For $S_g(x,y)=x-g(y), x,y\in\mathbb{R}^n, g\in O(n),$ we investigate the Lebesgue measure and Hausdorff dimension of $S_g(A)$ given the dimension of $A$, both for general Borel subsets of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ and for product sets.
We give conditions on a general family $P_λ:\R^n\to\R^m, λ\in Λ,$ of orthogonal projections which guarantee that the Hausdorff dimension formula $\dim A\cap P_λ^{-1}\{u\}=s-m$ holds generically for measurable sets $A\subset\Rn$ with positive and finite $s$-dimensional Hausdorff measure, $s>m$, and with positive lower density. As an application we prove for measurable sets $A,B\subset\Rn$ with positive $s$- and $t$-dimensional measures, and with positive lower density that if $s + (n-1)t/n > n$, then $\dim A\cap (g(B)+z) = s+t - n$ for almost all rotations $g$ and for positively many $z\in\Rn$.
Using a recent result of Orponen (Invent. math. '21), we show that sets with plenty of big projections (PBP) admit an Analyst's Travelling Salesman Theorem. We then show that sets with PBP which are uniformly non-flat (or wiggly) have large Hausdorff dimension. We also obtain a corollary on analytic/Lipschitz harmonic capacities.
The macroscopic Hausdorff dimension Dim H (E) of a set E $\subset$ R d was introduced by Barlow and Taylor to quantify a "fractal at large scales" behavior of unbounded, possibly discrete, sets E. We develop a method based on potential theory in order to estimate this dimension in R d. Then, we apply this method to obtain Marstrand-like projection theorems: given a set E $\subset$ R 2 , for almost every $θ$ $\in$ [0, 2$π$], the projection of E on the straight line passing through 0 with angle $θ$ has dimension equal to min(Dim H (E) , 1).
We prove that for every at most countable family $\{f_k(x)\}$ of real functions on $[0,1)$ there is a single-valued real function $F(x)$, $x\in[0,1)$, such that the Hausdorff dimension of the graph $Γ$ of $F(x)$ equals 2, and for every $C\in\mathbb R$ and every $k$, the intersection of $Γ$ with the graph of the function $f_k(x)+C$ consists of at most one point. We also construct a family of functions of cardinality continuum and a function $F$ with similar properties.
This paper studies the Hausdorff dimension of the intersection of isotropic projections of subsets of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$, as well as dimension of intersections of sets with isotropic planes. It is shown that if $A$ and $B$ are Borel subsets of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ of dimension greater than m, then for a positive measure set of isotropic m-planes, the intersection of the images of $A$ and $B$ under orthogonal projections onto these planes have positive Hausdorff $m$-measure. In addition, if $A$ is a measurable set of Hausdorff dimension greater than $m$, then there is a set $B\subset\mathbb{R}^{2n}…
Let $F \subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$, and let $\dim_{\mathrm{A}}$ stand for Assouad dimension. I prove that $\dim_{\mathrm{A}} π_{e}(F) \geq \min\{\dim_{\mathrm{A}} F,1\}$ for all $e \in S^{1}$ outside of a set of Hausdorff dimension zero. This is a strong variant of Marstrand's projection theorem for Assouad dimension, whose analogue is not true for other common notions of fractal dimension, such as Hausdorff or packing dimension.
Marstrand's projection theorem from $1954$ states that if $K \subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$ is an analytic set, then, for $\mathcal{H}^{2}$ almost every $e \in S^{2}$, the orthogonal projection $π_{e}(K)$ of $K$ to the line spanned by $e$ has Hausdorff dimension $\min\{\dim_{\mathrm{H}} K,1\}$. This paper contains the following sharper version of Marstrand's theorem. Let $V \subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$ be any $2$-plane, which is not a subspace. Then, for $\mathcal{H}^{1}$ almost every $e \in S^{2} \cap V$, the projection $π_{e}(K)$ has Hausdorff dimension $\min\{\dim_{\mathrm{H}} K,1\}$. For $0 \leq t < \…
For $λ\in(0,1/3]$ let $C_λ$ be the middle-$(1-2λ)$ Cantor set in $\mathbb R$. Given $t\in[-1,1]$, excluding the trivial case we show that \[ Λ(t):=\left\{λ\in(0,1/3]: C_λ\cap(C_λ+t)\ne\emptyset\right\} \] is a topological Cantor set with zero Lebesgue measure and full Hausdorff dimension. In particular, we calculate the local dimension of $Λ(t)$, which reveals a dimensional variation principle. Furthermore, for any $β\in[0,1]$ we show that the level set \[ Λ_β(t):=\left\{λ\inΛ(t): \dim_H(C_λ\cap(C_λ+t))=\dim_P(C_λ\cap(C_λ+t))=β\frac{\log 2}{-\log λ}\right\} \] has equal Hausdorff and packing d…
In this work we reproduce the characterization of $\Gg^s$-sets from the euclidean setting [J. London Math. Soc. 49:267-280,1994] to more general metric spaces. These sets have Hausdorff dimension at least $s$ and are closed by countable intersections, which is particularly useful to estimate the dimension of the so called sets of $α$-approximable points (that typically appear in Diophantine approximations).
We study projectional properties of Poisson cut-out sets $E$ in non-Euclidean spaces. In the first Heisenbeg group, endowed with the Korányi metric, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the vertical projection $π(E)$ (projection along the center of the Heisenberg group) almost surely equals $\min\{2,dim_H(E)\}$ and that $π(E)$ has non-empty interior if $dim_H(E)>2$. As a corollary, this allows us to determine the Hausdorff dimension of $E$ with respect to the Euclidean metric in terms of its Heisenberg Hausdorff dimension $dim_H (E)$. We also study projections in the one-point compactificat…
For any $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 2$, denote $π^x: \mathbb{R}^d\backslash\{x\}\rightarrow S^{d-1}$ as the radial projection $$π^x(y)=\frac{y-x}{|y-x|}. $$ Given a Borel set $E\subset{\Bbb R}^d$, $\dim_{\mathcal{H}} E\leq d-1$, in this paper we investigate for how many $x\in \mathbb{R}^d$ the radial projection $π^x$ preserves the Hausdorff dimension of $E$, namely whether $\dim_{\mathcal{H}}π^x(E)=\dim_{\mathcal{H}} E$. We develop a general framework to link $π^x(E)$, $x\in F$ and $π^y(F)$, $y\in E$, for any Borel set $F\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular, whether $\dim_{\mathcal{H}}π^x(E)=\di…
In this paper we prove the following results in the plane. They are related to each other, while each of them has its own interest. First we obtain an $ε_0$-increment on intersection between pencils of $δ$-tubes, under non-concentration conditions. In fact we show it is equivalent to the discretized sum-product problem, thus the $ε_0$ follows from Bourgain's celebrated result. Then we prove a couple of new results on radial projections. We also discussion about the dependence of $ε_0$ and make a new conjecture. A tube condition on Frostman measures, after careful refinement, is also given.
We give a new Hausdorff content bound for limsup sets, which is related to Falconer's sets of large intersection. Falconer's sets of large intersection satisfy a content bound for all balls in a space. In comparison, our main theorem only assumes a scale-invariant bound for the balls forming the limit superior set in question. We give four applications of these ideas and our main theorem: a new proof and generalization of the mass transference principle related to Diophantine approximations, a related result on random limsup sets, a new proof of Federer's characterization of sets of finite per…
Intermediate dimensions were recently introduced to interpolate between the Hausdorff and box-counting dimensions of fractals. Firstly, we show that these intermediate dimensions may be defined in terms of capacities with respect to certain kernels. Then, relying on this, we show that the intermediate dimensions of the projection of a set $E \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ onto almost all $m$-dimensional subspaces depend only on $m$ and $E$, that is, they are almost surely independent of the choice of subspace. Our approach is based on `intermediate dimension profiles' that are expressed in terms of cap…
