I added the construction of the minimizer of the variational formula for the rate function in the one-dimensional non-nearest-neighbor case, provided an explicit formula for the rate function, and indicated a qualitative difference from the nearest-neighbor case. We take the point of view of a particle performing random walk with bounded jumps on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in a stationary and ergodic random environment. We prove the quenched large deviation principle (LDP) for the pair empirical measure of the environment Markov chain. By an appropriate contraction, we deduce the quenched LDP for the mean velocity of the particle and obtain a variational formula for the corresponding rate function. We propose an Ansatz for the minimizer of this formula. When $d=1$, we verify this Ansatz and generalize the nearest-neighbor result of Comets, Gantert and Zeitouni to walks with bounded jumps.
We study the quenched behaviour of a perturbed version of the simple symmetric random walk on the set of integers. The random walker moves symmetrically with an exception of some randomly chosen sites where we impose a random drift. We show that if the gaps between the marked sites are i.i.d. and regularly varying with a sufficiently small index, then there is no strong quenched limit laws for the position of the random walker. As a consequence we study the quenched limit laws in the context of weak convergence of random measures.
We consider the small deviation probability for random walk with time-inhomogeneous random environment. Compared with the result in Mogul'ski\uı (1974) for the i.i.d. random walk, the rate is smaller (due to the random environment), which is specified in terms of the quenched and annealed variance.
Unlike classical simple random walks, one-dimensional random walks in random environments (RWRE) are known to have a wide array of potential limiting distributions. Under certain assumptions, however, it is known that CLT-like limiting distributions hold for the walk under both the quenched and averaged measures. We give upper bounds on the rates of convergence for the quenched central limit theorems for both the hitting time and position of the RWRE with polynomial rates of convergence that depend on the distribution on environments.
For a one-dimensional random walk in random scenery (RWRS) on Z, we determine its quenched weak limits by applying Strassen's functional law of the iterated logarithm. As a consequence, conditioned on the random scenery, the one-dimensional RWRS does not converge in law, in contrast with the multi-dimensional case.
Consider a random walk among random conductances on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d\geq 2$. We study the quenched limit law under the usual diffusive scaling of the random walk conditioned to have its first coordinate positive. We show that the conditional limit law is the product of a Brownian meander and a $(d-1)$-dimensional Brownian motion.
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for balanced random walks in time dependent ergodic random environments which is not necessarily nearest-neigbhor. We assume that the environment satisfies appropriate ergodicity and ellipticity conditions. The proof is based on the use of a maximum principle for parabolic difference operators.
We study quenched distributions on random walks in a random potential on integer lattices of arbitrary dimension and with an arbitrary finite set of admissible steps. The potential can be unbounded and can depend on a few steps of the walk. Directed, undirected and stretched polymers, as well as random walk in random environment, are covered. The restriction needed is on the moment of the potential, in relation to the degree of mixing of the ergodic environment. We derive two variational formulas for the limiting quenched free energy and prove a process-level quenched large deviation principle…
In this note, we prove a quenched functional central limit theorem for a biased random walk on a supercritical Galton-Watson tree with leaves. This extends a result of Peres and Zeitouni (2008) where the case without leaves is considered. A conjecture of Ben Arous and Fribergh (2016) suggests an upper bound on the bias which we observe to be sharp.
We prove an almost sure invariance principle for a random walker among i.i.d. conductances in $\Z^d$, $d\geq 2$. We assume conductances are bounded from above but we dot require they are bounded from below.
We prove the almost sure ('quenched') invariance principle for a random walker on an infinite Bernoulli percolation cluster in $\Z^d$ where $d$ is larger or equal than 2.
We discuss the quenched tail estimates for the random walk in random scenery. The random walk is the symmetric nearest neighbor walk and the random scenery is assumed to be independent and identically distributed, non-negative, and has a power law tail. We identify the long time aymptotics of the upper deviation probability of the random walk in quenched random scenery, depending on the tail of scenery distribution and the amount of the deviation. The result is in turn applied to the tail estimates for a random walk in random conductance which has a layered structure.
We prove a quenched local central limit theorem for continuous-time random walks in $\mathbb Z^d, d\ge 2$, in a uniformly-elliptic time-dependent balanced random environment which is ergodic under space-time shifts. We also obtain Gaussian upper and lower bounds for quenched and (positive and negative) moment estimates of the transition probabilities and asymptotics of the discrete Green function.
It is well known that random walks in one dimensional random environment can exhibit subdiffusive behavior due to presence of traps. In this paper we show that the passage times of different traps are asymptotically independent exponential random variables with parameters forming, asymptotically, a Poisson process. This allows us to prove weak quenched limit theorems in the subdiffusive regime where the contribution of traps plays the dominating role.
We consider the simple random walk on the graph corresponding to a Penrose tiling. We prove that the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of a non-degenerate Brownian motion for almost every Penrose tiling with respect to the appropriate invariant measure on the set of tilings. Our tool for this is the corrector method.
We consider the rates of convergence of the quenched central limit theorem for hitting times of one-dimensional random walks in a random environment. Previous results had identified polynomial upper bounds for the rates of decay which are sometimes slower than $n^{-1/2}$ (the optimal rate in the classical Berry-Esseen estimates). Here we prove that the previous upper bounds are in fact the best possible polynomial rates for the quenched CLT.
We consider simple random walks on Delaunay triangulations generated by point processes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under suitable assumptions on the point processes, we show that the random walk satisfies an almost sure (or quenched) invariance principle. This invariance principle holds for point processes which have clustering or repulsiveness properties including Poisson point processes, Mat{é}rn cluster and Mat{é}rn hardcore processes. The method relies on the decomposition of the process into a martingale part and a corrector which is proved to be negligible at the diffusive scale.
We consider an i.i.d. random environment with a strong form of transience on the two dimensional integer lattice. Namely, the walk always moves forward in the y-direction. We prove a functional CLT for the quenched expected position of the random walk indexed by its level crossing times. We begin with a variation of the Martingale Central Limit Theorem. The main part of the paper checks the conditions of the theorem for our problem.
We prove the quenched version of the central limit theorem for the displacement of a random walk in doubly stochastic random environment, under the $H_{-1}$-condition, with slightly stronger, $L^{2+\varepsilon}$ (rather than $L^2$) integrability condition on the stream tensor. On the way we extend Nash's moment bound to the non-reversible, divergence-free drift case.
We consider a random walk in a random potential on a square lattice of arbitrary dimension. The potential is a function of an ergodic environment and some steps of the walk. The potential can be unbounded, but it is subject to a moment assumption whose strictness is tied to the mixing of the environment, the best case being the i.i.d. environment. We prove that the infinite volume quenched point-to-point free energy exists and has a variational formula in terms of an entropy. We establish regularity properties of the point-to-point free energy, as a function of the potential and as a function …
We study a one-dimensional random walk among random conductances, with unbounded jumps. Assuming the ergodicity of the collection of conductances and a few other technical conditions (uniform ellipticity and polynomial bounds on the tails of the jumps) we prove a quenched conditional invariance principle for the random walk, under the condition that it remains positive until time $n$. As a corollary of this result, we study the effect of conditioning the random walk to exceed level $n$ before returning to 0 as $n\to \infty$.
We consider random walk on dynamical percolation on the discrete torus $\mathbb{Z}_n^d$. In previous work, mixing times of this process for $p<p_c(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ were obtained in the annealed setting where one averages over the dynamical percolation environment. Here we study exit times in the quenched setting, where we condition on a typical dynamical percolation environment. We obtain an upper bound for all $p$ which for $p<p_c$ matches the known lower bound.
We consider a bounded step size random walk in an ergodic random environment with some ellipticity, on an integer lattice of arbitrary dimension. We prove a level 3 large deviation principle, under almost every environment, with rate function related to a relative entropy.
In this paper, we are interested in some questions of Greven and den Hollander about the rate function $I\_η^q$ of quenched large deviations for random walk in random environment. By studying the hitting times of RWRE, we prove that in the recurrent case, $\lim\_{θ\to 0^+}(I\_η^q)''(θ)=+\infty$, which gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Greven and den Hollander. We also establish a comparison result between the rate function of quenched large deviations for a diffusion in a drifted Brownian potential, and the rate function for a drifted Brownian motion with the same speed.
We consider a one-dimensional, transient random walk in a random i.i.d. environment. The asymptotic behaviour of such random walk depends to a large extent on a crucial parameter $κ>0$ that determines the fluctuations of the process. When $0<κ<2$, the averaged distributions of the hitting times of the random walk converge to a $κ$-stable distribution. However, it was shown recently that in this case there does not exist a quenched limiting distribution of the hitting times. That is, it is not true that for almost every fixed environment, the distributions of the hitting times (centered and sca…
We consider the simple random walk on random graphs generated by discrete point processes. This random graph has a random subset of a cubic lattice as the vertices and lines between any consecutive vertices on lines parallel to each coordinate axis as the edges. Under the assumption that discrete point processes are finitely dependent and stationary, we prove that the quenched invariance principle holds, that is, for almost every configuration of a point process, the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of a Brownian motion.
We consider random walks in a balanced random environment in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$. We first prove an invariance principle (for $d\ge2$) and the transience of the random walks when $d\ge 3$ (recurrence when $d=2$) in an ergodic environment which is not uniformly elliptic but satisfies certain moment condition. Then, using percolation arguments, we show that under mere ellipticity, the above results hold for random walks in i.i.d. balanced environments.
In this article we continue the study of the quenched distributions of transient, one-dimensional random walks in a random environment. In a previous article we showed that while the quenched distributions of the hitting times do not converge to any deterministic distribution, they do have a weak weak limit in the sense that - viewed as random elements of the space of probability measures - they converge in distribution to a certain random probability measure (we refer to this as a weak weak limit because it is a weak limit in the weak topology). Here, we improve this result to the path-valued…
Consider the invariance principle for a random walk with random environment (denoted by $μ$) in time on $\bfR$ in a weak quenched sense. We show that a sequence of the random probability measures on $\bfR$ generated by a bounded Lipschitz functional $f$ and $μ$ will converge in distribution to another random probability measures, which is related to $f$ and two independent Brownian motions. The upper bound of the convergence rate has been obtained. We also explain that in general, this convergence can not be strengthened to the almost surely sense.
We consider a ballistic random walk in an i.i.d. random environment that does not allow retreating in a certain fixed direction. We prove an invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) under almost every fixed environment. The assumptions are nonnestling, at least two spatial dimensions, and a $2+ε$ moment for the step of the walk uniformly in the environment. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
We consider a random walk on a random graph $(V,E)$, where $V$ is the set of open sites under i.i.d. Bernoulli site percolation on the multi-dimensional integer set $\mathbf{Z}^d$, and the transition probabilities of the walk are generated by i.i.d. random conductances (positive numbers) assigned to the edges in $E$. This random walk in random environments has long range jumps and is reversible. We prove the quenched invariance principle for this walk when the random conductances are unbounded from above but uniformly bounded from zero by taking the corrector approach. To this end, we prove a …
We derive a quenched invariance principle for random walks in random environments whose transition probabilities are defined in terms of weighted cycles of bounded length. To this end, we adapt the proof for random walks among random conductances by Sidoravicius and Sznitman (Probab. Theory Related Fields 129 (2004) 219--244) to the non-reversible setting.
We prove a full large deviations principle in large time, for a diffusion process with random drift V, which is a centered Gaussian shear flow random field. The large deviations principle is established in a ``quenched'' setting, i.e. is valid almost surely in the randomness of V.
We study a one-dimensional random walk among random conductances, with unbounded jumps. Assuming the ergodicity of the collection of conductances and a few other technical conditions (uniform ellipticity and polynomial bounds on the tails of the jumps) we prove a quenched \textit{uniform} invariance principle for the random walk. This means that the rescaled trajectory of length $n$ is (in a certain sense) close enough to the Brownian motion, uniformly with respect to the choice of the starting location in an interval of length $O(\sqrt{n})$ around the origin.
We consider random walk with bounded jumps on a hypercubic lattice of arbitrary dimension in a dynamic random environment. The environment is temporally independent and spatially translation invariant. We study the rate functions of the level-3 averaged and quenched large deviation principles from the point of view of the particle. In the averaged case the rate function is a specific relative entropy, while in the quenched case it is a Donsker-Varadhan type relative entropy for Markov processes. We relate these entropies to each other and seek to identify the minimizers of the level-3 to level…
We consider a random walk in random environment with random holding times, that is, the random walk jumping to one of its nearest neighbors with some transition probability after a random holding time. Both the transition probabilities and the laws of the holding times are randomly distributed over the integer lattice. Our main result is a quenched large deviation principle for the position of the random walk. The rate function is given by the Legendre transform of the so-called Lyapunov exponents for the Laplace transform of the first passage time. By using this representation, we derive some…
We consider large deviations for nearest-neighbor random walk in a uniformly elliptic i.i.d. environment. It is easy to see that the quenched and the averaged rate functions are not identically equal. When the dimension is at least four and Sznitman's transience condition (T) is satisfied, we prove that these rate functions are finite and equal on a closed set whose interior contains every nonzero velocity at which the rate functions vanish.
We consider a nearest-neighbor, one-dimensional random walk $\{X_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ in a random i.i.d. environment, in the regime where the walk is transient with speed v_P > 0 and there exists an $s\in(1,2)$ such that the annealed law of $n^{-1/s} (X_n - n v_P)$ converges to a stable law of parameter s. Under the quenched law (i.e., conditioned on the environment), we show that no limit laws are possible. In particular we show that there exist sequences {t_k} and {t_k'} depending on the environment only, such that a quenched central limit theorem holds along the subsequence t_k, but the quenched …
We study a one-dimensional random walk among random conductances, with unbounded jumps. Assuming the ergodicity of the collection of conductances and a few other technical conditions (uniform ellipticity and polynomial bounds on the tails of the jumps) we prove a quenched \textit{conditional} invariance principle for the random walk, under the condition that it remains positive until time $n$. As a corollary of this result, we study the effect of conditioning the random walk to exceed level $n$ before returning to 0 as $n\to \infty$. One of the main tools for proving these conditional limit la…
Random walks in random scenery are processes defined by $$Z_n:=\sum_{k=1}^nω_{S_k}$$ where $S:=(S_k,k\ge 0)$ is a random walk evolving in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $ω:=(ω_x, x\in{\mathbb Z}^d)$ is a sequence of i.i.d. real random variables. Under suitable assumptions on the random walk $S$ and the random scenery $ω$, almost surely with respect to $ω$, the correctly renormalized sequence $(Z_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is proved to converge in distribution to a centered Gaussian law with explicit variance.
We consider a random walk on Z^d in an i.i.d. balanced random environment, that is a random walk for which the probability to jump from x to nearest neighbor x+e is the same as to nearest neighbor x-e. Assuming that the environment is genuinely d-dimensional and balanced we show a quenched invariance principle: for P almost every environment, the diffusive rescaled random walk converges to a Brownian motion with deterministic non-degenerate diffusion matrix. Within the i.i.d. setting, our result extend both Lawler's uniformly elliptic result and Guo and Zeitouni's elliptic result to the genera…
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for random walks in i.i.d. weakly elliptic random environments in the ballistic regime. Such theorems have been proved recently by Rassoul-Agha and Seppäläinen in [10] and Berger and Zeitouni in [2] under the assumption of large finite moments for the regeneration time. In this paper, with the extra $(T)_γ$ condition of Sznitman we reduce the moment condition to ${\Bbb E}(τ^2(\ln τ)^{1+m})<+\infty$ for $m>1+1/γ$, which allows the inclusion of new non-uniformly elliptic examples such as Dirichlet random environments.
We study a continuous-time random walk, $X$, on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an environment of dynamic random conductances taking values in $(0, \infty)$. We assume that the law of the conductances is ergodic with respect to space-time shifts. We prove a quenched invariance principle for the Markov process $X$ under some moment conditions on the environment. The key result on the sublinearity of the corrector is obtained by Moser's iteration scheme.
We take the point of view of the particle in a multidimensional nearest neighbor random walk in random environment (RWRE). We prove a quenched large deviation principle and derive a variational formula for the quenched rate function. Most of the previous results in this area rely on the subadditive ergodic theorem. We employ a different technique which is based on a minimax theorem. Large deviation principles for RWRE have been proven for i.i.d. nestling environments subject to a moment condition and for ergodic uniformly elliptic environments. We assume only that the environment is ergodic an…
We prove a shape theorem and derive a variational formula for the limiting quenched Lyapunov exponent and the Green's function of random walk in a random potential on a square lattice of arbitrary dimension and with an arbitrary finite set of steps. The potential is a function of a stationary environment and the step of the walk. This potential is subject to a moment assumption whose strictness is tied to the mixing of the environment. Our setting includes directed and undirected polymers, random walk in static and dynamic random environment, and, when the temperature is taken to zero, our res…
We prove that every random walk in i.i.d. environment in dimension greater than or equal to 2 that has an almost sure positive speed in a certain direction, an annealed invariance principle and some mild integrability condition for regeneration times also satisfies a quenched invariance principle. The argument is based on intersection estimates and a theorem of Bolthausen and Sznitman.
This is a continuation of our earlier work [Stochastic Processes and their Applications, 129(1), pp.102--128, 2019] on the random walk in random scenery and in random layered conductance. We complete the picture of upper deviation of the random walk in random scenery, and also prove a bound on lower deviation probability. Based on these results, we determine asymptotics of the return probability, a certain moderate deviation probability, and the Green function of the random walk in random layered conductance.
We establish via a probabilistic approach the quenched invariance principle for a class of long range random walks in independent (but not necessarily identically distributed) balanced random environments, with the transition probability from $x$ to $y$ on average being comparable to $|x-y|^{-(d+α)}$ with $α\in (0,2]$. We use the martingale property to estimate exit time from balls and establish tightness of the scaled processes, and apply the uniqueness of the martingale problem to identify the limiting process. When $α\in (0,1)$, our approach works even for non-balanced cases. When $α=2$, un…
Via a Dirichlet form extension theorem and making full use of two-sided heat kernel estimates, we establish quenched invariance principles for random walks in random environments with a boundary. In particular, we prove that the random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster or among random conductances bounded uniformly from below in a half-space, quarter-space, etc., converges when rescaled diffusively to a reflecting Brownian motion, which has been one of the important open problems in this area. We establish a similar result for the random conductance model in a box, which allows us to…
We introduce a perceptron version of the Generalized Random Energy Model, and prove a quenched Sanov type large deviation principle for the empirical distribution of the random energies. The dual of the rate function has a representation through a variational formula which is closely related to the Parisi variational formula for the SK-model.
This thesis concerns the study of random walks in random environments (RWRE). Since there are two levels of randomness for random walks in random environments, there are two different distributions for the random walk that can be studied. The quenched distribution is the law of the random walk conditioned on a given environment. The annealed distribution is the quenched law averaged over all environments. The main results of the thesis fall into two categories: quenched limiting distributions for one-dimensional, transient RWRE and annealed large deviations for multidimensional RWRE. The analy…
Random walks in random sceneries (RWRS) are simple examples of stochastic processes in disordered media. They were introduced at the end of the 70's by Kesten-Spitzer and Borodin, motivated by the construction of new self-similar processes with stationary increments. Two sources of randomness enter in their definition: a random field $ξ= (ξ_x)_{x \in \Z^d}$ of i.i.d.\ random variables, which is called the \emph{random scenery}, and a random walk $S = (S_n)_{n \in \N}$ evolving in $\Z^d$, independent from the scenery. The RWRS $Z = (Z_n)_{n \in \N}$ is then defined as the accumulated scenery al…
We prove a {\it{quenched}} large deviation principle (LDP) for a simple random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster (SRWPC) on $\mathbb Z^d$ ($d\geq 2$). The models under interest include classical Bernoulli bond and site percolation as well as models that exhibit long range correlations, like the random cluster model, the random interlacement and {the vacant set of random interlacements} (for $d\geq 3$) and the level sets of the Gaussian free field ($d\geq 3$). Inspired by the methods developed by Kosygina, Rezakhanlou and Varadhan ([KRV06]) for proving quenched LDP for elliptic diffus…
Consider a random walk in a time-dependent random environment on the lattice Zd. Recently, Rassoul-Agha, Seppalainen and Yilmaz [RSY11] proved a general large deviation principle under mild ergodicity assumptions on the random environment for such a random walk, establishing first level 2 and 3 large deviation principles. Here we present two alternative short proofs of the level 1 large deviations under mild ergodicity assumptions on the environment: one for the continuous time case and another one for the discrete time case. Both proofs provide the existence, continuity and convexity of the…
We prove a quenched functional central limit theorem (quenched FCLT) for the sums of a random field (r.f.) along a 2d-random walk in different situations: when the r.f. is iid with a second order moment (random sceneries), or when it is generated by the action of commuting automorphisms of a torus. We consider also a quenched version of the FCLT when the random walk is replaced by a Lorentz process in the random scenery.
