This paper builds upon the research of Corwin and Knizel who proved the existence of stationary measures for the KPZ equation on an interval and characterized them through a Laplace transform formula. Bryc, Kuznetsov, Wang and Wesolowski found a probabilistic description of the stationary measures in terms of a Doob transform of some Markov kernels; essentially at the same time, another description connecting the stationary measures to the exponential functionals of the Brownian motion appeared in work of Barraquand and Le Doussal.
Our first main result clarifies and proves the equivalence of the two probabilistic description of these stationary measures. We then use the Markovian description to give rigorous proofs of some of the results claimed in Barraquand and Le Doussal. We analyze how the stationary measures of the KPZ equation on finite interval behave at large scale. We investigate which of the limits of the steady states of the KPZ equation obtained recently by G. Barraquand and P. Le Doussal can be represented by Markov processes in spatial variable under an additional restriction on the range of parameters.
We obtain a simple formula for the stationary measure of the height field evolving according to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation on the interval $[0,L]$ with general Neumann type boundary conditions and any interval size. This is achieved using the recent results of Corwin and Knizel (arXiv:2103.12253) together with Liouville quantum mechanics. Our formula allows to easily determine the stationary measure in various limits: KPZ fixed point on an interval, half-line KPZ equation, KPZ fixed point on a half-line, as well as the Edwards-Wilkinson equation on an interval.
We introduce a family of Markov growth processes on discrete height functions defined on the 2-dimensional square lattice. Each height function corresponds to a configuration of the six vertex model on the infinite square lattice. We focus on the stochastic six vertex model corresponding to a particular two-parameter family of weights within the ferroelectric regime. It is believed (and partially proven, see Aggarwal, arXiv:2004.13272) that the stochastic six vertex model displays nontrivial pure (i.e., translation invariant and ergodic) Gibbs states of two types, KPZ and liquid. These phases …
Over the past years our understanding of the scaling properties of the solutions to the one-dimensional KPZ equation has advanced considerably, both theoretically and experimentally. In our contribution we export these insights to the case of coupled KPZ equations in one dimension. We establish equivalence with nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics for multi-component driven stochastic lattice gases. To check the predictions of the theory, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of the two-component AHR model. Its steady state is computed using the matrix product ansatz. Thereby all coefficients appe…
The stationary measures of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation on an interval have been computed recently. We present a rather direct derivation of this result by taking the weak asymmetry limit of the matrix product ansatz for the asymmetric simple exclusion process. We rely on the matrix product ansatz representation of Enaud and Derrida, which allows to express the steady-state in terms of re-weighted simple random walks. In the continuum limit, its measure becomes a path integral (or re-weighted Brownian motion) of the form encountered in Liouville quantum mechanics, recovering the recent for…
We show that the Markov semigroups generated by a large class of singular stochastic PDEs satisfy the strong Feller property. These include for example the KPZ equation and the dynamical $Φ^4_3$ model. As a corollary, we prove that the Brownian bridge measure is the unique invariant measure for the KPZ equation with periodic boundary conditions.
The nonequilibrium steady state of the one-dimensional (1D) Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class is studied in-depth by exact solutions, yet no direct experimental evidence of its characteristic statistical properties has been reported so far. This is arguably because, for an infinitely large system, infinitely long time is needed to reach such a stationary state and also to converge to the predicted universal behavior. Here we circumvent this problem in the experimental system of growing liquid-crystal turbulence, by generating an initial condition that possesses a long-range property…
The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation is a stochastic partial differential equation which is ill-posed because the nonlinearity is marginally defined with respect to the roughness of the forcing noise. However, its Cole-Hopf solution, defined as the logarithm of the solution of the linear stochastic heat equation (SHE) with a multiplicative noise, is a mathematically well-defined object. In fact, Hairer [13] has recently proved that the solution of SHE can actually be derived through the Cole-Hopf transform of the solution of the KPZ equation with a suitable renormalization under periodic bou…
We study ergodic properties of a class of Markov-modulated general birth-death processes under fast regime switching. The first set of results concerns the ergodic properties of the properly scaled joint Markov process with a parameter that is taken large. Under very weak hypotheses, we show that if the averaged process is exponentially ergodic for large values of the parameter, then the same applies to the original joint Markov process. The second set of results concerns steady-state diffusion approximations, under the assumption that the 'averaged' fluid limit exists. Here, we establish conv…
In this paper we study Monte Carlo estimators based on the likelihood ratio approach for steady-state sensitivity. We first extend the result of Glynn and Olvera-Cravioto [doi:doi: 10.1287/stsy.2018.002] to the setting of continuous time Markov chains with a countable state space which include models such as stochastic reaction kinetics and kinetic Monte Carlo lattice system. We show that the variance of the centered likelihood ratio estimators does not grow in time. This result suggests that the centered likelihood ratio estimators should be favored for sensitivity analysis when the mixing ti…
Motivated by queues with many servers, we study Brownian steady-state approximations for continuous time Markov chains (CTMCs). Our approximations are based on diffusion models (rather than a diffusion limit) whose steady-state, we prove, approximates that of the Markov chain with notable precision. Strong approximations provide such "limitless" approximations for process dynamics. Our focus here is on steady-state distributions, and the diffusion model that we propose is tractable relative to strong approximations. Within an asymptotic framework, in which a scale parameter $n$ is taken large,…
This paper uses the generator approach of Stein's method to analyze the gap between steady-state distributions of Markov chains and diffusion processes. Until now, the standard way to invoke Stein's method for this problem was to use the Poisson equation for the diffusion as a starting point. The main technical difficulty with this approach is obtaining bounds on the derivatives of the solution to the Poisson equation, also known as Stein factor bounds. In this paper we propose starting with the discrete Poisson equation of the Markov chain. An important step in our approach is extending the d…
We study the stochastic six vertex model and prove that under weak asymmetry scaling (i.e., when the parameter $Δ\to 1^+$ so as to zoom into the ferroelectric/disordered phase critical point) its height function fluctuations converge to the solution to the KPZ equation. We also prove that the one-dimensional family of stochastic Gibbs states for the symmetric six vertex model converge under the same scaling to the stationary solution to the stochastic Burgers equation. Our proofs rely upon the Markov (self) duality of our model. The starting point is an exact microscopic Hopf-Cole transform fo…
We develop a new algorithm for the estimation of rare event probabilities associated with the steady-state of a Markov stochastic process with continuous state space $\mathbb R^d$ and discrete time steps (i.e. a discrete-time $\mathbb R^d$-valued Markov chain). The algorithm, which we coin Recurrent Multilevel Splitting (RMS), relies on the Markov chain's underlying recurrent structure, in combination with the Multilevel Splitting method. Extensive simulation experiments are performed, including experiments with a nonlinear stochastic model that has some characteristics of complex climate mode…
We seek to infer the parameters of an ergodic Markov process from samples taken independently from the steady state. Our focus is on non-equilibrium processes, where the steady state is not described by the Boltzmann measure, but is generally unknown and hard to compute, which prevents the application of established equilibrium inference methods. We propose a quantity we call propagator likelihood, which takes on the role of the likelihood in equilibrium processes. This propagator likelihood is based on fictitious transitions between those configurations of the system which occur in the sample…
We derive and analyze new diffusion approximations of stationary distributions of Markov chains that are based on second- and higher-order terms in the expansion of the Markov chain generator. Our approximations achieve a higher degree of accuracy compared to diffusion approximations widely used for the past fifty years, while retaining a similar computational complexity. To support our approximations, we present a combination of theoretical and numerical results across three different models. Our approximations are derived recursively through Stein/Poisson equations, and the theoretical resul…
A wide class of ``counting'' problems have been studied in Computer Science. Three typical examples are the estimation of - (i) the permanent of an $n\times n$ 0-1 matrix, (ii) the partition function of certain $n-$ particle Statistical Mechanics systems and (iii) the volume of an $n-$ dimensional convex set. These problems can be reduced to sampling from the steady state distribution of implicitly defined Markov Chains with exponential (in $n$) number of states. The focus of this talk is the proof that such Markov Chains converge to the steady state fast (in time polynomial in $n$). A combina…
Consider the standard stochastic reaction network model where the dynamics is given by a continuous-time Markov chain over a discrete lattice. For such models, estimation of parameter sensitivities is an important problem, but the existing computational approaches to solve this problem usually require time-consuming Monte Carlo simulations of the reaction dynamics. Therefore these simulation-based approaches can only be expected to work over finite time-intervals, while it is often of interest in applications to examine the sensitivity values at the steady-state after the Markov chain has rela…
We provide a general steady-state diffusion approximation result which bounds the Wasserstein distance between the reversible measure $μ$ of a diffusion process and the measure $ν$ of an approximating Markov chain. Our result is obtained thanks to a generalization of a new approach to Stein's method which may be of independent interest. As an application, we study the invariant measure of a random walk on a $k$-nearest neighbors graph, providing a quantitative answer to a problem of interest to the machine learning community.

We consider a discrete-time Markov chain $\boldsymbolΦ$ on a general state-space ${\sf X}$, whose transition probabilities are parameterized by a real-valued vector $\boldsymbolθ$. Under the assumption that $\boldsymbolΦ$ is geometrically ergodic with corresponding stationary distribution $π(\boldsymbolθ)$, we are interested in estimating the gradient $\nabla α(\boldsymbolθ)$ of the steady-state expectation $$α(\boldsymbolθ) = π( \boldsymbolθ) f.$$ To this end, we first give sufficient conditions for the differentiability of $α(\boldsymbolθ)$ and for the calculation of its gradient via a seque…
