We define a tensor product of linear sites, and a resulting tensor product of Grothendieck categories based upon their representations as categories of linear sheaves. We show that our tensor product is a special case of the tensor product of locally presentable linear categories, and that the tensor product of locally coherent Grothendieck categories is locally coherent if and only if the Deligne tensor product of their abelian categories of finitely presented objects exists. We describe the tensor product of non-commutative projective schemes in terms of Z-algebras, and show that for projective schemes our tensor product corresponds to the usual product scheme.
The general theory of Grothendieck categories is presented. We systemize the principle methods and results of the theory, showing how these results can be used for studying rings and modules.
We prove that the 2-category Grt of Grothendieck abelian categories with colimit preserving functors and natural transformations is a bicategory of fractions in the sense of Pronk of the 2-category Site of linear sites with continuous morphisms of sites and natural transformations. This result can potentially be used to make the tensor product of Grothendieck categories from earlier work by Lowen, Shoikhet and the author into a bi-monoidal structure on Grt.
We give examples of pairs (G1,G2) where G1 is a Grothendieck category and G2 a full Grothendieck subcategory of G1, the inclusion G2 --> G1 being denoted i, for which R^+i : D^+G2 --> D^+G1 (or even Ri : DG2 --> DG1) is a full embedding. This yields generalizations of some results of Bernstein and Lunts, and of Cline, Parshall and Scott.
We define a notion on preadditive categories which plays a role similar to the notion of a Grothendieck pretopology on an unenriched category. Each such additive pretopology defines an additive Grothendieck topology and suffices to define the sheaf category. This new notion allows us to study the noetherian and subcanonical nature of topologies, to describe easily the meet of a family of topologies and to identify useful universal properties of the sheaf category. As our main application we derive in which ways one can present a tensor category and show that such presentations lead to remarkab…
Every Serre subcategory of an abelian category is assigned a unique type. The type of a Serre subcategory of a Grothendieck category is in the list: $$(0, 0), \ (0, -1), \ (1, -1), \ (0, -2), \ (1, -2), \ (2, -1), \ (+\infty, -\infty);$$ and for each $(m, -n)$ in this list, there exists a Serre subcategory such that its type is $(m, -n)$. This uses right (left) recollements of abelian categories, Tachikawa-Ohtake [TO] on strongly hereditary torsion pairs, and Geigle-Lenzing [GL] on localizing subcategories. If all the functors in a recollement of abelian categories are exact, then the recollem…
For any small involutive quantaloid Q we define, in terms of symmetric quantaloid-enriched categories, an involutive quantaloid Rel(Q) of Q-sheaves and relations, and a category Sh(Q) of Q-sheaves and functions; the latter is equivalent to the category of symmetric maps in the former. We prove that Rel(Q) is the category of relations in a topos if and only if Q is a modular, locally localic and weakly semi-simple quantaloid; in this case we call Q a Grothendieck quantaloid. It follows that Sh(Q) is a Grothendieck topos whenever Q is a Grothendieck quantaloid. Any locale L is a Grothendieck qua…
We define and study opfibrations of $V$-enriched categories when $V$ is an extensive monoidal category whose unit is terminal and connected. This includes sets, simplicial sets, categories, or any locally cartesian closed category with disjoint coproducts and connected unit. We show that for an ordinary category $B$, there is an equivalence of 2-categories between $V$-enriched opfibrations over the free $V$-category on $B$, and pseudofunctors from $B$ to the 2-category of $V$-categories. This generalizes the classical ($Set$-enriched) Grothendieck correspondence.
The aim of this paper is to present a simplified version of the notion of $\infty$-groupoid developed by Grothendieck in "Pursuing Stacks" and to introduce a definition of $\infty$-categories inspired by Grothendieck's approach.
In this work we compute the triangulated Grothendieck groups for each of the family of discrete cluster categories of Dynkin type $A_{\infty}$ as introduced by Holm-Jorgensen. Subsequently, we also compute the Grothendieck group of a completion of these discrete cluster categories in the sense of Paquette-Yildirim.
We treat the problem of lifting bicategories into double categories through categories of vertical morphisms. We make use of a specific instance of the Grothendieck construction to provide, for every bicategory equipped with a possible vertical category, together with a suitable monoidal pre-cosheaf relating these two structures, a double category lifting the decorated bicategory along the category of vertical morphisms provided as set of initial conditions. We prove in particular that every decorated bicategory admits a lift to a double category. We study relations of instances of our constru…
The derived category $D[C,V]$ of the Grothendieck category of enriched functors $[C,V]$, where $V$ is a closed symmetric monoidal Grothendieck category and $C$ is a small $V$-category, is studied. We prove that if the derived category $D(V)$ of $V$ is a compactly generated triangulated category with certain reasonable assumptions on compact generators or $K$-injective resolutions, then the derived category $D[C,V]$ is also compactly generated triangulated. Moreover, an explicit description of these generators is given.
The Grothendieck construction is a classical correspondence between diagrams of categories and coCartesian fibrations over the indexing category. In this paper we consider the analogous correspondence in the setting of model categories. As a main result, we establish an equivalence between suitable diagrams of model categories indexed by $\mathcal{M}$ and a new notion of \textbf{model fibrations} over $\mathcal{M}$. When $\mathcal{M}$ is a model category, our construction endows the Grothendieck construction with a model structure which gives a presentation of Lurie's $\infty$-categorical Grot…
We define model category structures on the category of chain complexes over a Grothendieck abelian category depending on the choice of a generating family, and we study their behaviour with respect to tensor products and stabilization. This gives convenient tools to construct and understand triangulated categories of motives and we consider here the case of mixed motives over a regular base scheme.
This paper classifies the Grothendieck rings of complex fusion categories of multiplicity one up to rank six. Among 72 possible fusion rings, $25$ ones are filtered out by using categorification criteria. Each of the remaining 47 fusion rings admits a unitary complex categorification. We found 6 new Grothendieck rings, categorified by applying a localization approach of the Pentagon Equation.
We introduce systematic methods to construct Grothendieck categories from colored quivers and develop a theory of the specialization orders on the atom spectra of Grothendieck categories. We show that any partially ordered set is realized as the atom spectrum of some Grothendieck category, which is an analog of Hochster's result in commutative ring theory. We also show that there exists a Grothendieck category which has empty atom spectrum but has nonempty injective spectrum.
We lift the standard equivalence between fibrations and indexed categories to an equivalence between monoidal fibrations and monoidal indexed categories, namely weak monoidal pseudofunctors to the 2-category of categories. In doing so, we investigate the relation between this `global' monoidal structure where the total category is monoidal and the fibration strictly preserves the structure, and a `fibrewise' one where the fibres are monoidal and the reindexing functors strongly preserve the structure, first hinted by Shulman. In particular, when the domain is cocartesian monoidal, lax monoidal…
The Grothendieck construction is a process to form a single category from a diagram of small categories. In this paper, we extend the definition of the Grothendieck construction to diagrams of small categories enriched over a symmetric monoidal category satisfying certain conditions. Symmetric monoidal categories satisfying the conditions in this paper include the category of $k$-modules over a commutative ring $k$, the category of chain complexes, the category of simplicial sets, the category of topological spaces, and the category of modern spectra. In particular, we obtain a generalization …
We study the Grothendieck monoid (a monoid version of the Grothendieck group) of an extriangulated category, and give some results which are new even for abelian categories. First, we classify Serre subcategories and dense 2-out-of-3 subcategories using the Grothendieck monoid. Second, in good situations, we show that the Grothendieck monoid of the localization of an extriangulated category is isomorphic to the natural quotient monoid of the original Grothendieck monoid. This includes the cases of the Serre quotient of an abelian category and the Verdier quotient of a triangulated category. As…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a locally noetherian Grothendieck category. In this paper we define and study the section functor on $\mathcal{A}$ with respect to an open subset of ASpec$\mathcal{A}$. Next we define and study local cohomology theory in $\mathcal{A}$ in terms of the section functors. Finally we study abstract local cohomology functor on the derived category $\mathcal{D}^+(\mathcal{A})$.
In an arbitrary Grothendieck category, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the class of $\text{FP}_n$-injective objects to be a torsion class. By doing so, we propose a notion of $n$-hereditary categories. We also define and study the class of $\text{FP}_n$-flat objects in Grothendieck categories with a generating set of small projective objects, and provide several equivalent conditions for this class to be torsion-free. In the end, we present several applications and examples of $n$-hereditary categories in the contexts modules over a ring, chain complexes of modules and categori…
We construct a Grothendieck-Witt space for any stable infinity category with duality. If we apply our construction to perfect complexes over a commutative ring in which 2 is invertible we recover the classical Grothendieck-Witt space. Our Grothendieck-Witt space is a grouplike E-infinity space which is part of a genuine C_2-spectrum, the connective real K-theory spectrum.
In this paper we study categories $(F,\mathbf{C},\mathbf{D})$ and $(\mathbb{F},\mathbf{C},\mathbf{Set})$ and prove them to be fibred on $\mathbf{C}$. Then we examine Grothendieck construction in the context of an ordinary functor $F: \mathbf{C} \rightarrow \mathbf{D}$ through the concept of trivial categorification, using an appropriate functor $\mathbf{F}: \mathbf{C} \xrightarrow{F} \mathbf{D} \xrightarrow{I} \mathbf{Cat}$ to construct $\int_{\mathbf{C}^{op}} \bar{\mathbf{F}}$. This category characterizes a functor as an abstract right category action while its dual $\mathcal{X} \rtimes_{\mat…
Auslander-Reiten duality for module categories is generalised to Grothendieck abelian categories that have a sufficient supply of finitely presented objects. It is shown that Auslander-Reiten duality amounts to the fact that the functor Ext^1(C,-) into modules over the endomorphism ring of C admits a partially defined right adjoint when C is a finitely presented object. This result seems to be new even for module categories. For appropriate schemes over a field, the connection with Serre duality is discussed.
We compute the Grothendieck group of certain 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories appearing naturally in the study of the link between quiver representations and Fomin--Zelevinsky's cluster algebras. In this setup, we also prove a generalization of Fomin--Zelevinsky's mutation rule.
Let $k$ be a field. We show that locally presentable, $k$-linear categories $\mathcal{C}$ dualizable in the sense that the identity functor can be recovered as $\coprod_i x_i\otimes f_i$ for objects $x_i\in \mathcal{C}$ and left adjoints $f_i$ from $\mathcal{C}$ to $\mathrm{Vect}_k$ are products of copies of $\mathrm{Vect}_k$. This partially confirms a conjecture by Brandenburg, the author and T. Johnson-Freyd. Motivated by this, we also characterize the Grothendieck categories containing an object $x$ with the property that every object is a copower of $x$: they are precisely the categories o…
A full subcategory of a Grothendieck category is called deconstructible if it consists of all transfinite extensions of some set of objects. This concept provides a handy framework for structure theory and construction of approximations for subcategories of Grothendieck categories. It also allows to construct model structures and t-structures on categories of complexes over a Grothendieck category. In this paper we aim to establish fundamental results on deconstructible classes and outline how to apply these in the areas mentioned above. This is related to recent work of Gillespie, Enochs, Est…
In this paper we provide purely categorical proofs of two important results of structural Ramsey theory: the result of M.\ Sokić that the free product of Ramsey classes is a Ramsey class and the result of M.\ Bodirsky, M.\Pinsker and T.\ Tsankov that adding constants to the language of a Ramsey class preserves the Ramsey property. The proofs that we present here ignore the model-theoretic background of these statements. Instead, they focus on categorical constructions by which the classes can be constructed, generalizing the original statements along the way. It turns out that the restriction …
For a Grothendieck category having a noetherian generator, we prove that there are only finitely many minimal atoms. This is a noncommutative analogue of the fact that every noetherian scheme has only finitely many irreducible components. It is also shown that each minimal atom is represented by a compressible object.
We introduce the notion of integrality of Grothendieck categories as a simultaneous generalization of the primeness of noncommutative noetherian rings and the integrality of locally noetherian schemes. Two different spaces associated to a Grothendieck category yield respective definitions of integrality, and we prove the equivalence of these definitions using a Grothendieck-categorical version of Gabriel's correspondence, which originally related indecomposable injective modules and prime two-sided ideals for noetherian rings. The generalization of prime two-sided ideals is also used to classi…
The aim of the paper is to discuss the relation subgroups of the Grothendieck groups of extriangulated categories and certain other subgroups. It is shown that a locally finite extriangulated category $\C$ has Auslander-Reiten $\E-$triangles and the relations of the Grothendieck group $K_{0}(\C)$ are generated by the Auslander-Rieten $\E-$triangles. A partial converse result is given when restricting to the triangulated categories with a cluster tilting subcategory: in the triangulated category $\C$ with a cluster tilting subcategory, the relations of the Grothendieck group $K_0(\C)$ are gener…
We introduce a new method to construct a Grothendieck category from a given colored quiver. This is a variant of the construction used to prove that every partially ordered set arises as the atom spectrum of a Grothendieck category. Using the new method, we prove that for every finite partially ordered set, there exists a locally noetherian Grothendieck category such that every nonzero object contains a compressible subobject and its atom spectrum is isomorphic to the given partially ordered set.
We prove that if the Auslander-Reiten triangles generate the relations for the Grothendieck group of a Hom-finite Krull-Schmidt triangulated category with a (co)generator, then the category has only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable objects up to translation. This gives a triangulated converse to a theorem of Butler and Auslander-Reiten on the relations for Grothendieck groups. Our approach has applications in the context of Frobenius categories.
This thesis deals with the general problem of determining when the heart $\mathcal{H}$ of a t-structure in a triangulated category $\mathcal{D}$ is a Grothendieck or a module category. As preliminaries, we study Grothendieck conditions AB3-AB5 for $\mathcal{H}$ in a very general setting. We then concentrate on two familiar examples of smashing t-structures. First, we consider that $\mathcal{D}=\mathcal{D}(\mathcal{G})$ is the (unbounded) derived category of a Grothendieck category $\mathcal{G}$ and that the t-structure is the one associated to a torsion pair $\mathbf{t}=(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{F…
We study the additivity of various geometric invariants involved in Reimann-Roch type formulas and defined via the trace map. To do so in a general context we prove that given any Grothendieck category A, the derived category D(A) has a compatible triangulation in the sense of [May, J.P. :The Additivity of Traces in Triangulated Categories, Advances in Mathematics 163, (2001), 34-73], but not resorting to model categories. The result is proved just using the structural properties inherent to D(A). In the second part of the paper we apply compatibility to prove additivity of traces firstly and …
We consider cohomology of small categories with coefficients in a natural system in the sense of Baues and Wirsching. For any funtor L: K -> CAT, we construct a spectral sequence abutting to the cohomology of the Grothendieck construction of L in terms of the cohomology of K and of L(k), for k an object in K.
A recollement is a decomposition of a given category (abelian or triangulated) into two subcategories with functorial data that enables the glueing of structural information. This paper is dedicated to investigating the behaviour under glueing of some basic properties of abelian categories (well-poweredness, Grothendieck's axioms AB3, AB4 and AB5, existence of a generator) in the presence of a recollement. In particular, we observe that in a recollement of a Grothendieck abelian category the other two categories involved are also Grothendieck abelian and, more significantly, we provide an exam…
We investigate the Jordan-Hölder property (JHP) in exact categories. First, we show that (JHP) holds in an exact category if and only if the Grothendieck monoid introduced by Berenstein and Greenstein is free. Moreover, we give a criterion for this which only uses the Grothendieck group and the number of simple objects. Next, we apply these results to the representation theory of artin algebras. For a large class of exact categories including functorially finite torsion(-free) classes, (JHP) holds precisely when the number of indecomposable projectives is equal to that of simples. We study tor…
The first author constructed a $q$-parameterized spherical category $\sC$ over $\mathbb{C}(q)$ in [Liu15], whose simple objects are labelled by all Young diagrams. In this paper, we compute closed-form expressions for the fusion rule of $\sC$, using Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, as well as the characters (including a generating function), using symmetric functions with infinite variables.
We define a natural 2-categorical structure on the base category of a large class of Grothendieck fibrations. Given any model category $\mathbf{C}$, we apply this construction to a fibration whose fibers are the homotopy categories of the slice categories $\mathbf{C}/A$, and we show that in the case $\mathbf{C}=\mathbf{Top}$, our construction applied to this fibration recovers the usual 2-category of spaces.
