiently large $n$. We show that the unique minimum family is obtained by partitioning the ground set $[n]$ into two sets $A$ and $B$ with almost equal sizes and taking the family consisting of all t…
A family $\mathcal{F}$ on ground set $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ is maximal $k$-wise intersecting if every collection of $k$ sets in $\mathcal{F}$ has non-empty intersection, and no other set can be added to $\mathcal{F}$ while maintaining this property. Erdős and Kleitman asked for the minimum size of a maximal $k$-wise intersecting family. Complementing earlier work of Hendrey, Lund, Tompkins and Tran, who answered this question for $k=3$ and large even $n$, we answer it for $k=3$ and large odd $n$. We show that the unique minimum family is obtained by partitioning the ground set into two sets $A$ a…
Erdős and Lovász noticed that an $r$-uniform intersecting hypergraph $H$ with maximal covering number, that is $τ(H)=r$, must have at least $\frac{8}{3}r-3$ edges. There has been no improvement on this lower bound for 45 years. We try to understand the reason by studying some small cases to see whether the truth lies very close to this simple bound. Let $q(r)$ denote the minimum number of edges in an intersecting $r$-uniform hypergraph. It was known that $q(3)=6$ and $q(4)=9$. We obtain the following new results: The extremal example for uniformity 4 is unique. Somewhat surprisingly it is not …
To study how balanced or unbalanced a maximal intersecting family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \binom{[n]}{r}$ is we consider the ratio $\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{F})=\frac{Δ(\mathcal{F})}{δ(\mathcal{F})}$ of its maximum and minimum degree. We determine the order of magnitude of the function $m(n,r)$, the minimum possible value of $\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{F})$, and establish some lower and upper bounds on the function $M(n,r)$, the maximum possible value of $\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{F})$. To obtain constructions that show the bounds on $m(n,r)$ we use a theorem of Blokhuis on the minimum size of a non-trivial bl…
A convex polygon $A$ is related to a convex $m$-gon $K= \bigcap_{i=1}^m k_i^+$, where $k_1^+,..., k_m^+$ are the $m$ halfplanes whose intersection is equal to $K$, if $A$ is the intersection of halfplanes $a_1^+,...,a_l$, each of which is a translate of one of the $k_i^+$-s. The planar family ${\cal A}$ is related to $K$ if each $A \in {\cal A}$ is related to $K$. We prove that any family of pairwise intersecting convex sets related to a given $n$-gon has a finite piercing number which depends on $n$. In the general case we show $O(3^{n^3})$, while for a certain class of families, we decrease …
Paul Erdős and László Lovász proved in a landmark article that, for any positive integer $k$, up to isomorphism there are only finitely many maximal intersecting families of $k-$sets (maximal $k-$cliques). So they posed the problem of determining or estimating the largest number $N(k)$ of the points in such a family. They also proved by means of an example that $N(k)\geq2k-2+\frac{1}{2}\binom{2k-2}{k-1}$. Much later, Zsolt Tuza proved that the bound is best possible up to a multiplicative constant by showing that asymptotically $N(k)$ is at most $4$ times this lower bound. In this paper we red…
We reach beyond the celebrated theorems of Erdős-Ko-Rado and Hilton-Milner, and, a recent theorem of Han-Kohayakawa, and determine all maximal intersecting triples systems. It turns out that for each $n\ge7$ there are exactly 15 pairwise non-isomorphic such systems (and 13 for $n=6$). We present our result in terms of a hierarchy of Turán numbers $\ex^{(s)}(n, M_2^{3})$, $s\ge1$, where $M_2^{3}$ is a pair of disjoint triples. Moreover, owing to our unified approach, we provide short proofs of the above mentioned results (for triple systems only). The triangle $C_3$ is defined as $C_3=\{\{x_1,y…
Three intersection theorems are proved. First, we determine the size of the largest set system, where the system of the pairwise unions is l-intersecting. Then we investigate set systems where the union of any s sets intersect the union of any t sets. The maximal size of such a set system is determined exactly if s+t<5, and asymptotically if s+t>4. Finally, we exactly determine the maximal size of a k-uniform set system that has the above described (s,t)-union-intersecting property, for large enough n.

A family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ is called $k$-wise intersecting if any $k$ members of $\mathcal{F}$ have non-empty intersection, and it is called maximal $k$-wise intersecting if no family strictly containing $\mathcal{F}$ satisfies this condition. We show that for each $k\geq 2$ there is a maximal $k$-wise intersecting family of size $O(2^{n/(k-1)})$. Up to a constant factor, this matches the best known lower bound, and answers an old question of Erdős and Kleitman, recently studied by Hendrey, Lund, Tompkins, and Tran.
Simonovits and Sós conjectured that the maximal size of a triangle-intersecting family of graphs on $n$ vertices is $2^{\binom{n}{2}-3}$. Their conjecture has recently been proved using spectral methods. We provide an elementary proof of the special case of $8$ vertices using a partition argument.
In this paper, we describe the structure of maximal non-trivial uniform $t$-intersecting families with large size for finite sets. In the special case when $t=1$, our result gives rise to Kostochka and Mubayi's result in 2017.
A pseudocircle is a simple closed curve on the sphere or in the plane. The study of arrangements of pseudocircles was initiated by Grünbaum, who defined them as collections of simple closed curves that pairwise intersect in exactly two crossings. Grünbaum conjectured that the number of triangular cells $p_3$ in digon-free arrangements of $n$ pairwise intersecting pseudocircles is at least $2n-4$. We present examples to disprove this conjecture. With a recursive construction based on an example with $12$ pseudocircles and $16$ triangles we obtain a family with $p_3(\mathcal{A})/n \to 16/11 = 1.…
Let $V$ be an $n$-dimensional vector space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this paper we describe the structure of maximal non-trivial $t$-intersecting families of $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$ with large size. We also determine the non-trivial $t$-intersecting families with maximum size. In the special case when $t=1$ our result gives rise to the well-known Hilton-Milner Theorem for vector spaces.
Let $G(X,Y)$ be a connected, non-complete bipartite graph with $|X|\leq |Y|$. An independent set $A$ of $G(X,Y)$ is said to be trivial if $A\subseteq X$ or $A\subseteq Y$. Otherwise, $A$ is nontrivial. By $α(X,Y)$ we denote the size of maximal-sized nontrivial independent sets of $G(X,Y)$. We prove that if the automorphism group of $G(X,Y)$ is transitive on $X$ and $Y$, then $α(X,Y)=|Y|-d(X)+1$, where $d(X)$ is the common degree of vertices in $X$. We also give the structures of maximal-sized nontrivial independent sets of $G(X,Y)$. As applications of this result, we give the upper bound of si…
A long standing conjecture of Richter and Thomassen states that the total number of intersection points between any $n$ simple closed Jordan curves in the plane, so that any pair of them intersect and no three curves pass through the same point, is at least $(1-o(1))n^2$. We confirm the above conjecture in several important cases, including the case (1) when all curves are convex, and (2) when the family of curves can be partitioned into two equal classes such that each curve from the first class is touching every curve from the second class. (Two curves are said to be touching if they have pr…
Let $S$ be an $n$-punctured sphere, with $n \geq 3$. We prove that $\binom{n}{3}$ is the maximum size of a family of pairwise non-homotopic simple arcs on $S$ joining a fixed pair of distinct punctures of $S$ and pairwise intersecting at most twice. On the way, we show that a square annular diagram $A$ has a corner on each of its boundary paths if $A$ contains at least one square and the dual curves of $A$ are simple arcs joining the boundary paths of $A$ and pairwise intersecting at most once.
For positive integers $n,r,k$ with $n\ge r$ and $k\ge2$, a set $\{(x_1,y_1),(x_2,y_2),\dots,(x_r,y_r)\}$ is called a $k$-signed $r$-set on $[n]$ if $x_1,\dots,x_r$ are distinct elements of $[n]$ and $y_1\dots,y_r\in[k]$. We say a $t$-intersecting family consisting of $k$-signed $r$-sets on $[n]$ is trivial if each member of this family contains a fixed $k$-signed $t$-set. In this paper, we determine the structure of large maximal non-trivial $t$-intersecting families. In particular, we characterize the non-trivial $t$-intersecting families with maximum size for $t\ge2$, extending a Hilton-Miln…
A family $\F$ of sets is said to be intersecting if any two sets in $\F$ have nonempty intersection. The celebrated Erd{\H o}s-Ko-Rado theorem determines the size and structure of the largest intersecting family of $k$-sets on an $n$-set $X$. An $(s,t)$-union intersecting family is a family of $k$-sets on an $n$-set $X$ such that for any $A_1,\ldots,A_{s+t}$ in this family, $\left(\cup_{i=1}^sA_i\right)\cap\left(\cup_{i=1}^t A_{i+s}\right)\neq \varnothing.$ Let $\ell(\F)$ be the minimum number of sets in $\F$ such that by removing them the resulting subfamily is intersecting. In this paper, fo…
Let $F_s$ be the friendship graph obtained from $s$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. For fixed $s\ge 2$ and sufficiently large $n$, the $F_s$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)],and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)]. Recently, the spectral extremal problems was widely studied for graphs containing no $H$ as a minor. For instance, Tait [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 166 (2019)], Zhai and Lin [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 157 (…
The classical Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem states that if $k\le\floor{n/2}$ then the largest family of pairwise intersecting $k$-subsets of $[n]=\{0,1,...,n\}$ is of size ${{n-1}\choose{k-1}}$. A family of $k$ subsets satisfying this pairwise intersecting property is called an EKR family. We generalize the EKR property and provide asymptotic lower bounds on the size of the largest family ${\cal A}$ of $k$-subsets of $[n]$ that satisfies the following property: For each $A,B,C\in{\cal A}$, each of the four sets $A\cap B\cap C;A\cap B\cap C^C; A\cap B^C\cap C; A^C\cap B\cap C$ are non-empty. This ge…
Let $S^r(n)$ be the $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with parts $A$ and $B$, where the edges consist of all $r$-tuples with $1$ vertex in $A$ and $r-1$ vertices in $B$, and the sizes of $A$ and $B$ are chosen to maximise the number of edges. Let $M_t^r$ be the $r$-graph with $t$ pairwise disjoint edges. Given an $r$-graph $F$ and a positive integer $p\geq |V(F)|$, we define the {\em extension} of $F$, denoted by $H_{p}^{F}$ as follows: Label the vertices of $F$ as $v_1,\dots,v_{|V(F)|}$. Add new vertices $v_{|V(F)|+1},\dots,v_{p}$. For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j, 1\le i<j \le p$ not contained in …
The study of intersecting structures is central to extremal combinatorics. A family of permutations $\mathcal{F} \subset S_n$ is \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two permutations in $\mathcal{F}$ agree on some $t$ indices, and is \emph{trivial} if all permutations in $\mathcal{F}$ agree on the same $t$ indices. A $k$-uniform hypergraph is \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two of its edges have $t$ vertices in common, and \emph{trivial} if all its edges share the same $t$ vertices. The fundamental problem is to determine how large an intersecting family can be. Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel proved that…
The matching number of a family of subsets of an $n$-element set is the maximum number of pairwise disjoint sets. The families with matching number $1$ are called intersecting. The famous Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem determines the size of the largest intersecting family of $k$-sets. Its generalization to the families with larger matching numbers, known under the name of the Erdős Matching Conjecture, is still open for a wide range of parameters. In this paper, we address the degree versions of both theorems. More precisely, we give degree and $t$-degree versions of the Erdős-Ko-Rado and the Hilto…
We say that a family of $k$-subsets of an $n$-element set is intersecting, if any two of its sets intersect. In this paper we study different extremal properties of intersecting families, as well as the structure of large intersecting families. We also give some results on $k$-uniform families without $s$ pairwise disjoint sets, related to the Erdős Matching Conjecture. We prove a conclusive version of Frankl's theorem on intersecting families with bounded maximal degree. This theorem, along with its generalizations to cross-intersecting families, implies many results on the topic, obtained by…
Let $G$ be the alternating group of degree $n$. Let $ω(G)$ be the maximal size of a subset $S$ of $G$ such that $\langle x,y \rangle = G$ whenever $x,y \in S$ and $x \neq y$ and let $σ(G)$ be the minimal size of a family of proper subgroups of $G$ whose union is $G$. We prove that, when $n$ varies in the family of composite numbers, $σ(G)/ω(G)$ tends to $1$ as $n \to \infty$. Moreover, we explicitly calculate $σ(A_n)$ for $n \geq 21$ congruent to $3$ modulo $18$.

The clique number of a random graph in the Erdos-Renyi model G(n,p) yields a random variable which is known to be asymptotically (as n tends to infinity) almost surely within one of an explicit logarithmic (on n) function r(n,p). We extend this fact by showing that random graphs have, asymptotically almost surely, arbitrarily many pairwise disjoint complete subgraphs with as many vertices as r(n,p). The result is motivated by and applied to the sequential motion planning problem on random right angled Artin groups. Indeed, we give an asymptotical description of all the higher topological compl…
An Erdős-Ko-Rado set in a block design is a set of pairwise intersecting blocks. In this article we study Erdős-Ko-Rado sets in 2-(v,k,1) designs, Steiner systems. The Steiner triple systems and other special classes are treated separately. For unitals we also determine an upper bound on the size of the second-largest maximal Erdos-Ko-Rado sets.
In 1965, Paul Erdős asked about the largest family $Y$ of $k$-sets in $\{ 1, \ldots, n \}$ such that $Y$ does not contain $s+1$ pairwise disjoint sets. This problem is commonly known as the Erdős Matching Conjecture. We investigate the $q$-analog of this question, that is we want to determine the size of a largest family $Y$ of $k$-spaces in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ such that $Y$ does not contain $s+1$ pairwise disjoint $k$-spaces. Here we call two subspaces disjoint if they intersect trivially. Our main result is, slightly simplified, that if $16 s \leq \min\{ q^{\frac{n-k}{4}},$ $q^{\frac{n-2k+1}{3}…
