An irreducible algebraic variety $X$ is rigid if it admits no nontrivial action of the additive group of the ground field. We prove that the automorphism group $\text{Aut}(X)$ of a rigid affine variety contains a unique maximal torus $\mathbb{T}$. If the grading on the algebra of regular functions $\mathbb{K}[X]$ defined by the action of $\mathbb{T}$ is pointed, the group $\text{Aut}(X)$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{T}$. As an application, we describe the automorphism group of a rigid trinomial affine hypersurface and find all isomorphisms between such hypersurfaces.
We construct explicitly a family of proper subgroups of the tame automorphism group of affine three-space (in any characteristic) which are generated by the affine subgroup and a non-affine tame automorphism. One important corollary is the titular result that settles negatively the open question (in characteristic zero) of whether the affine subgroup is a maximal subgroup of the tame automorphism group. We also prove that all groups of this family have the structure of an amalgamated free product of the affine group and a finite group over their intersection.
We provide explicit families of tame automorphisms of the complex affine three-space which degenerate to wild automorphisms. This shows that the tame subgroup of the group of polynomial automorphisms of $\C^3$ is not closed, when the latter is seen as an infinite dimensional algebraic group.tomorphism group of affine three-space
In this paper we show that an affine space is determined by the abstract group structure of its group of regular automorphisms in the category of connected affine varieties. To prove this we study commutative subgroups of the group of automorphisms of affine varieties.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show that if the automorphisms group of a quasi-affine variety X is infinite, then X is uniruled.
We prove the existence of wild automorphisms on an affine quadric threefold. The method we use is an adaptation of the one used by Shestakov and Umirbaev to prove the existence of wild automorphisms on the affine three dimensional space.
This paper is dedicated to the problem of infinite transitivity for algebraically generated automorphism groups of the affine plane. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition of infinite transitivity for a large family of subgroups generated by one-parameter additive groups.
We show that every automorphism of the group $\mathcal{G}_n:= \textrm{Aut}(\mathbb{A}^n)$ of polynomial automorphisms of complex affine $n$-space $\mathbb{A}^n=\mathbb{C}^n$ is inner up to field automorphisms when restricted to the subgroup $T \mathcal{G}_n$ of tame automorphisms. This generalizes a result of \textsc{Julie Deserti} who proved this in dimension $n=2$ where all automorphisms are tame: $T \mathcal{G}_2 = \mathcal{G}_2$.
In this paper we prove criteria for a nonnormal toric variety to be flexible, to be rigid and to be almost rigid. For rigid and almost rigid toric varieties we describe the automorphism group explicitly.
We describe a family of rational affine surfaces S with huge groups of automorphisms in the following sense: the normal subgroup of Aut(S) generated by all its algebraic subgroups is not generated by any countable family of such subgroups, and the quotient of Aut(S) by this subgroup contains a free group over an uncountable set of generators.
We associate to each automorphism of the plane, a geometric construction with some properties, it is the {\it{canonical resolution}}. We study the geometry of the canonical resolution, we deduce from it an upper bound for a geometric invariant (the ample index) linked to an automorphism of the affine plane and we link the structure of the effective cone of the surface we get to values of another geometric invariant (the effective index).
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group. In this note we prove that for a quasi-affine $G$-spherical variety the weight monoid is determined by the weights of its non-trivial $\mathbb{G}_a$-actions that are homogeneous with respect to a Borel subgroup of $G$. As an application we get that a smooth affine $G$-spherical variety that is non-isomorphic to a torus is determined by its automorphism group inside the category of smooth affine irreducible varieties.
We prove that every biregular automorphism of the affine algebraic variety ${\mathbb P}^M\setminus S$, $M\geqslant 3$, where $S\subset {\mathbb P}^M$ is a hypersurface of degree $m\geqslant M+1$ with a unique singular point of multiplicity $(m-1)$, resolved by one blow up, is a restriction of some automorphism of the projective space ${\mathbb P}^M$, preserving the hypersurface $S$; in particular, for a general hypersurface $S$ the group $\mathop{\rm Aut} ({\mathbb P}^M\setminus S)$ is trivial.
In this paper we prove that if two normal affine surfaces $S$ and $S'$ have isomorphic automorphism groups, then every connected algebraic group acting regularly and faithfully on $S$ acts also regularly and faithfully on $S'$. Moreover, if $S$ is non-toric, we show that the dynamical type of a 1-torus action is preserved in presence of an additive group action. We also show that complex affine toric surfaces are determined by the abstract group structure of their regular automorphism groups in the category of complex normal affine surfaces using properties of the Cremona group. As a generaliz…
In the group of polynomial automorphisms of the plane, the conjugacy class of an element is closed if and only if the element is diagonalisable. In this article, we show that this does not hold for the group of special automorphisms, giving then a first step towards the direction of showing that this group is not simple, as an infinite-dimensional algebraic group.
Let X be an affine toric variety. The total coordinates on X provide a canonical presentation of X as a quotient of a vector space by a linear action of a quasitorus. We prove that the orbits of the connected component of the automorphism group Aut(X) on X coincide with the Luna strata defined by the canonical quotient presentation.
We study a kind of modification of an affine domain which produces another affine domain. First appeared in passing in the basic paper of O. Zariski (1942), it was further considered by E.D. Davis (1967). The first named author applied its geometric counterpart to construct contractible smooth affine varieties non-isomorphic to Euclidean spaces. Here we provide certain conditions which guarantee preservation of the topology under a modification. As an application, we show that the group of biregular automorphisms of the affine hypersurface $X \subset C^{k+2}$ given by the equation $uv=p(x_1,..…
We show that every Lie algebra automorphisms of the vector fields $Vec(A^n)$ of affine n-space $A^n$, of the vector fields $Vec^c(A^n)$ with constant divergence, and of the vector fields $Vec^0(A^n)$ with divergence zero is induced by an automorphism of $A^n$. This generalizes results of the second author obtained in dimension 2. The case of $Vec(A^n)$ is due to Vladimir Bavula. As an immediate consequence, we get the following result which due to Viktor Kulikov. If every injective endomorphism of the simple Lie algebra $Vec(A^n)$ is an automorphism, then the Jacobian Conjecture holds in dimen…
We study a wide class of affine varieties, which we call affine Fano varieties. By analogy with birationally super-rigid Fano varieties, we define super-rigidity for affine Fano varieties, and provide many examples and non-examples of super-rigid affine Fano varieties.
We study the possible dynamical degrees of automorphisms of the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$. In dimension $n=3$, we determine all dynamical degrees arising from the composition of an affine automorphism with a triangular one. This generalises the easier case of shift-like automorphisms which can be studied in any dimension. We also prove that each weak Perron number is the dynamical degree of an affine-triangular automorphism of the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ for some $n$, and we give the best possible $n$ for quadratic integers, which is either $3$ or $4$.
We prove that, in characteristic zero, closed subgroups of the polynomial automorphisms group containing the affine group contain the whole tame group.
We describe the conjugacy classes of affine automorphisms in the group $Aut(n,\K)$ (respectively $Bir(\K^n)$) of automorphisms (respectively of birational maps) of $\K^n$. From this we deduce also the classification of conjugacy classes of automorphisms of $\Pn$ in the Cremona group $Bir(\K^n)$.
Let (S, B) be the log pair associated with a projective completion of a smooth quasi-projective surface V . Under the assumption that the boundary B is irreducible, we obtain an algorithm to factorize any automorphism of V into a sequence of simple birational links. This factorization lies in the framework of the log Mori theory, with the property that all the blow-ups and contractions involved in the process occur on the boundary. When the completion S is smooth, we obtain a description of the automorphisms of V which is reminiscent of a presentation by generators and relations except that th…
In 2006, Kawaguchi proved a lower bound for height of h(f(P)) when f is a regular affine automorphism of A^2, and he conjectured that a similar estimate is also true for regular affine automorphisms of A^n for n>2. In this paper we prove Kawaguchi's conjecture. This implies that Kawaguchi's theory of canonical heights for regular affine automorphisms of projective space is true in all dimensions.
In this paper we classify all potentially G-birationally rigid del Pezzo threefolds of degree 4 and their automorphism groups and prove the G-birational rigidity of one of them
We construct a smooth rational affine surface S with finite automorphism group but with the property that the group of automorphisms of the cylinder SxA^2 acts infinitely transitively on the complement of a closed subset of codimension at least two. Such a surface S is in particular rigid but not stably rigid with respect to the Makar-Limanov invariant.
We construct families of smooth affine surfaces with pairwise non isomorphic A 1-cylinders but whose A 2-cylinders are all isomorphic. These arise as complements of cuspidal hyperplane sections of smooth projective cubic surfaces.
I extend the framework of rigid analytic geometry to the setting of algebraic geometry relative to monoids, and study the associated notions of separated, proper, and overconvergent morphisms. The category of affine manifolds embeds as a subcategory defined by simple algebraic (normal) and topological (overconvergent) criteria. The affine manifold of a rigid space can be recovered either as a set of `Novikov field' points or as a universal Hausdorff quotient. After base change to any topological field, one obtains a `toric' analytic space that fibres over the affine manifold.
Due to Rentschler, Miyanishi and Kojima, the invariant ring for a ${\bf G}_a$-action on the affine plane over an arbitrary field is generated by one coordinate. In this note, we give a new short proof for this result using the automorphism theorem of Jung and van der Kulk.
We study the Cox realization of an affine variety, i.e., a canonical representation of a normal affine variety with finitely generated divisor class group as a quotient of a factorially graded affine variety by an action of the Neron-Severi quasitorus. The realization is described explicitly for the quotient space of a linear action of a finite group. A universal property of this realization is proved, and some results on the divisor theory of an abstract semigroup emerging in this context are given. We show that each automorphism of an affine variety can be lifted to an automorphism of the Co…
Let $K$ be a complete non-trivially valued non-Archimedean field. Given an algebraic group over $K$ on which every regular function is constant, any rigid analytic function is shown to be constant too. It follows that an algebraic group over $K$ is affine if and only if the associated $K$-analytic space is Stein; that is, rigid analytic embeddings of it in an affine space may always be chosen to be given by algebraic functions. Arguably curiously, the corresponding statement over the complex numbers is false.
The Russell cubic is a smooth contractible affine complex threefold which is not isomorphic to affine three-space. In previous articles, we discussed the structure of the automorphism group of this variety. Here we review some consequences of this structure and generalize some results to other hypersurfaces which arise as deformations of Koras-Russell threefolds.
In 2013 Bazhov proved a criterium for two points on a complete toric variety to lie in the same orbit of the neutral component of automorphism group. This criterium is in terms of divisor class group. Arzhantsev-Bazhov (2013) obtained a similar criterium for affine toric varieties. We prove a necessary condition similar this criteria to the cases of affine and projective horospherical varieties.
We determine the automorphism group for a large class of affine quadric hypersurfaces over a field, viewed as affine algebraic varieties. In particular, we find that the group of real polynomial automorphisms of the n-sphere is just the orthogonal group O(n+1) whenever n is a power of 2. It is not known whether the same is true for arbitrary n. The proof uses Karpenko's theorem that certain projective quadrics over a field are not ruled. That is, they are not birational over the given field to the product of any variety with the projective line. We also formulate a general result on automorphi…
