A semi-proper orientation of a given graph $G$, denoted by $(D,w)$, is an orientation $D$ with a weight function $w: A(D)\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_+$, such that the in-weight of any adjacent vertices are distinct, where the in-weight of $v$ in $D$, denoted by $w^-_D(v)$, is the sum of the weights of arcs towards $v$. The semi-proper orientation number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\overrightarrowχ_s(G)$, is the minimum of maximum in-weight of $v$ in $D$ over all semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ of $G$. This parameter was first introduced by Dehghan (2019). When the weights of all edges eqaul to one, this parameter is equal to the proper orientation number of $G$. The optimal semi-proper orientation is a semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ such that $\max_{v\in V(G)}w_D^-(v)=\overrightarrowχ_s(G)$.
Araújo et al. (2016) showed that $\overrightarrowχ(G)\le 7$ for every cactus $G$ and the bound is tight. We prove that for every cactus $G$, $\overrightarrowχ_s(G) \le 3$ and the bound is tight. Araújo et al. (2015) asked whether there is a constant $c$ such that $\overrightarrowχ(G)\le c$ for all outerplanar graphs $G.$ While this problem remains open, we consider it in the weighted case. We prove that for every outerplanar graph $G,$ $\overrightarrowχ_s(G)\le 4$ and the bound is tight.
An orientation of $G$ is a digraph obtained from $G$ by replacing each edge by exactly one of two possible arcs with the same endpoints. We call an orientation \emph{proper} if neighbouring vertices have different in-degrees. The proper orientation number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\vecχ(G)$, is the minimum maximum in-degree of a proper orientation of G. Araujo et al. (Theor. Comput. Sci. 639 (2016) 14--25) asked whether there is a constant $c$ such that $\vecχ(G)\leq c$ for every outerplanar graph $G$ and showed that $\vecχ(G)\leq 7$ for every cactus $G.$ We prove that $\vecχ(G)\leq 3$ if $G…
A graph $G$ is said to be $1$-perfectly orientable if it has an orientation such that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$, the out-neighborhood of $v$ in $D$ is a clique in $G$. In $1982$, Skrien posed the problem of characterizing the class of $1$-perfectly orientable graphs. This graph class forms a common generalization of the classes of chordal and circular arc graphs; however, while polynomially recognizable via a reduction to $2$-SAT, no structural characterization of this intriguing class of graphs is known. Based on a reduction of the study of $1$-perfectly orientable graphs to the biconnecte…
We determine the exact and asymptotic number of unlabeled outerplanar graphs. The exact number g_n of unlabeled outerplanar graphs on n vertices can be computed in polynomial time, and g_n is asymptotically $g n^{-5/2}ρ^{-n}$, where $g\approx0.00909941$ and $ρ^{-1}\approx7.50360$ can be approximated. Using our enumerative results we investigate several statistical properties of random unlabeled outerplanar graphs on n vertices, for instance concerning connectedness, chromatic number, and the number of edges. To obtain the results we combine classical cycle index enumeration with recent results…
A star edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring of $G$ without bichromatic paths or cycles of length four. The it star chromatic index, $χ_{st}^{'} (G ),$ of $G$ is the minimum number $k$ for which $G$ has a star edge coloring by $k$ colors. In \cite{LB}, L. Bezegov$\acute{a}$ et al. conjectured that $χ_{st}^{'} (G )\leq \lfloor\frac{3Δ}{2}\rfloor+1$ when $G$ is an outerplanar graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3.$ In this paper we obtained that $χ_{st}^{'}(G) \leq Δ+6$ when $G$ is an 2-connected outerplanar graph with diameter 2 or 3. If $G$ is an 2-connected outerplanar graph wit…
Given an undirected graph $G = (V, E)$, and a vertex $r\in V$, an $r$-acyclic orientation of $G$ is an orientation $OE$ of the edges of $G$ such that the digraph $OG = (V, OE)$ is acyclic and $r$ is the unique vertex with indegree equal to 0. For $w\in \mathbb{R}^E_+$, $k(G, w)$ is the value of the $w$-maximum packing of $r$-arborescences for all $r\in V$ and all $r$-acyclic orientations $OE$ of $G$. In this case, the Broadcast Routing (in Computers Networks) Problem (BRP) is to compute $k(G, w)$, by finding an optimal $r$ and an optimal $r$-acyclic orientation. BRP is a mathematical formulati…

A $vi$-simultaneous proper $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of all vertices and incidences of the graph in which any two adjacent or incident elements in the set $V(G)\cup I(G)$ receive distinct colors, where $I(G)$ is the set of incidences of $G$. The $vi$-simultaneous chromatic number, denoted by $χ_{vi}(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ has a $vi$-simultaneous proper $k$-coloring. In [M. Mozafari-Nia, M. N. Iradmusa, A note on coloring of $\frac{3}{3}$-power of subquartic graphs, Vol. 79, No.3, 2021] $vi$-simultaneous proper coloring of graphs with maximum degree $4$ i…
Given a graph $G$ and a nondecreasing sequence $S=(s_1,\ldots,s_k)$ of positive integers, the mapping $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is called an $S$-packing coloring of $G$ if for any two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $c^{-1}(i)$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is greater than $s_i$. The smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $(1,2,\ldots,k)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted $χ_ρ(G)$. The question of boundedness of the packing chromatic number in the class of subcubic (planar) graphs was investigated in several earlier …
Although it has recently been proved that the packing chromatic number is unbounded on the class of subcubic graphs, there exists subclasses in which the packing chromatic number is finite (and small). These subclasses include subcubic trees, base-3 Sierpi{ń}ski graphs and hexagonal lattices. In this paper we are interested in the packing chromatic number of subcubic outerplanar graphs. We provide asymptotic bounds depending on structural properties of the outerplanar graphs and determine sharper bounds for some classes of subcubic outerplanar graphs.
One of the most famous algorithmic meta-theorems states that every graph property that can be defined by a sentence in counting monadic second order logic (CMSOL) can be checked in linear time for graphs of bounded treewidth, which is known as Courcelle's Theorem. These algorithms are constructed as finite state tree automata, and hence every CMSOL-definable graph property is recognizable. Courcelle also conjectured that the converse holds, i.e. every recognizable graph property is definable in CMSOL for graphs of bounded treewidth. We prove this conjecture for $k$-outerplanar graphs, which ar…
\textit{A star edge coloring} of a graph is a proper edge coloring without bichromatic paths and cycles of length four. In this paper we establish tight upper bounds for trees and subcubic outerplanar graphs, and derive an upper bound for outerplanar graphs.
In this paper we give an exact analytical expression for the number of spanning trees of an infinite family of outerplanar, small-world and self-similar graphs. This number is an important graph invariant related to different topological and dynamic properties of the graph, such as its reliability, synchronization capability and diffusion properties. The calculation of the number of spanning trees is a demanding and difficult task, in particular for large graphs, and thus there is much interest in obtaining closed expressions for relevant infinite graph families. We have also calculated the sp…

For distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ in a graph $G$, the {\em connectivity} between $u$ and $v$, denoted $κ_G(u,v)$, is the maximum number of internally disjoint $u$--$v$ paths in $G$. The {\em average connectivity} of $G$, denoted $\overlineκ(G),$ is the average of $κ_G(u,v)$ taken over all unordered pairs of distinct vertices $u,v$ of $G$. Analogously, for a directed graph $D$, the {\em connectivity} from $u$ to $v$, denoted $κ_D(u,v)$, is the maximum number of internally disjoint directed $u$--$v$ paths in $D$. The {\em average connectivity} of $D$, denoted $\overlineκ(D)$, is the average of $…

A star edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring of $G$ such that no path or cycle of length four is bi-colored. The star chromatic index of $G$, denoted by $χ^{\prime}_{s}(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ admits a star edge coloring with $k$ colors. Bezegov{á} et al. (Star edge coloring of some classes of graphs, J. Graph Theory, 81(1), pp.73-82. 2016) conjectured that the star chromatic index of outerplanar graphs with maximum degree $Δ$, is at most $\left\lfloor\frac{3Δ}{2}\right\rfloor+1$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for a class of outerplanar graphs, namely C…
The clique number of an undirected graph $G$ is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of $G$ and is a well-known lower bound for the chromatic number of $G$. Every proper $k$-coloring of $G$ may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge-preserving vertex mapping) of $G$ to the complete graph of order $k$. By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number co…
An orientation $D$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a digraph obtained from $G$ by replacing each edge by exactly one of the two possible arcs with the same end vertices. For each $v \in V(G)$, the indegree of $v$ in $D$, denoted by $d^-_D(v)$, is the number of arcs with head $v$ in $D$. An orientation $D$ of $G$ is proper if $d^-_D(u)\neq d^-_D(v)$, for all $uv\in E(G)$. An orientation with maximum indegree at most $k$ is called a $k$-orientation. The proper orientation number of $G$, denoted by $\overrightarrowχ(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a proper $k$-orientation. We prove t…
An orientation of a graph $G$ is {\it in-out-proper} if any two adjacent vertices have different in-out-degrees, where the in-out-degree of each vertex is equal to the in-degree minus the out-degree of that vertex. The {\it in-out-proper orientation number} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\overleftrightarrowχ(G)$, is $ \min_{D\in Γ}\max_{v\in V(G)} |d_D^{\pm}(v)|$, where $Γ$ is the set of in-out-proper orientations of $G$ and $d_D^{\pm}(v)$ is the in-out-degree of the vertex $v$ in the orientation $D$.
An orientation of a graph $G$ is proper if any two adjacent vertices have different indegrees. The proper orientation number $\overrightarrowχ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum of the maximum indegree, taken over all proper orientations of $G$. In this paper, we show that a connected bipartite graph may be properly oriented even if we are only allowed to control the orientation of a specific set of edges, namely, the edges of a spanning tree and all the edges incident to one of its leaves. As a consequence of this result, we prove that 3-connected planar bipartite graphs have proper orientatio…
The proper chromatic number $\Vecχ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that there exists an orientation of the edges of $G$ with all vertex-outdegrees at most $k$ and such that for any adjacent vertices, the outdegrees are different. Two major conjectures about the proper chromatic number are resolved. First it is shown, that $\Vecχ(G)$ of any planar graph $G$ is bounded (in fact, it is at most 14). Secondly, it is shown that for every graph, $\Vecχ(G)$ is at most $O(\frac{r\log r}{\log\log r})+\tfrac{1}{2}\MAD(G)$, where $r=χ(G)$ is the usual chromatic number of the graph, and $\MAD(G)…
We prove that if a graph has a tree-decomposition of width at most w, then it has a tree-decomposition of width at most w with certain desirable properties. We will use this result in a subsequent paper to show that every 2-connected graph of large path-width has a minor isomorphic to either a large tree with a vertex attached to every vertex of the tree or a large outerplanar graph.
The notion of a Galvin orientation of a line graph is introduced, generalizing the idea used by Galvin in his landmark proof of the list-edge-colouring conjecture for bipartite graphs. If L(G) has a proper Galvin orientation with respect to k, then it immediately implies that G is k-list-edge-colourable, but the converse is not true. The stronger property is studied in graphs of the form `bipartite plus an edge', the Petersen graph, cliques, and simple graphs without odd cycles of length 5 or longer.
The orientation completion problem for a class of oriented graphs asks whether a given partially oriented graph can be completed to an oriented graph in the class by orienting the unoriented edges of the partially oriented graph. Orientation completion problems have been studied recently for several classes of oriented graphs, yielding both polynomial time solutions as well as NP-completeness results. Local tournaments are a well-structured class of oriented graphs that generalize tournaments and their underlying graphs are intimately related to proper circular-arc graphs. According to Skrien,…
The orientation completion problem for a fixed class of oriented graphs asks whether a given partially oriented graph can be completed to an oriented graph in the class. Orientation completion problems have been studied recently for several classes of oriented graphs, yielding both polynomial time solutions and NP-completeness results. Local tournaments are a well-structured class of oriented graphs that generalize tournaments and their underlying graphs are intimately related to proper circular-arc graphs. Proper interval graphs are precisely those which can be oriented as acyclic local tourn…
This paper studies graphs that have two tree decompositions with the property that every bag from the first decomposition has a bounded-size intersection with every bag from the second decomposition. We show that every graph in each of the following classes has a tree decomposition and a linear-sized path decomposition with bounded intersections: (1) every proper minor-closed class, (2) string graphs with a linear number of crossings in a fixed surface, (3) graphs with linear crossing number in a fixed surface. Here `linear size' means that the total size of the bags in the path decomposition …
We consider the class of simple graphs with large algebraic connectivity (the second-smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix). For this class of graphs we determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of Eulerian orientations. In addition, we establish some new properties of the Laplacian matrix, as well as an estimate of a conditionality of matrices with the asymptotic diagonal predominance
Let $P$ be a graph with a vertex $v$ such that $P\backslash v$ is a forest, and let $Q$ be an outerplanar graph. We prove that there exists a number $p=p(P,Q)$ such that every 2-connected graph of path-width at least $p$ has a minor isomorphic to $P$ or $Q$. This result answers a question of Seymour and implies a conjecture of Marshall and Wood. The proof is based on a new property of tree-decompositions.
If $G$ is a graph and $\vec H$ is an oriented graph, we write $G\to \vec H$ to say that every orientation of the edges of $G$ contains $\vec H$ as a subdigraph. We consider the case in which $G=G(n,p)$, the binomial random graph. We determine the threshold $p_{\vec H}=p_{\vec H}(n)$ for the property $G(n,p)\to \vec H$ for the cases in which $\vec H$ is an acyclic orientation of a complete graph or of a cycle.
We show that the minimum number of orientations of the edges of the n-vertex complete graph having the property that every triangle is made cyclic in at least one of them is $\lceil\log_2(n-1)\rceil$. More generally, we also determine the minimum number of orientations of $K_n$ such that at least one of them orients some specific $k$-cycles cyclically on every $k$-element subset of the vertex set. The questions answered by these results were motivated by an analogous problem of Vera T. Sós concerning triangles and $3$-edge-colorings. Some variants of the problem are also considered.
An antimagic labeling of a directed graph $D$ with $n$ vertices and $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to the integers $\{1, \cdots, m\}$ such that all $n$ oriented vertex sums are pairwise distinct, where an oriented vertex sum is the sum of labels of all arcs entering that vertex minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving it. A graph $G$ has an antimagic orientation if it has an orientation which admits an antimagic labeling. Hefetz, M{ü}tze, and Schwartz conjectured that every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation. In this paper, we show that every bipartite grap…
Given a graph $G$, its orientation covering number $σ(G)$ is the smallest non-negative integer $k$ with the property that we can choose $k$ orientations of $G$ such that whenever $x, y, z$ are vertices of $G$ with $xy,xz\in E(G)$ then there is a chosen orientation in which both $xy$ and $xz$ are oriented away from $x$. Esperet, Gimbel and King showed that $σ(G)\leq σ\left(K_{χ(G)}\right)$, where $χ(G)$ is the chromatic number of $G$, and asked whether we always have equality. In this note we prove that it is indeed always the case that $σ(G)=σ(K_{χ(G)})$. We also determine the exact value of $…
A {\it semi-proper orientation} of a given graph $G$ is a function $(D,w)$ that assigns an orientation $D(e)$ and a positive integer weight $ w(e)$ to each edge $e$ such that for every two adjacent vertices $v$ and $u$, $S_{(D,w)}(v) \neq S_{(D,w)}(u) $, where $S_{(D,w)}(v) $ is the sum of the weights of edges with head $v$ in $D$. The {\it semi-proper orientation number} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\overrightarrowχ_s (G)$, is $ \min_{(D,w)\in Γ} \max_{v\in V(G)} S_{(D,w)}(v) $, where $Γ$ is the set of all semi-proper orientations of $G$. The {\it optimal semi-proper orientation} is a semi-pro…
Graph orientation is a well-studied area of graph theory. A proper orientation of a graph $G = (V,E)$ is an orientation $D$ of $E(G)$ such that for every two adjacent vertices $ v $ and $ u $, $ d^{-}_{D}(v) \neq d^{-}_{D}(u)$ where $d_{D}^{-}(v)$ is the number of edges with head $v$ in $D$. The proper orientation number of $G$ is defined as $ \overrightarrowχ (G) =\displaystyle \min_{D\in Γ} \displaystyle\max_{v\in V(G)} d^{-}_{D}(v) $ where $Γ$ is the set of proper orientations of $G$. We have $ χ(G)-1 \leq \overrightarrowχ (G)\leq Δ(G) $. We show that, it is $ \mathbf{NP} $-complete to deci…
A {\em conflict-free coloring} of a graph {\em with respect to open} (resp., {\em closed}) {\em neighborhood} is a coloring of vertices such that for every vertex there is a color appearing exactly once in its open (resp., closed) neighborhood. Similarly, a {\em unique-maximum coloring} of a graph {\em with respect to open} (resp., {\em closed}) {\em neighborhood} is a coloring of vertices such that for every vertex the maximum color appearing in its open (resp., closed) neighborhood appears exactly once. There is a vast amount of literature on both notions where the colorings need not be prop…
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of orientations with given out-degree (score) sequence for a graph $G$. The graph $G$ is assumed to have average degrees at least $n^{1/3 + \varepsilon}$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$, and to have strong mixing properties, while the maximum imbalance (out-degree minus in-degree) of the orientation should be not too large. Our enumeration results have applications to the study of subdigraph occurrences in random orientations with given imbalance sequence. As one step of our calculation, we obtain new bounds for the maximum likelihood estimators for the…

We present a connection between two seemingly disparate fields: VC-theory and graph theory. This connection yields natural correspondences between fundamental concepts in VC-theory, such as shattering and VC-dimension, and well-studied concepts of graph theory related to connectivity, combinatorial optimization, forbidden subgraphs, and others. In one direction, we use this connection to derive results in graph theory. Our main tool is a generalization of the Sauer-Shelah Lemma. Using this tool we obtain a series of inequalities and equalities related to properties of orientations of a graph. …
