In this paper, we prove the $L^\infty\cap L^2$ stability of Prandtl expansions of shear flow type as $\big(U(y/\sqrtν),0\big)$ for the initial perturbation in the Gevrey class, where $U(y)$ is a monotone and concave function and $ν$ is the viscosity coefficient. To this end, we develop the direct resolvent estimate method for the linearized Orr-Sommerfeld operator instead of the Rayleigh-Airy iteration method introduced by Grenier, Guo and Nguyen.
For the three dimensional Prandtl boundary layer equations, we will show that for arbitrary $M$ and sufficiently small $ε$, the lifespan of the Gevrey-2 solution is at least of size $ε^{-M}$ if the initial data lies in suitable Gevrey-2 spaces with size of $ε$.
We consider a Prandtl model derived from MHD in the Prandtl-Hartmann regime that has a damping term due to the effect of the Hartmann boundary layer. A global-in-time well-posedness is obtained in the Gevrey function space with the optimal index $2$. The proof is based on a cancellation mechanism through some auxiliary functions from the study of the Prandtl equation and an observation about the structure of the loss of one order tangential derivatives through twice operations of the Prandtl operator
Motivated by \cite{DG19}, we prove the global existence and large time behavior of small solutions to 2-D Prandtl system for data with Gevrey 2 regularity in the $x$ variable and Sobolev regularity in the $y$ variable. In particular, we extend the global well-posedness result in \cite{PZ5} for 2-D Prandtl system with analytic data to data with optimal Gevery regularity in the sense of \cite{Ger1}.
We study the 2D and 3D Prandtl equations of degenerate hyperbolic type, and establish without any structural assumption the Gevrey well-posedness with Gevrey index $\leq 2$. Compared with the classical parabolic Prandtl equations, the loss of the derivatives, caused by the hyperbolic feature coupled with the degeneracy, can't be overcame by virtue of the classical cancellation mechanism that developed for the parabolic counterpart. Inspired by the abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski theorem and by virtue of the hyperbolic feature, we give in this text a straightforward proof, basing on an elementary $L…
It is well known that the Prandtl boundary layer equation is instable, and the well-posedness in Sobolev space for the Cauchy problem is an open problem. Recently, under the Oleinik's monotonicity assumption for the initial datum, [1] have proved the local well-posedness of Cauchy problem in Sobolev space (see also [21]). In this work, we study the Gevrey smoothing effects of the local solution obtained in [1]. We prove that the Sobolev's class solution belongs to some Gevrey class with respect to tangential variables at any positive time.
We establish the well-posedness in Gevrey function space with optimal class of regularity 2 for the three dimensional Prandtl system without any structural assumption. The proof combines in a novel way a new cancellation in the system with some of the old ideas to overcome the difficulty of the loss of derivatives in the system. This shows that the three dimensional instabilities in the system leading to ill-posedness are not worse than the two dimensional ones.
In the paper, we study the three-dimensional Prandtl equations without any monotonicity condition on the velocity field. We prove that when one tangential component of the velocity field has a single curve of non-degenerate critical points with respect to the normal variable, the system is locally well-posed in the Gevrey function space with Gevrey index in $]1, 2].$ The proof is based on some new observation of cancellation mechanism in the three space dimensional system in addition to those in the two-dimensional setting obtained in [1,7,19,22].
In the paper, we study the Prandtl system with initial data admitting non-degenerate critical points. For any index $σ\in[3/2, 2],$ we obtain the local in time well-posedness in the space of Gevrey class $G^σ$ in the tangential variable and Sobolev class in the normal variable so that the monotonicity condition on the tangential velocity is not needed to overcome the loss of tangential derivative. This answers the open question raised in the paper of D. Gérard-Varet and N. Masmoudi [{\it Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér}. (4) 48 (2015), no. 6, 1273-1325], in which the case $σ=7/4$ is solved.
We investigate the stability of boundary layer solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We consider shear flow solutions of Prandtl type : $$ u^ν(t,x,y) \, = \, \big (U^E(t,y) + U^{BL}(t,\frac{y}{\sqrtν})\,, \, 0 \big )\, , \quad 0<ν\ll 1\,. $$ We show that if $U^{BL}$ is monotonic and concave in $Y = y /\sqrtν$ then $u^ν$ is stable over some time interval $(0,T)$, $T$ independent of $ν$, under perturbations with Gevrey regularity in $x$ and Sobolev regularity in $y$. We improve in this way the classical stability results of Sammartino and Caflisch in analytic c…
In the present paper, we address a physically-meaningful extension of the linearised Prandtl equations around a shear flow. Without any structural assumption, it is well-known that the optimal regularity of Prandtl is given by the class Gevrey 2 along the horizontal direction. The goal of this paper is to overcome this barrier, by dealing with the linearisation of the so-called hyperbolic Prandtl equations in a strip domain. We prove that the local well-posedness around a general shear flow holds true, with solutions that are Gevrey class 3 in the horizontal direction.
In this paper, we justify the limit from the Navier-Stokes system in a thin domain to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes/Prandtl system for the convex initial data with Gevrey 9/8 regualrity in $x$.
We investigate the hydrostatic approximation of a hyperbolic version of Navier-Stokes equations, which is obtained by using Cattaneo type law instead of Fourier law, evolving in a thin strip $\R\times (0,\varepsilon)$. The formal limit of these equations is a hyperbolic Prandtl type equation. We first prove the global existence of solutions to these equations under a uniform smallness assumption on the data in Gevrey $2$ class. Then we justify the limit globally-in-time from the anisotropic hyperbolic Navier-Stokes system to the hyperbolic Prandtl system with such Gevrey $2$ class data. Compar…
We provide an optimal Gevrey stability result for general boundary layer expansions, under a mild concavity condition on the boundary layer profile. Our result generalizes (and even improves in the non strictly concave case) the one obtained in [Gerard-Varet et al, Duke Math. J. 167 (2018)], restricted to expansions of shear flow type.
In this paper, we prove the well-posedness of the linearized Prandtl equation around a non-monotonic shear flow in Gevrey class $2-θ$ for any $θ>0$. This result is almost optimal by the ill-posedness result proved by Gérard-Varet and Dormy, who construct a class of solution with the growth like $e^{\sqrt{k}t}$ for the linearized Prandtl equation around a non-monotonic shear flow.
We show the local in time well-posedness of the Prandtl equation for data with Gevrey $2$ regularity in $x$ and $H^1$ regularity in $y$. The main novelty of our result is that we do not make any assumption on the structure of the initial data: no monotonicity or hypothesis on the critical points. Moreover, our general result is optimal in terms of regularity, in view of the ill-posedness result of [9].
We show the $H^1$ stability of shear flows of Prandtl type: $U^ν= (U_s(y/\sqrtν),0)$, in the steady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, under the natural assumptions that $U_s(Y) > 0$ for $Y > 0$, $U_s(0) = 0$, and $U_s'(0) > 0$. Our result is in sharp contrast with the unsteady ones, in which at most Gevrey stability can be obtained, even under global monotonicity and concavity hypotheses. It provides the first positive answer to the inviscid limit problem in Sobolev regularity for a non-trivial class of steady Navier-Stokes flows with no-slip boundary condition.
In this work, we establish the convergence of 2D, stationary Navier-Stokes flows, $(u^ε, v^ε)$ to the classical Prandtl boundary layer, $(\bar{u}_p, \bar{v}_p)$, posed on the domain $(0, \infty) \times (0, \infty)$: \begin{equation*} \| u^ε - \bar{u}_p \|_{L^\infty_y} \lesssim \sqrtε \langle x \rangle^{- \frac 1 4 + δ}, \qquad \| v^ε - \sqrtε \bar{v}_p \|_{L^\infty_y} \lesssim \sqrtε \langle x \rangle^{- \frac 1 2}. \end{equation*} This validates Prandtl's boundary layer theory \textit{globally} in the $x$-variable for a large class of boundary layers, including the entire one parameter family…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the generalized Keller-Segel system with the cell diffusion being ruled by fractional diffusion: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_{t}u+Λ^αu-\nabla\cdot(u\nabla ψ)=0\quad &\mbox{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^n\times(0,\infty), -Δψ=u\quad &\mbox{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^n\times(0,\infty), u(x,0)=u_0(x), \ \ &\mbox{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^n. \end{cases} \end{equation*} In the case that $1<α\leq 2$, we prove local well-posedness for any initial data and global well-posedness for small initial data in critical Besov spaces $\dot{B}^{-α+\frac{n}{p}}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^{n}…
We show that the solution to the Cauchy problem of the 3D nematic liquid crystal flows, with initial data belongs to a critical Besov space, belongs to a Gevrey class. More precisely, it is proved that for any $(u_{0},d_{0} - \overline{d}_{0}) \in \dot{B}^{\frac{3}{p}-1}_{p,1} (\mathbb{R}^{3}) \times \dot{B}^{\frac{3}{q}}_{q,1} (\mathbb{R}^{3})$ with some suitable conditions imposed on $p, q\in(1,\infty)$, there exists $T^{*}>0$ depending only on initial data, such that the nematic liquid crystal flows admits a unique solution $(u,d)$ on $\mathbb{R}^{3} \times (0,T^{*})$, and satisfies \begin{…
In $1904$, Prandtl introduced his famous boundary layer in order to describe the behavior of solutions of incompressible Navier Stokes equations near a boundary as the viscosity goes to $0$. His Ansatz was that the solution of Navier Stokes equations can be described as a solution of Euler equations, plus a boundary layer corrector, plus a vanishing error term in $L^\infty$ in the inviscid limit. In this paper we prove that, for a class of smooth solutions of Navier Stokes equations, namely for shear layer profiles which are unstable for Rayleigh equations, this Ansatz is false if we consider …
In this three-part monograph, we prove that steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flows posed over the moving boundary, $y = 0$, can be decomposed into Euler and Prandtl flows in the inviscid limit globally in $[1,\infty) \times [0,\infty)$, assuming a sufficiently small velocity mismatch. Sharp decay rates and self-similar asymptotics are extracted for both Prandtl and Eulerian layers. We then develop a functional framework to capture precise decay rates of the remainders, and prove the corresponding embedding theorems by establishing weighted estimates for their higher order tangential deriva…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the Oleinik's solution to the steady Prandtl equation when the outer flow $U(x)=1$. Serrin proved that the Oleinik's solution converges to the famous Blasius solution $\bar u$ in $L^\infty_y$ sense as $x\rightarrow+\infty$. The explicit decay estimates of $u-\bar u$ and its derivatives were proved by Iyer[ARMA 237(2020)] when the initial data is a small localized perturbation of the Blasius profile. In this paper, we prove the explicit decay estimate of $\|u(x,y)-\bar{u}(x,y)\|_{L^\infty_y}$ for general initial data with exponential decay. We also prove the …
We define and study classes of smooth functions which are less regular than Gevrey functions. To that end we introduce two-parameter dependent sequences which do not satisfy Komatsu's condition (M.2)', which implies stability under differential operators within the spaces of ultradifferentiable functions. Our classes therefore have particular behavior under the action of differentiable operators. On a more advanced level, we study microlocal properties and prove that $${\rm WF}_{0,\infty}(P(D)u)\subseteq {\rm WF}_{0,\infty}(u)\subseteq {\rm WF}_{0,\infty}(P(D)u) \cup {\rm Char}(P),$$ where $u$…
As a continuation of \cite{LXY}, the paper aims to justify the high Reynolds numbers limit for the MHD system with Prandtl boundary layer expansion when no-slip boundary condition is imposed on velocity field and perfect conducting boundary condition on magnetic field. Under the assumption that the viscosity and resistivity coefficients are of the same order and the initial tangential magnetic field on the boundary is not degenerate, we justify the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansion and give a $L^\infty$ estimate on the error by multi-scale analysis.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the stability of Prandtl boundary layers in the vanishing viscosity limit: $ν\to 0$. In \cite{Grenier}, one of the authors proved that there exists no asymptotic expansion involving one Prandtl's boundary layer with thickness of order $\sqrtν$, which describes the inviscid limit of Navier-Stokes equations. The instability gives rise to a viscous boundary sublayer whose thickness is of order $ν^{3/4}$. In this paper, we point out how the stability of the classical Prandtl's layer is linked to the stability of this sublayer. In particular, we prove that th…
Let the viscosity $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$ for the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations in the region $0\leq x\leq L$ and $0\leq y<\infty$ with no slip boundary conditions at $y=0$. For $L<<1$, we justify the validity of the steady Prandtl layer expansion for scaled Prandtl layers, including the celebrated Blasius boundary layer. Our uniform estimates in $\varepsilon$ are achieved through a fixed-point scheme: \begin{equation*} [u^{0}, v^0] \overset{\text{DNS}^{-1}}{\longrightarrow }v\overset{\mathcal{L}^{-1}}{ \longrightarrow }[u^{0}, v^0] \label{fixedpoint} \end{equation*} for solving the Na…
This is the first part of a two paper sequence in which we prove the global-in-x stability of the classical Prandtl boundary layer for the 2D, stationary Navier-Stokes equations. In this part, we provide a construction of an approximate Navier-Stokes solution, obtained by a classical Euler- Prandtl asymptotic expansion. We develop here sharp decay estimates on these quantities. Of independent interest, we establish \textit{without} using the classical von-Mise change of coordinates, proofs of global in x regularity of the Prandtl system. The results of this paper are used in the second part of…
We study well-posedness and ill-posedness for Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations describing the large scale ocean and atmosphere dynamics. By using the Littlewood-Paley analysis technique, in particular Chemin-Lerner's localization method, we prove that the Cauchy problem with Prandtl number $P=1$ is locally well-posed in the Fourier-Besov spaces $[\dot{FB}^{2-\frac{3}{p}}_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^3)]^4$ for $1<p\leq\infty,1\leq r<\infty$ and $[\dot{FB}^{-1}_{1,r}(\mathbb{R}^3)]^4$ for $1\leq r\leq 2$, and globally well-posed in these spaces when the initial data $(u_0…
We characterize the well known self-similar Blasius profiles, $[\bar{u}, \bar{v}]$, as downstream attractors to solutions $[u,v]$ to the 2D, stationary Prandtl system. It was established in \cite{Serrin} that $\| u - \bar{u}\|_{L^\infty_y} \rightarrow 0$ as $x \rightarrow \infty$. Our result furthers \cite{Serrin} in the case of localized data near Blasius by establishing convergence in stronger norms and by characterizing the decay rates. Central to our analysis is a "division estimate", in turn based on the introduction of a new quantity, $Ω$, which is globally nonnegative precisely for Blas…
In this paper, we establish the mathematical validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory for a class of nonlinear plane parallel flows of viscous incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow with no-slip boundary condition of velocity and perfectly conducting wall for magnetic fields. The convergence is shown under various Sobolev norms, including the physically important space-time uniform norm $L^\infty(H^1)$. In addition, the similar convergence results are also obtained under the case with uniform magnetic fields. This implies the stabilizing effects of magnetic fields. Besides, the hig…
We prove asymptotic stability of shear flows in a neighborhood of the Couette flow for the 2D Euler equations in the domain $\T\times[0,1]$. More precisely we prove that if we start with a small and smooth perturbation (in a suitable Gevrey space) of the Couette flow, then the velocity field converges strongly to a nearby shear flow. The vorticity, which is initially assumed to be supported in the interior of the channel, will remain supported in the interior of the channel, will be driven to higher frequencies by the linear flow, and will converge weakly to $0$ as $t\to\infty$, modulo the she…
