We introduce new techniques for working with presentations for a large class of (strict) tensor categories. We then apply the general theory to obtain presentations for partition, Brauer and Temperley-Lieb categories, as well as several categories of (partial) braids, vines and mappings.
Wreath products involving symmetric inverse monoids/semigroups/categories arise in many areas of algebra and science, and presentations by generators and relations are crucial tools in such studies. The current paper finds such presentations for $M\wr\mathcal I_n$, $M\wr\operatorname{Sing}(\mathcal I_n)$ and $M\wr\mathcal I$. Here $M$ is an arbitrary monoid, $\mathcal I_n$ is the symmetric inverse monoid, $\operatorname{Sing}(\mathcal I_n)$ its singular ideal, and $\mathcal I$ is the symmetric inverse category.
Presentations of categories are a well-known algebraic tool to provide descriptions of categories by means of generators, for objects and morphisms, and relations on morphisms. We generalize here this notion, in order to consider situations where the objects are considered modulo an equivalence relation, which is described by equational generators. When those form a convergent (abstract) rewriting system on objects, there are three very natural constructions that can be used to define the category which is described by the presentation: one consists in turning equational generators into identi…
We define a notion on preadditive categories which plays a role similar to the notion of a Grothendieck pretopology on an unenriched category. Each such additive pretopology defines an additive Grothendieck topology and suffices to define the sheaf category. This new notion allows us to study the noetherian and subcanonical nature of topologies, to describe easily the meet of a family of topologies and to identify useful universal properties of the sheaf category. As our main application we derive in which ways one can present a tensor category and show that such presentations lead to remarkab…
We describe the planar rook category, the rook category, the rook-Brauer category, and the Motzkin category in terms of generators and relations. We show that the morphism spaces of these categories have linear bases given by planar rook diagrams, rook diagrams, rook-Brauer diagrams, and Motzkin diagrams.
We prove existence results for small presentations of model categories generalizing a theorem of D. Dugger from combinatorial model categories to more general model categories. Some of these results are shown under the assumption of Vopěnka's principle. Our main theorem applies in particular to cofibrantly generated model categories where the domains of the generating cofibrations satisfy a slightly stronger smallness condition. As a consequence, assuming Vopěnka's principle, such a cofibrantly generated model category is Quillen equivalent to a combinatorial model category. Moreover, if there…
We propose a notion of weak (n+k,n)-category, which we call (n+k,n)-Theta-spaces. The (n+k,n)-Theta-spaces are precisely the fibrant objects of a certain model category structure on the category of presheaves of simplicial sets on Joyal's category Theta_n. This notion is a generalization of that of complete Segal spaces (which are precisely the (infty,1)-Theta-spaces). Our main result is that the above model category is cartesian.
Bisets can be considered as categories. This note uses this point of view to give a simple proof of a Mackey-like formula expressing the tensor product of two induced bimodules.
We show that $\mathit{ann}$-categories admit a presentation by crossed bimodules, and prove that morphisms between them can be expressed by special kinds spans between the presentations. More precisely, we prove the groupoid of morphisms between two $\mathit{ann}$-categories is equivalent to that of bimodule butterflies between the presentations. A bimodule butterfly is a specialization of a butterfly, i.e. a special kind of span or fraction, between the underlying complexes
We study convergent (terminating and confluent) presentations of n-categories. Using the notion of polygraph (or computad), we introduce the homotopical property of finite derivation type for n-categories, generalizing the one introduced by Squier for word rewriting systems. We characterize this property by using the notion of critical branching. In particular, we define sufficient conditions for an n-category to have finite derivation type. Through examples, we present several techniques based on derivations of 2-categories to study convergent presentations by 3-polygraphs.
We prove existence results a la Jeff Smith for left-induced model category structures, of which the injective model structure on a diagram category is an important example. We further develop the notions of fibrant generation and Postnikov presentation from Hess, which are dual to a weak form of cofibrant generation and cellular presentation. As examples, for k a field and H a differential graded Hopf algebra over k, we produce a left-induced model structure on augmented H-comodule algebras and show that the category of bounded below chain complexes of finite-dimensional k-vector spaces has a …
Free products of semisimple tesnor categories are constructed with the help of polygonal presentation. The semisimplicity criterion is obtained for the Bisch-Jones' planar algebras as a byproduct.
In this expository paper we explain in detail how to construct bicategorical colimits of several kinds of tensor categories, for example essentially small finitely cocomplete K-linear tensor categories. The constructions are direct and elementary.
We define a tensor product of linear sites, and a resulting tensor product of Grothendieck categories based upon their representations as categories of linear sheaves. We show that our tensor product is a special case of the tensor product of locally presentable linear categories, and that the tensor product of locally coherent Grothendieck categories is locally coherent if and only if the Deligne tensor product of their abelian categories of finitely presented objects exists. We describe the tensor product of non-commutative projective schemes in terms of Z-algebras, and show that for project…
Let k be any field. J-P. Serre proved that the spectrum of the Grothendieck ring of the k-representation category of a group is connected, and that the same holds in characteristic zero for the representation category of a Lie algebra over k. We say that a tensor category C over k is virtually indecomposable if its Grothendieck ring contains no nontrivial central idempotents. We prove that the following tensor categories are virtually indecomposable: Tensor categories with the Chevalley property; representation categories of affine group schemes; representation categories of formal groups; rep…
Tannaka duals of Hopf algebras inside semisimple tensor categories are used to construct orbifold tensor categories, which are shown to include the Tannaka dual of the dual Hopf algebras. The second orbifolds are then canonically isomorphic to the initial tensor categories.
We endow the homotopy category of well generated (pretriangulated) dg categories with a tensor product satisfying a universal property. The resulting monoidal structure is symmetric and closed with respect to the cocontinuous RHom of dg categories (in the sense of Toën [26]). We give a construction of the tensor product in terms of localisations of dg derived categories, making use of the enhanced derived Gabriel-Popescu theorem [21]. Given a regular cardinal alpha, we define and construct a tensor product of homotopically alpha-cocomplete dg categories and prove that the well generated tensor…
We study exact module categories over the representation categories of finite-dimensional quasi-Hopf algebras. As a consequence we classify exact module categories over some families of pointed tensor categories with cyclic group of invertible objets of order p, where p is a prime number.
Following the analogy between algebras (monoids) and monoidal categories the construction of nucleus for non-associative algebras is simulated on the categorical level. Nuclei of categories of modules are considered as an example.
Are introduced six examples of non-braidable tensor categories which are extensions of the category Comod(H), for H a super-group algebra; and two examples of braided categories where the only possible braiding is the trivial braiding.
Restriction categories were established to handle maps that are partially defined with respect to composition. Tensor topology realises that monoidal categories have an intrinsic notion of space, and deals with objects and maps that are partially defined with respect to this spatial structure. We introduce a construction that turns a firm monoidal category into a restriction category and axiomatise the monoidal restriction categories that arise this way, called tensor-restriction categories.
A graded tensor category over a group $G$ will be called a strongly $G$-graded tensor category if every homogeneous component has at least one multiplicativily invertible object. Our main result is a description of the module categories over a strongly $G$-graded tensor category as induced from module categories over tensor subcategories associated with the subgroups of $G$.
We show that the author's notion of Galois extensions of braided tensor categories [22], see also [3], gives rise to braided crossed G-categories, recently introduced for the purposes of 3-manifold topology [31]. The Galois extensions C \rtimes S are studied in detail, and we determine for which g in G non-trivial objects of grade g exist in C \rtimes S.
We describe equivalence classes of exact indecomposable module categories over a finite graded tensor category. When applied to a pointed fusion category, our results coincide with the ones obtained in [S. Natale, On the equivalence of module categories over a group-theoretical fusion category, SIGMA, Symmetry Integrability Geom. Methods Appl. 13 Paper 042, 9 p. (2017)].
Rewriting systems on words are very useful in the study of monoids. In good cases, they give finite presentations of the monoids, allowing their manipulation by a computer. Even better, when the presentation is confluent and terminating, they provide one with a notion of canonical representative for the elements of the presented monoid. Polygraphs are a higher-dimensional generalization of this notion of presentation, from the setting of monoids to the much more general setting of n-categories. Here, we are interested in proving confluence for polygraphs presenting 2-categories, which can be s…
We aim to study Morita theory for tensor triangulated categories. For two finite tensor categories having no projective simple objects, we prove that their stable equivalence induced by an exact $\Bbbk$-linear monoidal functor can be lifted to a tensor equivalence under some certain conditions.
The purpose of this article is to study the existence of Deligne's tensor product of abelian categories by comparing it with the well-known ten- sor product of finitely cocomplete categories. The main result states that the former exists precisely when the latter is an abelian category, and moreover in this case both tensor products coincide. An example of two abelian categories whose Deligne tensor product does not exist is given.
We generalize a recent result by J.F. Carlson to finite tensor categories having finitely generated cohomology. Specifically, we show that if the Krull dimension of the cohomology ring is sufficiently large, then there exist infinitely many non-isomorphic and nontrivial bounded complexes of projective objects, and with small homology. We also prove a version for finite dimensional algebras with finitely generated cohomology.
We study the question of dualizability in higher Morita categories of locally presentable tensor categories and braided tensor categories. Our main results are that the 3-category of rigid tensor categories with enough compact projectives is 2-dualizable, that the 4-category of rigid braided tensor categories with enough compact projectives is 3-dualizable, and that (in characteristic zero) the 4-category of braided fusion categories is 4-dualizable. Via the cobordism hypothesis, this produces respectively 2, 3 and 4-dimensional framed local topological field theories. In particular, we produc…
A graded tensor category over a group $G$ will be called a crossed product tensor category if every homogeneous component has at least one multiplicatively invertible object. Our main result is a description of the crossed product tensor categories, graded monoidal functors, monoidal natural transformations, and braiding in terms of coherent outer $G$-actions over tensor categories.
This paper gives a simple presentation of the free star-autonomous category over a category, based on Eilenberg-Kelly-MacLane graphs and Trimble rewiring, yielding a full coherence theorem: the commutativity of diagrams of canonical maps is decidable.
Given a tensor functor between tensor categories $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{D}$, we give criteria that, under certain assumptions, the Frobeniusness of $\mathcal{C}$ or $\mathcal{D}$ implies the Frobeniusness of the other one. We also give an affirmative answer to Natale's question asking if the class of Frobenius tensor categories is closed under exact sequences.
In this paper, we generalize Izumi's result on uniqueness of realization of finite C$^*$-tensor categories in the endomorphism category of the injective factor of type II_1 for finitely generated strongly amenable C$^*$-tensor categories by applying Popa's classification theorem of strongly amenable subfactors of type III_1.
In this paper we classify all semisimple tensor categories with the same fusion rules as $\operatorname{Rep}(SO(4))$, or one of the associated truncations. We show that such categories are explicitly classified by two non-zero complex numbers. Furthermore we show these tensor categories are always braided, and there exist exactly 8 braidings.
We define equivariantization of tensor categories under tensor group scheme actions and give necessary and sufficient conditions for an exact sequence of tensor categories to be an equivariantization under a finite group or finite group scheme action. We introduce the notion of central exact sequence of tensor categories and use it in order to present an alternative formulation of some known characterizations of equivariantizations for fusion categories, and to extend these characterizations to equivariantizations of finite tensor categories under finite group scheme actions. In particular, we…
Under some assumptions we prove that the Deligne tensor product of categories of constructible perverse sheaves on pseudomanifolds X and Y is the category of constructible perverse sheaves on X\times Y. The Deligne external tensor product functor is identified with the geometrical external tensor product.
If for a vector space V of dimension g over a characteristic zero field we denote by $\wedge^iV$ its alternating powers, and by $V^\vee$ its linear dual, then there are natural Poincaré isomorphisms: $\wedge^i V^\vee \cong \wedge^{g-i} V$. We describe an analogous result for objects in rigid pseudo-abelian $\mathbb{Q}$-linear ACU tensor categories.
In this paper we generalize Tannakian formalism to fiber functors over general tensor categories. We will show that (under some technical conditions) if the fiber functor has a section, then the source category is equivalent to the category of comodules over a Hopf algebra in the target category. We will also give a description of this Hopf algebra using the notion of framed objects.
The category of small 2-categories has two monoidal structures due to John Gray: one biclosed and one closed. We propose a formalisation of the construction of the right internal and internal homs of these monoidal structures.
For a large class of geometric objects, the passage to categories of quasi-coherent sheaves provides an embedding in the 2-category of abelian tensor categories. The notion of weakly Tannakian categories introduced by the author gives a characterization of tensor categories in the image of this embedding. However, this notion requires additional structure to be present, namely a fiber functor. For the case of classical Tannakian categories in characteristic zero, Deligne has found intrinsic properties - expressible entirely within the language of tensor categories - which are necessary and suf…
We give a formula for the relative Deligne tensor product of two indecomposable finite semisimple module categories over a pointed braided fusion category over an algebraically closed field.
In this short note we investigate the process of constructing auto-equivalences of modular tensor categories using invertible objects. We derive conditions on the invertible object for the resulting auto-equivalence to be either monoidal, braided, or pivotal. We also discuss the composition of these auto-equivalences constructed from invertible objects. To demonstrate the practicality of this construction, we construct auto-equivalences of several real-world examples of modular tensor categories.
