We study the additivity of various geometric invariants involved in Reimann-Roch type formulas and defined via the trace map. To do so in a general context we prove that given any Grothendieck category A, the derived category D(A) has a compatible triangulation in the sense of [May, J.P. :The Additivity of Traces in Triangulated Categories, Advances in Mathematics 163, (2001), 34-73], but not resorting to model categories. The result is proved just using the structural properties inherent to D(A). In the second part of the paper we apply compatibility to prove additivity of traces firstly and then additivity of the Chern character, interpreting this result in terms of a group homomorphism which plays the same role as the Chern character in intersection theory with the i-th Chow group replaced by the i-th Hodge cohomology group.
We define model category structures on the category of chain complexes over a Grothendieck abelian category depending on the choice of a generating family, and we study their behaviour with respect to tensor products and stabilization. This gives convenient tools to construct and understand triangulated categories of motives and we consider here the case of mixed motives over a regular base scheme.
We prove localization and Zariski-Mayer-Vietoris for higher Grothendieck-Witt groups, alias hermitian $K$-groups, of schemes admitting an ample family of line-bundles. No assumption on the characteristic is needed, and our schemes can be singular. Along the way, we prove additivity, fibration and approximation theorems for the hermitian $K$-theory of exact categories with weak equivalences and duality.
Auslander-Reiten duality for module categories is generalised to Grothendieck abelian categories that have a sufficient supply of finitely presented objects. It is shown that Auslander-Reiten duality amounts to the fact that the functor Ext^1(C,-) into modules over the endomorphism ring of C admits a partially defined right adjoint when C is a finitely presented object. This result seems to be new even for module categories. For appropriate schemes over a field, the connection with Serre duality is discussed.
A full subcategory of a Grothendieck category is called deconstructible if it consists of all transfinite extensions of some set of objects. This concept provides a handy framework for structure theory and construction of approximations for subcategories of Grothendieck categories. It also allows to construct model structures and t-structures on categories of complexes over a Grothendieck category. In this paper we aim to establish fundamental results on deconstructible classes and outline how to apply these in the areas mentioned above. This is related to recent work of Gillespie, Enochs, Est…
We introduce the notion of integrality of Grothendieck categories as a simultaneous generalization of the primeness of noncommutative noetherian rings and the integrality of locally noetherian schemes. Two different spaces associated to a Grothendieck category yield respective definitions of integrality, and we prove the equivalence of these definitions using a Grothendieck-categorical version of Gabriel's correspondence, which originally related indecomposable injective modules and prime two-sided ideals for noetherian rings. The generalization of prime two-sided ideals is also used to classi…
We consider the abelian group $PT$ generated by quasi-equivalence classes of pretriangulated DG categories with relations coming from semi-orthogonal decompositions of corresponding triangulated categories. We introduce an operation of "multiplication" $\bullet$ on the collection of DG categories which makes this abelian group into a commutative ring. A few applications are considered: representability of "standard" functors between derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties and a construction of an interesting motivic measure.
We compute the Grothendieck group of the category of abelian varieties over an algebraically closed field $k$. We also compute the Grothendieck group of the category of $A$-isotypic abelian varieties, for any simple abelian variety $A$, assuming $k$ has characteristic 0, and for any elliptic curve $A$ in any characteristic.
We prove several Künneth formulas in motivic homotopy categories and deduce a Verdier pairing in these categories following SGA5, which leads to the characteristic class of a constructible motive, an invariant closely related to the Euler-Poincaré characteristic. We prove an additivity property of the Verdier pairing using the language of derivators, following the approach of May and Groth-Ponto-Shulman; using such a result we show that in the presence of a Chow weight structure, the characteristic class for all constructible motives is uniquely characterized by proper covariance, additivity a…
We lift Grothendieck-Verdier-Spaltenstein's six functor formalism for derived categories of sheaves on ringed spaces over a field to differential graded enhancements. Our main tools come from enriched model category theory.
We introduce a new perspective on the $K$-theory of exact categories via the notion of a CGW-category. CGW-categories are a generalization of exact categories that admit a Qullen $Q$-construction, but which also include examples such as finite sets and varieties. By analyzing Quillen's proofs of dévissage and localization we define ACGW-categories, an analogous generalization of abelian categories for which we prove theorems analogous to dévissage and localization. In particular, although the category of varieties is not quite ACGW, the category of reduced schemes of finite type is; applying d…
A generalization of topos theory is proposed giving an abstract realization of such categories as, say, the categories of manifolds and of Grothendieck schemes on the one hand, and permitting one, on the other hand, a view on "non-commutative" or, more generally, "universal" algebraic geometry, which is alternative to already existing, and is closer, in some sense, to the classical Grothendieck's construction of commutative schemes. Another immediate application of the theory developed is construction of an extension of the category of Grothendieck schemes to the category of "etale schemes" co…
Motivated by traces of matrices and Euler characteristics of topological spaces, we expect abstract traces in a symmetric monoidal category to be "additive". When the category is "stable" in some sense, additivity along cofiber sequences is a question about the interaction of stability and the monoidal structure. May proved such an additivity theorem when the stable structure is a triangulation, based on new axioms for monoidal triangulated categories. In this paper we use stable derivators instead, which are a different model for "stable homotopy theories". We define and study monoidal struct…
We construct geometric lifts of the Bost-Connes algebra to Grothendieck rings and to the associated assembler categories and spectra, as well as to certain categories of Nori motives. These categorifications are related to the integral Bost-Connes algebra via suitable Euler characteristic type maps and zeta functions, and in the motivic case via fiber functors. We also discuss aspects of F1-geometry, in the framework of torifications, that fit into this general setting.
The Grothendieck monoid of an exact category is a monoid version of the Grothendieck group. We use it to classify Serre subcategories of an exact category and to reconstruct the topology of a noetherian scheme. We first construct bijections between (i) the set of Serre subcategories of an exact category, (ii) the set of faces of its Grothendieck monoid, and (iii) the monoid spectrum of its Grothendieck monoid. By using (ii), we classify Serre subcategories of exact categories related to a finite dimensional algebra and a smooth projective curve. In particular, we determine the Grothendieck mon…
This paper proves the Beilinson-Soul{é} vanishing conjecture for motives attached to the moduli spaces of curves of genus 0 with n marked points. As part of the proof, it is also proved that these motives are mixed Tate. As a consequence of Levine's work, one obtains then well defined categories of mixed Tate motives over the moduli spaces of curves . It is shown that morphisms between moduli spaces forgetting marked points and embedding as boundary components induce functors between those categories and how tangential bases points fit in these functorialities. Tannakian formalism attaches gro…
The paper studies categories of definable subassignments with some category equivalences to semi-algebraic and constructible subsets of arc spaces of algebraic varieties. These materials allow us to compare the motivic measure of Cluckers-Loeser and the one of Denef-Loeser in certain classes of definable subassignments.
In this paper we give a construction of phantom categories, i.e. admissible triangulated subcategories in bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties that have trivial Hochschild homology and trivial Grothendieck group. We also prove that these phantom categories are phantoms in a stronger sense, namely, they have trivial K-motives and, hence, all their higher K-groups are trivial too.
We prove that the derived categories of abelian categories have unique enhancements -- all of them, the unbounded, bounded, bounded above and bounded below derived categories. The unseparated and left completed derived categories of a Grothendieck abelian category are also shown to have unique enhancements. Finally we show that the derived category of complexes with quasi-coherent cohomology and the category of perfect complexes have unique enhancements for quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes.
Let (X;OX) be a locally noetherian scheme with a dualizing complex D. We prove that DOX - : K(PinfX)----> K(InjX) is an equivalence of triangulated categories where K(InjX) is the homotopy category of injective quasi-coherent OX- modules and K(PinfX) is the homotopy category of pure injective flat quasi-coherent OX-modules. Where X is affine, we show that this equivalence is the infinite completion of the Grothendieck duality theorem. Furthermore, we prove that D OX - induces an equivalence between the pure derived category of flats and the pure derived category of absolutely pure quasi-cohere…
This book is an introduction to 2-categories and bicategories, assuming only the most elementary aspects of category theory. A review of basic category theory is followed by a systematic discussion of 2-/bicategories, pasting diagrams, lax functors, 2-/bilimits, the Duskin nerve, 2-nerve, adjunctions and monads in bicategories, 2-monads, biequivalences, the Bicategorical Yoneda Lemma, and the Coherence Theorem for bicategories. Grothendieck fibrations and the Grothendieck construction are discussed next, followed by tricategories, monoidal bicategories, the Gray tensor product, and double cate…
Using the localization property, we construct a triangulated category of motives over quasi-projective T-schemes for any coefficient where T is a noetherian separated scheme, and we prove the Grothendieck six operations formalism. We also construct integral étale realization of motives.
Cohomology of a topological space with coefficients in stacks of abelian 2-groups is considered. A 2-categorical analog of the theorem of Grothendieck is proved, relating cohomology of the space with coefficients in a 2-stage spectrum and the Ext groups of appropriate stacks.
A topologically-invariant and additive homology class is mostly not a natural transformation as it is. In this paper we discuss turning such a homology class into a natural transformation; i.e., a "categorification" of it. In a general categorical set-up we introduce a generalized relative Grothendieck group from a cospan of functors of categories and also consider a categorification of additive invariants on objects. As an example, we obtain a general theory of characteristic homology classes of singular varieties.
This book discusses the construction of triangulated categories of mixed motives over a noetherian scheme of finite dimension, extending Voevodsky's definition of motives over a field. In particular, it is shown that motives with rational coefficients satisfy the formalism of the six operations of Grothendieck. This is achieved by studying descent properties of motives, as well as by comparing different presentations of these categories, following and extending insights and constructions of Deligne, Beilinson, Bloch, Thomason, Gabber, Levine, Morel, Voevodsky, Ayoub, Spitzweck, Röndigs, Østvær…
