Let (X;OX) be a locally noetherian scheme with a dualizing complex D. We prove that DOX - : K(PinfX)----> K(InjX) is an equivalence of triangulated categories where K(InjX) is the homotopy category of injective quasi-coherent OX- modules and K(PinfX) is the homotopy category of pure injective flat quasi-coherent OX-modules. Where X is affine, we show that this equivalence is the infinite completion of the Grothendieck duality theorem. Furthermore, we prove that D OX - induces an equivalence between the pure derived category of flats and the pure derived category of absolutely pure quasi-coherent OX-modules.
We prove analogs of Whitehead's theorem (from algebraic topology) for both the Chow groups and for the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves: a morphism between smooth projective varieties whose pushforward is an isomorphism on the Chow groups, or on the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves, is an isomorphism. As a corollary, we show that there are no nontrivial naive $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy equivalences between smooth projective varieties.
Grothendieck proved that if $f:X\longrightarrow Y$ is a proper morphism of nice schemes, then $Rf_*$ has a right adjoint, which is given as tensor product with the relative canonical bundle. The original proof was by patching local data. Deligne proved the existence of the adjoint by a global argument, and Verdier showed that this global adjoint may be computed locally. In this article we show that the existence of the adjoint is an immediate consequence of Brown's representability theorem. It follows almost as immediately, by ``smashing'' arguments, that the adjoint is given by tensor product…
Let $\mathbb{X}$ be a semiseparated Noetherian scheme with a dualizing complex $D$. We lift some well-known triangulated equivalences associated with Grothendieck duality to Quillen equivalences of model categories. In the process we are able to show that the Gorenstein flat model structure, on the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on $\mathbb{X}$, is Quillen equivalent to the Gorenstein injective model structure. Also noteworthy is that we extend the recollement of Krause to hold without the Noetherian condition. Using a set of flat generators, it holds for any quasi-compact semiseparated sc…
In this paper, we prove that the group of homotopy automorphisms of the profinite completion of the operad of little $2$-disks is isomorphic to the profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group. In particular, the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ acts faithfully on the profinite completion of $E_2$ in the homotopy category of profinite weak operads.
Unlike Grothendieck's étale fundamental group, Nori's fundamental group does not fulfill the homotopy exact sequence in general. We give necessary and sufficient conditions which force exactness of the sequence.
A generalization of Grothendieck's non-vanishing theorem is proved for a module which is finite over a local homomorphism. It is also proved that the Gorenstein injective dimension of such a module, if finite, is bounded below by its Krull dimension and is equal to the supremum of the depths of the localizations of the ring over primes in the support of the module.
For a left coherent ring A with every left ideal having a countable set of generators, we show that the coderived category of left A-modules is compactly generated by the bounded derived category of finitely presented left A-modules (reproducing a particular case of a recent result of Stovicek with our methods). Furthermore, we present the definition of a dualizing complex of fp-injective modules over a pair of noncommutative coherent rings A and B, and construct an equivalence between the coderived category of A-modules and the contraderived category of B-modules. Finally, we define the notio…
We develop theory of (possibly large) cotilting objects of injective dimension at most one in general Grothendieck categories. We show that such cotilting objects are always pure-injective and that they characterize the situation where the Grothendieck category is tilted using a torsion pair to another Grothendieck category. We prove that for Noetherian schemes with an ample family of line bundles a cotilting class is closed under injective envelopes if and only if it is invariant under twists by line bundles, and that such cotilting classes are parametrized by specialization closed subsets di…
The Godement cosimplicial resolution is available for a wide range of categories of sheaves. In this paper we investigate under which conditions of the Grothendieck site and the category of coefficients it can be used to obtain fibrant models and hence to do sheaf homotopy theory. For instance, for which Grothendieck sites and coefficients we can define sheaf cohomology and derived functors through it.
Let C be a small category and G be a tensor Grothendieck category. We define a notion of atness in the category Fun(C; G) of all covariant functors from C to G and show that the inclusion K(FlatA) ---> K(A) has a right adjoint where K(A) is the homotopy category of A and K(FlatA) its subcategory consisting of complexes of at functors. In addition, we find a replacement for the quotient Dpac(FlatA) = K(FlatA)Kp(FlatA) of triangulated categories where Kp(FlatA) is the homotopy category of all pure acyclic complexes of at functors.
Let X be e quasi-compact and semi-separated scheme. If every at quasi- coherent sheaf has finite cotorsion dimension, we prove that X is n-perfect for some n > 0. If X is coherent and n-perfect(not necessarily of finite krull dimension), we prove that every at quasi-coherent sheaf has finite pure injective dimension. Also, we show that there is an equivalence K(PinfX)---> D(FlatX) of homotopy categories, whenever K(PinfX) is the homotopy category of pure injective at quasi-coherent sheaves and D(FlatX) is the pure derived category of at quasi-coherent sheaves.
While the Yoneda embedding and its generalizations have been studied extensively in the literature, the so-called tensor embedding has only received little attention. In this paper, we study the tensor embedding for closed symmetric monoidal categories and show how it is connected to the notion of geometrically purity, which has recently been investigated in works of Enochs, Estrada, Gillespie, and Odabaşı. More precisely, for a Gro\-thendieck cosmos---that is, a bicomplete Grothendick category $\mathcal{V}$ with a closed symmetric monoidal structure---we prove that the geometrically pure exac…
We establish new structures on Grothendieck-Witt rings, including a GW(k)-module structure on the unit group GW(k)^x and a presentation of \ul{GW}^x as an infinite Gm-loop sheaf. Even though our constructions are motivated by speculations in stable A1-homotopy theory, our arguments are purely algebraic.
Toen has interpreted the schematization problem as originally imagined by Grothendieck in "Pursuing Stacks" in such a way that solution(s) to this problem could be given. As he pointed out, there are many solutions available, and he gave two constructions solving this problem. What we do in the present work is reconsider what Grothendieck initially had in mind and develop a formalism that provides a concept of "schematization" and corresponding homotopy groups of "schematized" homotopy types. In our view this can be realized if we generalize topological spaces to symmetric spectra, and the map…
Given a small simplicial category $\C$ whose underlying ordinary category is equipped with a Grothendieck topology $τ$, we construct a model structure on the category of simplicially enriched presheaves on $\C$ where the weak equivalences are the local weak equivalences of the underlying (non-enriched) simplicial presheaves. We show that this model category is a $t$-complete model topos and describe the Grothendieck topology $[τ]$ on the homotopy category of $\C$ that corresponds to this model topos. After we first review a proof showing that the motivic homotopy theory is not a model topos, w…
We introduce the notion of integrality of Grothendieck categories as a simultaneous generalization of the primeness of noncommutative noetherian rings and the integrality of locally noetherian schemes. Two different spaces associated to a Grothendieck category yield respective definitions of integrality, and we prove the equivalence of these definitions using a Grothendieck-categorical version of Gabriel's correspondence, which originally related indecomposable injective modules and prime two-sided ideals for noetherian rings. The generalization of prime two-sided ideals is also used to classi…
We prove that Toen's secondary Grothendieck ring is isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of smooth proper pretriangulated dg categories previously introduced by Bondal, Larsen and Lunts. Along the way, we show that those short exact sequences of dg categories in which the first term is smooth proper and the second term is proper are necessarily split. As an application, we prove that the canonical map from the derived Brauer group to the secondary Grothendieck ring has the following injective properties: in the case of a commutative ring of characteristic zero, it distinguishes between dg Azuma…
We study the structure of the rational motivic stable homotopy category over general base schemes. Our first class of results concerns the six operations: we prove absolute purity, stability of constructible objects, and Grothendieck-Verdier duality for SH_Q. Next, we prove that SH_Q is canonically SL-oriented; we compare SH_Q with the category of rational Milnor-Witt motives; and we relate the rational bivariant A^1-theory to Chow-Witt groups. These results are derived from analogous statements for the minus part of SH[1/2].
We prove a topological invariance statement for the Morel-Voevodsky motivic homotopy category, up to inverting exponential characteristics of residue fields. This implies in particular that SH[1/p] of characteristic p>0 schemes is invariant under passing to perfections. Among other applications we prove Grothendieck-Verdier duality in this context.
Let $f\colon Y \to X$ be a proper flat morphism of locally noetherian schemes. Then, the locus in $X$ over which $f$ is smooth is stable under generization. We prove that under suitable assumptions on the formal fibers of $X$, the same property holds for other local properties of morphisms, even if $f$ is only closed and flat. Our proof of this statement reduces to a purely local question known as Grothendieck's localization problem. To answer Grothendieck's problem, we provide a general framework that gives a uniform treatment of previously known cases of this problem, and also solves this pr…
The category of effective Grothendieck-Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ (and Witt-motives $\mathbf{DM}^W_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$) by Voevodsky-Suslin method starting with some category of GW-correspondences (and Witt-correspondences) over a perfect field $k$, $char\,k\neq 2$, is defined. The functor $M^{GW}_{eff}\colon Sm_k\to \mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)$ of Grothendieck-Witt-motives of smooth varieties is computed and it is proved that for any smooth scheme $X$ and homotopy invariant sheave with GW-transfers $F$ $$ Hom_{\mathbf{DM}^{GW}_{\mathrm{eff},-}(k)}(M^{GW}_{ef…
We define the derived category of a concrete category in a way which extends the usual definition of the derived category of a ring, and we prove that the bounded-below derived category of $\Spec \mathbb{M}_0$ (an approximation, used by e.g. Connes and Consani, to "$\Spec$ of the field with one element") is the stable homotopy category of connective spectra. We also describe some basic features of Grothendieck duality for the map from $\Spec \mathbb{Z}$ to $\Spec \mathbb{M}_0$, or, what comes to the same thing, the map from $\Spec \mathbb{Z}$ to $\Spec$ of the sphere spectrum; these basic feat…
We clarify the relationship between Grothendieck duality à la Neeman and the Wirthmüller isomorphism à la Fausk-Hu-May. We exhibit an interesting pattern of symmetry in the existence of adjoint functors between compactly generated tensor-triangulated categories, which leads to a surprising trichotomy: There exist either exactly three adjoints, exactly five, or infinitely many. We highlight the importance of so-called relative dualizing objects and explain how they give rise to dualities on canonical subcategories. This yields a duality theory rich enough to capture the main features of Grothen…
We consider the category $\operatorname{Qcoh}\mathbb{X}$ of quasicoherent sheaves where $\mathbb{X}$ is a weighted noncommutative regular projective curve over a field $k$. This category is a hereditary, locally noetherian Grothendieck category. We classify all indecomposable pure-injective sheaves and all cotilting sheaves of slope $\infty$. In the cases of nonnegative orbifold Euler characteristic this leads to a classification of pure-injective indecomposable sheaves and a description of all large cotilting sheaves in $\operatorname{Qcoh}\mathbb{X}$.
We look at homotopy-coherent diagrams of spaces (after Segal, Leitch, Vogt, Mather, Cordier) over a Grothendieck site; we call these ``flexible presheaves''. After some preliminary materiel, we define the ``flexible sheaf'' condition. This descent condition (known to Thomason) is the same as what Jardine called being ``flasque'' with respect to the presheaves representable by objects in the site; and it is more recently known as the condition of being an $n$-stack. We construct the flexible sheaf associated to a flexible presheaf in the $n$-truncated case, as an application of a certain natura…
