In this paper, we provide a systematic discretization of the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) diagrams and complexes over cubical meshes of arbitrary dimension via the use of tensor-product structures of one-dimensional piecewise-polynomial spaces, such as spline and finite element spaces. We demonstrate the construction of the Hessian, the elasticity, and the divdiv complexes as examples for our construction.

We present weighted quadrature for hierarchical B-splines to address the fast formation of system matrices arising from adaptive isogeometric Galerkin methods with suitably graded hierarchical meshes. By exploiting a local tensor-product structure, we extend the construction of weighted rules from the tensor-product to the hierarchical spline setting. The proposed algorithm has a computational cost proportional to the number of degrees of freedom and advantageous properties with increasing spline degree. To illustrate the performance of the method and confirm the theoretical estimates, a selec…

3D objects, modeled using Computer Aided Geometric Design tools, are traditionally represented using a boundary representation (B-rep), and typically use spline functions to parameterize these boundary surfaces. However, recent development in physical analysis, in isogeometric analysis (IGA) in specific, necessitates a volumetric parametrization of the interior of the object. IGA is performed directly by integrating over the spline spaces of the volumetric spline representation of the object. Typically, tensor-product B-spline trivariates are used to parameterize the volumetric domain. A gener…
This article introduces the Tensor Network B-spline model for the regularized identification of nonlinear systems using a nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) approach. Tensor network theory is used to alleviate the curse of dimensionality of multivariate B-splines by representing the high-dimensional weight tensor as a low-rank approximation. An iterative algorithm based on the alternating linear scheme is developed to directly estimate the low-rank tensor network approximation, removing the need to ever explicitly construct the exponentially large weight tensor. This reduces the computa…
We introduce new manifold-based splines that are able to exactly reproduce B-splines on unstructured surface meshes. Such splines can be used in isogeometric analysis (IGA) to represent smooth surfaces of arbitrary topology. Since prevalent computer-aided design (CAD) models are composed of tensor-product B-spline patches, any IGA suitable construction should be able to reproduce B-splines. To achieve this goal, we focus on univariate manifold-based constructions that can reproduce B-splines. The manifold-based splines are constructed by smoothly blending together polynomial interpolants defin…
In this paper we provide a priori error estimates with explicit constants for both the $L^2$-projection and the Ritz projection onto spline spaces of arbitrary smoothness defined on arbitrary grids. This extends the results recently obtained for spline spaces of maximal smoothness. The presented error estimates are in agreement with the numerical evidence found in the literature that smoother spline spaces exhibit a better approximation behavior per degree of freedom, even for low smoothness of the functions to be approximated. First we introduce results for univariate spline spaces, and then …
We show that isogeometric Galerkin discretizations of eigenvalue problems related to the Laplace operator subject to any standard type of homogeneous boundary conditions have no outliers in certain optimal spline subspaces. Roughly speaking, these optimal subspaces are obtained from the full spline space defined on certain uniform knot sequences by imposing specific additional boundary conditions. The spline subspaces of interest have been introduced in the literature some years ago when proving their optimality with respect to Kolmogorov $n$-widths in $L^2$-norm for some function classes. The…
In this paper we present a new class of cubature rules with the aim of accurately integrating weakly singular double integrals. In particular we focus on those integrals coming from the discretization of Boundary Integral Equations for 3D Laplace boundary value problems, using a collocation method within the Isogeometric Analysis paradigm. In such setting the regular part of the integrand can be defined as the product of a tensor product B-spline and a general function. The rules are derived by using first the spline quasi-interpolation approach to approximate such function and then the extens…
In [1], the author considered the problem of the optimal approximation of symmetric surfaces by biquadratic Bézier patches. Unfortunately, the results therein are incorrect, which is shown in this paper by considering the optimal approximation of spherical squares. A detailed analysis and a numerical algorithm are given, providing the best approximant according to the (simplified) radial error, which differs from the one obtained in [1]. The sphere is then approximated by the continuous spline of two and six tensor product quadratic Bézier patches. It is further shown that the $G^1$ smooth spl…

A new differential-recurrence relation for the B-spline functions of the same degree is proved. From this relation, a recursive method of computing the coefficients of B-spline functions of degree $m$ in the Bernstein-Bézier form is derived. Its complexity is proportional to the number of coefficients in the case of coincident boundary knots. This means that, asymptotically, the algorithm is optimal. In other cases, the complexity is increased by at most $O(m^3)$. When the Bernstein-Bézier coefficients of B-spline basis functions are known, it is possible to compute any B-spline function in li…
In Isogeometric Analysis, the computational domain is often described as multi-patch, where each patch is given by a tensor product spline/NURBS parametrization. In this work we propose a FETI-like solver where local inexact solvers exploit the tensor product structure at the patch level. To this purpose, we extend to the isogeometric framework the so-called All-Floating variant of FETI, that allows us to use the Fast Diagonalization method at the patch level. We construct then a preconditioner for the whole system and prove its robustness with respect to the local mesh-size $h$ and patch-size…

In this paper we introduce a $C^1$ spline space over mixed meshes composed of triangles and quadrilaterals, suitable for FEM-based or isogeometric analysis. In this context, a mesh is considered to be a partition of a planar polygonal domain into triangles and/or quadrilaterals. The proposed space combines the Argyris triangle, cf. (Argyris, Fried, Scharpf; 1968), with the $C^1$ quadrilateral element introduced in (Brenner, Sung; 2005) and (Kapl, Sangalli, Takacs; 2019) for polynomial degrees $p\geq 5$. The space is assumed to be $C^2$ at all vertices and $C^1$ across edges, and the splines ar…
In this paper, we propose a space-time least-squares isogeometric method to solve parabolic evolution problems, well suited for high-degree smooth splines in the space-time domain. We focus on the linear solver and its computational efficiency: thanks to the proposed formulation and to the tensor-product construction of space-time splines, we can design a preconditioner whose application requires the solution of a Sylvester-like equation, which is performed efficiently by the fast diagonalization method. The preconditioner is robust w.r.t. spline degree and mesh size. The computational time re…
The paper presents a versatile library of analytic and quasi-analytic complex-valued wavelet packets (WPs) which originate from discrete splines of arbitrary orders. The real parts of the quasi-analytic WPs are the regular spline-based orthonormal WPs designed in [2]. The imaginary parts are the so-called complementary orthonormal WPs, which, unlike the symmetric regular WPs, they are antisymmetric. Tensor products of 1D quasi-analytic WPs provide a diversity of 2D WPs oriented in multiple directions. For example, a set of the fourth-level WPs comprises 62 different directions. The designed co…
In this paper, we introduce the isoGeometric Residual Minimization (iGRM) method. The method solves stationary advection-dominated diffusion problems. We stabilize the method via residual minimization. We discretize the problem using B-spline basis functions. We then seek to minimize the isogeometric residual over a spline space built on a tensor product mesh. We construct the solution over a smooth subspace of the residual. We can specify the solution subspace by reducing the polynomial order, by increasing the continuity, or by a combination of these. The Gramm matrix for the residual minimi…
This paper proposes an isogeometric boundary element method (IGBEM) to solve the electromagnetic scattering problems for three-dimensional doubly-periodic multi-layered structures. The main concerns are the constructions of (i) an open surface (between two layers) and (ii) a vector basis function with using the B-spline functions. Regarding (i), we considered an algorithm to generate a doubly-periodic open surface with the tensor product of the B-spline functions of any degree. Regarding (ii), we employed the vector basis function based on the B-spline functions, which was proposed by Buffa et…

A common strategy in the numerical solution of partial differential equations is to define a uniform discretization of a tensor-product multi-dimensional logical domain, which is mapped to a physical domain through a given coordinate transformation. By extending this concept to a multi-patch setting, simple and efficient numerical algorithms can be employed on relatively complex geometries. The main drawback of such an approach is the inherent difficulty in dealing with singularities of the coordinate transformation. This work suggests a comprehensive numerical strategy for the common situatio…
We tensorize the Faber spline system from [14] to prove sequence space isomorphisms for multivariate function spaces with higher mixed regularity. The respective basis coefficients are local linear combinations of discrete function values similar as for the classical Faber Schauder system. This allows for a sparse representation of the function using a truncated series expansion by only storing discrete (finite) set of function values. The set of nodes where the function values are taken depends on the respective function in a non-linear way. Indeed, if we choose the basis functions adaptively…
This paper develops the equilibrium equations describing the flexoelectric effect in soft dielectrics under large deformations. Previous works have developed related theories using a flexoelectric coupling tensor of mixed material-spatial character. Here, we formulate the model in terms of a flexoelectric tensor completely defined in the material frame, with the same symmetries of the small-strain flexocoupling tensor and leading naturally to objective flexoelectric polarization fields. The energy potential and equilibrium equations are first expressed in terms of deformation and polarization,…
