Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and let $G$ be a finitely generated subgroup of the multiplicative group of $K$. We consider $K$-valued sequences of the form $a_n:=f(φ^n(x_0))$, where $φ\colon X\to X$ and $f\colon X\to\mathbb{P}^1$ are rational maps defined over $K$ and $x_0\in X$ is a point whose forward orbit avoids the indeterminacy loci of $φ$ and $f$. Many classical sequences from number theory and algebraic combinatorics fall under this dynamical framework, and we show that the set of $n$ for which $a_n\in G$ is a finite union of arithmetic progressions along with a set of Banach density zero. In addition, we show that if $a_n\in G$ for every $n$ and $X$ is irreducible and the $φ$ orbit of $x$ is Zariski dense in $X$ then there are a multiplicative torus $\mathbb{G}_m^d$ and maps $Ψ:\mathbb{G}_m^d \to \mathbb{G}_m^d$ and $g:\mathbb{G}_m^d \to \mathbb{G}_m$ such that $a_n = g\circ Ψ^n(y)$ for some $y\in \mathbb{G}_m^d$. We then obtain results about the coefficients of $D$-finite power series using these facts.
In this paper, we present a $q$-analogue of the polynomial reduction which was originally developed for hypergeometric terms. Using the $q$-Gosper representation, we describe the structure of rational functions that are summable when multiplied with a given $q$-hypergeometric term. The structure theorem enables us to generalize the $q$-polynomial reduction to the rational case, which can be used in the automatic proof and discovery of $q$-identities. As applications, several $q$-analogues of series for $π$ are presented.
In the present article, modeling certain rational numbers, that are represented in terms of Cantor series, are described. The statements on relations between digits in the representations of rational numbers by Cantor series (for the case of an arbitrary sequence $(q_k)$) are proved.
Using a modular equation of level $3$ and degree $23$ due to Chan and Liaw, we prove the fastest convergent rational Ramanujan-type series for $1/π$ of level $3$.
In this paper, we find rational zeta series with $ζ(2n)$ in terms of $ζ(2k+1)$ and $β(2k)$, the Dirichlet beta function. We then develop a certain family of generalized rational zeta series using the generalized Clausen function and use those results to discover a second family of generalized rational zeta series. As a special case of our results from Theorem 3.1, we prove a conjecture given in 2012 by F.M.S. Lima. Later, we use the same analysis but for the digamma function $ψ(x)$ and negapolygammas $ψ^{(-m)}(x)$. With these, we extract the same two families of generalized rational zeta serie…
We show that if $F(s)$ is a nondegenerate ordinary Dirichlet series with nonnegative coefficients and $F(k)$ is a rational number for all large enough positive integers $k$, then the denominators of those rational numbers are unbounded. In particular, our result holds for the Riemann zeta function over any arithmetic progression. These results are derived via upper bounds on associated Hankel determinants.
In this work, two new series expansions for generalized Euler's constants (Stieltjes constants) $γ_m$ are obtained. The first expansion involves Stirling numbers of the first kind, contains polynomials in $π^{-2}$ with rational coefficients and converges slightly better than Euler's series $\sum n^{-2}$. The second expansion is a semi-convergent series with rational coefficients only. This expansion is particularly simple and involves Bernoulli numbers with a non-linear combination of generalized harmonic numbers. It also permits to derive an interesting estimation for generalized Euler's cons…
In the work we have considered p-adic functional series with binomial coefficients and discussed its p-adic convergence. Then we have derived a recurrence relation following with a summation formula which is invariant for rational argument. More precisely, we have investigated a sufficient condition under which the p-adic power series converges to a rational invariant sum 0. Finally we have shown application of the invariant summation formula to get some intersting relations involving Bernoulli numbers and Bernoulli polynomials.
The field of formal Laurent series is a natural analogue of the real numbers, and mathematicians have been translating well-known results about rational approximations to that setting. In the framework of power series over the rational numbers, we define and study the Lagrange spectrum, related to Diophantine approximation of irrationals, and the Markov spectrum, related to representation by indefinite binary quadratic forms. We compute both spectra explicitly, and show that they coincide and exhibit no gaps, contrary to what happens over the reals.
In this paper we have discussed convergence of power series both in p-adic norm as well as real norm. We have investigated rational summability of power series with respect to both p-adic norm and real norm under certain conditions. Then we have studied convergence of specially constructed power series and derived summation formula. Finally, we have studied the adele, idele and some results regarding it with the help of convergent power series.
The present article is devoted to representations of rational numbers in terms sign-variable Cantor expansions. The main attention is given to one of the discussions given by J. Galambos in [4].
Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series are Dirichlet series in $r$ complex variables, with analytic continuation to $\mathbb{C}^r$ and a group of functional equations isomorphic to the Weyl group of a reduced root system of rank $r$. Such series may be defined for any global field $K$, but in the case when $K$ is an algebraic function field they are expected to be, up to a variable change, rational functions in several variables. We verify the rationality of these functions in the case when $K=\mathbb{F}_q(T)$, and describe the denominators and support of the numerators.
In this paper, two new series for the logarithm of the $Γ$-function are presented and studied. Their polygamma analogs are also obtained and discussed. These series involve the Stirling numbers of the first kind and have the property to contain only rational coefficients for certain arguments related to $π^{-1}$. In particular, for any value of the form $\lnΓ(\frac{1}{2}n\pmαπ^{-1})$ and $Ψ_k(\frac{1}{2}n\pmαπ^{-1})$, where $Ψ_k$ stands for the $k$th polygamma function, $α$ is positive rational greater than $\frac{1}{6}π$, $n$ is integer and $k$ is non-negative integer, these series have ratio…
The present paper studies Hecke rings derived by the automorphism groups of certain algebras $L_p$ over the ring of $p$-adic integers. Our previous work considered the case where $L_p$ is the Heisenberg Lie algebra (of dimension 3) over the ring of $p$-adic integers. Although this Hecke ring is noncommutative, we showed that a formal power series with coefficients in this Hecke ring satisfies an identity similar to the rationality of the Hecke series for $GL_2$ due to E.~Hecke. In the present paper, we establish an analogous result in the case of the Heisenberg Lie algebra of dimension 5 over …
For a given elliptic curve, its associated $L$-function evaluated at $1$ is closely related to its real period. In this article, we generalize this principle to a rational curve. We count the rational points over all finite fields and use all the counting information to define two $L$-type series. Then we consider special values of these series at $1$. One of the $L$-type series matches the Dirichlet $L$-series of modulo $4$, so the evaluation at $1$ is $π/4$; the special evaluation at $1$ of the other $L$-type series is equal to a real period associated to the rational curve. This identity co…
Motivated by a result of van der Poorten and Shparlinski for univariate power series, Bell and Chen prove that if a multivariate power series over a field of characteristic 0 is D-finite and its coefficients belong to a finite set then it is a rational function. We extend and strengthen their results to certain power series whose coefficients may form an infinite set. We also prove that if the coefficients of a univariate D-finite power series `look like' the coefficients of a rational function then the power series is rational. Our work relies on the theory of Weil heights, the Manin-Mumford …
In this paper, we investigate the existence of a point in the plane of a unit polygon, that is at rational distance from each vertex of the polygon. A negative answer is obtained in almost all cases.
The article is devoted to the investigation of representation of rational numbers by Cantor series. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a rational number to be representable by a positive Cantor series are formulated for the case of an arbitrary sequence $(q_k)$ and some its corollaries are considered. Results of this article were presented by the author of this article on the International Conference on Algebra dedicated to 100th anniversary of S. M. Chernikov (www.researchgate.net/publication/311415815, www.researchgate.net/publication/301849984). This investigation was also presented in…
In this paper, we propose various sufficient conditions to determine if a given real number is an irrational number or a transcendental number and also apply these conditions to some interesting examples, particularly, one of them comes from complex analytic dynamics
By telescoping method, Sun gave some hypergeometric series whose sums are related to $π$ recently. We investigate these series from the point of view of Gosper's algorithm. Given a hypergeometric term $t_k$, we consider the Gosper summability of $r(k)t_k$ for $r(k)$ being a rational function of $k$. We give an upper bound and a lower bound on the degree of the numerator of $r(k)$ such that $r(k)t_k$ is Gosper summable. We also show that the denominator of the $r(k)$ can read from the Gosper representation of $t_{k+1}/t_k$. Based on these results, we give a systematic method to construct series…
Friedberg, Hoffstein and Lieman have constructed two related multiple Dirichlet series from quadratic and higher-order $L$-functions and Gauss sums. We compute these multiple Dirichlet series explicitly in the case of the rational function field. This is done by utilizing the functional equation of the $L$-functions and the functional equation relating the two multiple Dirichlet series. We also point out a very simple correspondence between these series and their $p$-parts.
Here we introduce a way to construct generalized trigonometric functions associated with any complex polynomials, and the well known trigonometric functions can be seen to associate with polynomial $x^2-1$. We will show that those generalized trigonometric functions have algebraic identities which generalizes the well known $\sin^2(x)+\cos^2(x)=1$. One application of the generalized trigonometric functions is evaluating infinite series of rational functions.
The set of primes where a hypergeomeric series with rational parameters is $p$-adically bounded is known by [10] to have a Dirichlet density. We establish a formula for this Dirichlet density and conjecture that it is rare for the density to be large. We prove this conjecture for hypergeometric series whose parameters have denominators equal to a prime of the form $p = 2q^r + 1$, where $q$ is an odd prime, by establishing an upper bound on the density of bounded primes in this case. The general case remains open. This paper is the output of an undergraduate research course taught by the first …
The idea of the metaplectic theta function was introduced by Tomio Kubota in the 1960s. These theta functions are constructed as residues of Eisenstein series and are only known completely in the case of double covers and, up to the ambiguity of a constant, for triple covers. In 1992 Jeff Hoffstein published formulae by which these can be computed in certain cases over a rational function field. The author gave an alternative approach in 2007. Both of these methods give the coefficients in a closed form. The rational function field is unusual in that it has a large automorphism group. In this …
In this paper we give a general upper bound for the irrationality exponent of algebraic Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field. Our proof is based on a method introduced in a different framework by Adamczewski and Cassaigne. It makes use of automata theory and, in our context, of a classical theorem due to Christol. We then introduce a new approach which allows us to strongly improve this general bound in many cases. As an illustration, we give few examples of algebraic Laurent series for which we are able to compute the exact value of the irrationality exponent.
A sequence of rational points on an algebraic planar curve is said to form an $r$-geometric progression sequence if either the abscissae or the ordinates of these points form a geometric progression sequence with ratio $r$. In this work, we prove the existence of infinitely many rational numbers $r$ such that for each $r$ there exist infinitely many $r$-geometric progression sequences on the unit circle $x^2 + y^2 = 1$ of length at least $3$.
In math.CA/0211148 we observed that $\ln(4/ π)$ is an "alternating" analog of Euler's constant $γ$. Here we use the binary expansion of an integer to give a rational series for $\ln(4/ π)$ analogous to Vacca's series for $γ$. Also, using a known generalization of Vacca's series to other bases, we accelerate Addison's series for $γ$. Along the way, we give new proofs of Vacca's and Addison's formulas.
We relate a previous result of ours on families of Diophantine equations having only trivial solutions with a result on the approximation of an algebraic number by products of rational numbers and units. We compare this approximation with a Liouville type estimate, and with an estimate arising from a lower bound for a linear combination of logarithms.
We prove a quantitative version of a result of Furstenberg and Deligne stating that the the diagonal of a multivariate algebraic power series with coefficients in a field of positive characteristic is algebraic. As a consequence, we obtain that for every prime $p$ the reduction modulo $p$ of the diagonal of a multivariate algebraic power series $f$ with integer coefficients is an algebraic power series of degree at most $p^{A}$ and height at most $A^2p^{A+1}$, where $A$ is an effective constant that only depends on the number of variables, the degree of $f$ and the height of $f$. This answers …
The classical continued fraction is generalized for studying the rational approximation problem on multi-formal Laurent series in this paper, the construction is called m-continued fraction. It is proved that the approximants of an m-continued fraction converge to a multi-formal Laurent series, and are best rational approximations to it; conversely for any multi-formal Laurent series an algorithm called m-CF transform is introduced to obtain its m-continued fraction expansions; moreover, strict m-continued fractions, which are m-continued fractions imposed with some additional conditions, and …
In this note, using an idea from \cite{Amo-Carrillo-Sanchez} we derive some new series representations involving $ζ(2n)$ and Euler numbers. Using a well-known series representation for the Clausen function, we also provide some new representations of Apery's constant $ζ(3)$. In particular cases, we recover some well-known series representations of $π$.
Let $D,Q$ be natural numbers, $(D,Q)=1$, such that $D/Q>1$ and $D/Q$ is not a square. Let $q$ be the smallest divisor of $Q$ such that $Q|\, q^2$. We show that the units $>1$ of the ring $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{Dq^2/Q}]$ are connected with certain convergents of $\sqrt{D/Q}$. Among these units, the units of $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{DQ}]$ play a special role, inasmuch as they correspond to the convergents of $\sqrt{D/Q}$ that occur just before the end of each period. We also show that the last-mentioned units allow reading the (periodic) continued fraction expansion of certain quadratic irrationals from the (…
In this paper we characterise univariate rational functions over a number field $\K$ having infinitely many points in the cyclotomic closure $\K^c$ for which the orbit contains a root of unity. Our results are similar to previous results of Dvornicich and Zannier describing all polynomials having infinitely many preperiodic points in $\K^c$.
We investigate how non-zero rational multiplication and rational addition affect normality with respect to $Q$-Cantor series expansions. In particular, we show that there exists a $Q$ such that the set of real numbers which are $Q$-normal but not $Q$-distribution normal, and which still have this property when multiplied and added by rational numbers has full Hausdorff dimension. Moreover, we give such a number that is explicit in the sense that it is computable.
We evaluate in closed form series of the type $\sum u(n) R(n)$, where $(u(n))_n$ is a strongly $B$-multiplicative sequence and $R(n)$ a (well-chosen) rational function. A typical example is: $$ \sum_{n \geq 1} (-1)^{s_2(n)} \frac{4n+1}{2n(2n+1)(2n+2)} = -\frac{1}{4} $$ where $s_2(n)$ is the sum of the binary digits of the integer $n$. Furthermore closed formulas for series involving automatic sequences that are not strongly $B$-multiplicative, such as the regular paperfolding and Golay-Shapiro-Rudin sequences, are obtained; for example, for integer $d \geq 0$: $$ \sum_{n \geq 0} \frac{v(n)}{(n…
In the present paper and as an application of Roth's theorem concerning the rational approximation of algebraic numbers, we give a sufficient condition that will assure us that a series of positive rational terms is a transcendental number. With the same conditions, we establish a transcendental measure of $ \sum_{n = 1}^{\infty} 1/a_n$.
In this paper we examine the diophantine equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ where $k$ is a positive integer $\geq 2$, and consider its applications. While the complete solution of the equation $x^k-y^k=x-y$ in positive rational numbers is already known when $k=2$ or $3$, till now only one numerical solution of the equation in positive rational numbers has been published when $k=4$, and no nontrivial solution is known when $k \geq 5$. We describe a method of generating infinitely many positive rational solutions of the equation when $k=4$. We use the positive rational solutions of the equation with $k=2,\,…
Let $F$ be a finite extension of $Q_p$, $p>2$. We construct admissible unitary completions of certain representations of $GL_2(F)$ on $L$-vector spaces, where $L$ is a finite extension of $F$. When $F=Q_p$ using the results of Berger, Breuil and Colmez we obtain some results about lifting 2-dimensional mod $p$ representations of the absolute Galois group of $Q_p$ to crystabelline representations with given Hodge-Tate weights.
In this note we study an analogy between a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over finite fields and a positive definite quadratic form for elliptic curves over the rational number field. A question is posed of which an affirmative answer would imply the analogue of the Riemann hypothesis for elliptic curves over the rational number field.
Properties of the shuffle product suggest the definition of a quadratic form with domain and values in formal power series over a field of characteristic 2. This quadratic form preserves rational (respectively algebraic) power series and its restriction to the affine subspace of series with constant term 1 is bijective. Conjecturally, this bijection restricts to a bijection of rational (respectively algebraic) formal power series.
It is well known that rational multiplication preserves normality in base $b$. We study related normality preserving operations for the $Q$-Cantor series expansions. In particular, we show that while integer multiplication preserves $Q$-distribution normality, it fails to preserve $Q$-normality in a particularly strong manner. We also show that $Q$-distribution normality is not preserved by non-integer rational multiplication on a set of zero measure and full Hausdorff dimension.
