We investigate asymptotics of the tail distribution of sojourn time $$ \int_0^T \mathbb{I}(X(t)> u)dt, $$ as $u\to\infty$, where $X$ is a centered stationary Gaussian process and $T$ is an independent of $X$ nonnegative random variable. The heaviness of the tail distribution of $T$ impacts the form of the asymptotics, leading to four scenarios: the case of integrable $T$, the case of regularly varying $T$ with index $λ=1$ and index $λ\in(0,1)$ and the case of slowly varying tail distribution of $T$. The derived findings are illustrated by the analysis of the class of fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes.
We study the asymptotics of the stationary sojourn time Z of a "typical customer" in a tandem of single-server queues. It is shown that, in a certain "intermediate" region of light-tailed service time distributions, Z may take a large value mostly due to a large value of a single service time of one of customers. Arguments used in the paper allow us to obtain also an elementary proof of the logarithmic asymptotics for the tail distribution of the stationary sojourn time in the whole class of light-tailed distributions.
We give a method for computing the iterated Laplace transform of the sojourn time in an union of intervals for linear diffusion processes. This random variable comes from a model occurring in biology concerning the clustering of membrane receptors. The way used hinges on solving differential equations. We finally have a look on the particular case of Brownian motion and we provide a representation for the Laplace transform of its local time in a finite set.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic analysis of sojourn times of random fields with continuous sample paths. Under a very general framework we show that there is an interesting relationship between tail asymptotics of sojourn times and that of supremum. Moreover, we establish the uniform double-sum method to derive the tail asymptotics of sojourn times. In the literature, based on the pioneering research of S. Berman the sojourn times have been utilised to derive the tail asymptotics of supremum of Gaussian processes. In this paper we show that the opposite direction is even more fruit…
The asymptotic decay rate of the sojourn time of a customer in the stationary M/G/1 queue under the Foreground Background (FB) service discipline is studied. The FB discipline gives service to those customers that have received the least service so far. We prove that for light-tailed service times the decay rate of the sojourn time is equal to the decay rate of the busy period. It is shown that FB minimises the decay rate in the class of work-conserving disciplines.
We investigate the tail asymptotic behavior of the sojourn time for a large class of centered Gaussian processes $X$, in both continuous- and discrete-time framework. All results obtained here are new for the discrete-time case. In the continuous-time case, we complement the investigations of [1,2] for non-stationary $X$. A by-product of our investigation is a new representation of Pickands constant which is important for Monte-Carlo simulations and yields a sharp lower bound for Pickands constant.
Consider the high-order heat-type equation $\partial u/\partial t=\pm \partial^N u/\partial x^N$ for an integer $N>2$ and introduce the related Markov pseudo-process $(X(t))_{t\ge 0}$. In this paper, we study the sojourn time $T(t)$ in the interval $[0,+\infty)$ up to a fixed time $t$ for this pseudo-process. We provide explicit expressions for the joint distribution of the couple $(T(t),X(t))$.
We consider a single-server GI/GI/1 queueing system with feedback. We assume the service times distribution to be (intermediate) regularly varying. We find the tail asymptotics for a customer's sojourn time in two regimes: the customer arrives in an empty system, and the customer arrives in the system in the stationary regime. In particular, in the case of Poisson input we use the branching processes structure and provide more precise formulae. As auxiliary results, we find the tail asymptotics for the busy period distribution in a single-server queue with an intermediate varying service times…
We derive exact tail asymptotics of sojourn time above the level $u\geq 0$ $$ \mathbb{P}\left(v(u)\int_0^T \mathbb{I}(X(t)-ct>u)d t>x\right), \quad x\geq 0 $$ as $u\to\infty$, where $X$ is a Gaussian process with continuous sample paths, $c>0$, $v(u)$ is a positive function of $u$ and $T\in (0,\infty]$. Additionally, we analyze asymptotic distributional properties of $$τ_u(x):=\inf\left\{t\geq 0: v(u) \int_0^t \mathbb{I}(X(s)-cs>u)d s>x\right\}, $$ as $u\to\infty$, $x\geq 0$, where $\inf\emptyset=\infty$. The findings of this contribution are illustrated by a detailed analysis of a class of Ga…
For a Lévy process on the real line, we provide complete criteria for the finiteness of exponential moments of the first passage time into the interval $(r,\infty)$, the sojourn time in the interval $(-\infty,r]$, and the last exit time from $(-\infty,r]$. Moreover, whenever these quantities are finite, we derive their respective asymptotic behavior as $r \to \infty$.
In this paper we study a class of Quasi-Skipfree (QSF) processes where the transition rate submatrices in the skipfree direction have a column times row structure. Under homogeneity and irreducibility assumptions we show that the stationary distributions of these processes have a product form as a function of the level. For an application, we will discuss the ${\it Cox(k)}/M^Y/1$-queue, that can be modelled as a QSF process on a two-dimensional state space. In addition we study the properties of the stationary distribution and derive monotonicity of the mean number of the customers in the queu…
The location of the unique supremum of a stationary process on an interval does not need to be uniformly distributed over that interval. We describe all possible distributions of the supremum location for a broad class of such stationary processes. We show that, in the strongly mixing case, this distribution does tend to the uniform in a certain sense as the length of the interval increases to infinity.
We construct a pair of related diffusions on a space of interval partitions of the unit interval $[0,1]$ that are stationary with the Poisson-Dirichlet laws with parameters (1/2,0) and (1/2,1/2) respectively. These are two particular cases of a general construction of such processes obtained by decorating the jumps of a spectrally positive Lévy process with independent squared Bessel excursions. The processes of ranked interval lengths of our partitions are members of a two parameter family of diffusions introduced by Ethier and Kurtz (1981) and Petrov (2009). The latter diffusions are continu…
Let $\{X(t) : t \in [0, \infty) \}$ be a centered stationary Gaussian process. We study the exact asymptotics of $\pr (\sup_{s \in [0,T]} X(t) > u)$, as $u \to \infty$, where $T$ is an independent of \{X(t)\} nonnegative random variable. It appears that the heaviness of $T$ impacts the form of the asymptotics, leading to three scenarios: the case of integrable $T$, the case of $T$ having regularly varying tail distribution with parameter $λ\in(0,1)$ and the case of $T$ having slowly varying tail distribution.
In the context of communication networks, the framework of stochastic event graphs allows a modeling of control mechanisms induced by the communication protocol and an analysis of its performances. We concentrate on the logarithmic tail asymptotics of the stationary response time for a class of networks that admit a representation as (max,plus)-linear systems in a random medium. We are able to derive analytic results when the distribution of the holding times are light-tailed. We show that the lack of independence may lead in dimension bigger than one to non-trivial effects in the asymptotics …
Let $\{X_i(t),t\ge0\}, 1\le i\le n$ be independent centered stationary Gaussian processes with unit variance and almost surely continuous sample paths. For given positive constants $u,T$, define the set of conjunctions $C_{[0,T],u}:=\{t\in [0,T]: \min_{1 \le i \le n} X_i(t) \ge u\}.$ Motivated by some applications in brain mapping and digital communication systems, we obtain exact asymptotic expansion of $ P(C_{[0,T],u} \not=φ)$ as $u\to\infty$. Moreover, we establish the Berman sojourn limit theorem for the random process $\{\min_{1 \le i \le n} X_i(t), t\ge0\}$ and derive the tail asymptotic…
We introduce diffusions on a space of interval partitions of the unit interval that are stationary with the Poisson-Dirichlet laws with parameters $(α,0)$ and $(α,α)$. The construction has two steps. The first is a general construction of interval partition processes obtained previously, by decorating the jumps of a Lévy process with independent excursions. Here, we focus on the second step, which requires explicit transition kernels and what we call pseudo-stationarity. This allows us to study processes obtained from the original construction via scaling and time-change. In a sequel paper, we…
It is, perhaps, surprising that the location of the unique supremum of a stationary process on an interval can fail to be uniformly distributed over that interval. We show that this distribution is absolutely continuous in the interior of the interval and describe very specific conditions the density has to satisfy. We establish universal upper bounds on the density and demonstrate their optimality.
Assuming certain conditions on the spectral measures of centered stationary Gaussian processes on $\mathbb{R}$ (or ${\mathbb{R}}^2$), we show that the probability of the event that their zero count in an interval (resp., nodal length in a square domain) is larger than $n$, where $n$ is much larger than the expected value of the zero count in that interval (resp., nodal length in that square domain), is exponentially small in $n$.
We construct a stationary Markov process corresponding to the evolution of masses and distances of subtrees along the spine from the root to a branch point in a conjectured stationary, continuum random tree-valued diffusion that was proposed by David Aldous. As a corollary this Markov process induces a recurrent extension, with Dirichlet stationary distribution, of a Wright-Fisher diffusion for which zero is an exit boundary of the coordinate processes. This extends previous work of Pal who argued a Wright-Fisher limit for the three-mass process under the conjectured Aldous diffusion until the…
Consider the viscous Burgers equation on a bounded interval with inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Following the variational framework introduced by Bertini-De Sole-Gabrielli-Jona-Lasinio-Landim C, we analyze a Lyapunov functional for such equation which gives the large deviations asymptotics of a stochastic interacting particles model associated to the Burgers equation. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of this energy functional, whose minimizer is given by the unique stationary solution, as the length of the interval diverges. We focus on boundary data corresponding to a standing…
In this paper exact confidence intervals for the Orey index of Gaussian processes are obtained using concentration inequalities for Gaussian quadratic forms and discrete observations of the underlying process. The obtained result is applied to Gaussian processes with the Orey index which not necessarily have stationary increments.
Forman et al. (2020+) constructed $(α,θ)$-interval partition evolutions for $α\in(0,1)$ and $θ\ge 0$, in which the total sums of interval lengths ("total mass") evolve as squared Bessel processes of dimension $2θ$, where $θ\ge 0$ acts as an immigration parameter. These evolutions have pseudo-stationary distributions related to regenerative Poisson--Dirichlet interval partitions. In this paper we study symmetry properties of $(α,θ)$-interval partition evolutions. Furthermore, we introduce a three-parameter family ${\rm SSIP}^{(α)}(θ_1,θ_2)$ of self-similar interval partition evolutions that hav…
Let $f$ be a zero-mean continuous stationary Gaussian process on ${\mathbb R}$ whose spectral measure vanishes in a $δ$-neighborhood of the origin. Then the probability that $f$ stays non-negative on an interval of length $L$ is at most $e^{-cδ^2 L^2}$ with some absolute $c>0$ and the result is sharp without additional assumptions.
We study the probability of a real-valued stationary process to be positive on a large interval $[0,N]$. We show that if in some neighborhood of the origin the spectral measure of the process has density which is bounded away from zero and infinity, then the decay of this probability is bounded between two exponential functions in $N$. This generalizes similar bounds obtained for particular cases, such as a recent result by Artezana, Buckley, Marzo, Olsen.
We present a class of Gauss-Markov processes which can be represented as space-time scaled stationary Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes defined on the real line. We give several explicit examples of the representation for certain Gauss bridge processes. As an application, we derive a formula for the density function of the supremum location of certain standardized Gauss-Markov processes on compact time intervals. We also present some sufficient conditions under which mean centered Gauss-Markov processes take zero at a fixed time with probability one.
We consider the quasi-stationary distribution of the classical Shiryaev diffusion restricted to the interval $[0,A]$ with absorption at a fixed $A>0$. We derive analytically a closed-form formula for the distribution's fractional moment of an {\em arbitrary} given order $s\in\mathbb{R}$; the formula is consistent with that previously found by Polunchenko and Pepelyshev (2018) for the case of $s\in\mathbb{N}$. We also show by virtue of the formula that, if $s<1$, then the $s$-th fractional moment of the quasi-stationary distribution becomes that of the exponential distribution (with mean $1/2$)…
Let $\{X_i(t),t\ge0\}, 1\le i\le n$ be independent copies of a random process $\{X(t), t\ge0\}$. For a given positive constant $u$, define the set of $r$th conjunctions $C_r(u):=\{t\in[0,1]: X_{r:n}(t)>u\}$ with $ X_{r:n}$ the $r$th largest order statistics of $X_i, 1\le i\le n$. In numerical applications such as brain mapping and digital communication systems, of interest is the approximation of $p_r(u)=\mathbb P\{C_r(u)\neqϕ\}$. Instead of stationary processes dealt with by Dȩbicki et al. (2014), we consider in this paper $X$ a self-similar $\mathbb R$-valued process with $P$-continuous samp…
We analyze some properties of maximizing stationary Markov probabilities on the Bernoulli space $[0,1]^\mathbb{N}$, More precisely, we consider ergodic optimization for a continuous potential $A$, where $A: [0,1]^\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}$ which depends only on the two first coordinates. We are interested in finding stationary Markov probabilities $μ_\infty$ on $ [0,1]^\mathbb{N}$ that maximize the value $ \int A d μ,$ among all stationary Markov probabilities $μ$ on $[0,1]^\mathbb{N}$. This problem correspond in Statistical Mechanics to the zero temperature case for the interaction described b…
The stationary measures of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation on an interval have been computed recently. We present a rather direct derivation of this result by taking the weak asymmetry limit of the matrix product ansatz for the asymmetric simple exclusion process. We rely on the matrix product ansatz representation of Enaud and Derrida, which allows to express the steady-state in terms of re-weighted simple random walks. In the continuum limit, its measure becomes a path integral (or re-weighted Brownian motion) of the form encountered in Liouville quantum mechanics, recovering the recent for…
We develop the theory of strong stationary duality for diffusion processes on compact intervals. We analytically derive the generator and boundary behavior of the dual process and recover a central tenet of the classical Markov chain theory in the diffusion setting by linking the separation distance in the primal diffusion to the absorption time in the dual diffusion. We also exhibit our strong stationary dual as the natural limiting process of the strong stationary dual sequence of a well chosen sequence of approximating birth-and-death Markov chains, allowing for simultaneous numerical simul…
We study the Wasserstein distance of order 1 between the empirical distribution and the marginal distribution of stationary $α$-dependent sequences. We prove some moments inequalities of order p for any p $\ge$ 1, and we give some conditions under which the central limit theorem holds. We apply our results to unbounded functions of expanding maps of the interval with a neutral fixed point at zero. The moment inequalities for the Wasserstein distance are similar to the well known von Bahr-Esseen or Rosenthal bounds for partial sums, and seem to be new even in the case of independent and identic…
We consider the genealogical tree of a stationary continuous state branching process with immigration. For a sub-critical stable branching mechanism, we consider the genealogical tree of the extant population at some fixed time and prove that, up to a deterministic time-change, it is distributed as a continuous-time Galton-Watson process with immigration. We obtain similar results for a critical stable branching mechanism when only looking at immigrants arriving in some fixed time-interval. For a general sub-critical branching mechanism, we consider the number of individuals that give descenda…
A particle system with a single locally-conserved field (density) in a bounded interval with different densities maintained at the two endpoints of the interval is under study here. The particles interact in the bulk through a long range potential parametrized by $β\ge 0$ and evolve according to an exclusion rule. It is shown that the empirical particle density under the diffusive scaling solves a quasi-linear integro-differential evolution equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The associated dynamical large deviation principle is proved. Furthermore, for $β$ small enough, it is also de…
Let $\{ζ_{m,k}^{(κ)}(t), t \ge0\}, κ>0$ be random processes defined as the differences of two independent stationary chi-type processes with $m$ and $k$ degrees of freedom. In applications such as physical sciences and engineering dealing with structure reliability, of interest is the approximation of the probability that the random process $ζ_{m,k}^{(κ)}$ stays in some safety region up to a fixed time $T$. In this paper we derive the asymptotics of $\mathbb{P}\{\sup_{t\in[0, T]}ζ_{m,k}^{(κ)}(t)> u\}, {u\to\infty}$ under some assumptions on the covariance structures of the underlying Gaussian …
Intrinsic location functional is a large class of random locations containing locations that one may encounter in many cases, e.g., the location of the path supremum/infimum over a given interval, the first/last hitting time, etc. It has been shown that this notion is very closely related to stationary stochastic processes, and can be used to characterize stationarity. In this paper the author firstly identifies a subclass of intrinsic location functional and proves that this subclass has a deep relationship to stationary increment processes. Then we describe intrinsic location functionals usi…
In this paper we consider the distribution of the location of the path supremum in a fixed interval for self-similar processes with stationary increments. To this end, a point process is constructed and its relation to the distribution of the location of the path supremum is studied. Using this framework, we show that the distribution has a spectral-type representation, in the sense that it is always a mixture of a special group of absolutely continuous distributions, plus point masses on the two boundaries. Bounds on the value and the derivatives of the density function are established. We fu…
The paper considers so-called adaptive estimations of regression, distribution density and spectral density of a Gaussian stationary sequence, asymptotically optimal in order at a growing number of observation on any regular subspace compactly embedded in space $L_2$, and confidence intervals, also adaptive, are constructed on their basis for the estimated functions in an integral norm.
We obtain a simple formula for the stationary measure of the height field evolving according to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation on the interval $[0,L]$ with general Neumann type boundary conditions and any interval size. This is achieved using the recent results of Corwin and Knizel (arXiv:2103.12253) together with Liouville quantum mechanics. Our formula allows to easily determine the stationary measure in various limits: KPZ fixed point on an interval, half-line KPZ equation, KPZ fixed point on a half-line, as well as the Edwards-Wilkinson equation on an interval.
A function $f=f_T$ is called least energy approximation to a function $B$ on the interval $[0,T]$ with penalty $Q$ if it solves the variational problem $$ \int_0^T \left[ f'(t)^2 + Q(f(t)-B(t)) \right] dt \searrow \min. $$ For quadratic penalty the least energy approximation can be found explicitly. If $B$ is a random process with stationary increments, then on large intervals $f_T$ also is close to a process of the same class and the relation between the corresponding spectral measures can be found. We show that in a long run (when $T\to \infty$) the expectation of energy of optimal approxima…
In this paper we derive the moderate deviation principle for stationary sequences of bounded random variables under martingale-type conditions. Applications to functions of $ϕ$-mixing sequences, contracting Markov chains, expanding maps of the interval, and symmetric random walks on the circle are given.
We study the variance of the number of zeroes of a stationary Gaussian process on a long interval. We give a simple asymptotic description under mild mixing conditions. This allows us to characterise minimal and maximal growth. We show that a small (symmetrised) atom in the spectral measure at a special frequency does not affect the asymptotic growth of the variance, while an atom at any other frequency results in maximal growth. Our results allow us to analyse a large number of interesting examples.
Hermite processes are a class of self-similar processes with stationary increments. They often arise in limit theorems under long-range dependence. We derive new representations of Hermite processes with multiple Wiener-Itô integrals, whose integrands involve the local time of intersecting stationary stable regenerative sets. The proof relies on an approximation of regenerative sets and local times based on a scheme of random interval covering.
This work is to popularize the method of computing the distribution of the excursion times for a Gaussian process that involves extended and multivariate Rice's formula. The approach was used in numerical implementations of the high-dimensional integration routine and in earlier work it was shown that the computations are more effective and thus more precise than those based on Rice expansions. The joint distribution of excursion times is related to the distribution of the number of level crossings, a problem that can be attacked via the Rice series expansion, based on the moments of the numbe…
