Let $Ω$ be a compact and mean-convex domain with smooth boundary $Σ:=\partialΩ$, in an initial data set $(M^3,g,K)$, which has no apparent horizon in its interior. If $Σ$ is spacelike in a spacetime $(\E^4,g\_\E)$ with spacelike mean curvature vector $\mathcal{H}$ such that $Σ$ admits an isometric and isospin immersion into $\mathbb{R}^3$ with mean curvature $H\_0$, then:
\begin{eqnarray*}
\int\_Σ|\mathcal{H}|dΣ\leq\int\_Σ\frac{H\_0^2}{|\mathcal{H}|}dΣ.
\end{eqnarray*}
If equality occurs, we prove that there exists a local isometric immersion of $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ (the Minkowski spacetime) with second fundamental form given by $K$. In Theorem liu-yau-minkowski, we also examine, under weaker conditions, the case where the spacetime is the $(n+2)$-dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1,1}$ and establish a stronger rigidity result.
We discuss some geometric problems related to the definitions of quasilocal mass proposed by Brown-York \cite{BYmass1} \cite{BYmass2} and Liu-Yau \cite{LY1} \cite{LY2}. Our discussion consists of three parts. In the first part, we propose a new variational problem on compact manifolds with boundary, which is motivated by the study of Brown-York mass. We prove that critical points of this variation problem are exactly static metrics. In the second part, we derive a derivative formula for the Brown-York mass of a smooth family of closed 2 dimensional surfaces evolving in an ambient three dimensi…
In \cite{ly, ly2}, Liu and the second author propose a definition of the quasi-local mass and prove its positivity. This is demonstrated through an inequality which in turn can be interpreted as a total mean curvature comparison theorem for isometric embeddings of a surface of positive Gaussian curvature. The Riemannian version corresponds to an earlier theorem of Shi and Tam \cite{st}. In this article, we generalize such an inequality to the case when the Gaussian curvature of the surface is allowed to be negative. This is done by an isometric embedding into the hyperboloid in the Minkowski s…
In this paper, we derive Li-Yau inequality for unbounded Laplacian on complete weighted graphs with the assumption of the curvature-dimension inequality $CDE'(n,K)$, which can be regarded as a notion of curvature on graphs. Furthermore, we obtain some applications of Li-Yau inequality, including Harnack inequality, heat kernel bounds and Cheng's eigenvalue estimate. These are first kind of results on this direction for unbounded Laplacian on graphs.
We use the isometric embedding of the spatial horizon of fast rotating Kerr black hole in a hyperbolic space to compute the quasi-local mass of the horizon for any value of the spin parameter $j=J/m^2$. The mass is monotonically decreasing from twice the ADM mass at $j=0$ to $1.76569m$ at $j=\sqrt{3}/2$. It then monotonicaly increases to a maximum around $j=0.99907$, and finally decreases to $2.01966m$ for $j=1$ which corresponds to the extreme Kerr black hole.
In this short note, we offer an observation that the Miyaoka-Yau inequality holds for any compact Kähler manifold with nef canonical bundle, i.e. a smooth minimal model. It follows directly from the existence of cscK metrics in a neighborhood of the canonical class which was confirmed both by the work of Dyrefelt and Song using different approaches.
We introduce a new version of a curvature-dimension inequality for non-negative curvature. We use this inequality to prove a logarithmic Li-Yau inequality on finite graphs. To formulate this inequality, we introduce a non-linear variant of the calculus of Bakry and Émery. In the case of manifolds, the new calculus and the new curvature-dimension inequality coincide with the common ones. In the case of graphs, they coincide in a limit. In this sense, the new curvature-dimension inequality gives a more general concept of curvature on graphs and on manifolds. We show that Ricci-flat graphs have a…
We introduce a modified non-linear heat equation $\partial_t u = Δu + Γu$ as a substitute of $\log P_t f$ where $P_t$ is the heat semigroup. We prove an exponential decay of $Γu$ under the Bakry Emery curvature condition $CD(K,\infty)$ and prove the Li-Yau inequality $-Δu_t \leq \frac{n}{2t}$ under the Bakry Emery curvature condition $CD(0,n)$. From this, we deduce the volume doubling property which solves a major open problem in discrete Ricci curvature. As an application, we show that there exist no expander graphs satisfying $CD(0,n)$.
In this paper, we generalize the Cao-Yau's gradient estimate for the sum of squares of vector fields up to higher step under assumption of the generalized curvature-dimension inequality. With its applications, by deriving a curvature-dimension inequality, we are able to obtain the Li-Yau gradient estimate for the CR heat equation in a closed pseudohermitian manifold of nonvanishing torsion tensors. As consequences, we obtain the Harnack inequality and upper bound estimate for the CR heat kernel.
On a compact Kähler manifold, we introduce a notion of almost nonpositivity for the holomorphic sectional curvature, which by definition is weaker than the existence of a Kähler metric with semi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature. We prove that a compact Kähler manifold of almost nonpositive holomorphic sectional curvature has a nef canonical line bundle, contains no rational curves and satisfies some Miyaoka-Yau type inequalities. In the course of the discussions, we attach a real value to any fixed Kähler class which, up to a constant factor depending only on the dimension of manifold,…
We give a proof to the Li-Yau-Hamilton type inequality claimed by Perelman on the fundamental solution to the conjugate heat equation. The rest of the paper is devoted to improving the known differential inequalities of Li-Yau-Hamilton type via monotonicity formulae.
In this note, We proved that a compact Sasakian manifold $( M, ξ, η, Φ , g )$ with negative transverse holomorphic sectional curvature must have has a Sasakian structure $( ξ, η , Φ , g )$ with negative transverse Ricci curvature. Similarly, a compact Sasakian manifold with non-positive transverse holomorphic sectional curvature, then the negative first basic Chern class is transverse nef and we have the Miyaoka-Yau type inequality. When transverse holomorphic sectional curvature is quasi-negative, we obtain a Chern number inequality.
In this paper, we prove the Miyaoka-Yau inequality for compact Kähler manifolds with semi-positive canonical bundle. The key point of the proof is the estimate for the $L^2$-norm of the scalar curvature along the Kähler-Ricci flow.
In this paper, we study Li-Yau gradient estimates for the solutions $u$ to the heat equation $\partial_tu=Δu$ on graphs under the curvature condition $CD(n,-K)$ introduced by Bauer et al. in \cite{BHLLMY}. As applications, we derive Harnack inequalities and heat kernel estimates on graphs. Also we present a type of Hamilton gradient estimates.
After establishing suitable notions of stability and Chern classes for singular pairs, we use Kähler-Einstein metrics with conical and cuspidal singularities to prove the slope semistability of orbifold tangent sheaves of minimal log-canonical pairs of log general type. We then proceed to prove the Miyaoka-Yau inequality for all minimal pairs with standard coefficients. Our result in particular provides an alternative proof of the Abundance theorem for threefolds that is independent of positivity results for tangent sheaves.
We prove a global Li-Yau inequality for a general Markov semigroup under a curvature-dimension condition. This inequality is stronger than all classical Li-Yau type inequalities known to us. On a Riemannian manifold, it is equivalent to a new parabolic Harnack inequality, both in negative and positive curvature, giving new subsequents bounds on the heat kernel of the semigroup. Under positive curvature we moreover reach ultracontractive bounds by a direct and robust method.
In a seminal paper published in 1980, P. C. Yang and S.-T. Yau proved an inequality bounding the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on an orientable Riemannian surface in terms of its genus $γ$ and the area. The equality in Yang-Yau's estimate is attained for $γ=0$ by an old result of J. Hersch and it was recently shown by S. Nayatani and T. Shoda that it is also attained for $γ=2$. In the present article we combine techniques from algebraic geometry and minimal surface theory to show that Yang-Yau's inequality is strict for all genera $γ> 2$. Previously this was only known for $γ=1$. In the se…
Let $(X,d,μ)$ be a $RCD^\ast(K, N)$ space with $K\in mathbb{R}$ and $N\in [1,\infty)$. Suppose that $(X,d)$ is connected, complete and separable, and $\supp μ=X$. We prove that the Li-Yau inequality for the heat flow holds true on $(X,d,μ)$ when $K\ge 0$. A Baudoin-Garofalo inequality and Harnack inequalities for the heat flows are established on $(X,d,μ)$ for general $K\in \mathbb{R}$. Large time behaviors of heat kernels are also studied.
Chung-Grigor'yan-Yau's inequality describes upper bounds of eigenvalues of Laplacian in terms of subsets ("input") and their volumes. In this paper we will show that we can reduce "input" in Chung-Grigor'yan-Yau's inequality in the setting of Alexandrov spaces satisfying CD$(0,\infty)$. We will also discuss a related conjecture for some universal inequality among eigenvalues of Laplacian.
We show that harmonic spinors obey a strengthened version of the well-known pointwise Kato inequality for sections of a vector bundle with a connection. We then prove a decay estimate for eigenspinors using this Kato-Yau estimate and resulting differential inequality. We briefly describe some applications to gauge theory---specifically to integral estimates which are used when gluing and ungluing PU(2) monopoles (math.DG/9907107).
We present in this note a lower bound for the Calabi functional in a given Kähler class. This yields an integral inequality for constant scalar curvature metrics, which can be viewed as a refined version of Yau's Chern number inequality.
We prove a generalization of the Li-Yau estimate for a board class of second order linear parabolic equations. As a consequence, we obtain a new Cheeger-Yau inequality and a new Harnack inequality for these equations. We also prove a Hamilton-Li-Yau estimate, which is a matrix version of the Li-Yau estimate, for these equations. This results in a generalization of Huisken's monotonicity formula for a family of evolving hypersurfaces. Finally, we also show that all these generalizations are sharp in the sense that the inequalities become equalities for a family of fundamental solutions, which h…

We establish a one-parameter family of Harnack inequalities connecting the constrained trace Li-Yau differential Harnack inequality for a nonlinear parabolic equation to the constrained trace Chow-Hamilton Harnack inequality for this nonlinear equation with respect to evolving metrics related to Ricci flow on a 2-dimensional closed manifold. This result can be regarded as a nonlinear version of the previous work of Y. Zheng and the author (Arch. Math. 94 (2010), 591-600).

We prove a linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for the Kaehler-Ricci flow. We then use this sharp differential inequality to study the Liouville properties of the plurisubharmonic functions on complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature.
We study an algebraic inequality for nilpotent matrices and show some interesting geometric applications: (i) obtaining topological information for nilpotent polystable Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface; (ii) obtaining a sharp upper bound of the holomorphic sectional curvatures of the period domain and the Hodge metric on the Calabi-Yau moduli.
Since Li and Yau obtained the gradient estimate for the heat equation, related estimates have been extensively studied. With additional curvature assumptions, matrix estimates that generalize such estimates have been discovered for various time-dependent settings, including the heat equation on a Kähler manifold, Ricci flow, Kähler-Ricci flow, and mean curvature flow, to name a few. As an elliptic analogue, Colding proved a sharp gradient estimate for the Green function on a manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. In this paper we prove a related matrix inequality on manifolds with suitable…
Given an SO(3)-bundle with connection, the associated two-sphere bundle carries a natural closed 2-form. Asking that this be symplectic gives a curvature inequality first considered by Reznikov. We study this inequality in the case when the base has dimension four, with three main aims. Firstly, we use this approach to construct symplectic six-manifolds with c_1=0 which are never Kahler; e.g., we produce such manifolds with b_1=0=b_3 and also with c_2.omega <0, answering questions posed by Smith-Thomas-Yau. Examples come from Riemannian geometry, via the Levi-Civita connection on Lambda^+. The…
Using the curvature-dimension inequality proved in Part~I, we look at consequences of this inequality in terms of the interaction between the sub-Riemannian geometry and the heat semigroup $P_t$ corresponding to the sub-Laplacian. We give bounds for the gradient, entropy, a Poincaré inequality and a Li-Yau type inequality. These results require that the gradient of $P_t f$ remains uniformly bounded whenever the gradient of $f$ is bounded and we give several sufficient conditions for this to hold.
Let $(M,g(t))$, $0\le t\le T$, $\partial M\neϕ$, be a compact $n$-dimensional manifold, $n\ge 2$, with metric $g(t)$ evolving by the Ricci flow such that the second fundamental form of $\partial M$ with respect to the unit outward normal of $\partial M$ is uniformly bounded below on $\partial M\times [0,T]$. We will prove a global Li-Yau gradient estimate for the solution of the generalized conjugate heat equation on $M\times [0,T]$. We will give another proof of Perelman's Li-Yau-Hamilton type inequality for the fundamental solution of the conjugate heat equation on closed manifolds without u…
This article is devoted to the study of several estimations for a positive solution to a nonlinear weighted parabolic equation on a weighted Riemannian manifold. We therefore derive new Li-Yau type and Hamilton type gradient estimates yielding several consequences. We also derive Hessian estimate and some corollaries for the same equation. Among the applications of our estimates discussed here are Harnack type inequalities, Liouville type theorems and a local time reversed Harnack inequality.
In this paper, we show that the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metrics is closely related to the properness of corresponding energy functionals. Under the condition that admitting no nontrivial Hamiltonian holomorphic vector field, we prove that the existence of Sasakian-Einstein metric implies a Moser-Trudinger type inequality. At the end of this paper, we also obtain a Miyaoka-Yau type inequality in Sasakian geometry.
In this paper, we prove the Li-Yau type Harnack inequality and Hamilton type dimension free Harnack inequality for the heat equation $\partial_t u=Lu$ associated with the time dependent Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds equipped with a variant of the $(K, m)$-super Perelman Ricci flows and the $K$-super Perelman Ricci flows.
We derive a matrix version of Li \& Yau--type estimates for positive solutions of semilinear heat equations on Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvatures and parallel Ricci tensor, similarly to what R.~Hamilton did in~\cite{hamilton7} for the standard heat equation. We then apply these estimates to obtain some Harnack--type inequalities, which give local bounds on the solutions in terms of the geometric quantities involved.
By studying the heat semigroup, we prove Li-Yau type estimates for bounded and positive solutions of the heat equation on graphs, under the assumption of the curvature-dimension inequality $CDE'(n,0)$, which can be consider as a notion of curvature for graphs. Furthermore, we derive that if a graph has non-negative curvature then it has the volume doubling property, from this we can prove the Gaussian estimate for heat kernel, and then Poincaré inequality and Harnack inequality. As a consequence, we obtain that the dimension of space of harmonic functions on graphs with polynomial growth is fi…
For an admissible class of smooth compact initial data sets with boundary, we prove a comparison theorem between the Wang/Liu-Yau quasi-local mass of the boundary and the Hawking mass of strictly minimizing hulls in the Jang graphs of the domain. Using this, we prove a quasi-local Penrose inequality that involves these quasi-local masses of the boundary and the area of an outermost marginally outer trapped surface (MOTS) in the domain or the area of minimizing minimal surface within the Jang graphs. Moreover, we obtain sufficient conditions for the (non)existence of a MOTS within a domain, in …
The problem of defining correctly geometric objects such as the curvature is a hard one in discrete geometry. In 2009, Ollivier defined a notion of curvature applicable to a wide category of measured metric spaces, in particular to graphs. He named it coarse Ricci curvature because it coincides, up to some given factor, with the classical Ricci curvature, when the space is a smooth manifold. Lin, Lu & Yau, Jost & Liu have used and extended this notion for graphs giving estimates for the curvature and hence the diameter, in terms of the combinatorics. In this paper, we describe a method for com…
In a previous work, the authors introduced a Lin-Lu-Yau type Ricci curvature for directed graphs referring to the formulation of the Chung Laplacian. The aim of this note is to provide a von Renesse-Sturm type characterization of our lower Ricci curvature bound via a gradient estimate for the heat semigroup, and a transportation inequality along the heat flow. As an application, we will conclude a concentration of measure inequality for directed graphs of positive Ricci curvature.
