We compute the sandpile groups of families of planar graphs having a common weak dual by evaluating the indeterminates of the critical ideals of the weak dual at the lengths of the cycles bounding the interior faces. This method allow us to determine the algebraic structure of the sandpile groups of outerplanar graphs, and can be used to compute the sandpile groups of many other planar graph families. Finally, we compute the identity element for the sandpile groups of the dual graphs of many outerplane graphs.
A proof that every outerplanar graph is Δ+2 colorable. This is slightly stronger then an unpublished result of Wang Shudong, Ma Fangfang, Xu Jin, and Yan Lijun proving the same for 2-connected outerplanar graphs.
Let $C_t$ be a cycle of length $t$, and let $P_1,\ldots,P_t$ be $t$ polygon chains. A polygon flower $F=(C_t; P_1,\ldots,P_t)$ is a graph obtained by identifying the $i$th edge of $C_t$ with an edge $e_i$ that belongs to an end-polygon of $P_i$ for $i=1,\ldots,t$. In this paper, we first give an explicit formula for the sandpile group $S(F)$ of $F$, which shows that the structure of $S(F)$ only depends on the numbers of spanning trees of $P_i$ and $P_i/ e_i$, $i=1,\ldots,t$. By analyzing the arithmetic properties of those numbers, we give a simple formula for the minimum number of generators o…
Felsner, Li and Trotter showed that the dimension of the adjacency poset of an outerplanar graph is at most 5, and gave an example of an outerplanar graph whose adjacency poset has dimension 4. We improve their upper bound to 4, which is then best possible.
We calculate the outerplanar crossing numbers of complete multipartite graphs which have $n$ partite sets with $m$ vertices and one partite set with $p$ vertices, where either $p|mn$ or $mn|p$.
In 2015, Felsner, Trotter, and Wiechert showed that posets with outerplanar cover graphs have bounded dimension. We generalise this result to posets with $k$-outerplanar cover graphs. Namely, we show that posets with $k$-outerplanar cover graph have dimension $\mathcal{O}(k^3)$. As a consequence, we show that every poset with a planar cover graph and height $h$ has dimension $\mathcal{O}(h^3)$. This improves the previously best known bound of $\mathcal{O}(h^6)$ by Kozik, Micek and Trotter.
An injective coloring of a graph is a vertex coloring where two vertices with common neighbor receive distinct colors. The minimum integer $k$ that $G$ has a $k-$injective coloring is called injective chromatic number of $G$ and denoted by $χ_i(G)$. In this paper, the injective chromatic number of outerplanar graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ and girth $g$ is studied. It is shown that for every outerplanar graph, $χ_i(G)\leq Δ+2$, and this bound is tight. Then, it is proved that for outerplanar graphs with $Δ=3$, $χ_i(G)\leq Δ+1$ and the bound is tight for outerplanar graphs of girth three and $4…
We determine the exact and asymptotic number of unlabeled outerplanar graphs. The exact number g_n of unlabeled outerplanar graphs on n vertices can be computed in polynomial time, and g_n is asymptotically $g n^{-5/2}ρ^{-n}$, where $g\approx0.00909941$ and $ρ^{-1}\approx7.50360$ can be approximated. Using our enumerative results we investigate several statistical properties of random unlabeled outerplanar graphs on n vertices, for instance concerning connectedness, chromatic number, and the number of edges. To obtain the results we combine classical cycle index enumeration with recent results…
A graph is outerplanar if it can be embedded in a plane such that all vertices lie on its outer face. The outerplanar Turán number of a given graph $H$, denoted by ${\rm ex}_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges over all outerplanar graphs on $n$ vertices which do not contain a copy of $H$. In this paper, the outerplanar Turán numbers of cycles and paths are completely determined.
The spread of a graph is the difference between the largest and most negative eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. We show that for sufficiently large $n$, the $n$-vertex outerplanar graph with maximum spread is a vertex joined to a linear forest with $Ω(n)$ edges. We conjecture that the extremal graph is a vertex joined to a path on $n-1$ vertices.
We study vertex colorings of the square $G^2$ of an outerplanar graph $G$. We find the optimal bound of the inductiveness, chromatic number and the clique number of $G^2$ as a function of the maximum degree $Δ$ of $G$ for all $Δ\in \nats$. As a bonus, we obtain the optimal bound of the choosability (or the list-chromatic number) of $G^2$ when $Δ\geq 7$. In the case of chordal outerplanar graphs, we classify exactly which graphs have parameters exceeding the absolute minimum.
The distinguishing number (index) $D(G)$ ($D'(G)$) of a graph $G$ is the least integer $d$ such that $G$ has a vertex (edge) labeling with $d$ labels that is preserved only by a trivial automorphism. In this paper we consider the maximal outerplanar graphs (MOP graphs) and show that MOP graphs, except $K_3$, can be distinguished by at most two vertex (edge) labels. We also compute the distinguishing number and the distinguishing index of Halin and Mycielskian graphs.
It is shown that for any outerplanar graph G there is a one to one mapping of the vertices of G to the plane, so that the number of distinct distances between pairs of connected vertices is at most three. This settles a problem of Carmi, Dujmovic, Morin and Wood. The proof combines (elementary) geometric, combinatorial, algebraic and probabilistic arguments.
A star edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring of $G$ without bichromatic paths or cycles of length four. The it star chromatic index, $χ_{st}^{'} (G ),$ of $G$ is the minimum number $k$ for which $G$ has a star edge coloring by $k$ colors. In \cite{LB}, L. Bezegov$\acute{a}$ et al. conjectured that $χ_{st}^{'} (G )\leq \lfloor\frac{3Δ}{2}\rfloor+1$ when $G$ is an outerplanar graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3.$ In this paper we obtained that $χ_{st}^{'}(G) \leq Δ+6$ when $G$ is an 2-connected outerplanar graph with diameter 2 or 3. If $G$ is an 2-connected outerplanar graph wit…
In this paper, we investigate rainbow connection number $rc(G)$ of bridgeless outerplanar graphs $G$ with diameter 2 or 3. We proved the following results: If $G$ has diameter $2,$ then $rc(G)=3$ for fan graphs $F_{n}$ with $n\geq 7$ or $C_5,$ otherwise $rc(G)=2;$ if $G$ has diameter $3,$ then $rc(G)\leq 4$ and the bound is sharp.
The sandpile group of a graph is a well-studied object that combines ideas from algebraic graph theory, group theory, dynamical systems, and statistical physics. A graph's sandpile group is part of a larger algebraic structure on the graph, known as its sandpile monoid. Most of the work on sandpiles so far has focused on the sandpile group rather than the sandpile monoid of a graph, and has also assumed the underlying graph to be undirected. A notable exception is the recent work of Babai and Toumpakari, which builds up the theory of sandpile monoids on directed graphs from scratch and provide…
Let $H$ be a graph. The generalized outerplanar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex outerplanar graph. Let $P_k$ be the path on $k$ vertices. In this paper we give an exact value of $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_4)$ and a best asymptotic value of $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_5)$. Moreover, we characterize all outerplanar graphs containing $f_{\mathcal{OP}}(n,P_4)$ copies of $P_4$.
We study relations between geometric embeddings of graphs and the spectrum of associated matrices, focusing on outerplanar embeddings of graphs. For a simple connected graph $G=(V,E)$, we define a "good" $G$-matrix as a $V\times V$ matrix with negative entries corresponding to adjacent nodes, zero entries corresponding to distinct nonadjacent nodes, and exactly one negative eigenvalue. We give an algorithmic proof of the fact that it $G$ is a 2-connected graph, then either the nullspace representation defined by any "good" $G$-matrix with corank 2 is an outerplanar embedding of $G$, or else th…
For $1\leq s_1 \le s_2 \le \ldots \le s_k$ and a graph $G$, a packing $(s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_k)$-coloring of $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into sets $V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_k$ such that, for each $1\leq i \leq k$, the distance between any two distinct $x,y\in V_i$ is at least $s_i + 1$. The packing chromatic number, $χ_p(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that $G$ has a packing $(1,2, \ldots, k)$-coloring. It is known that there are trees of maximum degree 4 and subcubic graphs $G$ with arbitrarily large $χ_p(G)$. Recently, there was a series of papers on packing $(s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_k)$…
The $n$-$book ~embedding$ of a graph $G$ is an embedding of the graph $G$ in an $n$-book with the vertices of $G$ on the spine and each edge to the pages without crossing each other. If the degree of vertices of $G$ at most one in each page, the $n$-book embedding is $matching$. The $matching~ book~ thickness$ of graph $G$ is the smallest $n$ so that $G$ can be matching embedded in an $n$-book. In this paper, the matching book thickness of the biconnected outerplanar graphs is determined.
An $L(2, 1)$-labeling of a graph $G$ is an assignment of a nonnegative integer to each vertex of $G$ such that adjacent vertices receive integers that differ by at least two and vertices at distance two receive distinct integers. The span of such a labeling is the difference between the largest and smallest integers used. The $λ$-number of $G$, denoted by $λ(G)$, is the minimum span over all $L(2, 1)$-labelings of $G$. Bodlaender {\it et al.} conjectured that if $G$ is an outerplanar graph of maximum degree $Δ$, then $λ(G)\leq Δ+2$. Calamoneri and Petreschi proved that this conjecture is true …
The article considers the procedure of connection of graphs to the edges of a cyclic graph and its influence on the sandpile group of the graph thus obtained. A series of classes of graphs CH_n(a_1,...,a_n) is defined. Recurrent and non-recurrent formulas for calculating the sandpile groups of all graphs of classes CH_n (a_1, ..., a_n) are proposed.
For a maximal outerplanar graph $G$ of order $n$ at least $3$, Matheson and Tarjan showed that $G$ has domination number at most $n/3$. Similarly, for a maximal outerplanar graph $G$ of order $n$ at least $5$, Dorfling, Hattingh, and Jonck showed, by a completely different approach, that $G$ has total domination number at most $2n/5$ unless $G$ is isomorphic to one of two exceptional graphs of order $12$. We present a unified proof of a common generalization of these two results. For every positive integer $k$, we specify a set ${\cal H}_k$ of graphs of order at least $4k+4$ and at most $4k^2-…
We introduce the class of outerspatial 2-complexes as the natural generalisation of the class of outerplanar graphs to three dimensions. Answering a question of O-joung Kwon, we prove that a locally 2-connected 2-complex is outerspatial if and only if it does not contain a surface of positive genus as a subcomplex and does not have a space minor that is a generalised cone over $K_4$ or $K_{2,3}$. This is applied to nested plane embeddings of graphs; that is, plane embeddings constrained by conditions placed on a set of cycles of the graph.
In a graph $G$, a vertex dominates itself and its neighbors. A subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is said to be a double dominating set of $G$ if $S$ dominates every vertex of $G$ at least twice. The double domination number $γ_{\times 2}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a double dominating set of $G$. We show that if $G$ is a maximal outerplanar graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices, then $γ_{\times 2}(G)\leq \lfloor \frac{2n}{3}\rfloor$. Further, if $n\geq 4$, then $γ_{\times 2}(G)\leq \min \{\lfloor \frac{n+t}{2}\rfloor, n-t\}$, where $t$ is the number of vertices of degree $2$ in $G$. These bounds are shown …
We show that every outerplanar graph $G$ can be linearly embedded in the plane such that the number of distinct distances between pairs of adjacent vertices is at most thirteen and there is no intersection between the image of a vertex and that of an edge not containing it. This extends the work of Alon and the second author, where only overlap between vertices was disallowed, thus settling a problem posed by Carmi, Dujmović, Morin and Wood.
In this paper, we study the maximum spectral radius of outerplanar $3$-uniform hypergraphs. Given a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, the shadow of $\mathcal{H}$ is a graph $G$ with $V(G)= V(\mathcal{H})$ and $E(G) = \{uv: uv \in h \textrm{ for some } h\in E(\mathcal{H})\}$. A graph is \textit{outerplanar} if it can be embedded in the plane such that all its vertices lie on the outer face. A $3$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called \textit{outerplanar} if its shadow has an outerplanar embedding such that every hyperedge of $\mathcal{H}$ is the vertex set of an interior triangular face of the sha…
Given a graph $G$ and a nondecreasing sequence $S=(s_1,\ldots,s_k)$ of positive integers, the mapping $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is called an $S$-packing coloring of $G$ if for any two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $c^{-1}(i)$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is greater than $s_i$. The smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $(1,2,\ldots,k)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted $χ_ρ(G)$. The question of boundedness of the packing chromatic number in the class of subcubic (planar) graphs was investigated in several earlier …
We generalize a theorem of Knuth relating the oriented spanning trees of a directed graph G and its directed line graph LG. The sandpile group is an abelian group associated to a directed graph, whose order is the number of oriented spanning trees rooted at a fixed vertex. In the case when G is regular of degree k, we show that the sandpile group of G is isomorphic to the quotient of the sandpile group of LG by its k-torsion subgroup. As a corollary we compute the sandpile groups of two families of graphs widely studied in computer science, the de Bruijn graphs and Kautz graphs.
The spread of a graph $G$ is the difference between the largest and smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. Gotshall, O'Brien and Tait conjectured that for sufficiently large $n$, the $n$-vertex outerplanar graph with maximum spread is the graph obtained by joining a vertex to a path on $n-1$ vertices. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture by showing that the extremal graph is the graph obtained by joining a vertex to a path on $\lceil (2n-1)/3\rceil$ vertices and $\lfloor(n-2)/3\rfloor$ isolated vertices. For planar graphs, we show that the extremal $n$-vertex planar graph at…
In this article, we give a partial description of the sandpile group of the cone of the cartesian product of graphs in function of the sandpile group of the cone of their factors. Also, we introduce the concept of uniform homomorphism of graphs and prove that every surjective uniform homomorphism of graphs induces an injective homomorphism between their sandpile groups. As an application of these result we obtain an explicit description of a set of generators of the sandpile group of the cone of the hypercube of dimension d.
In this paper, we consider rainbow connection number of maximal outerplanar graphs(MOPs) on algorithmic aspect. For the (MOP) $G$, we give sufficient conditions to guarantee that $rc(G) = diam(G).$ Moreover, we produce the graph with given diameter $d$ and give their rainbow coloring in linear time. X.Deng et al. $\cite{XD}$ give a polynomial time algorithm to compute the rainbow connection number of MOPs by the Maximal fan partition method, but only obtain a compact upper bound. J. Lauri $\cite{JL}$ proved that, for chordal outerplanar graphs given an edge-coloring, to verify whether it is ra…
Let $\mathcal{O}_n$ be the set of all maximal outerplanar graphs of order $n$. Let $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,F)$ denote the maximum positive integer $k$ such that $T\in \mathcal{O}_n$ has no rainbow subgraph $F$ under a $k$-edge-coloring of $T$. Denote by $M_k$ a matching of size $k$. In this paper, we prove that $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_k)\le n+4k-9$ for $n\ge3k-3$, which expressively improves the existing upper bound for $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_k)$. We also prove that $ar(\mathcal{O}_n,M_5)=n+4$ for all $n\ge 15$.
We determine the asymptotic distribution of the p-rank of the sandpile groups of random bipartite graphs. We see that this depends on the ratio between the number of vertices on each side, with a threshold when the ratio between the sides is equal to 1/p. We follow the approach of Melanie Wood and consider random graphs as a special case of random matrices, and rely on a variant the definition of min-entropy given by Maples, in order to obtain useful results about these random matrices. Our results show that unlike the sandpile groups of Erdos-Renyi random graphs, the distribution of the sandp…
The majority of graphs whose sandpile groups are known are either regular or simple. We give an explicit formula for a family of non-regular multi-graphs called thick cycles. A thick cycle graph is a cycle where multi-edges are permitted. Its sandpile group is the direct sum of cyclic groups of orders given by quotients of greatest common divisors of minors of its Laplacian matrix. We show these greatest common divisors can be expressed in terms of monomials in the graph's edge multiplicities.
We consider random directed graphs, and calculate the distribution of the cokernels of their laplacian, following the methods used by Wood. As a corollary, we show that the probability that a random digraph is coeulerian is asymptotically upper bounded by a constant around $0.43$.
We introduce two operators on stable configurations of the sandpile model that provide an algorithmic bijection between recurrent and parking configurations. This bijection preserves their equivalence classes with respect to the sandpile group. The study of these operators in the special case of the complete bipartite graph ${K}_{m,n}$ naturally leads to a generalization of the well known Cyclic Lemma of Dvoretsky and Motzkin, via pairs of periodic bi-infinite paths in the plane having slightly different slopes. We achieve our results by interpreting the action of these operators as an action …
A subset $R\subseteq V(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a general position set if any triple set $R_0$ of $R$ is non-geodesic in $G$, that is, no vertex of $R_0$ lies on any geodesic between the other two vertices of $R_0$ in $G$. Let $\mathcal{R}$ be the set of general position sets of a graph $G$. The general position number of a graph $G$, denoted by $gp(G)$, is defined as $gp(G)=\max\{|R|:R\in\mathcal{R}\}$. In this paper, we determine the bounds on the gp-numbers for any maximal outerplane graph and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs.
Although it has recently been proved that the packing chromatic number is unbounded on the class of subcubic graphs, there exists subclasses in which the packing chromatic number is finite (and small). These subclasses include subcubic trees, base-3 Sierpi{ń}ski graphs and hexagonal lattices. In this paper we are interested in the packing chromatic number of subcubic outerplanar graphs. We provide asymptotic bounds depending on structural properties of the outerplanar graphs and determine sharper bounds for some classes of subcubic outerplanar graphs.
A graph is called pseudo-outerplanar if each block has an embedding on the plane in such a way that the vertices lie on a fixed circle and the edges lie inside the disk of this circle with each of them crossing at most one another. In this paper, we prove that each pseudo-outerplanar graph admits edge decompositions into a linear forest and an outerplanar graph, or a star forest and an outerplanar graph, or two forests and a matching, or $\max\{Δ(G),4\}$ matchings, or $\max\{\lceilΔ(G)/2\rceil,3\}$ linear forests. These results generalize some ones on outerplanar graphs and $K_{2,3}$-minor-fre…
We prove several results concerning a polynomial that arises from the sandpile model on directed graphs; these results are previously only known for undirected graphs. Implicit in the sandpile model is the choice of a sink vertex, and it is conjectured by Perrot and Pham that the polynomial $c_0+c_1y+\ldots c_n y^n$, where $c_i$ is the number of recurrent classes of the sandpile model with level $i$, is independent of the choice of the sink. We prove their conjecture by expressing the polynomial as an invariant of the sinkless sandpile model. We then present a bijection between arborescences o…
A graph is pseudo-outerplanar if each of its blocks has an embedding in the plane so that the vertices lie on a fixed circle and the edges lie inside the disk of this circle with each of them crossing at most one another. In this paper, the total coloring conjecture is completely confirmed for pseudo-outerplanar graphs. In particular, it is proved that the total chromatic number of every pseudo-outerplanar graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 5$ is $Δ+1$.
A graph is pseudo-outerplanar if each of its blocks has an embedding in the plane so that the vertices lie on a fixed circle and the edges lie inside the disk of this circle with each of them crossing at most one another. It is proved that every pseudo-outerplanar graph with maximum degree Δ\geq 5 is totally (Δ+1)-choosable.
