This is a preliminary version of the text, which I decided to keep because other papers refer to the problems I posed in this version. By now, it was split into two papers: arXiv:1810.00915 and arXiv:1810.00920 . The presentation was improved and the results concerning the structure of intersecting families were generalized and strengthened
We say that a family of $k$-subsets of an $n$-element set is intersecting, if any two of its sets intersect. In this paper we study different extremal properties of intersecting families, as well as the structure of large intersecting families. We also give some results on $k$-uniform families without $s$ pairwise disjoint sets, related to the Erdős Matching Conjecture. We prove a conclusive version of Frankl's theorem on intersecting families with bounded maximal degree. This theorem, along with its generalizations to cross-intersecting families, implies many results on the topic, obtained by Frankl, Frankl and Tokushige, Kupavskii and Zakharov and others. We study the structure of large intersecting families, obtaining some general structural theorems which generalize the results of Han and Kohayakawa, as well as Kostochka and Mubayi. We give degree and subset degree version of the Erdős--Ko--Rado and the Hilton--Milner theorems, extending the results of Huang and Zhao, and Frankl, Han, Huang and Zhao. We also extend the range in which the degree version of the Erdős Matching conjecture holds.
A family of subsets of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ is called {\it intersecting} if any two of its sets intersect. A classical result in extremal combinatorics due to Erdős, Ko, and Rado determines the maximum size of an intersecting family of $k$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$. In this paper we study the following problem: how many intersecting families of $k$-subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$ are there? Improving a result of Balogh, Das, Delcourt, Liu, and Sharifzadeh, we determine this quantity asymptotically for $n\ge 2k+2+2\sqrt{k\log k}$ and $k\to \infty$. Moreover, under the same assumptions we also deter…
In this paper we present a simple unifying approach to prove several statements about intersecting and cross-intersecting families, including the Erd\H os--Ko--Rado theorem, the Hilton--Milner theorem, a theorem due to Frankl concerning the size of intersecting families with bounded maximal degree, and versions of results on the sum of sizes of non-empty cross-intersecting families due to Frankl and Tokushige. Several new stronger results are also obtained. Our approach is based on the use of regular bipartite graphs. These graphs are quite often used in Extremal Set Theory problems, however, …
We call a family of sets intersecting, if any two sets in the family intersect. In this paper we investigate intersecting families $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-element subsets of $[n]:=\{1,\ldots, n\},$ such that every element of $[n]$ lies in the same (or approximately the same) number of members of $\mathcal{F}$. In particular, we show that we can guarantee $|\mathcal{F}| = o({n-1\choose k-1})$ if and only if $k=o(n)$.
Let $n > k > 1$ be integers, $[n] = \{1, \ldots, n\}$. Let $\mathcal F$ be a family of $k$-subsets of~$[n]$. The family $\mathcal F$ is called intersecting if $F \cap F' \neq \emptyset$ for all $F, F' \in \mathcal F$. It is called almost intersecting if it is not intersecting but to every $F \in \mathcal F$ there is at most one $F'\in \mathcal F$ satisfying $F \cap F' = \emptyset$. Gerbner et al. proved that if $n \geq 2k + 2$ then $|\mathcal F| \leq {n - 1\choose k - 1}$ holds for almost intersecting families. The main result implies the considerably stronger and best possible bound $|\mathca…
We say that a family of $k$-subsets of an $n$-element set is intersecting if any two of its sets intersect. In this paper we study properties and structure of large intersecting families. We prove a conclusive version of Frankl's theorem on intersecting families with bounded maximal degree. This theorem, along with its generalizations to cross-intersecting families, strengthens the results obtained by Frankl, Frankl and Tokushige, Kupavskii and Zakharov and others. We study the structure of large intersecting families, obtaining some very general structural theorems which extend the results of…
Let $L = \{\frac{a_1}{b_1}, \ldots , \frac{a_s}{b_s}\}$, where for every $i \in [s]$, $\frac{a_i}{b_i} \in [0,1)$ is an irreducible fraction. Let $\mathcal{F} = \{A_1, \ldots , A_m\}$ be a family of subsets of $[n]$. We say $\mathcal{F}$ is a \emph{fractional $L$-intersecting family} if for every distinct $i,j \in [m]$, there exists an $\frac{a}{b} \in L$ such that $|A_i \cap A_j| \in \{ \frac{a}{b}|A_i|, \frac{a}{b} |A_j|\}$. In this paper, we introduce and study the notion of fractional $L$-intersecting families.
In this paper we study a question related to the classical Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, which states that any family of $k$-element subsets of the set $[n] = \{1,\ldots,n\}$ in which any two sets intersect, has cardinality at most ${n-1\choose k-1}$. We say that two non-empty families are $\mathcal A, \mathcal B\subset {[n]\choose k}$ are {\it $s$-cross-intersecting}, if for any $A\in\mathcal A,B\in \mathcal B$ we have $|A\cap B|\ge s$. In this paper we determine the maximum of $|\mathcal A|+|\mathcal B|$ for all $n$. This generalizes a result of Hilton and Milner, who determined the maximum of $|\m…
Let $\mathcal{A}=\{A_{1},...,A_{p}\}$ and $\mathcal{B}=\{B_{1},...,B_{q}\}$ be two families of subsets of $[n]$ such that for every $i\in [p]$ and $j\in [q]$, $|A_{i}\cap B_{j}|= \frac{c}{d}|B_{j}|$, where $\frac{c}{d}\in [0,1]$ is an irreducible fraction. We call such families "$\frac{c}{d}$-cross intersecting families". In this paper, we find a tight upper bound for the product $|\mathcal{A}||\mathcal{B}|$ and characterize the cases when this bound is achieved for $\frac{c}{d}=\frac{1}{2}$. Also, we find a tight upper bound on $|\mathcal{A}||\mathcal{B}|$ when $\mathcal{B}$ is $k$-uniform an…
In the first part of this paper, we prove a theorem which is the $q$-analogue of a generalized modular Ray-Chaudhuri-Wilson Theorem shown in [Alon, Babai, Suzuki, J. Combin. Theory Series A, 1991]. It is also a generalization of the main theorem in [Frankl and Graham, European J. Combin. 1985] under certain circumstances. In the second part of this paper, we prove $q$-analogues of results on a recent notion called \emph{fractional $L$-intersecting family} for families of subspaces of a given vector space. We use the above theorem to obtain a general upper bound to the cardinality of such famil…
A family $\mathcal F\subset 2^{[n]}$ is called intersecting if any two of its sets intersect. Given an intersecting family, its diversity is the number of sets not passing through the most popular element of the ground set. Peter Frankl made the following conjecture: for $n> 3k>0$ any intersecting family $\mathcal F\subset {[n]\choose k}$ has diversity at most ${n-3\choose k-2}$. This is tight for the following "two out of three" family: $\{F\in {[n]\choose k}: |F\cap [3]|\ge 2\}$. In this note, we prove this conjecture for $n\ge ck$, where $c$ is a constant independent of $n$ and $k$. In the …
Intersecting and cross-intersecting families usually appear in extremal combinatorics in the vein of the Erd{\H o}s--Ko--Rado theorem. On the other hand, P.~Erd{\H o}s and L.~Lov{á}sz in the noted paper~\cite{EL} posed problems on coloring intersecting families as a restriction of classical hypergraph coloring problems to a special class of hypergraphs. This note deals with the mentioned coloring problems stated for cross-intersecting families.
Using the Filmus-Golubev-Lifshitz method to bound the independence number of a hypergraph, we solve some problems concerning multiply intersecting families with biased measure. Among other results we obtain a stability result of a measure version of the Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem for multiply intersecting families.
For a family $\mathcal F$, let $\mathcal D(\mathcal F)$ stand for the family of all sets that can be expressed as $F\setminus G$, where $F,G\in \mathcal F$. A family $\mathcal F$ is intersecting if any two sets from the family have non-empty intersection. In this paper, we study the following question: what is the maximum of $|\mathcal D(\mathcal F)|$ for an intersecting family of $k$-element sets? Frankl conjectured that the maximum is attained when $\mathcal F$ is the family of all sets containing a fixed element. We show that this holds if $n \ge 50k\ln k$ and $k \ge 50$. At the same time, …
Guo and Xu determined the maximum size of intersecting families over finite affine spaces and showed that any family reaches maximum size must be trivial. In this paper, we characterize non-trivial intersecting family with maximum size.
In this paper, by shifting technique we study $t$-intersecting families for direct products where the ground set is divided into several parts. Assuming the size of each part is sufficiently large, we determine all extremal $t$-intersecting families for direct products. We also prove that every largest $t$-intersecting subfamily of a more general family introduced by Katona is trivial under certain conditions.
A family $\mathcal{F}$ is $t$-$\it{intersecting}$ if any two members have at least $t$ common elements. Erd\H os, Ko, and Rado proved that the maximum size of a $t$-intersecting family of subsets of size $k$ is equal to $ {{n-t} \choose {k-t}}$ if $n\geq n_0(k,t)$. Alon, Aydinian, and Huang considered families generalizing intersecting families, and proved the same bound. In this paper, we give a strengthening of their result by considering families generalizing $t$-intersecting families for all $t \geq 1$. In 2004, Talbot generalized Bollobás's Two Families Theorem to $t$-intersecting familie…
The matching number of a family of subsets of an $n$-element set is the maximum number of pairwise disjoint sets. The families with matching number $1$ are called intersecting. The famous Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem determines the size of the largest intersecting family of $k$-sets. Its generalization to the families with larger matching numbers, known under the name of the Erdős Matching Conjecture, is still open for a wide range of parameters. In this paper, we address the degree versions of both theorems. More precisely, we give degree and $t$-degree versions of the Erdős-Ko-Rado and the Hilto…
Let $r \geq 2$, $n$ and $k$ be integers satisfying $k \leq \frac{r-1}{r}n$. In the original arXiv version of this note we suggested a conjecture that the family of all $k$-subsets of an $n$-set cannot be partitioned into fewer than $\lceil n-\frac{r}{r-1}(k-1) \rceil$ $r$-wise intersecting families. We noted that if true this is tight for all values of the parameters, that the case $r=2$ is Kneser's conjecture, proved by Lovász, and observed that the assertion also holds provided $r$ is either a prime number or a power of $2$. We have recently learned, however, that the assertion of the conjec…
Let $n=2k+1$ be odd with $k\geq3$. In this note, we give two intersecting families with diversity larger than $\sum_{i=k+1}^{2k} \binom {2k}{i}$, which disprove a conjecture of Huang.
Bernáth and Gerbner in 2007 introduced $(p,q)$-chain intersecting families of subsets of an $n$-element underlying set. Those have the property that for any $p$-chain $A_1\subsetneq A_2\subsetneq \dots \subsetneq A_p$ and $q$-chain $B_1\subsetneq B_2\subsetneq \dots \subsetneq B_q$, we have $A_p\cap B_q\neq \emptyset$. Bernáth and Gerbner determined the largest cardinality of such families. They also introduced strongly $(p,q)$-chain intersecting families, where $A_p\cap B_1\neq \emptyset$ and totally $(p,q)$-chain intersecting families, where $A_1\cap B_1\neq \emptyset$. They obtained some pa…
Two families $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$ of $k$-subsets of an $n$-set are called cross-intersecting if $A\cap B\ne\emptyset$ for all $A\in \mathcal A, B\in \mathcal B $. Strengthening the classical Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem, Pyber proved that $|\mathcal A||\mathcal B|\le {n-1\choose k-1}^2$ holds for $n\ge 2k$. In the present paper we sharpen this inequality. We prove that assuming $|\mathcal B|\ge {n-1\choose k-1}+{n-i\choose k-i+1}$ for some $3\le i\le k+1$ the stronger inequality $$|\mathcal A||\mathcal B|\le \Bigl({n-1\choose k-1}+{n-i\choose k-i+1}\Bigr)\Bigl({n-1\choose k-1}-{n-i\choose…
Let $\mathcal{A}\subseteq{[n]\choose a}$ and $\mathcal{B}\subseteq{[n]\choose b}$ be two families of subsets of $[n]$, we say $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are cross-intersecting if $A\cap B\neq \emptyset$ for all $A\in\mathcal{A}$, $B\in\mathcal{B}$. In this paper, we study cross-intersecting families in the multi-part setting. By characterizing the independent sets of vertex-transitive graphs and their direct products, we determine the sizes and structures of maximum-sized multi-part cross-intersecting families. This generalizes the results of Hilton's and Frankl--Tohushige's on cross-inte…
In this paper we study two directions of extending the classical Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem which states that any family of $k$-element subsets of the set $[n] = \{1,\ldots,n\}$ in which any two sets intersect, has cardinality at most ${n-1\choose k-1}$. In the first part of the paper we study the families of $\{0,\pm 1\}$-vectors. Denote by $\mathcal L_k$ the family of all vectors $\mathbf v$ from $\{0,\pm 1\}^n$ such that $\langle\mathbf v,\mathbf v\rangle = k$. For any $k$, most $l$ and sufficiently large $n$ we determine the maximal size of the family $\mathcal V\subset \mathcal L_k$ such th…
Let $k\ge d\ge 3$ be fixed. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a $k$-uniform family on $[n]$. Then $\mathcal{F}$ is $(d,s)$-conditionally intersecting if it does not contain $d$ sets with union of size at most $s$ and empty intersection. Answering a question of Frankl, we present some structural results for families that are $(d,s)$-conditionally intersecting with $s\ge 2k+d-3$, and families that are $(k,2k)$-conditionally intersecting. As applications of our structural results, we present some new proofs to the upper bounds for the size of the following $k$-uniform families on $[n]$. (a) $(d,2k+d-3)$-condi…
We give simpler algebraic proofs of uniqueness for several Erdős-Ko-Rado results, i.e., that the canonically intersecting families are the only largest intersecting families. Using these techniques, we characterize the largest partially 2-intersecting families of perfect hypermatchings, resolving a recent conjecture of Meagher, Shirazi, and Stevens.
For an $n$-element set $X$ let $\binom{X}{k}$ be the collection of all its $k$-subsets. Two families of sets $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$ are called cross-intersecting if $A\cap B \neq \emptyset$ holds for all $A\in\mathcal A$, $B\in\mathcal B$. Let $f(n,k)$ denote the maximum of $\min\{|\mathcal A|, |\mathcal B|\}$ where the maximum is taken over all pairs of {\em disjoint}, cross-intersecting families $\mathcal A, \mathcal B\subset\binom{[n]}{k}$. Let $c=\log_2e$. We prove that $f(n,k)=\left\lfloor\frac12\binom{n-1}{k-1}\right\rfloor$ essentially iff $n>ck^2$ (cf. Theorem~1.4 for the exact …
In this paper, we describe the structure of maximal non-trivial uniform $t$-intersecting families with large size for finite sets. In the special case when $t=1$, our result gives rise to Kostochka and Mubayi's result in 2017.
A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is said to be \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two sets in $\mathcal{A}$ have at least $t$ common elements. A central problem in extremal set theory is to determine the size or structure of a largest $t$-intersecting sub-family of a given family $\mathcal{F}$. We give a survey of known results, conjectures and open problems for various important families $\mathcal{F}$, namely, power sets, levels of power sets, hereditary families, families of signed sets, families of labeled sets, and families of permutations. We also provide some extensions and consequences of kno…
Let $V$ be an $n$-dimensional vector space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. In this paper we describe the structure of maximal non-trivial $t$-intersecting families of $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$ with large size. We also determine the non-trivial $t$-intersecting families with maximum size. In the special case when $t=1$ our result gives rise to the well-known Hilton-Milner Theorem for vector spaces.
The celebrated Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem shows that for $n \ge 2k$ the largest intersecting $k$-uniform set family on $[n]$ has size $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$. It is natural to ask how far from intersecting larger set families must be. Katona, Katona and Katona introduced the notion of most probably intersecting families, which maximise the probability of random subfamilies being intersecting. We study the most probably intersecting problem for $k$-uniform set families. We provide a rough structural characterisation of the most probably intersecting families and, for families of particular sizes, show th…
A collection of sets is {\em intersecting} if every two members have nonempty intersection. We describe the structure of intersecting families of $r$-sets of an $n$-set whose size is quite a bit smaller than the maximum ${n-1 \choose r-1}$ given by the Erd\H os-Ko-Rado Theorem. In particular, this extends the Hilton-Milner theorem on nontrivial intersecting families and answers a recent question of Han and Kohayakawa for large $n$. In the case $r=3$ we describe the structure of all intersecting families with more than 10 edges. We also prove a stability result for the Erdos matching problem. O…
A set of sets is called a family. Two families $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ of sets are said to be cross-intersecting if each member of $\mathcal{A}$ intersects each member of $\mathcal{B}$. For any two integers $n$ and $k$ with $1 \leq k \leq n$, let ${[n] \choose \leq k}$ denote the family of subsets of $[n] = \{1, \dots, n\}$ that have at most $k$ elements. We show that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a non-empty subfamily of ${[n] \choose \leq r}$, $\mathcal{B}$ is a non-empty subfamily of ${[n] \choose \leq s}$, $r \leq s$, and $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are cross-intersecting, then \[|\mathc…
We say $\mathcal{F}$ is a \emph{r-wise fractional $L$-intersecting family} if for every distinct $i_1,i_2, \ldots,i_r \in [m]$, there exists an $\frac{a}{b} \in L$ such that $|A_{i_1} \cap A_{i_2} \cap \ldots \cap A_{i_r}| \in \{ \frac{a}{b}|A_{i_1}|, \frac{a}{b} |A_{i_2}|,\ldots, \frac{a}{b} |A_{i_r}| \}$. In this paper, we introduce and study the notion of r-wise fractional $L$-…
For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, let $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{F}) = \{F\setminus G: F, G \in \mathcal{F}\}$ be the collection of all (setwise) differences of $\mathcal{F}$. The family $\mathcal{F}$ is called a $t$-intersecting family, if for some positive integer $t$ and any two members $F, G \in \mathcal{F}$ we have $|F\cap G| \geq t$. The family $\mathcal{F}$ is simply called intersecting if $t=1$. Recently, Frankl proved an upper bound on the size of $\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{F})$ for the intersecting families $\mathcal{F}$. In this note we extend the result of Frankl t…
The profile vector of a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of an $n$-element set is $(f_0,f_1, \ldots, f_n)$ where $f_i$ denotes the number of the $i$-element members of $\mathcal{F}$. In this paper we determine the extreme points of the set of profile vectors for the class of non-trivial intersecting families.
Simonovits and Sós conjectured that the maximal size of a triangle-intersecting family of graphs on $n$ vertices is $2^{\binom{n}{2}-3}$. Their conjecture has recently been proved using spectral methods. We provide an elementary proof of the special case of $8$ vertices using a partition argument.
A clutter is \emph{$k$-wise intersecting} if every $k$ members have a common element, yet no element belongs to all members. We conjecture that, for some integer $k\geq 4$, every $k$-wise intersecting clutter is non-ideal. As evidence for our conjecture, we prove it for $k=4$ for the class of binary clutters. Two key ingredients for our proof are Jaeger's $8$-flow theorem for graphs, and Seymour's characterization of the binary matroids with the sums of circuits property. As further evidence for our conjecture, we also note that it follows from an unpublished conjecture of Seymour from 1975. W…
O. Einstein (2008) proved Bollobás-type theorems on intersecting families of ordered sets of finite sets and subspaces. Unfortunately, we report that the proof of a theorem on ordered sets of subspaces had a mistake. We prove two weaker variants.
We consider families of k-subsets of the standard n-set. Two families F, G are said to be cross-intersecting if every member of F has non-empty intersection with every member of G. A family is called non-trivial if the intersection of all its members is empty. Supposing that F and G are non-trivial and cross-intersecting, we determine the maximum of |F|+|G|. For the proof a strengthened version of the so-called shifting technique is introduced. The corresponding problem for families of different uniformities is solved as well.
A family of graphs F is said to be triangle-intersecting if for any two graphs G,H in F, the intersection of G and H contains a triangle. A conjecture of Simonovits and Sos from 1976 states that the largest triangle-intersecting families of graphs on a fixed set of n vertices are those obtained by fixing a specific triangle and taking all graphs containing it, resulting in a family of size (1/8) 2^{n choose 2}. We prove this conjecture and some generalizations (for example, we prove that the same is true of odd-cycle-intersecting families, and we obtain best possible bounds on the size of the …
It is well known that an intersecting family of subsets of an n-element set can contain at most 2^(n-1) sets. It is natural to wonder how `close' to intersecting a family of size greater than 2^(n-1) can be. Katona, Katona and Katona introduced the idea of a `most probably intersecting family.' Suppose that X is a family and that 0<p<1. Let X(p) be the (random) family formed by selecting each set in X independently with probability p. A family X is `most probably intersecting' if it maximises the probability that X(p) is intersecting over all families of size |X|. Katona, Katona and Katona con…
Given integers $r\geq 2$ and $n,t\geq 1$ we call families $\mathcal{F}_1,\dots,\mathcal{F}_r\subseteq\mathscr{P}([n])$ $r$-cross $t$-intersecting if for all $F_i\in\mathcal{F}_i$, $i\in[r]$, we have $\vert\bigcap_{i\in[r]}F_i\vert\geq t$. We obtain a strong generalisation of the classic Hilton-Milner theorem on cross intersecting families. In particular, we determine the maximum of $\sum_{j\in [r]}\vert\mathcal{F}_j\vert$ for $r$-cross $t$-intersecting families in the cases when these are $k$-uniform families or arbitrary subfamilies of $\mathscr{P}([n])$. Only some special cases of these resu…
Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel proved that for large enough $n$, a $t$-intersecting family of permutations contains at most $(n-t)!$ permutations. Their main theorem also states that equality holds only for $t$-cosets. We show that their proof of the characterization of extremal families is wrong. However, the characterization follows from a paper of Ellis, as mentioned already by Ellis, Friedgut and Pilpel.
Denote the collection of all $k$-flats in $AG(n,\mathbb{F}_q)$ by $\mathscr{M}(k,n)$. Let $\mathscr{F}_1\subset\mathscr{M}(k_1,n)$ and $\mathscr{F}_2\subset\mathscr{M}(k_2,n)$ satisfy $\dim(F_1\cap F_2)\ge t$ for any $F_1\in\mathscr{F}_1$ and $F_2\in\mathscr{F}_2$. We say they are cross $t$-intersecting families. Moreover, we say they are trivial if each member of them contains a fixed $t$-flats in $AG(n,\mathbb{F}_q)$. In this paper, we show that cross $t$-intersecting families with maximum product of sizes are trivial. We also describe the structure of non-trivial $t$-intersecting families w…
We say a family of sets is intersecting if any two of its sets intersect, and we say it is trivially intersecting if there is an element which appears in every set of the family. In this paper we study the maximum size of a non-trivially intersecting family in a natural "multi-part" setting. Here the ground set is divided into parts, and one considers families of sets whose intersection with each part is of a prescribed size. Our work is motivated by classical results in the single-part setting due to Erdős, Ko and Rado, and Hilton and Milner, and by a theorem of Frankl concerning intersecting…
We consider a problem of maximizing the product of the sizes of two uniform cross-$t$-intersecting families of sets. We show that the value of this maximum is at most polynomially larger (in the size of a ground set) than a quantity conjectured by Hirschorn in 2008. At the same time, we observe that it can be strictly bigger.
The extremal problems regarding the maximum possible size of intersecting families of various combinatorial objects have been extensively studied. In this paper, we investigate supersaturation extensions, which in this context ask for the minimum number of disjoint pairs that must appear in families larger than the extremal threshold. We study the minimum number of disjoint pairs in families of permutations and in $k$-uniform set families, and determine the structure of the optimal families. Our main tool is a removal lemma for disjoint pairs. We also determine the typical structure of $k$-uni…
Two sets $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{B}$ are said to be cross-intersecting if $X\cap Y\neq\emptyset$ for all $X\in\mathscr{A}$ and $Y\in\mathscr{B}$. Given two cross-intersecting Sperner families (or antichains) $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{B}$ of $\mathbb{N}_n$, we prove that $|\mathscr{A}|+|\mathscr{B}|\le 2{{n}\choose{\lceil{n/2}\rceil}}$ if $n$ is odd, and $|\mathscr{A}|+|\mathscr{B}|\le {{n}\choose{n/2}}+{{n}\choose{(n/2)+1}}$ if $n$ is even. Furthermore, all extremal and almost-extremal families for $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{B}$ are determined.
We construct an intersecting $k$-family of transversal size $\lceil \frac{k+1}{2} \rceil$ and length $k+1$ and study some of its properties. We use this family to prove that $q(4) = 9$. We also construct a $k$-family for $k = 2^m - 1$ of length $2k+1$ and transversal size at least $(2k+1)/3$.
A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is said to be intersecting if every two sets in $\mathcal{A}$ intersect. Two families $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are said to be cross-intersecting if each set in $\mathcal{A}$ intersects each set in $\mathcal{B}$. For a positive integer $n$, let $[n] = \{1, \dots, n\}$ and $\mathcal{S}_n = \{A \subseteq [n] \colon 1 \in A\}$. In this note, we extend the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem by showing that if $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are non-empty cross-intersecting families of subsets of $[n]$, $\mathcal{A}$ is intersecting, and $a_0, a_1, \dots, a_n, b_0, b_1, \dot…
Mubayi's Conjecture states that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a family of $k$-sized subsets of $[n] = \{1,\ldots,n\}$ which, for $k \geq d \geq 2$, satisfies $A_1 \cap\cdots\cap A_d \neq \emptyset$ whenever $|A_1 \cup\cdots\cup A_d| \leq 2k$ for all distinct sets $A_1,\ldots,A_d \in\mathcal{F}$, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq \binom{n-1}{k-1}$, with equality occurring only if $\mathcal{F}$ is the family of all $k$-sized subsets containing some fixed element. This paper proves that Mubayi's Conjecture is true for all families that are invariant with respect to shifting; indeed, these families satisfy a stronger…
