In this survey, we will focus on the mean curvature flow theory with sphere theorems, and discuss the recent developments on the convergence theorems for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension inspired by the Yau rigidity theory of submanifolds. Several new differentiable sphere theorems for submanifolds are obtained as consequences of the convergence theorems for the mean curvature flow. It should be emphasized that Theorem 4.1 is an optimal convergence theorem for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension, which implies the first optimal differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds with positive Ricci curvature. Finally, we present a list of unsolved problems in this area.
We show that among the Euclidean submanifolds with codimension two the ones of rank two that are parabolic but nonruled are isometrically rigid. This generalizes the result in [10] that these submanifolds are genuinely rigid. In addition, we give a parametric classifications of all parabolic submanifolds.
In this note, we investigate the well-known Yau rigidity theorem for minimal submanifolds in spheres. Using the parameter method of Yau and the DDVV inequality verified by Lu, Ge and Tang, we prove that if $M$ is an $n$-dimensional oriented compact minimal submanifold in the unit sphere $S^{n+p}(1)$, and if $K_{M}\geq\frac{sgn(p-1)p}{2(p+1)},$ then $M$ is either a totally geodesic sphere, the standard immersion of the product of two spheres, or the Veronese surface in $S^4(1)$. Here $sgn(\cdot)$ is the standard sign function. We also extend the rigidity theorem above to the case where $M$ is a…
A compact approach to the positivity of Brown-York's mass and its relation with the Min-Oo conjecture, Yau's Problem \#100 and rigidity of hypersurfaces
In this paper, for an immersion $f$ of an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ into $(n+d)$-Euclidean space we give a sufficient condition on $f$ so that, in case $d\leq 5$, any immersion $g$ of $M$ into $(n+d+1)$-Euclidean space that induces on $M$ a metric that is conformal to the metric induced by $f$ is locally obtained, in a dense subset of $M$, by a composition of $f$ and a conformal immersion from an open subset of $(n+d)$-Euclidean space into an open subset of $(n+d+1)$-Euclidean space. Our result extends a theorem for hypersurfaces due to M. Dajczer and E. Vergasta. The restriction…
We prove a splitting theorem for complete gradient Ricci soliton with nonnegative curvature and establish a rigidity theorem for codimension one complete shrinking gradient Ricci soliton in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature.
In this paper, we first use the method of Colding and Minicozzi [5] to show that K. Smoczyk's classification theorem [16] for complete self-shrinkers in higher codimension also holds under a weaker condition. Then as an application, we give some rigidity results for self-shrinkers in arbitrary codimension.
New rigidity results for complete non-compact spacelike submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in plane fronted waves are obtained. Under appropriate assumptions, we prove that a complete spacelike submanifold in these spacetimes is contained in a characteristic lightlike hypersurface. Moreover, for a complete codimension two extremal submanifold in a plane fronted wave we show sufficient conditions to guarantee that it is a (totally geodesic) wavefront.
We consider isometric immersions of complete connected Riemannian manifolds into space forms of nonzero constant curvature. We prove that if such an immersion is compact and has semi-definite second fundamental form, then it is an embedding with codimension one, its image bounds a convex set, and it is rigid. This result generalizes previous ones by M. do Carmo and E. Lima, as well as by M. do Carmo and F. Warner. It also settles affirmatively a conjecture by do Carmo and Warner. We establish a similar result for complete isometric immersions satisfying a stronger condition on the second funda…
We derive curvature estimates for minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space for arbitrary dimension and codimension via Gauss map. Thus, Schoen-Simon-Yau's results and Ecker-Huisken's results are generalized to higher codimension. In this way we improve Hildebrandt-Jost-Widman's result for the Bernstein type theorem.
Motivated by the limiting behavior of an explicit class of compact ancient curve shortening flows, we prove codimension bounds for ancient mean curvature flows by their tangent flow at $-\infty$, generalizing a theorem for cylinders in [CM19b]. In the case of the $m$-covered circle, we apply this bound to prove a strong rigidity theorem. Furthermore, we extend this paradigm by showing that under the assumption of sufficiently rapid convergence, a compact ancient mean curvature flow is identical to its tangent flow at $-\infty$.
We show that a real Kähler submanifold in codimension $6$ is essentially a holomorphic submanifold of another real Kähler submanifold in lower codimension if the second fundamental form is not sufficiently degenerated. We also give a shorter proof of this result when the real Kähler submanifold is minimal, using recent results about isometric rigidity.
We consider a generalization of Calabi-Yau structures in the context of $α$-Sasakian manifolds. We study deformations of a special class of Legendrian submanifolds and classify invariant contact Calabi-Yau structures on 5-dimensional nilmanifolds. Finally we generalize to codimension $r$.
In this paper, we first introduce the concept of $ξ$-submanifold which is a natural generalization of self-shrinkers for the mean curvature flow and also an extension of $λ$-hypersurfaces to the higher codimension. Then, as the main result, we prove a rigidity theorem for Lagrangian $ξ$-submanifold in the complex $2$-plane $\bbc^2$.
In [dLMu05], DeLellis and Müller proved a quantitative version of Codazzi's theorem, namely for a smooth embedded surface $\ Σ\subseteq \mathbb{R}^3\ $ with area normalized to $\ {\cal H}^2(Σ) = 4 π $, it was shown that $\ \parallel A_Σ- id \parallel_{L^2(Σ)} \leq C \parallel A^0_Σ\parallel_{L^2(Σ)}\ $, and building on this, closeness of $\ Σ $ to a round sphere in $\ W^{2,2}\ $ was established, when $\ \parallel A^0_Σ\parallel_{L^2(Σ)}\ $ is small. This was supplemented in [dLMu06] by giving a conformal parametrization $\ S^2 \stackrel{\approx}{\longrightarrow} Σ $ with small conformal factor…
Using a hyperKähler rotation on complex structures of a Calabi-Yau 2-fold and rolling of an isotropic 2-submanifold in a symplectic 6-manifold, we construct, by gluing, a natural family of immersed Lagrangian deformations of a branched covering of a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold and study how they deviate from being deformable to a family of special Lagrangian deformations by examining in detail Joyce's criteria on this family. The result suggests a potential image-support rigidity of A-branes that wrap around a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which res…
We show that the product of two round shrinking spheres is an isolated self-shrinker in any codimension, modulo rotations. Moreover we prove explicit Łojasiewicz inequalities near such products. Łojasiewicz inequalities were previously used by Schulze to prove uniqueness of tangent mean curvature flows at compact shrinkers; our results provide an explicit rate of convergence to products of two spheres.
Inspired by the work of Chen-Zhang \cite{Chen-Zhang}, we derive an evolution formula for the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy in reference to a static space, introduced by Chen-Wang-Wang-Yau \cite{CWWY}. If the reference static space represents a mass minimizing, static extension of the initial surface $Σ$, we observe that the derivative of the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy is equal to the derivative of the Bartnik quasi-local mass at $Σ$. Combining the evolution formula for the quasi-local energy with a localized Penrose inequality proved in \cite{Lu-Miao}, we prove a rigidity theorem for compact $3…
We study the rigidity results for self-shrinkers in Euclidean space by restriction of the image under the Gauss map. The geometric properties of the target manifolds carry into effect. In the self-shrinking hypersurface situation Theorem 3.1 and Theorem 3.2 not only improve the previous results, but also are optimal. In higher codimensional case, using geometric properties of the Grassmanian manifolds (the target manifolds of the Gauss map) we give a rigidity theorem for self-shrinking graphs.
We extend the concept of genuine rigidity of submanifolds by allowing mild singularities, mainly to obtain new global rigidity results and unify the known ones. As one of the consequences, we simultaneously extend and unify Sacksteder and Dajczer-Gromoll theorems by showing that any compact $n$-dimensional submanifold of ${\mathbb R}^{n+p}$ is singularly genuinely rigid in ${\mathbb R}^{n+q}$, for any $q < \min\{5,n\} - p$. Unexpectedly, the singular theory becomes much simpler and natural than the regular one, even though all technical codimension assumptions, needed in the regular case, are …
We use the weighted Hsiung-Minkowski integral formulas and Brendle's inequality to show new rigidity results. First, we prove Alexandrov type results for closed embedded hypersurfaces with radially symmetric higher order mean curvature in a large class of Riemannian warped product manifolds, including the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spaces, where the Alexandrov reflection principle is not available. Second, we prove that, in Euclidean space, the only closed immersed self-expanding solitons to the weighted generalized inverse curvature flow of codimension one are round hyperspheres.
In their proof of the positive energy theorem, Schoen and Yau showed that every asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface M of a Lorentzian manifold which is flat along M can be isometrically imbedded with its given second fundamental form into Minkowski spacetime as the graph of a function from R^n to R; in particular, M is diffeomorphic to R^n. In this short note, we give an alternative proof of this fact. The argument generalises to the asymptotically hyperbolic case, works in every dimension n, and does not need a spin structure.
In this paper, we investigate the parametric version and non-parametric version of rigidity theorem of spacelike translating solitons in pseudo-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$. Firstly, we classify $m$-dimensional complete spacelike translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$ by affine technique and classical gradient estimates, and prove the only complete spacelike translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}_{n}$ are the spacelike $m$-planes. This result provides another proof of a nonexistence theorem for complete spacelike translating solitons in \cite{C-Q}, and a simple proof of ri…
Using the new diffeomorphism invariants of Seiberg and Witten, a uniqueness theorem is proved for Einstein metrics on compact quotients of irreducible 4-dimensional symmetric spaces of non-compact type. The proof also yields a Riemannian version of the Miyaoka-Yau inequality.
In this paper we study the embedding of Riemannian manifolds in low codimension. The well-known result of Nash and Kuiper says that any short embedding in codimension one can be uniformly approximated by $C^1$ isometric embeddings. This statement clearly cannot be true for $C^2$ embeddings in general, due to the classical rigidity in the Weyl problem. In fact Borisov extended the latter to embeddings of class $C^{1,α}$ with $α>2/3$. On the other hand he announced in that the Nash-Kuiper statement can be extended to local $C^{1,α}$ embeddings with $α<(1+n+n^2)^{-1}$, where $n$ is the dimension …
We prove that complete submanifolds, on which the Omori-Yau weak maximum principle for the Hessian holds, with low codimension and bounded by cylinders of small radius must have points rich in large positive extrinsic curvature. The lower the codimension is, the richer such points are. The smaller the radius is, the larger such curvatures are. This work unifies and generalizes several previous results on submanifolds with nonpositive extrinsic curvature.
We prove long time existence and convergence results for the pluriclosed flow, which imply geometric and topological classification theorems for generalized Kähler structures. Our approach centers on the reduction of pluriclosed flow to a degenerate parabolic equation for a $(1,0)$-form, introduced in \cite{ST2}. We observe a number of differential inequalities satisfied by this system which lead to a priori $L^{\infty}$ estimates for the metric along the flow. Moreover we observe an unexpected connection to "Born-Infeld geometry" which leads to a sharp differential inequality which can be use…
We classify biharmonic submanifolds with certain geometric properties in Euclidean spheres. For codimension 1, we determine the biharmonic hypersurfaces with at most two distinct principal curvatures and the conformally flat biharmonic hypersurfaces. We obtain some rigidity results for pseudo-umbilical biharmonic submanifolds of codimension 2 and for biharmonic surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field. We also study the type, in the sense of B-Y. Chen, of compact proper biharmonic submanifolds with constant mean curvature in spheres.
In this paper, we study self-expanders for mean curvature flows. First we show the discreteness of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian on them. Next we give a universal lower bound of the bottom of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian and prove that this lower bound is achieved if and only if the self-expander is the Euclidian subspace through the origin. Further, for self-expanders of codimension $1$, we prove an inequality between the bottom of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian and the bottom of the spectrum of weighted stability operator and that the hyperplane through the origin is …
Let $Ω$ be a compact and mean-convex domain with smooth boundary $Σ:=\partialΩ$, in an initial data set $(M^3,g,K)$, which has no apparent horizon in its interior. If $Σ$ is spacelike in a spacetime $(\E^4,g\_\E)$ with spacelike mean curvature vector $\mathcal{H}$ such that $Σ$ admits an isometric and isospin immersion into $\mathbb{R}^3$ with mean curvature $H\_0$, then: \begin{eqnarray*} \int\_Σ|\mathcal{H}|dΣ\leq\int\_Σ\frac{H\_0^2}{|\mathcal{H}|}dΣ. \end{eqnarray*} If equality occurs, we prove that there exists a local isometric immersion of $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ (the Minkowski spaceti…
We prove the following comparison theorem for metrics with nonnegative scalar curvature, also known as the dihedral rigidity conjecture by Gromov: for $n\le 7$, if an $n$-dimensional prism has nonnegative scalar curvature and weakly mean convex faces, then its dihedral angle cannot be everywhere not larger than its Euclidean model, unless it is isometric to an Euclidean prism. The proof relies on constructing certain free boundary minimal hypersurface in a Riemannian polyhedron, and extending a dimension descent idea of Schoen-Yau. Our result is a localization of the positive mass theorem.
In this paper we investigate the rigidity of ancient solutions of the mean curvature flow with arbitrary codimension in space forms. We first prove that under certain sharp asymptotic pointwise curvature pinching condition the ancient solution in a sphere is either a shrinking spherical cap or a totally geodesic sphere. Then we show that under certain pointwise curvature pinching condition the ancient solution in a hyperbolic space is a family of shrinking spheres. We also obtain a rigidity result for ancient solutions in a nonnegatively curved space form under an asymptotic integral curvature…
The space of Fredholm operators of fixed index is stratified by submanifolds according to the dimension of the kernel. Geometric considerations often lead to questions about the intersections of concrete families of elliptic operators with these submanifolds: are the intersections non-empty? are they smooth? what are their codimensions? The purpose of this article is to develop tools to address these questions in equivariant situations. An important motivation for this work are transversality questions for multiple covers of $J$-holomorphic maps. As an application, we use our framework to give…
