We study models of continuous-time, symmetric, $\Z^{d}$-valued random walks in random environments, driven by a field of i.i.d. random nearest-neighbor conductances $ω_{xy}\in[0,1]$ with a power law with an exponent $γ$ near 0. We are interested in estimating the quenched decay of the return probability $P_ω^{t}(0,0)$, as $t$ tends to $+\infty$. We show that for $γ> \frac{d}{2}$, the standard bound turns out to be of the correct logarithmic order. As an expected concequence, the same result holds for the discrete-time case.
Recently, Kigami's resistance form framework has been applied to provide a general approach for deriving the scaling limits of random walks on graphs with a fractal scaling limit. As an illustrative example, this article describes an application to the random conductance model with heavy tails on nested fractal graphs.
We prove upper bounds on the transition probabilities of random walks with i.i.d. random conductances with a polynomial lower tail near $0$. We consider both constant and variable speed models. Our estimates are sharp. As a consequence, we derive local central limit theorems, parabolic Harnack inequalities and Gaussian bounds for the heat kernel. Some of the arguments are robust and applicable for random walks on general graphs. Such results are stated under a general setting.
We discuss the quenched tail estimates for the random walk in random scenery. The random walk is the symmetric nearest neighbor walk and the random scenery is assumed to be independent and identically distributed, non-negative, and has a power law tail. We identify the long time aymptotics of the upper deviation probability of the random walk in quenched random scenery, depending on the tail of scenery distribution and the amount of the deviation. The result is in turn applied to the tail estimates for a random walk in random conductance which has a layered structure.
This is a continuation of our earlier work [Stochastic Processes and their Applications, 129(1), pp.102--128, 2019] on the random walk in random scenery and in random layered conductance. We complete the picture of upper deviation of the random walk in random scenery, and also prove a bound on lower deviation probability. Based on these results, we determine asymptotics of the return probability, a certain moderate deviation probability, and the Green function of the random walk in random layered conductance.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the principal eigenvector and eigenvalue of the random conductance Laplacian in a large domain of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d\geq 2$) with zero Dirichlet condition. We assume that the conductances $w$ are positive i.i.d. random variables, which fulfill certain regularity assumptions near zero. If $γ=\sup \{ q\geq 0\colon \mathbb{E} [w^{-q}]<\infty \}<1/4$, then we show that for almost every environment the principal Dirichlet eigenvector asymptotically concentrates in a single site and the corresponding eigenvalue scales subdiffusively. The threshold $γ_{\rm c} = 1/4…
We generalize our former localization result about the principal Dirichlet eigenvector of the i.i.d. heavy-tailed random conductance Laplacian to the first $k$ eigenvectors. We overcome the complication that the higher eigenvectors have fluctuating signs by invoking the Bauer-Fike theorem to show that the $k$th eigenvector is close to the principal eigenvector of an auxiliary spectral problem.
We consider a one-dimensional random walk among biased i.i.d. conductances, in the case where the random walk is transient but sub-ballistic: this occurs when the conductances have a heavy-tail at $+\infty$ or at $0$. We prove that the scaling limit of the process is the inverse of an $α$-stable subordinator, which indicates an aging phenomenon, expressed in terms of the generalized arcsine law. In analogy with the case of an i.i.d. random environment studied in details in [Enriquez, Sabot, Zindy, Bull. Soc. Math. 2009; Enriquez, Sabot, Tournier, Zindy, Ann. Appl. Probab. 2013], some `traps' a…
We study the random conductance model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with ergodic, unbounded conductances. We prove a Gaussian lower bound on the heat kernel given a polynomial moment condition and some additional assumptions on the correlations of the conductances. The proof is based on the well-established chaining technique. We also obtain bounds on the Green's function.
We study discrete linear divergence-form operators with random coefficients, also known as the random conductance model. We assume that the conductances are bounded, independent and stationary; the law of a conductance may depend on the orientation of the associated edge. We give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the relaxation of the environment seen by the particle to be diffusive, in the sense of every polynomial moment. As a consequence, we derive polynomial moment estimates on the corrector.
We obtain decay rates of probabilities of tails of polynomials in several independent random variables with heavy tails and derive stable limit theorems for nonconventional sums of such polynomials
We study homogenization properties of the discrete Laplace operator with random conductances on a large domain in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. More precisely, we prove almost-sure homogenization of the discrete Poisson equation and of the top of the Dirichlet spectrum. We assume that the conductances are stationary, ergodic and nearest-neighbor conductances are positive. In contrast to earlier results, we do not require uniform ellipticity but certain integrability conditions on the lower and upper tails of the conductances. We further allow jumps of arbitrary length. Without the long-range connections, th…
We obtain first decay rates of probabilities of tails of multivariate polynomials built on independent random variables with heavy tails. Then we derive stable limit theorems for nonconventional sums of the form $\sum_{Nt\geq n\geq 1}F(X(q_1(n)),...,X(q_\ell(n)))$ where $F$ is a polynomial, $1\leq q_1(n)<\cdots <q_\ell(n)$ are integer valued increasing functions satisfying certain conditions and $X(n),\, n\geq 0$ is a sequence of independent random variables with heavy tails.
Let $P$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ in independent Bernoulli random variables which has zero mean and unit variance. The Bonami hypercontractivity bound implies that the probability that $|P| > t$ decays exponentially in $t^{2/d}$. Confirming a conjecture of Keller and Klein, we prove a local version of this bound, providing an upper bound on the difference between the $e^{-r}$ and the $e^{-r-1}$ quantiles of $P$.
We prove polynomial decay of the mixing field of the Vertex Reinforced Jump Process (VRJP) on $\Bbb{Z}^2$ with bounded conductances. Using [17] we deduce that the VRJP on $\Bbb{Z}^2$ with any constant conductances is almost surely recurrent. It gives a counterpart of the result of Merkl, Rolles [14] and Sabot, Zeng [17] for the 2-dimensional Edge Reinforced Random Walk.
In this paper non-asymptotic moment estimates are derived for tail of distribution for discrete time polynomial martingale by means of martingale differences as a rule in the terms of unconditional and unconditional relative moments and tails of distributions of summands. We show also the exactness of obtained estimations.
We prove that the largest and smallest root in modulus of random Kac polynomials have a non-universal behavior. They do not converge towards the edge of the support of the limiting distribution of the zeros. This non-universality is surprising as the large deviation principle for the empirical measure is universal. This is in sharp contrast with random matrix theory where the large deviation principle is non-universal but the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue are universal. We show that the modulus of the largest zero is heavy tailed, with a number of finite moments bounded from above by …
The $N$-particle branching random walk is a discrete time branching particle system with selection. We have $N$ particles located on the real line at all times. At every time step each particle is replaced by two offspring, and each offspring particle makes a jump of non-negative size from its parent's location, independently from the other jumps, according to a given jump distribution. Then only the $N$ rightmost particles survive; the other particles are removed from the system to keep the population size constant. Inspired by work of J. Bérard and P. Maillard, we examine the long term behav…
In this paper, we discuss the convergence rate of empirical processes of Gaussian processes for a large class of function families. Our main goal is to show that the tail of the uniform norm of the empirical processes can be dominated by polynomials. We put forward the properties of Hermite polynomials which play a crucial role in the proof of main theorems. At the end of the paper, we show the expectation of the random quantity converging to zero at a more rapid rate n^{-1/2+ε} than ever shown rate n^{-1/3}.
This article shows a strong averaging principle for diffusions driven by discontinuous heavy-tailed Lévy noise, which are invariant on the compact horizontal leaves of a foliated manifold subject to small transversal random perturbations. We extend a result for such diffusions with exponential moments and bounded, deterministic perturbations to diffusions with polynomial moments of order $p\geq 2$, perturbed by deterministic and stochastic integrals with unbounded coefficients and polynomial moments. The main argument relies on a result of the dynamical system for each individual jump incremen…
A computable estimate of the readiness coefficient for a standard binary-state system is established in the case where both working and repair time distributions possess heavy tails.
The branching-ruin number of a tree, which describes its asymptotic growth and geometry, can be seen as a polynomial version of the branching number. This quantity was defined by Collevecchio, Kious and Sidoravicius (2018) in order to understand the phase transitions of the once-reinforced random walk (ORRW) on trees. Strikingly, this number was proved to be equal to the critical parameter of ORRW on trees. In this paper, we continue the investigation of the link between the branching-ruin number and the criticality of random processes on trees. First, we study random walks on random conductan…
The upper tail problem in the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G\sim\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of a graph $H$ in $G$ exceeds its expectation by a factor $1+δ$. Chatterjee and Dembo showed that in the sparse regime of $p\to 0$ as $n\to\infty$ with $p \geq n^{-α}$ for an explicit $α=α_H>0$, this problem reduces to a natural variational problem on weighted graphs, which was thereafter asymptotically solved by two of the authors in the case where $H$ is a clique. Here we extend the latter work to any fixed graph $H$ and determine a function $c_H(δ)$ suc…
Gaps (or spacings) between consecutive eigenvalues are a central topic in random matrix theory. The goal of this paper is to study the tail distribution of these gaps in various random matrix models. We give the first repulsion bound for random matrices with discrete entries and the first super-polynomial bound on the probability that a random graph has simple spectrum, along with several applications.
Let $X$ be a standard Gaussian random variable. For any $p \in (1, \infty)$, we prove the existence of a universal constant $C_{p}>0$ such that the inequality $$(\mathbb{E} |h'(X)|^{p})^{1/p} \geq C_{p} \sqrt{d} (\mathbb{E} |h(X)|^{p})^{1/p}$$ holds for all $d\geq 1$ and all polynomials $h : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$ whose spectrum is supported on frequencies at least $d$, that is, $\mathbb{E} h(X) X^{k}=0$ for all $k=0,1, \ldots, d-1$. As an application of this optimal estimate, we obtain an affirmative answer to the Gaussian analogue of a question of Mendel and Naor (2014) concerning the gr…
