The upper tail problem in the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G\sim\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of a graph $H$ in $G$ exceeds its expectation by a factor $1+δ$. Chatterjee and Dembo showed that in the sparse regime of $p\to 0$ as $n\to\infty$ with $p \geq n^{-α}$ for an explicit $α=α_H>0$, this problem reduces to a natural variational problem on weighted graphs, which was thereafter asymptotically solved by two of the authors in the case where $H$ is a clique.
Here we extend the latter work to any fixed graph $H$ and determine a function $c_H(δ)$ such that, for $p$ as above and any fixed $δ>0$, the upper tail probability is $\exp[-(c_H(δ)+o(1))n^2 p^Δ\log(1/p)]$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $H$. As it turns out, the leading order constant in the large deviation rate function, $c_H(δ)$, is governed by the independence polynomial of $H$, defined as $P_H(x)=\sum i_H(k) x^k $ where $i_H(k)$ is the number of independent sets of size $k$ in $H$. For instance, if $H$ is a regular graph on $m$ vertices, then $c_H(δ)$ is the minimum between $\frac12 δ^{2/m}$ and the unique positive solution of $P_H(x) = 1+δ$.
The $k$-independence number of a graph $G$ is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$. In this paper, for each positive integer $k$, we prove sharp upper bounds for the $k$-independence number in an $n$-vertex connected graph with given minimum and maximum degree.
A well known upper bound for the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$, due to Cvetković, is that \begin{equation*} α(G) \le n^0 + \min\{n^+ , n^-\} \end{equation*} where $(n^+, n^0, n^-)$ is the inertia of $G$. We prove that this bound is also an upper bound for the quantum independence number $α_q$(G), where $α_q(G) \ge α(G)$ and for some graphs $α_q(G) \gg α(G)$. We identify numerous graphs for which $α(G) = α_q(G)$, thus increasing the number of graphs for which $α_q$ is known. We also demonstrate that there are graphs for which the above bound is not exact with any Hermitian weight ma…
A well known upper bound for the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$, is that \[ α(G) \le n^0 + \min\{n^+ , n^-\}, \] where $(n^+, n^0, n^-)$ is the inertia of $G$. We prove that this bound is also an upper bound for the quantum independence number $α_q$(G), where $α_q(G) \ge α(G)$. We identify numerous graphs for which $α(G) = α_q(G)$ and demonstrate that there are graphs for which the above bound is not exact with any Hermitian weight matrix, for $α(G)$ and $α_q(G)$. This result complements results by the authors that many spectral lower bounds for the chromatic number are also lower b…
Studying independent sets of maximum size is equivalent to considering the hard-core model with the fugacity parameter $λ$ tending to infinity. Finding the independence ratio of random $d$-regular graphs for some fixed degree $d$ has received much attention both in random graph theory and in statistical physics. For $d \geq 20$ the problem is conjectured to exhibit 1-step replica symmetry breaking (1-RSB). The corresponding 1-RSB formula for the independence ratio was confirmed for (very) large $d$ in a breakthrough paper by Ding, Sly, and Sun. Furthermore, the so-called interpolation method s…
Building on the techniques from the breakthrough paper of Harel, Mousset and Samotij, which solved the upper tail problem for cliques, we compute the asymptotics of the upper tail for the number of induced copies of the 4-cycle in the binomial random graph $G_{n,p}$. We observe a new phenomenon in the theory of large deviations of subgraph counts. This phenomenon is that, in a certain (large) range of $p$, the upper tail of the induced 4-cycle does not admit a naive mean-field approximation.
General upper tail estimates are given for counting edges in a random induced subhypergraph of a fixed hypergraph H, with an easy proof by estimating the moments. As an application we consider the numbers of arithmetic progressions and Schur triples in random subsets of integers. In the second part of the paper we return to the subgraph counts in random graphs and provide upper tail estimates in the rooted case.
Consider the upper tail probability that the homomorphism count of a fixed graph $H$ within a large sparse random graph $G_n$ exceeds its expected value by a fixed factor $1+δ$. Going beyond the Erdős-Rényi model, we establish here explicit, sharp upper tail decay rates for sparse random $d_n$-regular graphs (provided $H$ has a regular $2$-core), and for sparse uniform random graphs. We further deal with joint upper tail probabilities for homomorphism counts of multiple graphs $H_1,\ldots, H_k$ (extending the known results for $k=1$), and for inhomogeneous graph ensembles (such as the stochast…
A broadcast on a nontrivial connected graph G with vertex set V is a function f from V to {0,1,...,diam(G)} such that f(v) is at most the eccentricity of v for all vertices v. The weight of f is the sum of the function values taken over V. A vertex u hears f from v if f(v) is positive and d(u,v) is at most f(v). A broadcast f is boundary independent if, for any vertex w that hears f from vertices v_{1},...,v_{k}, where k is at least 2, d(w,v_{i}) equals f(v_{i}) for each i. The maximum weight of a boundary independent broadcast on G is denoted by α_{bn}(G). We prove a sharp upper bound on α_{b…
Suppose that $X$ is a bounded-degree polynomial with nonnegative coefficients on the $p$-biased discrete hypercube. Our main result gives sharp estimates on the logarithmic upper tail probability of $X$ whenever an associated extremal problem satisfies a certain entropic stability property. We apply this result to solve two long-standing open problems in probabilistic combinatorics: the upper tail problem for the number of arithmetic progressions of a fixed length in the $p$-random subset of the integers and the upper tail problem for the number of cliques of a fixed size in the random graph $…
A broadcast on a nontrivial connected graph G with vertex set V is a function f from V to {0,1,...,diam(G)} such that f(v) is at most the eccentricity of v for all v in V. The weight of f is the sum of the function values taken over V. A vertex u hears f from v if f(v) is positive and d(u,v) is at most f(v). A broadcast f is dominating if every vertex of G hears f. The upper broadcast number of G is Γ_{b}(G), which is the maximum weight of a minimal dominating broadcast on G. A broadcast f is boundary independent if, for any vertex w that hears f from vertices v_{1},...,v_{k}, where k is at le…
After $2$-crossing-critical graphs were characterized in 2016, their most general subfamily, large $3$-connected $2$-crossing-critical graphs, has attracted separate attention. This paper presents sharp upper and lower bounds for their domination and independence number.
For r \ge 2, let X be the number of r-armed stars K_{1,r} in the binomial random graph G_{n,p}. We study the upper tail \Pr(X \ge (1+ε)\E X), and establish exponential bounds which are best possible up to constant factors in the exponent (for the special case of stars K_{1,r} this solves a problem of Janson and Rucinski, and confirms a conjecture by DeMarco and Kahn). In contrast to the widely accepted standard for the upper tail problem, we do not restrict our attention to constant ε, but also allow for ε\ge n^{-α} deviations.
With $ξ$ the number of triangles in the usual (Erdős-Rényi) random graph $G(m,p)$, $p>1/m$ and $η>0$, we show (for some $C_η>0$) $$\Pr(ξ> (1+η)\E ξ) < \exp[-C_η\min{m^2p^2\log(1/p),m^3p^3}].$$ This is tight up to the value of $C_η$.
Given a fixed graph H, what is the (exponentially small) probability that the number X_H of copies of H in the binomial random graph G_{n,p} is at least twice its mean? Studied intensively since the mid 1990s, this so-called infamous upper tail problem remains a challenging testbed for concentration inequalities. In 2011 DeMarco and Kahn formulated an intriguing conjecture about the exponential rate of decay of \Pr(X_H \ge (1+ε) \E X_H) for fixed ε>0. We show that this upper tail conjecture is false, by exhibiting an infinite family of graphs violating the conjectured bound.
With $ξ_{k}=ξ_{k}^{n,p}$ the number of copies of $K_k$ in the usual (Erdős-Rényi) random graph $G(n,p)$, $p\geq n^{-2/(k-1)}$ and $η>0$, we show when $k>1$ $$\Pr(ξ_k> (1+η)\E ξ_k) < \exp [-\gO_{η,k} \min\{n^2p^{k-1}\log(1/p), n^kp^{\binom{k}{2}}\}].$$ This is tight up to the value of the constant in the exponent.
Let $i(r,g)$ denote the infimum of the ratio $\frac{α(G)}{|V(G)|}$ over the $r$-regular graphs of girth at least $g$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$, and let $i(r,\infty) := \lim\limits_{g \to \infty} i(r,g)$. Recently, several new lower bounds of $i(3,\infty)$ were obtained. In particular, Hoppen and Wormald showed in 2015 that $i(3, \infty) \ge 0.4375$, and Csóka improved it to $i(3,\infty) \ge 0.44533$ in 2016. Bollobás proved the upper bound $i(3,\infty) < \frac{6}{13}$ in 1981, and McKay improved it to $i(3,\infty) < 0.45537$ in 1987. There were no improvements since then.…
In this paper, we obtain two spectral upper bounds for the $k$-independence number of a graph which is is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$. We construct graphs that attain equality for our first bound and show that our second bound compares favorably to previous bounds on the $k$-independence number.
We extend upper bounds on the quantum independence number and the quantum Shannon capacity of graphs to their counterparts in the commuting operator model. We introduce a von Neumann algebraic generalization of the fractional Haemers bound (over $\mathbb{C}$) and prove that the generalization upper bounds the commuting quantum independence number. We call our bound the tracial Haemers bound, and we prove that it is multiplicative with respect to the strong product. In particular, this makes it an upper bound on the Shannon capacity. The tracial Haemers bound is incomparable with the Lovász the…
An edge-colored connected graph $G$ is properly connected if between every pair of distinct vertices, there exists a path that no two adjacent edges have a same color. Fujita (2019) introduced the optimal proper connection number ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ for a monochromatic connected graph $G$, to make a connected graph properly connected efficiently. More precisely, ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ is the smallest integer $p+q$ when one converts a given monochromatic graph $G$ into a properly connected graph by recoloring $p$ edges with $q$ colors. In this paper, we show that ${\mat…
An $r$-graph $G$ is a pair $(V,E)$ such that $V$ is a set and $E$ is a family of $r$-element subsets of $V$. The \emph{independence number} $α(G)$ of $G$ is the size of a largest subset $I$ of $V$ such that no member of $E$ is a subset of $I$. The \emph{transversal number} $τ(G)$ of $G$ is the size of a smallest subset $T$ of $V$ that intersects each member of $E$. $G$ is said to be \emph{connected} if for every distinct $v$ and $w$ in $V$ there exists a \emph{path} from $v$ to $w$ (that is, a sequence $e_1, \dots, e_p$ of members of $E$ such that $v \in e_1$, $w \in e_p$, and if $p \geq 2$, t…
The upper tail problem in a random graph asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of some fixed subgraph in an Erdős--Rényi random graph exceeds its expectation by some constant factor. There has been much exciting recent progress on this problem. We study the corresponding problem for hypergraphs, for which less is known about the large deviation rate. We present new phenomena in upper tail large deviations for sparse random hypergraphs that are not seen in random graphs. We conjecture a formula for the large deviation rate, i.e., the first order asymptotics of the log-proba…
For a $Δ$-regular connected graph ${\sf H}$ the problem of determining the upper tail large deviation for the number of copies of ${\sf H}$ in $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$, an Erdős-Rényi graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$, has generated significant interests. For $p\ll 1$ and $np^{Δ/2} \gg (\log n)^{1/(v_{\sf H}-2)}$, where $v_{\sf H}$ is the number of vertices in ${\sf H}$, the upper tail large deviation event is believed to occur due to the presence of localized structures. In this regime the large deviation event that the number of copies of ${\sf H}$ in $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$ exceeds its exp…
In the late 1990s, Kim and Vu pioneered an inductive method for showing concentration of certain random variables X. Shortly afterwards, Janson and Ruci{ń}ski developed an alternative inductive approach, which often gives comparable results for the upper tail Pr(X \ge (1+\eps) E[X]). In some cases, both methods yield upper tail estimates which are best possible up to a logarithmic factor in the exponent, but closing this narrow gap has remained a technical challenge. In this paper we present a BK-inequality based combinatorial sparsification idea that can recover this missing logarithmic term …
We study the upper tail of the number of arithmetic progressions of a given length in a random subset of {1,...,n}, establishing exponential bounds which are best possible up to constant factors in the exponent. The proof also extends to Schur triples, and, more generally, to the number of edges in random induced subhypergraphs of `almost linear' k-uniform hypergraphs.
A theorem of Hoffman gives an upper bound on the independence ratio of regular graphs in terms of the minimum $λ_{\min}$ of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix. To complement this result we use random eigenvectors to gain lower bounds in the vertex-transitive case. For example, we prove that the independence ratio of a $3$-regular transitive graph is at least \[q=\frac{1}{2}-\frac{3}{4π}\arccos\biggl(\frac{1-λ_{\min}}{4}\biggr).\] The same bound holds for infinite transitive graphs: we construct factor of i.i.d. independent sets for which the probability that any given vertex is in the set is…
Given a sequence of $s$-uniform hypergraphs $\{H_n\}_{n \geq 1}$, denote by $T_p(H_n)$ the number of edges in the random induced hypergraph obtained by including every vertex in $H_n$ independently with probability $p \in (0, 1)$. Recent advances in the large deviations of low complexity non-linear functions of independent Bernoulli variables can be used to show that tail probabilities of $T_p(H_n)$ are precisely approximated by the so-called 'mean-field' variational problem, under certain assumptions on the sequence $\{H_n\}_{n \geq 1}$. In this paper, we study properties of this variational …
The Birkhoff graph $\mathcal{B}_n$ is the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_n$, where two permutations are adjacent if they differ by a single cycle. Our main result is a tighter upper bound on the independence number $α(\mathcal{B}_n)$ of $\mathcal{B}_n$, namely, we show that $α(\mathcal{B}_n) \le O(n!/1.97^n)$ improving on the previous known bound of $α(\mathcal{B}_n) \le O(n!/\sqrt{2}^{n})$ by [Kane-Lovett-Rao, FOCS 2017]. Our approach combines a higher-order version of their representation theoretic techniques with linear programming. With an explicit construction, we also improve the…
We introduce a procedure, called the Degree Sequence Index Strategy (DSI), by which to bound graph invariants by certain indices in the ordered degree sequence. As an illustration of the DSI strategy, we show how it can be used to give new upper and lower bounds on the $k$-independence and the $k$-domination numbers. These include, among other things, a double generalization of the annihilation number, a recently introduced upper bound on the independence number. Next, we use the DSI strategy in conjunction with planarity, to generalize some results of Caro and Roddity about independence numbe…
The $k$-independence number of a graph, $α_k(G)$, is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$, or alternatively, the independence number of the $k$-th power graph $G^k$. Although it is known that $α_k(G)=α(G^k)$, this, in general, does not hold for most graph products, and thus the existing bounds for $α$ of graph products cannot be used. In this paper we present sharp upper bounds for the $k$-independence number of several graph products. In particular, we focus on the Cartesian, tensor, strong, and lexicographic products. Some of the bounds previously known…
While useful probability bounds for $n$ pairwise independent Bernoulli random variables adding up to at least an integer $k$ have been proposed in the literature, none of these bounds are tight in general. In this paper, we provide several results in this direction. Firstly, when $k = 1$, the tightest upper bound on the probability of the union of $n$ pairwise independent events is provided in closed-form for any input marginal probability vector $\mathbf{p} \in [0,1]^n$. To prove the result, we show the existence of a positively correlated Bernoulli random vector with transformed bivariate pr…
A 2-hued coloring of a graph $G$ (also known as conditional $(k, 2)$-coloring and dynamic coloring) is a coloring such that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$ of degree at least $2$, the neighbors of $v$ receive at least $2$ colors. The smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ has a 2-hued coloring with $ k $ colors, is called the {\it 2-hued chromatic number} of $G$ and denoted by $χ_2(G)$. In this paper, we will show that if $G$ is a regular graph, then $ χ_{2}(G)- χ(G) \leq 2 \log _{2}(α(G)) +\mathcal{O}(1) $ and if $G$ is a graph and $δ(G)\geq 2$, then $ χ_{2}(G)- χ(G) \leq 1+\lceil \sqrt[δ-1]{4Δ^{2}}…
Let $N$ be the number of triangles in an Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathcal{G}(n,p)$ on $n$ vertices with edge density $p=d/n,$ where $d>0$ is a fixed constant. It is well known that $N$ weakly converges to the Poisson distribution with mean ${d^3}/{6}$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. We address the upper tail problem for $N,$ namely, we investigate how fast $k$ must grow, so that the probability of $\{N\ge k\}$ is not well approximated anymore by the tail of the corresponding Poisson variable. Proving that the tail exhibits a sharp phase transition, we essentially show that the upper tail is governed by P…
In 1992, Kalai and Kleitman proved a quasipolynomial upper bound on the diameters of convex polyhedra. Todd and Sukegawa-Kitahara proved tail-quasipolynomial bounds on the diameters of polyhedra. These tail bounds apply when the number of facets is greater than a certain function of the dimension. We prove tail-quasipolynomial bounds on the diameters of polytopes and normal simplicial complexes. We also prove tail-polynomial upper bounds on the diameters of polyhedra.
The annihilation number $a(G)$ of a graph $G$ is an efficiently computable upper bound on the independence number $α(G)$ of $G$. Recently, Hiller observed that a characterization of the graphs $G$ with $α(G)=a(G)$ due to Larson and Pepper is false. Since the known efficient algorithm recognizing these graphs was based on this characterization, the complexity of recognizing graphs $G$ with $α(G)=a(G)$ was once again open. We show that these graphs can indeed be recognized efficiently. More generally, we show that recognizing graphs $G$ with $α(G)\geq a(G)-\ell$ is fixed parameter tractable usin…
A distance graph is an undirected graph on the integers where two integers are adjacent if their difference is in a prescribed distance set. The independence ratio of a distance graph $G$ is the maximum density of an independent set in $G$. Lih, Liu, and Zhu [Star extremal circulant graphs, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 12 (1999) 491--499] showed that the independence ratio is equal to the inverse of the fractional chromatic number, thus relating the concept to the well studied question of finding the chromatic number of distance graphs. We prove that the independence ratio of a distance graph is ach…
Determining the size of a maximum independent set of a graph $G$, denoted by $α(G)$, is an NP-hard problem. Therefore, many attempts are made to find upper and lower bounds, or exact values of $α(G)$ for special classes of graphs. This paper is aimed toward studying this problem for the class of generalized Petersen graphs. We find new upper and lower bounds and some exact values for $α(P(n,k))$. With a computer program we have obtained exact values for each $n<78$. In \cite{MR2381433} it is conjectured that $β(P(n, k)) \leq n + \lceil\frac{n}{5}\rceil $, for all $n$ and $k$. We prove this con…
What is the probability that a sparse $n$-vertex random $d$-regular graph $G_n^d$, $n^{1-c}<d=o(n)$ contains many more copies of a fixed graph $K$ than expected? We determine the behavior of this upper tail to within a logarithmic gap in the exponent. For most graphs $K$ (for instance, for any $K$ of average degree greater than $4$) we determine the upper tail up to a $1+o(1)$ factor in the exponent. However, we also provide an example of a graph, given by adding an edge to $K_{2,4}$, where the upper tail probability behaves differently from previously studied behavior in both the sparse rando…
The \emph{regular independence number}, introduced by Albertson and Boutin in 1990, is the maximum cardinality of an independent set of $G$ in which all vertices have equal degree in $G$. Recently, Caro, Hansberg and Pepper introduced the concept of regular $k$-independence number, which is a natural generalization of the regular independence number. A \emph{$k$-independent set} is a set of vertices whose induced subgraph has maximum degree at most $k$. The \emph{regular $k$-independence number} of $G$, denoted by $α_{k-reg}(G)$, is defined as the maximum cardinality of a $k$-independent set o…
This paper examines bounds on upper tails for cycle counts in $G_{n,p}$. For a fixed graph $H$ define $ξ_H= ξ_H^{n,p}$ to be the number of copies of $H$ in $G_{n,p}$. It is a much studied and surprisingly difficult problem to understand the upper tail of the distribution of $ξ_H$, for example, to estimate \begin{equation*} \mathbb{P}(ξ_H > 2 \mathbb{E}ξ_H). \end{equation*} The best known result for general $H$ and $p$ is due to Janson, Oleszkiewicz, and Ruciński, who, in 2004, proved \begin{align}\label{a:JOR} \exp[-O_{H, η}(M_H(n,p) \ln(1/p))]&<\mathbb{P}(ξ_H > (1+η)\mathbb{E} ξ_H)\\&<\exp[-Ω…
A broadcast on a nontrivial connected graph G is a function f from the vertices of G to the non-negative integers such that f(v) does not exceed e(v) (the eccentricity of v) for each vertex v. If G is disconnected, we define a broadcast on G as the union of broadcasts on its components. In a search for the best way to generalise the concept of independent sets in graphs to independent broadcasts, there are several ways to look at an independent set X of a graph G. One way is from the point of view of the vertices in X: no two vertices are adjacent -- the usual definition. Another way is from t…
Let $G$ be an edge-colored connected graph. A path of $G$ is called rainbow if its every edge is colored by a distinct color. $G$ is called rainbow connected if there exists a rainbow path between every two vertices of $G$. The minimum number of colors that are needed to make $G$ rainbow connected is called the rainbow connection number of $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the rainbow connection number and the independence number of a graph. We show that if $G$ is a connected graph, then $rc(G)\leq 2α(G)-1$. Two examples $G$ are given to show that the …
A broadcast on a nontrivial connected graph G is a function f from V(G) to the set {0,1,...,diam(G)} such that f(v) is at most the eccentricity of v for all vertices v of G. The weight of f is the sum of the function values over V(G). A vertex u hears f from v if f(v) is positive and u is within distance f(v) from v. A broadcast f is boundary independent if any vertex that hears f from two or more vertices is at distance f(v) from each such vertex v. The maximum weight of a boundary independent broadcast on G is denoted by α_{bn}(G). We prove a sharp lower bound on α_{bn}(T) for a tree T. Comb…
The size of a largest independent set of vertices in a given graph $G$ is denoted by $α(G)$ and is called its independence number (or stability number). Given a graph $G$ and an integer $K,$ it is NP-complete to decide whether $α(G) \geq K.$ An upper bound for the independence number $α(G)$ of a given graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and $m $ edges is given by $α(G) \leq p:=\lfloor\frac{1}{2} + \sqrt{\frac{1}{4} + n^2 - n - 2m}\rfloor.$ In this paper we will consider maximum independent sets near this upper bound. Our main result is the following: There exists an algorithm with time complexity $O(n…
