In this paper we introduce a $C^1$ spline space over mixed meshes composed of triangles and quadrilaterals, suitable for FEM-based or isogeometric analysis. In this context, a mesh is considered to be a partition of a planar polygonal domain into triangles and/or quadrilaterals. The proposed space combines the Argyris triangle, cf. (Argyris, Fried, Scharpf; 1968), with the $C^1$ quadrilateral element introduced in (Brenner, Sung; 2005) and (Kapl, Sangalli, Takacs; 2019) for polynomial degrees $p\geq 5$. The space is assumed to be $C^2$ at all vertices and $C^1$ across edges, and the splines are uniquely determined by $C^2$-data at the vertices, values and normal derivatives at chosen points on the edges, and values at some additional points in the interior of the elements.
The motivation for combining the Argyris triangle element with a recent $C^1$ quadrilateral construction, inspired by isogeometric analysis, is two-fold: on one hand, the ability to connect triangle and quadrilateral finite elements in a $C^1$ fashion is non-trivial and of theoretical interest. We provide not only approximation error bounds but also numerical tests verifying the results. On the other hand, the construction facilitates the meshing process by allowing more flexibility while remaining $C^1$ everywhere. This is for instance relevant when trimming of tensor-product B-splines is performed.
In the presented construction we assume to have (bi)linear element mappings and piecewise polynomial function spaces of arbitrary degree $p\geq 5$. The basis is simple to implement and the obtained results are optimal with respect to the mesh size for $L^\infty$, $L^2$ as well as Sobolev norms $H^1$ and $H^2$.
We present a novel approach for high-order accurate numerical differentiation on unstructured meshes of quadrilateral elements. To differentiate a given function, an auxiliary function with greater smoothness properties is defined which when differentiated provides the derivatives of the original function. The method generalises traditional finite difference methods to meshes of arbitrary topology in any number of dimensions for any order of derivative and accuracy. We demonstrate the accuracy of the numerical scheme using dual quadrilateral meshes and a refinement method based on subdivision …
Isogeometric Analysis generalizes classical finite element analysis and intends to integrate it with the field of Computer-Aided Design. A central problem in achieving this objective is the reconstruction of analysis-suitable models from Computer-Aided Design models, which is in general a non-trivial and time-consuming task. In this article, we present a novel spline construction, that enables model reconstruction as well as simulation of high-order PDEs on the reconstructed models. The proposed almost-$C^1$ are biquadratic splines on fully unstructured quadrilateral meshes (without restrictio…
Easy to construct and optimally convergent generalisations of B-splines to unstructured meshes are essential for the application of isogeometric analysis to domains with non-trivial topologies. Nonetheless, especially for hexahedral meshes, the construction of smooth and optimally convergent isogeometric analysis basis functions is still an open question. We introduce a simple partition of unity construction that yields smooth blended B-splines, referred to as SB-splines, on semi-structured quadrilateral and hexahedral meshes, namely on mostly structured meshes with a few sufficiently separate…
The $L^2$-orthogonal projection $Π_h:L^2(Ω)\rightarrow\mathbb{V}_h$ onto a finite element (FE) space $\mathbb{V}_h$ is called $H^1$-stable iff $\|\nablaΠ_h u\|_{L^2(Ω)}\leq C\|u\|_{H^1(Ω)}$, for any $u\in H^1(Ω)$ with a positive constant $C\neq C(h)$ independent of the mesh size $h>0$. In this work, we discuss local criteria for the $H^1$-stability of adaptively refined meshes. We show that adaptive refinement strategies for quadrilateral meshes in 2D (Q-RG and Q-RB), introduced originally in Bank et al. 1982 and Kobbelt 1996, are $H^1$-stable for FE spaces of polynomial degree $p=2,\ldots,9$.
A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible elasticity and Stokes equations using primal and dual meshes with quadrilateral and hexahedral grids
High-order entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear conservation laws reproduce a discrete entropy inequality by combining entropy conservative finite volume fluxes with summation-by-parts (SBP) discretization matrices. In the DG context, on tensor product (quadrilateral and hexahedral) elements, SBP matrices are typically constructed by collocating at Lobatto quadrature points. Recent work has extended the construction of entropy-stable DG schemes to collocation at more accurate Gauss quadrature points. In this work, we extend entropy-stable Gauss collocation schemes t…

In this paper, based on the idea of self-adjusting steepness based schemes[5], a two-dimensional calculation method of steepness parameter is proposed, and thus a two-dimensional self-adjusting steepness based limiter is constructed. With the application of such limiter to the over-intersection based remapping framework, a low dissipation remapping method has been proposed that can be applied to the existing ALE method.
In this paper we study the dimension of splines of mixed smoothness on axis-aligned T-meshes. This is the setting when different orders of smoothness are required across the edges of the mesh. Given a spline space whose dimension is independent of its T-mesh's geometric embedding, we present constructive and sufficient conditions that ensure that the smoothness across a subset of the mesh edges can be reduced while maintaining stability of the dimension. The conditions have a simple geometric interpretation. Examples are presented to show the applicability of the results on both hierarchical a…
We present a novel method named truncated hierarchical unstructured splines (THU-splines) that supports both local $h$-refinement and unstructured quadrilateral meshes. In a THU-spline construction, an unstructured quadrilateral mesh is taken as the input control mesh, where the degenerated-patch method [18] is adopted in irregular regions to define $C^1$-continuous bicubic splines, whereas regular regions only involve $C^2$ B-splines. Irregular regions are then smoothly joined with regular regions through the truncation mechanism [29], leading to a globally smooth spline construction. Subsequ…
The Modified Direct Method (MDM) is an iterative mesh smoothing method for smoothing planar and surface meshes, which is developed from the non-iterative smoothing method originated by Balendran [1]. When smooth planar meshes, the performance of the MDM is effectively identical to that of Laplacian smoothing, for triangular and quadrilateral meshes; however, the MDM outperforms Laplacian smoothing for tri-quad meshes. When smooth surface meshes, for trian-gular, quadrilateral and quad-dominant mixed meshes, the mean quality(MQ) of all mesh elements always increases and the mean square error (M…
G-splines are a generalization of B-splines that deals with extraordinary points by imposing G^1 constraints across their spoke edges, thus obtaining a continuous tangent plane throughout the surface. Using the isoparametric concept and the Bubnov-Galerkin method to solve partial differential equations with G-splines results in discretizations with global C^1 continuity in physical space. Extraordinary points (EPs) are required to represent manifold surfaces with arbitrary topological genus. In this work, we allow both interior and boundary EPs and there are no limitations regarding how close …
Standard low-order finite elements, which perform well for problems involving compressible elastic materials, are known to under-perform when nearly incompressible materials are involved, commonly exhibiting the locking phenomenon. Interior penalty (IP) discontinuous Galerkin methods have been shown to circumvent locking when simplicial elements are used. The same IP methods, however, result in locking on meshes of quadrilaterals. The authors have shown in earlier work that under-integration of specified terms in the IP formulation eliminates the locking problem for rectangular elements. Here …

In this paper we study the dimension of bivariate polynomial splines of mixed smoothness on polygonal meshes. Here, "mixed smoothness" refers to the choice of different orders of smoothness across different edges of the mesh. To study the dimension of spaces of such splines, we use tools from Homological Algebra. These tools were first applied to the study of splines by Billera (1988). Using them, estimation of the spline space dimension amounts to the study of the generalized Billera-Schenck-Stillman complex for the spline space. In particular, when the homology in positions one and zero of t…
Given a sequence of finite element spaces which form a de Rham sequence, we will construct a dual representation of these spaces with associated differential operators which connect these spaces such that they also form a de Rham sequence. The matrix which converts primal representations to dual representations -- the Hodge matrix -- is the mass or Gram matrix. It will be shown that a bilinear form of a primal and a dual representation is equal to the vector inner product of the expansion coefficients (degrees of freedom) of both representations. This leads to very sparse system matrices, even…
We introduce new manifold-based splines that are able to exactly reproduce B-splines on unstructured surface meshes. Such splines can be used in isogeometric analysis (IGA) to represent smooth surfaces of arbitrary topology. Since prevalent computer-aided design (CAD) models are composed of tensor-product B-spline patches, any IGA suitable construction should be able to reproduce B-splines. To achieve this goal, we focus on univariate manifold-based constructions that can reproduce B-splines. The manifold-based splines are constructed by smoothly blending together polynomial interpolants defin…

Linear Kinematic Features (LKFs) are found everywhere in the Arctic sea ice cover. They are strongly localized deformations often associated with the formation of leads and pressure ridges. Viscous-plastic sea ice models start to generate LKFs at high spatial grid resolution, typically with a grid spacing below 5 km. Besides grid spacing, other aspects of a numerical implementation, such as discretization details, may affect the number and definition of simulated LKFs. To explore these effects, the solutions of sea ice models with different grid spacings, mesh types, and numerical discretizati…
This paper presents an immersed, isogeometric finite element framework to predict the response of multi-material, multi-physics problems with complex geometries using locally refined discretizations. To circumvent the need to generate conformal meshes, this work uses an eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to discretize the governing equations on non-conforming, embedding meshes. A flexible approach to create truncated hierarchical B-splines discretizations is presented. This approach enables the refinement of each state variable field individually to meet field-specific accuracy requirements…
We present an adaptive refinement algorithm for T-splines on unstructured 2D meshes. While for structured 2D meshes, one can refine elements alternatingly in horizontal and vertical direction, such an approach cannot be generalized directly to unstructured meshes, where no two unique global mesh directions can be assigned. To resolve this issue, we introduce the concept of direction indices, i.e., integers associated to each edge, which are inspired by theory on higher-dimensional structured T-splines. Together with refinement levels of edges, these indices essentially drive the refinement sch…

We propose and analyze optimal additive multilevel solvers for isogeometric discretizations of scalar elliptic problems for locally refined T-meshes. Applying the refinement strategy in Morgenstern and Peterseim (2015, Comput. Aided Geom. Design, 34, 50-66) we can guarantee that the obtained T-meshes have a multilevel structure, and that the associated T-splines are analysis-suitable, for which we can define a dual basis and a stable projector. Taking advantage of the multilevel structure, we develop two BPX preconditioners: the first on the basis of local smoothing only for the functions affe…
