We study random walks on $\mathbb Z^d$ (with $d\ge 2$) among stationary ergodic random conductances $\{C_{x,y}\colon x,y\in\mathbb Z^d\}$ that permit jumps of arbitrary length. Our focus is on the Quenched Invariance Principle (QIP) which we establish by a combination of corrector methods, functional inequalities and heat-kernel technology assuming that the $p$-th moment of $\sum_{x\in\mathbb Z^d}C_{0,x}|x|^2$ and $q$-th moment of $1/C_{0,x}$ for $x$ neighboring the origin are finite for some $p,q\ge1$ with $p^{-1}+q^{-1}<2/d$. In particular, a QIP thus holds for random walks on long-range percolation graphs with connectivity exponents larger than $2d$ in all $d\ge2$, provided all the nearest-neighbor edges are present. Although still limited by moment conditions, our method of proof is novel in that it avoids proving everywhere-sublinearity of the corrector. This is relevant because we show that, for long-range percolation with exponents between $d+2$ and $2d$, the corrector exists but fails to be sublinear everywhere. Similar examples are constructed also for nearest-neighbor, ergodic conductances in $d\ge3$ under the conditions complementary to those of the recent work of P. Bella and M. Schäffner. These examples elucidate the limitations of elliptic-regularity techniques that underlie much of the recent progress on these problems.
We show that there exists an ergodic conductance environment such that the weak (annealed) invariance principle holds for the corresponding continuous time random walk but the quenched invariance principle does not hold.
We prove an almost sure invariance principle for a random walker among i.i.d. conductances in $\Z^d$, $d\geq 2$. We assume conductances are bounded from above but we dot require they are bounded from below.
We show that there exists an ergodic conductance environment such that the weak (annealed) invariance principle holds for the corresponding continuous time random walk but the quenched invariance principle does not hold. In the present paper we give a proof of the full scaling limit for the weak invariance principle, improving the result in an earlier paper where we obtained a subsequential limit.
Consider a random walk among random conductances on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d\geq 2$. We study the quenched limit law under the usual diffusive scaling of the random walk conditioned to have its first coordinate positive. We show that the conditional limit law is the product of a Brownian meander and a $(d-1)$-dimensional Brownian motion.
We study a one-dimensional random walk among random conductances, with unbounded jumps. Assuming the ergodicity of the collection of conductances and a few other technical conditions (uniform ellipticity and polynomial bounds on the tails of the jumps) we prove a quenched conditional invariance principle for the random walk, under the condition that it remains positive until time $n$. As a corollary of this result, we study the effect of conditioning the random walk to exceed level $n$ before returning to 0 as $n\to \infty$.
We study a one-dimensional random walk among random conductances, with unbounded jumps. Assuming the ergodicity of the collection of conductances and a few other technical conditions (uniform ellipticity and polynomial bounds on the tails of the jumps) we prove a quenched \textit{uniform} invariance principle for the random walk. This means that the rescaled trajectory of length $n$ is (in a certain sense) close enough to the Brownian motion, uniformly with respect to the choice of the starting location in an interval of length $O(\sqrt{n})$ around the origin.
We discuss the quenched tail estimates for the random walk in random scenery. The random walk is the symmetric nearest neighbor walk and the random scenery is assumed to be independent and identically distributed, non-negative, and has a power law tail. We identify the long time aymptotics of the upper deviation probability of the random walk in quenched random scenery, depending on the tail of scenery distribution and the amount of the deviation. The result is in turn applied to the tail estimates for a random walk in random conductance which has a layered structure.

This is a continuation of our earlier work [Stochastic Processes and their Applications, 129(1), pp.102--128, 2019] on the random walk in random scenery and in random layered conductance. We complete the picture of upper deviation of the random walk in random scenery, and also prove a bound on lower deviation probability. Based on these results, we determine asymptotics of the return probability, a certain moderate deviation probability, and the Green function of the random walk in random layered conductance.
We consider a random walk on a random graph $(V,E)$, where $V$ is the set of open sites under i.i.d. Bernoulli site percolation on the multi-dimensional integer set $\mathbf{Z}^d$, and the transition probabilities of the walk are generated by i.i.d. random conductances (positive numbers) assigned to the edges in $E$. This random walk in random environments has long range jumps and is reversible. We prove the quenched invariance principle for this walk when the random conductances are unbounded from above but uniformly bounded from zero by taking the corrector approach. To this end, we prove a …
We consider the random conductance model in a stationary and ergodic environment. Under suitable moment conditions on the conductances and their inverse, we prove a quenched invariance principle for the random walk among the random conductances. The moment conditions improve earlier results of Andres, Deuschel and Slowik [Ann.\ Probab.] and are the minimal requirement to ensure that the corrector is sublinear everywhere. The key ingredient is an essentially optimal deterministic local boundedness result for finite difference equations in divergence form.
We establish two-sided heat kernel estimates for random conductance models with non-uniformly elliptic (possibly degenerate) stable-like jumps on graphs. These are long range counterparts of well known two-sided Gaussian heat kernel estimates by M.T. Barlow for nearest neighbor (short range) random walks on the supercritical percolation cluster. Unlike the cases for nearest neighbor conductance models, the idea through parabolic Harnack inequalities does not work, since even elliptic Harnack inequalities do not hold in the present setting. As an application, we establish the local limit theore…
We consider a stationary and ergodic random field $\{ω(e) : e \in E_d\}$ that is parameterized by the edge set of the Euclidean lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \geq 2$. The random variable $ω(e)$, taking values in $[0, \infty)$ and satisfying certain moment bounds, is thought of as the conductance of the edge $e$. Assuming that the set of edges with positive conductances give rise to a unique infinite cluster $\mathcal{C}_{\infty}(ω)$, we prove a quenched invariance principle for the continuous-time random walk among random conductances under relatively mild conditions on the structure of the infin…
We study a continuous-time random walk, $X$, on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an environment of dynamic random conductances taking values in $(0, \infty)$. We assume that the law of the conductances is ergodic with respect to space-time shifts. We prove a quenched invariance principle for the Markov process $X$ under some moment conditions on the environment. The key result on the sublinearity of the corrector is obtained by Moser's iteration scheme.
We study a continuous time random walk X in an environment of dynamic random conductances. We assume that the conductances are stationary ergodic, uniformly bounded and bounded away from zero and polynomially mixing in space and time. We prove a quenched invariance principle for X, and obtain Green's functions bounds and a local limit theorem. We also discuss a connection to stochastic interface models.
We study the quenched invariance principle for random conductance models with long range jumps on $\Z^d$, where the transition probability from $x$ to $y$ is, on average, comparable to $|x-y|^{-(d+α)}$ with $α\in (0,2)$ but is allowed to be degenerate. Under some moment conditions on the conductance, we prove that the scaling limit of the Markov process is a symmetric $α$-stable Lévy process on $\R^d$.The well-known corrector method in homogenization theory does not seem to work in this setting. Instead, we utilize probabilistic potential theory for the corresponding jump processes. Two essent…
We study asymmetric zero-range processes on Z with nearest-neighbour jumps and site disorder. The jump rate of particles is an arbitrary but bounded nondecreasing function of the number of particles. We prove quenched strong local equilibrium at subcritical and critical hydrodynamic densities, and dynamic local loss of mass at supercritical hydrodynamic densities. Our results do not assume starting from local Gibbs states. As byproducts of these results, we prove convergence of the process from given initial configurations with an asymptotic density of particles to the left of the origin. In p…
Via a Dirichlet form extension theorem and making full use of two-sided heat kernel estimates, we establish quenched invariance principles for random walks in random environments with a boundary. In particular, we prove that the random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster or among random conductances bounded uniformly from below in a half-space, quarter-space, etc., converges when rescaled diffusively to a reflecting Brownian motion, which has been one of the important open problems in this area. We establish a similar result for the random conductance model in a box, which allows us to…
We study a continuous time random walk $X$ in an environment of i.i.d. random conductances $μ_e\in[1,\infty)$. We obtain heat kernel bounds and prove a quenched invariance principle for $X$. This holds even when ${\mathbb{E}}μ_e=\infty$.
We take the point of view of a particle performing random walk with bounded jumps on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in a stationary and ergodic random environment. We prove the quenched large deviation principle (LDP) for the pair empirical measure of the environment Markov chain. By an appropriate contraction, we deduce the quenched LDP for the mean velocity of the particle and obtain a variational formula for the corresponding rate function. We propose an Ansatz for the minimizer of this formula. When $d=1$, we verify this Ansatz and generalize the nearest-neighbor result of Comets, Gantert and Zeitouni to …
We study random walks on $\mathbb Z^d$ among random conductances $\{C_{xy}\colon x,y\in\mathbb Z^d\}$ that permit jumps of arbitrary length. Apart from joint ergodicity with respect to spatial shifts, we assume only that the nearest-neighbor conductances are uniformly positive and that $\sum_{x\in\mathbb Z^d} C_{0x}|x|^2$ is integrable. Our focus is on the Quenched Invariance Principle (QIP) which we establish in all $d\ge3$ by a combination of corrector methods and heat-kernel technology. In particular, a QIP thus holds for random walks on long-range percolation graphs with exponents larger t…
We study homogenization properties of the discrete Laplace operator with random conductances on a large domain in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. More precisely, we prove almost-sure homogenization of the discrete Poisson equation and of the top of the Dirichlet spectrum. We assume that the conductances are stationary, ergodic and nearest-neighbor conductances are positive. In contrast to earlier results, we do not require uniform ellipticity but certain integrability conditions on the lower and upper tails of the conductances. We further allow jumps of arbitrary length. Without the long-range connections, th…
Recent progress in the understanding of quenched invariance principles (QIP) for a continuous-time random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an environment of dynamical random conductances is reviewed and extended to the $1$-dimensional case. The law of the conductances is assumed to be ergodic with respect to time-space shifts and satisfies certain integrability conditions.
We establish a quenched local central limit theorem for the dynamic random conductance model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ only assuming ergodicity with respect to space-time shifts and a moment condition. As a key analytic ingredient we show Hölder continuity estimates for solutions to the heat equation for discrete finite difference operators in divergence form with time-dependent degenerate weights. The proof is based on De Giorgi's iteration technique. In addition, we also derive a quenched local central limit theorem for the static random conductance model on a class of random graphs with degenerate …
In this paper we give general criteria on tightness and weak convergence of discrete Markov chains to symmetric jump processes on metric measure spaces under mild conditions. As an application, we investigate discrete approximation for a large class of symmetric jump processes. We also discuss some application of our results to the scaling limit of random walk in random conductance.
We study models of continuous-time, symmetric, $\Z^{d}$-valued random walks in random environments, driven by a field of i.i.d. random nearest-neighbor conductances $ω_{xy}\in[0,1]$ with a power law with an exponent $γ$ near 0. We are interested in estimating the quenched decay of the return probability $P_ω^{t}(0,0)$, as $t$ tends to $+\infty$. We show that for $γ> \frac{d}{2}$, the standard bound turns out to be of the correct logarithmic order. As an expected concequence, the same result holds for the discrete-time case.
We derive a quenched invariance principle for random walks in random environments whose transition probabilities are defined in terms of weighted cycles of bounded length. To this end, we adapt the proof for random walks among random conductances by Sidoravicius and Sznitman (Probab. Theory Related Fields 129 (2004) 219--244) to the non-reversible setting.
We derive an annealed large deviation principle (LDP) for the normalised and rescaled local times of a continuous-time random walk among random conductances (RWRC) in a time-dependent, growing box in $\Z^d$. We work in the interesting case that the conductances are positive, but may assume arbitrarily small values. Thus, the underlying picture of the principle is a joint strategy of small conductance values and large holding times of the walk. The speed and the rate function of our principle are explicit in terms of the lower tails of the conductance distribution as well as the time-dependent …

Fix a strictly positive measure $W$ on the $d$-dimensional torus $\bb T^d$. For an integer $N\ge 1$, denote by $W^N_x$, $x=(x_1, ..., x_d)$, $0\le x_i <N$, the $W$-measure of the cube $[x/N, (x+\mb 1)/N)$, where $\mb 1$ is the vector with all components equal to 1. In dimension 1, we prove that the hydrodynamic behavior of a superposition of independent random walks, in which a particle jumps from $x/N$ to one of its neighbors at rate $(N W^N_x)^{-1}$, is described in the diffusive scaling by the linear differential equation $\partial_t ρ= (d/dW)(d/dx) ρ$. In dimension $d>1$, if $W$ is a finit…
We prove polynomial decay of the mixing field of the Vertex Reinforced Jump Process (VRJP) on $\Bbb{Z}^2$ with bounded conductances. Using [17] we deduce that the VRJP on $\Bbb{Z}^2$ with any constant conductances is almost surely recurrent. It gives a counterpart of the result of Merkl, Rolles [14] and Sabot, Zeng [17] for the 2-dimensional Edge Reinforced Random Walk.
We consider a random walk in an i.i.d. Cauchy-tailed conductances environment. We obtain a quenched functional CLT for the suitably rescaled random walk, and, as a key step in the arguments, we improve the local limit theorem for $p^ω_{n^2t}(0,y)$ in [Ann. Probab. (2009). To appear], Theorem 5.14, to a result which gives uniform convergence for $p^ω_{n^2t}(x,y)$ for all $x,y$ in a ball.
We study a continuous time random walk, $X$, on ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ in an environment of random conductances taking values in $(0,\infty)$. We assume that the law of the conductances is ergodic with respect to space shifts. We prove a quenched invariance principle for $X$ under some moment conditions of the environment. The key result on the sublinearity of the corrector is obtained by Moser's iteration scheme.
We consider random walk with bounded jumps on a hypercubic lattice of arbitrary dimension in a dynamic random environment. The environment is temporally independent and spatially translation invariant. We study the rate functions of the level-3 averaged and quenched large deviation principles from the point of view of the particle. In the averaged case the rate function is a specific relative entropy, while in the quenched case it is a Donsker-Varadhan type relative entropy for Markov processes. We relate these entropies to each other and seek to identify the minimizers of the level-3 to level…
We consider self-avoiding walk on a tree with random conductances. It is proven that in the weak disorder regime, the quenched critical point is equal to the annealed one, and that in the strong disorder regime, these critical points are strictly different. Derrida and Spohn, and Baffet, Patrick and Pul$\acute{\rm e}$ give the exact value of the quenched critical point. We give another heuristic approach by the fractional moment estimate.
We consider a random walk in random environment with random holding times, that is, the random walk jumping to one of its nearest neighbors with some transition probability after a random holding time. Both the transition probabilities and the laws of the holding times are randomly distributed over the integer lattice. Our main result is a quenched large deviation principle for the position of the random walk. The rate function is given by the Legendre transform of the so-called Lyapunov exponents for the Laplace transform of the first passage time. By using this representation, we derive some…
We consider a random walk on Z^d in an i.i.d. balanced random environment, that is a random walk for which the probability to jump from x to nearest neighbor x+e is the same as to nearest neighbor x-e. Assuming that the environment is genuinely d-dimensional and balanced we show a quenched invariance principle: for P almost every environment, the diffusive rescaled random walk converges to a Brownian motion with deterministic non-degenerate diffusion matrix. Within the i.i.d. setting, our result extend both Lawler's uniformly elliptic result and Guo and Zeitouni's elliptic result to the genera…
We consider the symmetric simple exclusion process in $\mathbb Z^d$ with quenched bounded dynamic random conductances and prove its hydrodynamic limit in path space. The main tool is the connection, due to the self-duality of the process, between the invariance principle for single particles starting from all points and the macroscopic behavior of the density field. While the hydrodynamic limit at fixed macroscopic times is obtained via a generalization to the time-inhomogeneous context of the strategy introduced in \cite{nagy_symmetric_2002}, in order to prove tightness for the sequence of em…
The paper consists of two parts. In the first part we review recent work on limit theorems for random walks in random environment (RWRE) on a strip with jumps to the nearest layers. In the second part, we prove the quenched Local Limit Theorem (LLT) for the position of the walk in the transient diffusive regime. This fills an important gap in the literature. We then obtain two corollaries of the quenched LLT. The first one is the annealed version of the LLT on a strip. The second one is the proof of the fact that the distribution of the environment viewed from the particle (EVFP) has a limit f…
The Central Limit Theorem for the random walk on a stationary random network of conductances has been studied by several authors. In one dimension, when conductances and resistances are integrable, and following a method of martingale introduced by S. Kozlov (1985), we can prove the Quenched Central Limit Theorem. In that case the variance of the limit law is not null. When resistances are not integrable, the Annealed Central Limit Theorem with null variance was established by Y. Derriennic and M. Lin (personal communication). The quenched version of this last theorem is proved here, by using …
We consider continuous state branching processes (CSBP) with additional multiplicative jumps modeling dramatic events in a random environment. These jumps are described by a Lévy process with bounded variation paths. We construct a process of this class as the unique solution of a stochastic differential equation. The quenched branching property of the process allows us to derive quenched and annealed results and to observe new asymptotic behaviors. We characterize the Laplace exponent of the process as the solution of a backward ordinary differential equation and establish the probability of …
Given the variable-speed random walk on a weighted graph and a metric adapted to the structure of the random walk, we construct a Brownian motion on a closely related metric graph which behaves similarly to the VSRW and for which the associated intrinsic metric has certain desirable properties. Jump probabilities and moments of jump times for Brownian motion on metric graphs with varying edge lengths, jump conductances, and edge densities are computed. We use these results together with a theorem of Sturm for stochastic completeness, or non-explosiveness, on local Dirichlet spaces to prove sha…
We study the diagonal heat-kernel decay for the four-dimensional nearest-neighbor random walk (on $\Z^4$) among i.i.d. random conductances that are positive, bounded from above but can have arbitrarily heavy tails at zero. It has been known that the quenched return probability $\cmss P_ω^{2n}(0,0)$ after $2n$ steps is at most $C(ω) n^{-2} \log n$, but the best lower bound till now has been $C(ω) n^{-2}$. Here we will show that the $\log n$ term marks a real phenomenon by constructing an environment, for each sequence $λ_n\to\infty$, such that $$ \cmss P_ω^{2n}(0,0)\ge C(ω)\log(n)n^{-2}/λ_n, $$…
Consider a system of particles performing nearest neighbor random walks on the lattice $\ZZ$ under hard--core interaction. The rate for a jump over a given bond is direction--independent and the inverse of the jump rates are i.i.d. random variables belonging to the domain of attraction of an $\a$--stable law, $0<\a<1$. This exclusion process models conduction in strongly disordered one-dimensional media. We prove that, when varying over the disorder and for a suitable slowly varying function $L$, under the super-diffusive time scaling $N^{1 + 1/α}L(N)$, the density profile evolves as the solut…
We study variable-speed random walks on $\mathbb Z$ driven by a family of nearest-neighbor time-dependent random conductances $\{a_t(x,x+1)\colon x\in\mathbb Z, t\ge0\}$ whose law is assumed invariant and ergodic under space-time shifts. We prove a quenched invariance principle for the random walk under the minimal moment conditions on the environment; namely, assuming only that the conductances possess the first positive and negative moments. A novel ingredient is the representation of the parabolic coordinates and the corrector via a dual random walk which is considerably easier to analyze.
We consider the nearest-neighbor simple random walk on $\Z^d$, $d\ge2$, driven by a field of i.i.d. random nearest-neighbor conductances $ω_{xy}\in[0,1]$. Apart from the requirement that the bonds with positive conductances percolate, we pose no restriction on the law of the $ω$'s. We prove that, for a.e. realization of the environment, the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of non-degenerate, isotropic Brownian motion. The quenched functional CLT holds despite the fact that the local CLT may fail in $d\ge5$ due to anomalously slow decay of the probability that the walk ret…
