We present locally stabilized, conforming space-time finite element methods for parabolic evolution equations on hexahedral decompositions of the space-time cylinder. Tensor-product decompositions allow for anisotropic a priori error estimates, that are explicit in spatial and temporal meshsizes. Moreover, tensor-product finite elements are suitable for anisotropic adaptive mesh refinement strategies provided that an appropriate a posteriori discretization error estimator is available. We present such anisotropic adaptive strategies together with numerical experiments.
If a finite element mesh contains concave elements, it is said to tangled. Tangled meshes can occur during mesh generation, mesh optimization, and large deformation simulations, and will lead to erroneous results during finite element analysis. Recently, the authors introduced the tangled finite element method (TFEM) to accurately handle tangled 2D concave quadrilateral elements. In this paper, TFEM is extended to 3D hexahedral elements. We demonstrate that TFEM leads to accurate results over tangled hexahedral elements, requiring minimal changes to existing FEM framework.
A mixed finite element method for nearly incompressible elasticity and Stokes equations using primal and dual meshes with quadrilateral and hexahedral grids
Two important classes of three-dimensional elements in computational meshes are hexahedra and tetrahedra. While several efficient methods exist that convert a hexahedral element to a tetrahedral elements, the existing algorithm for tetrahedralization of a hexahedral complex is the marching tetrahedron algorithm which limits pre-selection of face divisions. We generalize a procedure for tetrahedralizing triangular prisms to tetrahedralizing cubes, and combine it with certain heuristics to design an algorithm that can triangulate any hexahedra.
Standard low-order finite elements, which perform well for problems involving compressible elastic materials, are known to under-perform when nearly incompressible materials are involved, commonly exhibiting the locking phenomenon. Interior penalty (IP) discontinuous Galerkin methods have been shown to circumvent locking when simplicial elements are used. The same IP methods, however, result in locking on meshes of quadrilaterals. The authors have shown in earlier work that under-integration of specified terms in the IP formulation eliminates the locking problem for rectangular elements. Here …
The surge of activity in the resolution of fine scale features in the field of earth sciences over the past decade necessitates the development of robust yet simple algorithms that can tackle the various drawbacks of in silico models developed hitherto. One such drawback is that of the restrictive computational cost of finite element method in rendering resolutions to the fine scale features, while at the same time keeping the domain being modeled sufficiently large. We propose the use of the augmented lagrangian method commonly used in the treatment of hanging nodes in contact mechanics in ta…
Given a sequence of finite element spaces which form a de Rham sequence, we will construct a dual representation of these spaces with associated differential operators which connect these spaces such that they also form a de Rham sequence. The matrix which converts primal representations to dual representations -- the Hodge matrix -- is the mass or Gram matrix. It will be shown that a bilinear form of a primal and a dual representation is equal to the vector inner product of the expansion coefficients (degrees of freedom) of both representations. This leads to very sparse system matrices, even…

We consider the widely used continuous $\mathcal{Q}_{k}$-$\mathcal{Q}_{k-1}$ quadrilateral or hexahedral Taylor-Hood elements for the finite element discretization of the Stokes and generalized Stokes systems in two and three spatial dimensions. For the fast solution of the corresponding symmetric, but indefinite system of finite element equations, we propose and analyze matrix-free monolithic geometric multigrid solvers that are based on appropriately scaled Chebyshev-Jacobi smoothers. The analysis is based on results by Schöberl and Zulehner (2003). We present and discuss several numerical r…
We propose V--cycle multigrid methods for vector field problems arising from the lowest order hexahedral Nédélec finite element. Since the conventional scalar smoothing techniques do not work well for the problems, a new type of smoothing method is necessary. We introduce new smoothers based on substructuring with nonoverlapping domain decomposition methods. We provide the convergence analysis and numerical experiments that support our theory.
This work presents, analyzes and tests stabilized space-time finite element methods on fully unstructured simplicial space-time meshes for the numerical solution of space-time tracking parabolic optimal control problems with the standard $L_2$-regularization.
A class of linear parabolic equations are considered. We give a posteriori error estimates in the maximum norm for a method that comprises extrapolation applied to the backward Euler method in time and finite element discretisations in space. We use the idea of elliptic reconstructions and certain bounds for the Green's function of the parabolic operator.
We describe and analyze a finite element numerical scheme for the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel model. The scalar auxiliary variable method is used to retrieve the monotonic decay of the energy associated with the system at the discrete level. This method relies on the interpretation of the Keller-Segel model as a gradient flow. The resulting numerical scheme is efficient and easy to implement. We show the existence of a unique non-negative solution and that a modified discrete energy is obtained due to the use of the SAV method. We also prove the convergence of the discrete solutions to th…
The aim of this work is to show an abstract framework to analyze the numerical approximation by using a finite element method in space and a Backward-Euler scheme in time of a family of degenerate parabolic problems. We deduce sufficient conditions to ensure that the fully-discrete problem has a unique solution and to prove quasi-optimal error estimates for the approximation. Finally, we show a degenerate parabolic problem which arises from electromagnetic applications and deduce its well-posedness and convergence by using the developed abstract theory, including numerical tests to illustrate …
In this work, an $r$-linearly converging adaptive solver is constructed for parabolic evolution equations in a simultaneous space-time variational formulation. Exploiting the product structure of the space-time cylinder, the family of trial spaces that we consider are given as the spans of wavelets-in-time and (locally refined) finite element spaces-in-space. Numerical results illustrate our theoretical findings.
In this work, we present a novel error analysis for recovering a spatially dependent diffusion coefficient in an elliptic or parabolic problem. It is based on the standard regularized output least-squares formulation with an $H^1(Ω)$ seminorm penalty, and then discretized using the Galerkin finite element method with conforming piecewise linear finite elements for both state and coefficient, and backward Euler in time in the parabolic case. We derive \textit{a priori} weighted $L^2(Ω)$ estimates where the constants depend only on the given problem data for both elliptic and parabolic cases. Fu…
This paper presents a numerical study on multigrid algorithms of $V$-cycle type for problems posed in the Hilbert space $H(\mathbf{curl})$ in three dimensions. The multigrid methods are designed for discrete problems originated from the discretization using the hexahedral Nédélec edge element of the lowest-order. Our suggested methods are associated with smoothers constructed by substructuring based on domain decomposition methods of nonoverlapping type. Numerical experiments to demonstrate the robustness and the effectiveness of the suggested algorithms are also provided.
This article extends the semidiscrete maximal $L^p$-regularity results in [27] to multistep fully discrete finite element methods for parabolic equations with more general diffusion coefficients in $W^{1,d+β}$, where $d$ is the dimension of space and $β>0$. The maximal angles of $R$-boundedness are characterized for the analytic semigroup $e^{zA_h}$ and the resolvent operator $z(z-A_h)^{-1}$, respectively, associated to an elliptic finite element operator $A_h$. Maximal $L^p$-regularity, optimal $\ell^p(L^q)$ error estimate, and $\ell^p(W^{1,q})$ estimate are established for fully discrete fin…
A linearized numerical scheme is proposed to solve the nonlinear time fractional parabolic problems with time delay. The scheme is based on the standard Galerkin finite element method in the spatial direction, the fractional Crank-Nicolson method and extrapolation methods in the temporal direction. A novel discrete fractional Grönwall inequality is established. Thanks to the inequality, the error estimate of fully discrete scheme is obtained. Several numerical examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the fully discrete numerical method.
The spectral element method constructed by the $Q^k$ ($k\geq 2$) continuous finite element method with $(k+1)$-point Gauss-Lobatto quadrature on rectangular meshes is a popular high order scheme for solving wave equations in various applications. It can also be regarded as a finite difference scheme on all Gauss-Lobatto points. We prove that this finite difference scheme is $(k+2)$-order accurate in discrete 2-norm for smooth solutions. The same proof can be extended to the spectral element method solving linear parabolic and Schrödinger equations. The main result also applies to the spectral …
A systematic numerical study on weak Galerkin (WG) finite element method for second order linear parabolic problems is presented by allowing polynomial approximations with various degrees for each local element. Convergence of both semidiscrete and fully discrete WG solutions are established in $L^{\infty}(L^2)$ and $L^{\infty}(H^1)$ norms for a general WG element $({\cal P}_{k}(K),\;{\cal P}_{j}(\partial K),\;\big[{\cal P}_{l}(K)\big]^2)$, where $k\ge 1$, $j\ge 0$ and $l\ge 0$ are arbitrary integers. The fully discrete space-time discretization is based on a first order in time Euler scheme. …
Different variants of the method of weighted residual finite element method are used to get a solution for the parabolic heat equation, which is considered to be the model equation for the steady state Navier-Stokes equations. Results show that the Collocation and the Least-Squares variants are more suitable for first order systems. Results also show that the Galerkin/Least-Squares method is more diffusive than other methods, and hence gives stable solutions for a wide range of Péclet numbers.
We consider spectral mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretizations of the Lamé system of linear elasticity in polyhedral domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In order to resolve possible corner, edge, and corner-edge singularities, anisotropic geometric edge meshes consisting of hexahedral elements are applied. We perform a computational study on the discrete inf-sup stability of these methods, and especially focus on the robustness with respect to the Poisson ratio close to the incompressible limit (i.e. the Stokes system). Furthermore, under certain realistic assumptions (for analytic da…
