A $t$-intersecting constant dimension subspace code $C$ is a set of $k$-dimensional subspaces in a projective space PG(n,q), where distinct subspaces intersect in a $t$-dimensional subspace. A classical example of such a code is the sunflower, where all subspaces pass through the same $t$-space. The sunflower bound states that such a code is a sunflower if $|C| > \left( \frac {q^{k + 1} - q^{t + 1}}{q - 1} \right)^2 + \left( \frac {q^{k + 1} - q^{t + 1}}{q - 1} \right) + 1$. In this article we will look at the case $t=0$ and we will improve this bound for $q\geq 9$: a set $\mathcal{S}$ of $k$-spaces in PG(n,q), $q\geq 9$, pairwise intersecting in a point is a sunflower if $|\mathcal{S}|> \left(\frac{2}{\sqrt[6]{q}}+\frac{4}{\sqrt[3]{q}}-\frac{5}{\sqrt{q}}\right)\left(\frac {q^{k + 1} - 1}{q - 1}\right)^2$.
Let $f(k,r,s)$ stand for the least number so that if $\cal F$ is an arbitrary $k$-uniform, $L$-intersecting set system, where $|L|=s$, and $\cal F$ has more than $f(k,r,s)$ elements, then $\cal F$ contains a sunflower with $r$ petals. We give an upper bound for $f(k,3,s)$. Let $g(k,r,\ell)$ be the least number so that any $k$-uniform, $\ell$-intersecting set system of more than $g(k,r,\ell)$ sets contains a sunflower with $r$ petals. We give also an upper bound for $g(k,r,\ell)$.
A sunflower is a collection of sets $\{U_1,\ldots, U_n\}$ such that the pairwise intersection $U_i\cap U_j$ is the same for all choices of distinct $i$ and $j$. We study sunflowers of convex open sets in $\mathbb R^d$, and provide a Helly-type theorem describing a certain "rigidity" that they possess. In particular we show that if $\{U_1,\ldots, U_{d+1}\}$ is a sunflower in $\mathbb R^d$, then any hyperplane that intersects all $U_i$ must also intersect $\bigcap_{i=1}^{d+1} U_i$. We use our results to describe a combinatorial code $\mathcal C_n$ for all $n\ge 2$ which is on the one hand minima…
We prove that given a finite collection of cylinders in $\R^3$ with the property that any two them intersect, then there is a line intersecting an $α$ fraction of the cylinders where $α=\frac 1{28}$. This is a special case of an interesting conjecture.
Equidistant codes over vector spaces are considered. For $k$-dimensional subspaces over a large vector space the largest code is always a sunflower. We present several simple constructions for such codes which might produce the largest non-sunflower codes. A novel construction, based on the Plücker embedding, for 1-intersecting codes of $k$-dimensional subspaces over $\F_q^n$, $n \geq \binom{k+1}{2}$, where the code size is $\frac{q^{k+1}-1}{q-1}$ is presented. Finally, we present a related construction which generates equidistant constant rank codes with matrices of size $n \times \binom{n}{2…
A sunflower with p petals consists of p sets whose pairwise intersections are identical. The goal of the sunflower problem is to find the smallest r=r(p,k) such that any family of r^k distinct k-element sets contains a sunflower with p petals. Building upon a breakthrough of Alweiss, Lovett, Wu and Zhang from 2019, Rao proved that r=O(p log(pk)) suffices; this bound was reproved by Tao in 2020. In this short note we record that r=O(p log k) suffices, by using a minor variant of the probabilistic part of these recent proofs.
In this paper, we analyze the structure of maximal sets of $k$-dimensional spaces in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ pairwise intersecting in at least a $(k-2)$-dimensional space, for $3 \leq k\leq n-2$. We give an overview of the largest examples of these sets with size more than $f(k,q)=\max\{3q^4+6q^3+5q^2+q+1,θ_{k+1}+q^4+2q^3+3q^2\}$.
A sunflower is a family of sets that have the same pairwise intersections. We simplify a recent result of Alweiss, Lovett, Wu and Zhang that gives an upper bound on the size of every family of sets of size $k$ that does not contain a sunflower. We show how to use the converse of Shannon's noiseless coding theorem to give a cleaner proof of their result.
We show that the maximum number of pairwise intersecting positive homothets of a $d$-dimensional centrally symmetric convex body, none of which contains the center of another in its interior, is at most $3^{d+1}$. Also, we improve upper bounds for cardinalities of $k$-distance sets in Minkowski spaces.
The Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem tells us how large an intersecting family of r-sets from an n-set can be, while results due to Lovasz and Tuza give bounds on the number of singletons that can occur as pairwise intersections of sets from such a family. We consider a natural generalization of these problems. Given an intersecting family of r-sets from an n-set and 1\leq k \leq r, how many k-sets can occur as pairwise intersections of sets from the family? For k=r and k=1 this reduces to the problems described above. We answer this question exactly for all values of k and r, when n is sufficiently larg…

A convex polygon $A$ is related to a convex $m$-gon $K= \bigcap_{i=1}^m k_i^+$, where $k_1^+,..., k_m^+$ are the $m$ halfplanes whose intersection is equal to $K$, if $A$ is the intersection of halfplanes $a_1^+,...,a_l$, each of which is a translate of one of the $k_i^+$-s. The planar family ${\cal A}$ is related to $K$ if each $A \in {\cal A}$ is related to $K$. We prove that any family of pairwise intersecting convex sets related to a given $n$-gon has a finite piercing number which depends on $n$. In the general case we show $O(3^{n^3})$, while for a certain class of families, we decrease …
In this paper we investigate Erdős-Ko-Rado theorems in ovoidal circle geometries. We prove that in Möbius planes of even order greater than 2, and ovoidal Laguerre planes of odd order, the largest families of circles which pairwise intersect in at least one point, consist of all circles through a fixed point. In ovoidal Laguerre planes of even order, a similar result holds, but there is one other type of largest family of pairwise intersecting circles. As a corollary, we prove that the largest families of polynomials over $\mathbb F_q$ of degree at most $k$, with $2 \leq k < q$, which pairwise…
A pseudocircle is a simple closed curve on the sphere or in the plane. The study of arrangements of pseudocircles was initiated by Grünbaum, who defined them as collections of simple closed curves that pairwise intersect in exactly two crossings. Grünbaum conjectured that the number of triangular cells $p_3$ in digon-free arrangements of $n$ pairwise intersecting pseudocircles is at least $2n-4$. We present examples to disprove this conjecture. With a recursive construction based on an example with $12$ pseudocircles and $16$ triangles we obtain a family with $p_3(\mathcal{A})/n \to 16/11 = 1.…
A long standing conjecture of Richter and Thomassen states that the total number of intersection points between any $n$ simple closed Jordan curves in the plane, so that any pair of them intersect and no three curves pass through the same point, is at least $(1-o(1))n^2$. We confirm the above conjecture in several important cases, including the case (1) when all curves are convex, and (2) when the family of curves can be partitioned into two equal classes such that each curve from the first class is touching every curve from the second class. (Two curves are said to be touching if they have pr…
We classify the pairwise transitive 2-designs, that is, 2-designs such that a group of automorphisms is transitive on the following five sets of ordered pairs: point-pairs, incident point-block pairs, non-incident point-block pairs, intersecting block-pairs and non-intersecting block-pairs. These 2-designs fall into two classes: the symmetric ones and the quasisymmetric ones. The symmetric examples include the symmetric designs from projective geometry, the 11-point biplane, the Higman-Sims design, and designs of points and quadratic forms on symplectic spaces. The quasisymmetric examples aris…
In this paper we adapt techniques used by Ahlswede and Khachatrian in their proof of the Complete Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem to show that if $n \geq 2t+1$, then any pairwise $t$-cycle-intersecting family of permutations has cardinality less than or equal to $(n-t)!$. Furthermore, the only families attaining this size are the stabilizers of $t$ points, that is, families consisting of all permutations having $t$ 1-cycles in common. This is a strengthening of a previous result of Ku and Renshaw and supports a recent conjecture by Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel concerning the corresponding bound for $t$-in…
Let $S$ be an $n$-punctured sphere, with $n \geq 3$. We prove that $\binom{n}{3}$ is the maximum size of a family of pairwise non-homotopic simple arcs on $S$ joining a fixed pair of distinct punctures of $S$ and pairwise intersecting at most twice. On the way, we show that a square annular diagram $A$ has a corner on each of its boundary paths if $A$ contains at least one square and the dual curves of $A$ are simple arcs joining the boundary paths of $A$ and pairwise intersecting at most once.
The classical Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem states that if $k\le\floor{n/2}$ then the largest family of pairwise intersecting $k$-subsets of $[n]=\{0,1,...,n\}$ is of size ${{n-1}\choose{k-1}}$. A family of $k$ subsets satisfying this pairwise intersecting property is called an EKR family. We generalize the EKR property and provide asymptotic lower bounds on the size of the largest family ${\cal A}$ of $k$-subsets of $[n]$ that satisfies the following property: For each $A,B,C\in{\cal A}$, each of the four sets $A\cap B\cap C;A\cap B\cap C^C; A\cap B^C\cap C; A^C\cap B\cap C$ are non-empty. This ge…
Let $S^r(n)$ be the $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with parts $A$ and $B$, where the edges consist of all $r$-tuples with $1$ vertex in $A$ and $r-1$ vertices in $B$, and the sizes of $A$ and $B$ are chosen to maximise the number of edges. Let $M_t^r$ be the $r$-graph with $t$ pairwise disjoint edges. Given an $r$-graph $F$ and a positive integer $p\geq |V(F)|$, we define the {\em extension} of $F$, denoted by $H_{p}^{F}$ as follows: Label the vertices of $F$ as $v_1,\dots,v_{|V(F)|}$. Add new vertices $v_{|V(F)|+1},\dots,v_{p}$. For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j, 1\le i<j \le p$ not contained in …
We improve on the lower bound of the maximum number of planes in $\operatorname{PG}(8,q)\cong\F_q^{9}$ pairwise intersecting in at most a point. In terms of constant dimension codes this leads to $A_q(9,4;3)\ge q^{12}+ 2q^8+2q^7+q^6+2q^5+2q^4-2q^2-2q+1$. This result is obtained via a more general construction strategy, which also yields other improvements.
We show that any set of distinct homotopy classes of simple closed curves on the torus that pairwise intersect at most $k$ times has size $k + O(\sqrt{k} \log k)$. Prior to this work, a lemma of Agol, together with the state of the art bounds for the size of prime gaps, implied the error term $O(k^{21/40})$, and in fact the assumption of the Riemann hypothesis improved this error term to the one we obtain $O(\sqrt{k} \log k)$. By contrast, our methods are elementary, combinatorial, and geometric.
Let $\F$ be a finite family of axis-parallel boxes in $\R^d$ such that $\F$ contains no $k+1$ pairwise disjoint boxes. We prove that if $\F$ contains a subfamily $\M$ of $k$ pairwise disjoint boxes with the property that for every $F\in \F$ and $M\in \M$ with $F \cap M \neq \emptyset$, either $F$ contains a corner of $M$ or $M$ contains $2^{d-1}$ corners of $F$, then $\F$ can be pierced by $O(k)$ points. One consequence of this result is that if $d=2$ and the ratio between any of the side lengths of any box is bounded by a constant, then $\F$ can be pierced by $O(k)$ points. We further show th…
Linear codes in the projective space $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$, the set of all subspaces of the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$, were first considered by Braun, Etzion and Vardy. The Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}_q(n,k)$ is the collection of all subspaces of dimension $k$ in $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$. We study equidistant linear codes in $\mathbb{P}_q(n)$ in this paper and establish that the normalized minimum distance of a linear code is maximum if and only if it is equidistant. We prove that the upper bound on the size of such class of linear codes is $2^n$ when $q=2$ as conjectured by Braun et al. Moreover, the c…
