Two types of finite element spaces on triangles are constructed for div-div conforming symmetric tensors. Besides the normal-normal continuity, the stress tensor is continuous at vertices and another trace involving combination of derivatives of stress is identified. Polynomial complex, finite element complex, and Hilbert complex are presented and a commuting diagram between them is given. The constructed div-div conforming elements are exploited to discretize the mixed formulation of the biharmonic equation. Optimal order and superconvergence error analysis is provided. By rotation, finite elements for rot-rot conforming symmetric strain are also obtained.
In this paper, the first family of conforming finite element divdiv complexes on cuboid grids in three dimensions is constructed. Besides, a new family of conforming finite element divdiv complexes with enhanced smoothness on tetrahedral grids is presented. These complexes are exact in the sense that the range of each discrete map is the kernel space of the succeeding one.
Several div-conforming and divdiv-conforming finite elements for symmetric tensors on simplexes in arbitrary dimension are constructed in this work. The shape function space is first split as the trace space and the bubble space. The later is further decomposed into the null space of the differential operator and its orthogonal complement. Instead of characterization of these subspaces of the shape function space, characterization of the dual spaces are provided. Vector div-conforming finite elements are firstly constructed as an introductory example. Then new symmetric div-conforming finite e…
This paper presents the first family of conforming finite element divdiv complexes on tetrahedral grids in three dimensions. In these complexes, finite element spaces of $H(\text{divdiv},Ω;\mathbb{S})$ are from a current preprint [Chen and Huang, arXiv: 2007.12399, 2020] while finite element spaces of both $H(\text{symcurl},Ω;\mathbb{T})$ and $H^1(Ω;\mathbb{R}^3)$ are newly constructed here. It is proved that these finite element complexes are exact. As a result, they can be used to discretize the linearized Einstein-Bianchi system within the dual formulation.
Two types of finite element spaces on a tetrahedron are constructed for divdiv conforming symmetric tensors in three dimensions. The key tools of the construction are the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces and the characterization of the trace operators. First, the divdiv Hilbert complex and its corresponding polynomial complexes are presented. Several decompositions of polynomial vector and tensors spaces are derived from the polynomial complexes. Then, traces for div-div operator are characterized through a Green's identity. Besides the normal-normal component, another trace involving…
A finite element elasticity complex on tetrahedral meshes is devised. The $H^1$ conforming finite element is the smooth finite element developed by Neilan for the velocity field in a discrete Stokes complex. The symmetric div-conforming finite element is the Hu-Zhang element for stress tensors. The construction of an $H(\textrm{inc})$-conforming finite element for symmetric tensors is the main focus of this paper. The key tools of the construction are the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces and the characterization of the trace of the $\textrm{inc}$ operator. The polynomial elasticity co…
A finite element cochain complex on Cartesian meshes of any dimension based on the H1-inner product is introduced. It yields H1-conforming finite element spaces with exterior derivatives in H1. We use a tensor product construction to obtain L2-stable projectors into these spaces which commute with the exterior derivative. The finite element complex is generalized to a family of arbitrary order.
The discrete fracture model (DFM) has been widely used in the simulation of fluid flow in fractured porous media. Traditional DFM uses the so-called hybrid-dimensional approach to treat fractures explicitly as low-dimensional entries (e.g. line entries in 2D media and face entries in 3D media) on the interfaces of matrix cells and then couple the matrix and fracture flow systems together based on the principle of superposition with the fracture thickness used as the dimensional homogeneity factor. Because of this methodology, DFM is considered to be limited on conforming meshes and thus may ra…

We present locally stabilized, conforming space-time finite element methods for parabolic evolution equations on hexahedral decompositions of the space-time cylinder. Tensor-product decompositions allow for anisotropic a priori error estimates, that are explicit in spatial and temporal meshsizes. Moreover, tensor-product finite elements are suitable for anisotropic adaptive mesh refinement strategies provided that an appropriate a posteriori discretization error estimator is available. We present such anisotropic adaptive strategies together with numerical experiments.
In this work, we introduce a new space-time variational formulation of the second-order wave equation, where integration by parts is also applied with respect to the time variable, and a modified Hilbert transformation is used. For this resulting variational setting, ansatz and test spaces are equal. Thus, conforming finite element discretizations lead to Galerkin--Bubnov schemes. We consider a conforming tensor-product approach with piecewise polynomial, continuous basis functions, which results in an unconditionally stable method, i.e., no CFL condition is required. We give numerical example…
This paper presents a new and unified approach to the derivation and analysis of many existing, as well as new discontinuous Galerkin methods for linear elasticity problems. The analysis is based on a unified discrete formulation for the linear elasticity problem consisting of four discretization variables: strong symmetric stress tensor $\dsig$ and displacement $\du$ inside each element, and the modifications of these two variables $\hsig$ and $\hu$ on elementary boundaries of elements. Motivated by many relevant methods in the literature, this formulation can be used to derive most existing …
This paper introduces a new family of mixed finite elements for solving a mixed formulation of the biharmonic equations in two and three dimensions. The symmetric stress $\bmσ=-\nabla^{2}u$ is sought in the Sobolev space $H({\rm{div}}\bm{div},Ω;\mathbb{S})$ simultaneously with the displacement $u$ in $L^{2}(Ω)$. Stemming from the structure of $H(\bm{div},Ω;\mathbb{S})$ conforming elements for the linear elasticity problems proposed by J. Hu and S. Zhang, the $H({\rm{div}}\bm{div},Ω;\mathbb{S})$ conforming finite element spaces are constructed by imposing the normal continuity of $\bm{div}\bmσ$…
We construct conforming finite element elasticity complexes on the Alfeld splits of tetrahedra. The complex consists of vector fields and symmetric tensor fields, interlinked via the linearized deformation operator, the linearized curvature operator, and the divergence operator, respectively. The construction is based on an algebraic machinery that derives the elasticity complex from de~Rham complexes, and smoother finite element differential forms.

We consider the mathematical analysis and numerical approximation of a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that arises in models that have relevance to steady isochoric flows of colloidal suspensions. The symmetric velocity gradient is assumed to be a monotone nonlinear function of the deviatoric part of the Cauchy stress tensor. We prove the existence of a unique weak solution to the problem, and under the additional assumption that the nonlinearity involved in the constitutive relation is Lipschitz continuous we also prove uniqueness of the weak solution. We then construct mix…
We develop a theory of Finite Element Systems, for the purpose of discretizing sections of vector bundles, in particular those arizing in the theory of elasticity. In the presence of curvature we prove a discrete Bianchi identity. In the flat case we prove a de Rham theorem on cohomology groups. We check that some known mixed finite elements for the stress-displacement formulation of elasticity fit our framework. We also define, in dimension two, the first conforming finite element spaces of metrics with good linearized curvature, corresponding to strain tensors with Saint-Venant compatibility…
A family of conforming mixed finite elements with mass lumping on triangular grids are presented for linear elasticity. The stress field is approximated by symmetric $H({\rm div})-P_k (k\geq 3)$ polynomial tensors enriched with higher order bubbles so as to allow mass lumping, which can be viewed as the Hu-Zhang elements enriched with higher order interior bubble functions. The displacement field is approximated by $C^{-1}-P_{k-1}$ polynomial vectors enriched with higher order terms to ensure the stability condition. For both the proposed mixed elements and their mass lumping schemes, optimal …
We introduce and analyze a new mixed finite element method with reduced symmetry for the standard linear model in viscoelasticity. Following a previous approach employed for linear elastodynamics, the present problem is formulated as a second-order hyperbolic partial differential equation in which, after using the motion equation to eliminate the displacement unknown, the stress tensor remains as the main variable to be found. The resulting variational formulation is shown to be well-posed, and a class of $\text{H}(\text{div})$-conforming semi-discrete schemes is proved to be convergent. Then,…
A method of estimating all eigenvalues of a preconditioned discretized scalar diffusion operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions has been recently introduced in T. Gergelits, K.A. Mardal, B.F. Nielsen, Z. Strakoš: Laplacian preconditioning of elliptic PDEs: Localization of the eigenvalues of the discretized operator, SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis 57(3) (2019), 1369-1394. Motivated by this paper, we offer a slightly different approach that extends the previous results in some directions. Namely, we provide bounds on all increasingly ordered eigenvalues of a general diffusion or elastici…
The Galerkin difference (GD) basis is a set of continuous, piecewise polynomials defined using a finite difference like grid of degrees of freedom. The one dimensional GD basis functions are naturally extended to multiple dimensions using the tensor product constructions to quadrilateral elements for discretizing partial differential equations. Here we propose two approaches to handling complex geometries using the GD basis within a discontinuous Galerkin finite element setting: (1) using non-conforming, curvilinear GD elements and (2) coupling affine GD elements with curvilinear simplicial el…
We present an implementation of the trimmed serendipity finite element family, using the open source finite element package Firedrake. The new elements can be used seamlessly within the software suite for problems requiring $H^1$, \hcurl, or \hdiv-conforming elements on meshes of squares or cubes. To test how well trimmed serendipity elements perform in comparison to traditional tensor product elements, we perform a sequence of numerical experiments including the primal Poisson, mixed Poisson, and Maxwell cavity eigenvalue problems. Overall, we find that the trimmed serendipity elements conver…
