Given integers $d\ge 3$ and $N\ge 3$. Let $G$ be a finite abelian group acting faithfully and linearly on a smooth hypersurface of degree $d$ in the complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^{N-1}$. Suppose $G\subset PGL(N, \mathbb{C})$ can be lifted to a subgroup of $GL(N,\mathbb{C})$. Suppose moreover that there exists an element $g$ in $G$ such that $G/\langle g\rangle$ has order coprime to $d-1$. Then all possible $G$ are determined (Theorem 4.3). As an application, we derive (Theorem 4.8) all possible orders of linear automorphisms of smooth hypersurfaces for any given $(d,N)$. In particular, we show (Proposition 5.1) that the order of an automorphism of a smooth cubic fourfold is a factor of 21, 30, 32, 33, 36 or 48, and each of those 6 numbers is achieved by a unique (up to isomorphism) cubic fourfold.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective hypersurface of dimension at least three. We show that every automorphism of the Hilbert square $X^{[2]}$ of $X$ is induced by some automorphism of $X$.
We use the specialization homomorphism for the birational automorphism group to study finite order birational automorphisms. For a family of varieties over a DVR, we prove that a birational automorphism of order coprime to the residue characteristic cannot specialize to the identity. As an application, we show that very general $n$-dimensional hypersurfaces of degree $d \geq 5 \lceil (n+3)/6 \rceil$ have no finite order birational automorphisms.
We study the connected component of the automorphism group of a cubic hypersurface over complex numbers. When the cubic hypersurface has nonzero Hessian, this group is usually small. But there are examples with unusually large automorphism groups: the secants of Severi varieties. Can we characterize them by the property of having unusually large automorphism groups? We study this question from the viewpoint of prolongations of the Lie algebras. Our result characterizes the secants of Severi varieties, among cubic hypersurfaces with nonzero Hessian and smooth singular locus, in terms of prolong…
Trinomial hypersurfaces form a natural class of affine algebraic varieties closely connected with varieties admitting a torus action of complexity one. We investigate orbits of the automorphism group on these hypersurfaces. We prove that each nonrigid trinomial variety has finite number of orbits. We investigate singular orbits and this gives us description of all orbits for some classes of flexible trinomial hypersurfaces. Also we obtain a description of orbits for a class of hypersurfaces having a unique variable with power one in the equation.
The Russell cubic is a smooth contractible affine complex threefold which is not isomorphic to affine three-space. In previous articles, we discussed the structure of the automorphism group of this variety. Here we review some consequences of this structure and generalize some results to other hypersurfaces which arise as deformations of Koras-Russell threefolds.
Let $X$ be a smooth hypersurface $X$ of degree $d\geq4$ in a projective space $\mathbb P^{n+1}$. We consider a projection of $X$ from $p\in\mathbb P^{n+1}$ to a plane $H\cong\mathbb P^n$. This projection induces an extension of function fields $\mathbb C(X)/\mathbb C(\mathbb P^n)$. The point $p$ is called a Galois point if the extension is Galois. In this paper, we will give a necessary and sufficient conditions for $X$ to have Galois points by using linear automorphisms.
In this paper we classify three-dimensional singular cubic hypersurfaces with an action of a finite group $G$, which are not $G$-rational, are not $G$-birationally isomorphic to a quadric and have no birational structure of $G$-Mori fiber space with the base of positive dimension. Also we prove the $A_{5}$ -birational superrigidity of the Segre cubic.
In this paper we give an effective criterion as to when a positive integer q is the order of an automorphism of a smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d, for every d>2, n>1, (n,d)\neq (2,4), and \gcd(q,d)=\gcd(q,d-1)=1. This allows us to give a complete criterion in the case where q=p is a prime number. In particular, we show the following result: If X is a smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d admitting an automorphism of prime order p then p<(d-1)^{n+1}; and if p>(d-1)^n then X is isomorphic to the Klein hypersurface, n=2 or n+2 is prime, and p=Φ_{n+2}(1-d) where Φ_{n+2} i…
We prove that every biregular automorphism of the affine algebraic variety ${\mathbb P}^M\setminus S$, $M\geqslant 3$, where $S\subset {\mathbb P}^M$ is a hypersurface of degree $m\geqslant M+1$ with a unique singular point of multiplicity $(m-1)$, resolved by one blow up, is a restriction of some automorphism of the projective space ${\mathbb P}^M$, preserving the hypersurface $S$; in particular, for a general hypersurface $S$ the group $\mathop{\rm Aut} ({\mathbb P}^M\setminus S)$ is trivial.
We study a kind of modification of an affine domain which produces another affine domain. First appeared in passing in the basic paper of O. Zariski (1942), it was further considered by E.D. Davis (1967). The first named author applied its geometric counterpart to construct contractible smooth affine varieties non-isomorphic to Euclidean spaces. Here we provide certain conditions which guarantee preservation of the topology under a modification. As an application, we show that the group of biregular automorphisms of the affine hypersurface $X \subset C^{k+2}$ given by the equation $uv=p(x_1,..…
Koras-Russell threefolds are certain smooth contractible complex hypersurfaces in affine complex four-space which are not algebraically isomorphic to affine three-space. One of the important examples is the cubic Russell threefold, defined by the equation x^2y+z^2+t^3+x=0. In a previous article by A. Dubouloz, P.M. Poloni and the author, the automorphism group of the Russell cubic threefold was studied. It was shown, in particular, that all automorphisms of this hypersurface extend to automorphisms of the ambient space. This has several interesting consequences, including the fact that one can…
In this paper we give an effective criterion as to when a prime number p is the order of an automorphism of a smooth cubic hypersurface of P^{n+1}, for a fixed n > 1. We also provide a computational method to classify all such hypersurfaces that admit an automorphism of prime order p. In particular, we show that p<2^{n+1} and that any such hypersurface admitting an automorphism of order p>2^n is isomorphic to the Klein n-fold. We apply our method to compute exhaustive lists of automorphism of prime order of smooth cubic threefolds and fourfolds. Finally, we provide an application to the moduli…
In this paper we classify all Riemann surfaces having a large abelian group of automorphisms, that is having an abelian group of automorphism of order strictly bigger then $4(g-1)$, where $g$ denotes as usual the genus of the Riemann surface.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over an algebraically closed field. We show that $A$ is the automorphism group scheme of some smooth projective variety if and only if $A$ has only finitely many automorphisms as an algebraic group. This generalizes a result of Lombardo and Maffei for complex abelian varieties.
We characterize simple complex abelian varieties and simple abelian surfaces in terms of primitivity of translation automorphisms. Applying this together with a result due to Diller and Favre, we then classify all primitive birational automorphisms with trivial first dynamical degree of smooth projective surfaces over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic.
In this paper, we develop a new method to classify abelian automorphism groups of hypersurfaces. We use this method to classify (Theorem 4.2) abelian groups that admit a liftable action on a smooth cubic fourfold. A parallel result (Theorem 5.1) is obtained for quartic surfaces.
We give a way to construct group of pseudo-automorphisms of rational varieties of any dimension that fix pointwise the image of a cubic hypersurface of $P^n. These group are free products of involutions, and most of their elements have dynamical degree >1. Moreover, the Picard group of the varieties obtained is not big, if the dimension is at least 3. We also answer a question of E. Bedford on the existence of birational maps of the plane that cannot be lifted to automorphisms of dynamical degree >1, even if we compose them with an automorphism of the plane.
In this article, we focus on a new perspective of automorphisms of complex 2-tori, reviewing previous works from a lattice-theoretic point of view. In particular, we give a classification of families of symplectic and non-symplectic automorphisms of prime order.
We show that on an Abelian variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, the obstruction to lifting an automorphism to an Abelian variety over a field of characteristic zero as a morphism vanishes if and only if it vanishes for lifting it as an autoequivalence. We also compare the deformation space of these two types of deformations.
In this paper, we show that the average size of the automorphism group over $\mathbb{F}_q$ of a smooth degree $d$ hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{n}_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ is equal to $1$ as $d\rightarrow \infty$. We also discuss some consequence of this result for the moduli space of smooth degree $d$ hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$.
From the degree zero part of logarithmic vector fields along an algebraic hypersurface singularity we indentify the maximal multihomogeneity of a defining equation in form of a maximal algebraic torus in the embedded automorphism group. We show that all such maximal tori are conjugate and in one-to-one correspondence to maxmimal tori in the degree zero jet of the embedded automorphism group. The result is motivated by Kyoji Saito's characterization of quasihomogeneity for isolated hypersurface singularities and extends its formal version and a result of Hauser and Mueller.
Given a compact Kähler manifold, the Infinitesimal Torelli problem asks whether the differential of the period map of a Kuranishi family is injective. Unlike the classical Torelli theorem for curves, there is a negative answer for example for hyperelliptic curves of genus greater than $2$. Nevertheless the Infinitesimal Torelli Theorem holds for many other classes of manifolds. We will prove it for smooth hypersurfaces in simple abelian varieties with sufficiently high self-intersection giving an effective bound on a result by Green in this particular case.
We construct one dimensional families of Abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication which also have an automorphism of order three or four. Using Barth's description of the moduli space of (2,4)-polarized Abelian surfaces, we find the Shimura curve parametrizing these Abelian surfaces in a specific case. We explicitly relate these surfaces to the Jacobians of genus two curves studied by Hashimoto and Murabayashi. We also describe a (Humbert) surface in Barth's moduli space which parametrizes Abelian surfaces with real multiplication by Z[\sqrt{2}].
Let $X$ be a smooth hypersurface of dimension $n\geq 1$ and degree $d\geq 3$ in the projective space given as the zero set of a homogeneous form $F$. If $(n,d)\neq (1,3), (2,4)$ it is well known that every automorphism of $X$ extends to an automorphism of the projective space, i.e., $\operatorname{Aut}(X)\subseteq \operatorname{PGL}(n+2,\mathbb{C})$. We say that the automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$ is $F$-liftable if there exists a subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}(n+2,\mathbb{C})$ projecting isomorphically onto $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$ and leaving $F$ invariant. Our main result in this …
An irreducible algebraic variety $X$ is rigid if it admits no nontrivial action of the additive group of the ground field. We prove that the automorphism group $\text{Aut}(X)$ of a rigid affine variety contains a unique maximal torus $\mathbb{T}$. If the grading on the algebra of regular functions $\mathbb{K}[X]$ defined by the action of $\mathbb{T}$ is pointed, the group $\text{Aut}(X)$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{T}$. As an application, we describe the automorphism group of a rigid trinomial affine hypersurface and find all isomorphisms between such hypersurfaces.
Let $A/F$ be an abelian variety over a field. Does there exist a smooth projective $F$-variety $X$, such that $A$ is isomorphic to the automorphism group scheme of $X/F$? We show that the answer is positive, if and only if $A$ has only finitely many automorphisms, over an algebraic closure of $F$. When $F=\mathbb C$, this result is due to Lombardo and Maffei. When $F$ is algebraically closed, it was obtained independently by Blanc and Brion.
The Koras-Russell threefold is the hypersurface X of the complex affine four-space defined by the equation x^2y+z^2+t^3+x=0. It is well-known that X is smooth contractible and rational but that it is not algebraically isomorphic to affine three-space. The main result of this article is to show that there exists another hypersurface Y of the affine four-space, which is isomorphic to X as an abstract variety, but such that there exists no algebraic automorphism of the ambient space which restricts to an isomorphism between X and Y. In other words, the two hypersurfaces are inequivalent. The proo…
The Narasimhan-Nori conjecture asks for a closed formula for the number of non-isomorphic principal polarizations of any given abelian variety. In this paper, we introduce a new algorithm that gives a lower bound on the number of non-isomorphic principal polarizations on any given abelian variety. We show, for example, that the Jacobian of the genus four underlying curve of Schoen's I-WP minimal surface has at least 9 non-isomorphic principal polarizations. We also explore the Jacobians of Klein's quartic, Fermat's quartic, Bring's curve, and more.
We find explicit projective models of a compact Shimura curve and of a (non-compact) surface which are the moduli spaces of principally polarised abelian fourfolds with an automorphism of order five. The surface has a 24-nodal canonical model in IP^4 which is the complete intersection of two S_5-invariant cubics. It is dominated by a Hilbert modular surface and we give a modular interpretation for this. We also determine the L-series of these varieties as well as those of several modular covers of the Shimura curve.
We analyze K3 surfaces admitting an elliptic fibration $E$ and a finite group $G$ of symplectic automorphisms preserving this elliptic fibration. We construct the quotient elliptic fibration $E/G$ comparing its properties to the ones of $E$. We show that if $E$ admits an $n$-torsion section, its quotient by the group of automorphisms induced by this section admits again an $n$-torsion section. Considering automorphisms coming from the base of the fibration, we can describe the Mordell--Weil lattice of a fibration described by Kloosterman. We give the isometries between lattices described by th…
We obtain analogues of classical results on automorphism groups of holomorphic fiber bundles, in the setting of group schemes. Also, we establish a lifting property of the connected automorphism group, for torsors under abelian varieties. These results will be applied to the study of homogeneous bundles over abelian varieties.
We give a characterizaton of smooth ample Hypersurfaces in Abelian Varieties and also describe an irreducible connected component of their moduli space: it consists of the Hypersurfaces of a given polarization type, plus the iterated univariate coverings of normal type (of the same polarization type). The above manifolds yield also a connected component of the open set of Teichmüller space consisting of Kähler complex structures.
We prove that the automorphism groups of simple polarized abelian varieties of odd prime dimension over finite fields are cyclic, and give a complete list of finite groups that can be realized as such automorphism groups.
We use rigid analytic uniformization by Schottky groups to give a bound for the order of the abelian subgroups of the automorphism group of a Mumford curve in terms of its genus.
First we show that any group of automorphisms of null-entropy of a projective hyperkähler manifold $M$ is almost abelian of rank at most $ρ(M) - 2$. We then characterize automorphisms of a K3 surface with null-entropy and those with positive entropy in algebro-geometric terms. We also give an example of a group of automorphisms which is not almost abelian in each dimension.
Let $A$ be an abelian scheme of dimension at least four over a $\mathbb{Z}$-finitely generated integral domain $R$ of characteristic zero, and let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $A$. We prove that the set of smooth hypersurfaces $D$ in $A$ representing $L$ is finite by showing that the moduli stack of such hypersurfaces has only finitely many $R$-points. We accomplish this by using level structures to interpolate finiteness results between this moduli stack and the stack of canonically polarized varieties.
For any given Salem number, we construct an automorphism on a simple abelian variety whose first dynamical degree is the square of the Salem number. Our construction works for both simple abelian varieties with totally indefinite quaternion multiplication and for simple abelian varieties of the second kind. We then give a complete classification of the dynamical degree sequences for abelian varieties of dimension at most four and obtain an ergodic result for sequences of pullbacks of forms.
