In the context of communication networks, the framework of stochastic event graphs allows a modeling of control mechanisms induced by the communication protocol and an analysis of its performances. We concentrate on the logarithmic tail asymptotics of the stationary response time for a class of networks that admit a representation as (max,plus)-linear systems in a random medium. We are able to derive analytic results when the distribution of the holding times are light-tailed. We show that the lack of independence may lead in dimension bigger than one to non-trivial effects in the asymptotics of the sojourn time. We also study in detail a simple queueing network with multipath routing.
We derive the sharp non-asymptotical uniform estimations for tails of distributions for classical normed sums of centered normed independent random vectors having a moderate decreasing individual tails of summands.
We study tail behaviour of the distribution of the area under the positive excursion of a random walk which has negative drift and heavy-tailed increments. We determine the asymptotics for tail probabilities for the area.
In this paper, asymptotic behavior of convolution of distributions belonging to two subclasses of distributions with exponential tails are considered, respectively. The precise second-order tail asymptotics of the convolutions are derived under the condition of second-order regular variation.
We consider sums of $n$ i.i.d. random variables with tails close to $\exp\{-x^β\}$ for some $β>1$. Asymptotics developed by Rootzén (1987) and Balkema, Klüppelberg & Resnick (1993) are discussed from the point of view of tails rather of densities, using a somewhat different angle, and supplemented with bounds, results on a random number $N$ of terms, and simulation algorithms.
In this paper, we obtain a refined non-asymptotic tail bound for the largest singular value (the soft edge) of sub-Gaussian matrix. As an application, we use the obtained theorem to compute the tail bound of the Gaussian Toeplitz matrix.
We compute the tail asymptotics of the product of a beta random variable and a generalized gamma random variable which are independent and have general parameters. A special case of these asymptotics were proved and used in a recent work of Bubeck, Mossel, and Rácz in order to determine the tail asymptotics of the maximum degree of the preferential attachment tree. The proof presented here is simpler and highlights why these asymptotics hold.
In this paper, we investigate exact tail asymptotics for the stationary distribution of a fluid model driven by the $M/M/c$ queue, which is a two-dimensional queueing system with a discrete phase and a continuous level. We extend the kernel method to study tail asymptotics of its stationary distribution, and a total of three types of exact tail asymptotics is identified from our study and reported in the paper.
This paper studies the tail probability of weighted sums of the form $\sum_{i=1}^n c_i X_i$, where random variables $X_i$'s are either independent or pairwise quasi-asymptotical independent with heavy tails. Using $h$-insensitive function, the uniform asymptotic equivalence of the tail probabilities of $\sum_{i=1}^n c_iX_i$, $\max_{1\le k\le n}\sum_{i=1}^k c_iX_i$ and $\sum_{i=1}^n c_iX_i^+$ is established, where $X_i$'s are independent and follow the long-tailed distribution, and $c_i$'s take value in a broad interval. Some further uniform asymptotic results for the weighted sums of $X_i$'s w…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the tail probability of the number of customers in the steady-state $M/G/1$ retrial queue with Bernoulli schedule, under the assumption that the service time distribution has a regularly varying tail. Detailed tail asymptotic properties are obtained for the (conditional and unconditional) probability of the number of customers in the (priority) queue, orbit and system, respectively.
When an explicit expression for a probability distribution function $F(x)$ can not be found, asymptotic properties of the tail probability function $\bar{F}(x)=1-F(x)$ are very valuable, since they provide approximations or bounds for system performance, and approaches for computing probability distribution. In this paper, we study tail asymptotic properties for the number of the customers in the $M/G/1$ retrial queueing system. For queueing systems, studies on asymptotic tails have mainly concentrated on the first order asymptotic behavior. To best our knowledge, there is no second order tail…
Random deflated risk models have been considered in recent literatures. In this paper, we investigate second-order tail behavior of the deflated risk X=RS under the assumptions of second-order regular variation on the survival functions of the risk R and the deflator S. Our findings are applied to approximation of Value at Risk, estimation of small tail probability under random deflation and tail asymptotics of aggregated deflated risk
We study the tail behavior for the maximum of discrete Gaussian free field on a 2D box with Dirichlet boundary condition after centering by its expectation. We show that it exhibits an exponential decay for the right tail and a double exponential decay for the left tail. In particular, our result implies that the variance of the maximum is of order 1, improving an $o(\log n)$ bound by Chatterjee (2008) and confirming a folklore conjecture. An important ingredient for our proof is a result of Bramson and Zeitouni (2010), who proved the tightness of the centered maximum together with an evaluati…
We obtain the Lifschitz tail asymptotics for the integrated density of states of the subordinate $α-$stable processes on the Sierpiński gasket $\mathcal G,$ evolving among killing Poissonian obstacles. Simultaneously, we derive the large-time asymptotics for the volume of the $α-$stable sausage on the gasket.
As well known, for a supercritical Galton-Watson process $Z_n$ whose offspring distribution has mean $m>1$, the ratio $W_n:=Z_n/m^n$ has a.s. limit, say $W$. We study tail behaviour of the distributions of $W_n$ and $W$ in the case where $Z_1$ has heavy-tailed distribution, that is, $\E e^{λZ_1}=\infty$ for every $λ>0$. We show how different types of distributions of $Z_1$ lead to different asymptotic behaviour of the tail of $W_n$ and $W$. We describe the most likely way how large values of the process occur.
In this paper we derive the tail asymptotics of the product of two dependent Weibull-type risks, which is of interest in various statistical and applied probability problems. Our results extend some recent findings of Schlueter and Fischer (2012) and Bose et al. (2012).
We provide exact large-time equivalents of the density and upper tail distributions of the exponential functional of a subordinator in terms of its Laplace exponents. This improves previous results on the logarithmic asymptotic behaviour of the upper tail. Since the results in their general form remain rather abstract, we study some fairly common situations in details to see how the behavior near 0 of the Lévy measure of the subordinator influences the asymptotics of the density and upper tail distributions. Several examples of applications are then discussed.
This paper studies the light-tailed asymptotics of the stationary tail probability vectors of a Markov chain of M/G/1 type. Almost all related studies have focused on the typical case, where the transition block matrices in the non-boundary levels have a dominant impact on the decay rate of the stationary tail probability vectors and their decay is aperiodic. In this paper, we study not only the typical case but also atypical cases such that the stationary tail probability vectors decay periodically and/or their decay rate is determined by the tail distribution of jump sizes from the boundary …
We obtain asymptotic bounds for the tail distribution of steady-state waiting time in a two server queue where each server processes incoming jobs at a rate equal to the rate of their arrivals (that is, the half-loaded regime). The job sizes are taken to be regularly varying. When the incoming jobs have finite variance, there are basically two types of effects that dominate the tail asymptotics. While the quantitative distinction between these two manifests itself only in the slowly varying components, the two effects arise from qualitatively very different phenomena (arrival of one extremely …
We consider a two dimensional skip-free reflecting random walk on a nonnegative integer quadrant. We are interested in the tail asymptotics of its stationary distribution, provided its existence is assumed. We derive exact tail asymptotics for the stationary probabilities on the coordinate axis. This refines the asymptotic results in the literature, and completely solves the tail asymptotic problem on the stationary marginal distributions in the coordinate and diagonal directions. For this, we use the so-called analytic function method in such a way that either generating functions or moment g…
We derive in this article the asymptotic behavior as well as non-asymptotical estimates of tail of distribution for self-normalized sums of random variables (r.v.) under natural classical norming. We investigate also the case of non-standard random norming function and the tail asymptotic for the maximum distribution for self-normalized statistics. We do not suppose the independence or identical distributionness of considered random variables, but we assume the existence and sufficient smoothness of its density. We show also the exactness of our conditions imposed on the considered random vari…
This is the first of a three paper series in which we present a comprehensive study of the extreme value theory of the scale-inhomogeneous discrete Gaussian free field. This model was introduced by Arguin and Ouimet who computed the first order of the maximum. In this first paper we establish tail estimates for the maximum value, which allow to deduce the log-correction to the order of the maximum and tightness of the centred maximum. Our proofs are based on the second moment method and Gaussian comparison techniques.
Let $X$ be an integrable discrete random variable over $\{0, 1, 2, \ldots\}$ with $\mathbb{P}(X = i + 1) \leq \mathbb{P}(X = i)$ for all $i$. Then for any integer $a \geq 1$, $\mathbb{P}(X \leq a) \leq \mathbb{E}[X] / (2a - 1)$. Let $W$ be an discrete random variable over $\{\ldots, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, \ldots\}$ with finite second moment where the $\mathbb{P}(W = i)$ values are unimodal. Then $\mathbb{P}(|W - \mathbb{E}[W]| \geq a) \leq (\mathbb{V}(W) + 1 / 12) / (2(a - 1 / 2)^2)$.
Let $\{X_1, X_2, ... \}$ be a sequence of dependent heavy-tailed random variables with distributions $F_1, F_2,...$ on $(-\infty,\infty)$, and let $τ$ be a nonnegative integer-valued random variable independent of the sequence $\{X_k, k \ge 1\}$. In this framework, we study the asymptotic behavior of the tail probabilities of the quantities $X_{(n)} = \max_{1\le k \le n} X_k$, $S_n =\sum_{k=1}^n X_k$ and $S_{(n)}=\max_{1\le k\le n} S_k$ for $n>1$, and for those of their randomized versions $X_{(τ)}$, $S_τ$ and $S_{(τ)}$. We also consider applications of the results obtained to some commonly-us…
We consider a Markov modulated fluid network with a finite number of stations. We are interested in the tail asymptotics behavior of the stationary distribution of its buffer content process. Using two different approaches, we derive upper and lower bounds for the stationary tail decay rate in various directions. Both approaches are based on a well-known time-evolution formula of a Markov process, so-called Dynkin's formula, where a key ingredient is a suitable choice of test functions. Those results show how multidimensional tail asymptotics can be studied for the more than two-dimensional ca…
We consider a discrete-time version of the parabolic Anderson model. This may be described as a model for a directed (1+d)-dimensional polymer interacting with a random potential, which is constant in the deterministic direction and i.i.d. in the d orthogonal directions. The potential at each site is a positive random variable with a polynomial tail at infinity. We show that, as the size of the system diverges, the polymer extremity is localized almost surely at one single point which grows ballistically. We give an explicit characterization of the localization point and of the typical paths o…
Consider a random walk $S=(S_n:n\geq 0)$ that is ``perturbed'' by a stationary sequence $(ξ_n:n\geq 0)$ to produce the process $(S_n+ξ_n:n\geq0)$. This paper is concerned with computing the distribution of the all-time maximum $M_{\infty}=\max \{S_k+ξ_k:k\geq0\}$ of perturbed random walk with a negative drift. Such a maximum arises in several different applications settings, including production systems, communications networks and insurance risk. Our main results describe asymptotics for $\mathbb{P}(M_{\infty}>x)$ as $x\to\infty$. The tail asymptotics depend greatly on whether the $ξ_n$'s are…
In this paper, we analyze a multivariate counterpart of the generalized weighted Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic, which is the supremum of weighted locally stationary chi-square process over non-compact interval. The boundedness and the exact tail asymptotic behavior of the statistics are derived. We illustrate our findings by two examples where the statistic is defined by Brownian bridge and fractional Brownian motion respectively.
In this paper, we consider a discrete-time preemptive priority queue with different service rates for two classes of customers, one with high-priority and the other with low-priority. This model corresponds to the classical preemptive priority queueing system with two classes of independent Poisson customers and a single exponential server. Due to the possibility of customers' arriving and departing at the same time in a discrete-time queue, the model considered in this paper is more complicated. In this model, we focus on the characterization of exact tail asymptotics for the joint stationary…
We study the asymptotics of the stationary sojourn time Z of a "typical customer" in a tandem of single-server queues. It is shown that, in a certain "intermediate" region of light-tailed service time distributions, Z may take a large value mostly due to a large value of a single service time of one of customers. Arguments used in the paper allow us to obtain also an elementary proof of the logarithmic asymptotics for the tail distribution of the stationary sojourn time in the whole class of light-tailed distributions.
Let $P$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ in independent Bernoulli random variables which has zero mean and unit variance. The Bonami hypercontractivity bound implies that the probability that $|P| > t$ decays exponentially in $t^{2/d}$. Confirming a conjecture of Keller and Klein, we prove a local version of this bound, providing an upper bound on the difference between the $e^{-r}$ and the $e^{-r-1}$ quantiles of $P$.
The semimartingale reflecting Brownian motion (SRBM) can be a heavy traffic limit for many server queueing networks. Asymptotic properties for stationary probabilities of the SRBM have attracted a lot of attention recently. However, many results are obtained only for the two-dimensional SRBM. There is only little work related to higher dimensional ($\geq 3$) SRBMs. In this paper, we consider a three dimensional SRBM: A three dimensional Brownian-driven tandem queue with intermediate inputs. We are interested in tail asymptotics for stationary distributions. By generalizing the kernel method an…
In this paper, according to a certain criterion, we divide the exponential distribution class into three subclasses. One of them is closely related to the regular-variation-tailed distribution class, so it is called the semi-regular-variation-tailed distribution class. In the class, although all distributions are not convolution equivalent, they still have some good properties. We give the precise tail asymptotic expression of convolution of these distributions, and prove that the new class is closed under convolution. In addition, we do not need to require the corresponding random variables to…
This note is devoted to the study of the maximum of the excursion of a random walk with negative drift and light-tailed increments. More precisely, we determine the local asymptotics of the joint distribution of the length, maximum and the time at which this maximum is achieved. This result allows one to obtain a local central limit theorems for the length of the excursion conditioned on large values of the maximum.
We consider a modulated process S which, conditional on a background process X, has independent increments. Assuming that S drifts to -infinity and that its increments (jumps) are heavy-tailed (in a sense made precise in the paper), we exhibit natural conditions under which the asymptotics of the tail distribution of the overall maximum of S can be computed. We present results in discrete and in continuous time. In particular, in the absence of modulation, the process S in continuous time reduces to a Levy process with heavy-tailed Levy measure. A central point of the paper is that we make ful…
In this paper, the asymptotic behaviour of the distribution tail of the stationary waiting time $W$ in the $GI/GI/2$ FCFS queue is studied. Under subexponential-type assumptions on the service time distribution, bounds and sharp asymptotics are given for the probability ${\bf P}\{W>x\}$. We also get asymptotics for the distribution tail of a stationary two-dimensional workload vector and of a stationary queue length. These asymptotics depend heavily on the traffic load.
In this paper, we consider the $(1,R)$ state-dependent reflecting random walk (RW) on the half line, allowing the size of jumps to the right at maximal $R$ and to the left only 1. We provide an explicit criterion for positive recurrence and the explicit expression of the stationary distribution based on the intrinsic branching structure within the walk. As an application, we obtain the tail asymptotic of the stationary distribution in the "near critical" situation.
We consider a branching random walk on $\mathbb{R}$ with a killing barrier at zero. At criticality, the process becomes eventually extinct, and the total progeny $Z$ is therefore finite. We show that the tail distribution of $Z$ displays a typical behaviour in $(n\ln^2(n))^{-1}$, which confirms the prediction of Addario-Berry and Broutin.
We study the tail asymptotic of the stationary joint queue length distribution for a generalized Jackson network (GJN for short), assuming its stability. For the two station case, this problem has been recently solved in the logarithmic sense for the marginal stationary distributions under the setting that arrival processes and service times are of phase-type. In this paper, we study similar tail asymptotic problems on the stationary distribution, but problems and assumptions are different. First, the asymptotics are studied not only for the marginal distribution but also the stationary probab…
An asymptotic model for extreme behavior of certain Markov chains is the "tail chain". Generally taking the form of a multiplicative random walk, it is useful in deriving extremal characteristics such as point process limits. We place this model in a more general context, formulated in terms of extreme value theory for transition kernels, and extend it by formalizing the distinction between extreme and non-extreme states. We make the link between the update function and transition kernel forms considered in previous work, and we show that the tail chain model leads to a multivariate regular va…
We consider a two dimensional reflecting random walk on the nonnegative integer quadrant. This random walk is assumed to be skip free in the direction to the boundary of the quadrant, but may have unbounded jumps in the opposite direction, which are referred to as upward jumps. We are interested in the tail asymptotic behavior of its stationary distribution, provided it exists. Assuming the upward jump size distributions have light tails, we completely find the rough tail asymptotics of the marginal stationary distributions in all directions. This generalizes the corresponding results for the …
We introduce a large and flexible class of discrete tempered stable distributions, and analyze the domains of attraction for both this class and the related class of positive tempered stable distributions. Our results suggest that these are natural models for sums of independent and identically distributed random variables with tempered heavy tails tails, i.e. tails that appear to be heavy up to a point, but ultimately decay faster.
We prove tail triviality of determinantal point processes $ μ$ on continuous spaces. Tail triviality had been proved for such processes only on discrete spaces, and hence we have generalized the result to continuous spaces. To do this, we construct tree representations, that is, discrete approximations of determinantal point processes enjoying a determinantal structure. There are many interesting examples of determinantal point processes on continuous spaces such as zero points of the hyperbolic Gaussian analytic function with Bergman kernel, and the thermodynamic limit of eigenvalues of Gauss…
Let $\{X(t),t\ge0\}$ be a centered Gaussian process and let $γ$ be a non-negative constant. In this paper we study the asymptotics of $P\{\underset{t\in [0,\mathcal{T}/u^γ]}\sup X(t)>u\}$ as $u\to\infty$, with $\mathcal{T}$ an independent of $X$ non-negative random variable. As an application, we derive the asymptotics of finite-time ruin probability of time-changed fractional Brownian motion risk processes.
We establish a large deviation principle for the empirical spectral measure of a sample covariance matrix with sub-Gaussian entries, which extends Bordenave and Caputo's result for Wigner matrices having the same type of entries [7]. To this aim, we need to establish an asymptotic freeness result for rectangular free convolution, more precisely, we give a bound in the subordination formula for information-plus-noise matrices.
We consider a two-node fluid network with batch arrivals of random size having a heavy-tailed distribution. We are interested in the tail asymptotics for the stationary distribution of a two-dimensional queue-length process. The tail asymptotics have been well studied for two-dimensional reflecting processes where jumps have either a bounded or an unbounded light-tailed distribution. However, presence of heavy tails totally changes the asymptotics. Here we focus on the case of strong stability where both nodes release fluid with sufficiently high speeds to minimise their mutual influence. We s…
Stochastic networks with complex structures are key modelling tools for many important applications. In this paper, we consider a specific type of network: the retrial queueing systems with priority. This type of queueing system is important in various applications, including telecommunication and computer management networks with big data. For this type of system, we propose a detailed stochastic decomposition approach to study its asymptotic behaviour of the tail probability of the number of customers in the steady-state for retrial queues with two types (Type-1 and Type-2) of customers, in …
We provide the exact large-time behavior of the tail distribution of the extinction time of a self-similar fragmentation process with a negative index of self-similarity, improving thus a previous result on the logarithmic asymptotic behavior of this tail. Two factors influence this behavior: the distribution of the largest fragment at the time of a dislocation and the index of self-similarity. As an application we obtain the asymptotic behavior of all moments of the largest fragment and compare it to the behavior of the moments of a tagged fragment, whose decrease is in general significantly …
The dominant pole approximation (DPA) is a classical analytic method to obtain from a generating function asymptotic estimates for its underlying coefficients. We apply DPA to a discrete queue in a critical many-sources regime, in order to obtain tail asymptotics for the stationary queue length. As it turns out, this regime leads to a clustering of the poles of the generating function, which renders the classical DPA useless, since the dominant pole is not sufficiently dominant. To resolve this, we design a new DPA method, which might also find application in other areas of mathematics, like c…
We consider a discrete-time two-dimensional quasi-birth-and-death process (2d-QBD process for short) $\{(\boldsymbol{X}_n,J_n)\}$ on $\mathbb{Z}_+^2\times S_0$, where $\boldsymbol{X}_n=(X_{1,n},X_{2,n})$ is the level state, $J_n$ the phase state (background state) and $S_0$ a finite set, and study asymptotic properties of the stationary tail distribution. The 2d-QBD process is an extension of usual one-dimensional QBD process. By using the matrix analytic method of the queueing theory and the complex analytic method, we obtain the asymptotic decay rate of the stationary tail distribution in an…
In this paper we derive the asymptotic behaviour of the survival function of both random sum and random maximum of log-normal risks. As for the case of finite sum and maximum investigated in Asmussen and Rojas-Nandaypa (2008) also for the more general setup of random sums and random maximum the principle of a single big jump holds. We investigate both the log-normal sequences and some related dependence structures motivated by stationary Gaussian sequences.
In this paper, we consider a two-dimensional sticky Brownian motion. Sticky Brownian motions can be viewed as time-changed semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions, which find applications in many areas including queueing theory and mathematical finance. For example, a sticky Brownian motion can be used to model a storage system.with exceptional services. In this paper, we focus on stationary distributions for sticky Brownian motions. The main results obtained here include tail asymptotic properties in boundary stationary distributions, marginal distributions, and joint distributions. The ke…
In this paper, we propose a kernel method for exact tail asymptotics of a random walk to neighborhoods in the quarter plane. This is a two-dimensional method, which does not require a determination of the unknown generating function(s). Instead, in terms of the asymptotic analysis and a Tauberian-like theorem, we show that the information about the location of the dominant singularity or singularities and the detailed asymptotic property at a dominant singularity is sufficient for the exact tail asymptotic behaviour for the marginal distributions and also for joint probabilities along a coordi…
We consider the sums $S_n=ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_n$ of independent identically distributed random variables. We do not assume that the $ξ$'s have a finite mean. Under subexponential type conditions on distribution of the summands, we find the asymptotics of the probability ${\bf P}\{M>x\}$ as $x\to\infty$, provided that $M=\sup\{S_n,\ n\ge1\}$ is a proper random variable. Special attention is paid to the case of tails which are regularly varying at infinity. We provide some sufficient conditions for the integrated weighted tail distribution to be subexponential. We supplement these conditions by a numbe…
A network belongs to the monotone separable class if its state variables are homogeneous and monotone functions of the epochs of the arrival process. This framework contains several classical queueing network models, including generalized Jackson networks, max-plus networks, polling systems, multiserver queues, and various classes of stochastic Petri nets. We use comparison relationships between networks of this class with i.i.d. driving sequences and the $GI /GI /1/1$ queue to obtain the tail asymptotics of the stationary maximal dater under light-tailed assumptions for service times. The exp…
