For the random walk among random conductances, we prove that the environment viewed by the particle converges to equilibrium polynomially fast in the variance sense, our main hypothesis being that the conductances are bounded away from zero. The basis of our method is the establishment of a Nash inequality, followed either by a comparison with the simple random walk or by a more direct analysis based on a martingale decomposition. As an example of application, we show that under certain conditions, our results imply an estimate of the speed of convergence of the mean square displacement of the walk towards its limit.
Lower bounds for variances are often needed to derive central limit theorems. In this paper, we establish a lower bound for the variance of Poisson functionals that uses the difference operator of Malliavin calculus. Poisson functionals, i.e. random variables that depend on a Poisson process, are frequently studied in stochastic geometry. We apply our lower variance bound to statistics of spatial random graphs, the $L^p$ surface area of random polytopes and the volume of excursion sets of Poisson shot noise processes. Thereby we do not only bound variances from below but also show positive def…
This paper deals with the union set of a stationary Poisson process of cylinders in $\mathbb{R}^n$ having an $(n-m)$-dimensional base and an $m$-dimensional direction space, where $m\in\{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}$ and $n\geq 2$. The concept simultaneously generalises those of a Boolean model and a Poisson hyperplane or $m$-flat process. Under very general conditions on the typical cylinder base a Berry-Esseen bound for the volume of the union set within a sequence of growing test sets is derived. Assuming convexity of the cylinder bases and of the window a similar result is shown for a broad class of g…
Distributionally robust optimization (DRO) is a widely used framework for optimizing objective functionals in the presence of both randomness and model-form uncertainty. A key step in the practical solution of many DRO problems is a tractable reformulation of the optimization over the chosen model ambiguity set, which is generally infinite dimensional. Previous works have solved this problem in the case where the objective functional is an expected value. In this paper we study objective functionals that are the sum of an expected value and a variance penalty term. We prove that the correspond…
In \cite{MPU} a functional CLT was obtained for triangular arrays satisfying the Lindeberg condition, that the sum of the individual variances is at most the same order as the variance of the underlying sum, and under the optimal mixing rats $\sum_{n}ρ(2^n)<\infty$, where $ρ(\cdot)$ are the $ρ$-mixing coefficients of the array. In this paper we will present alternative conditions which do not involve the assumption on the sum of variances, and instead we will assume certain maximal moment assumptions (which we can verify for $ϕ$-mixing arrays) and mixing rates of the form $\sum_nρ(e^{G(n)})<\i…
This article presents a complete second order theory for a large class of geometric functionals on homogeneous Poisson input. In particular, the results don't require the existence of a radius of stabilisation. Hence they can be applied to geometric functionals of spatial shot-noise fields excursions such as volume, perimeter, or Euler characteristic (the method still applies to stabilising functionals). More generally, it must be checked that a local contribution to the functional is not strongly affected under a perturbation of the input far away. In this case the exact asymptotic variance i…
For Sinaï's walk (X_k) we show that the empirical measure of the environment seen from the particle (\bar\w_k) converges in law to some random measure S. This limit measure is explicitly given in terms of the infinite valley, which construction goes back to Golosov. As a consequence an "in law" ergodic theorem holds for additive functionals of (\bar\w_k) . When the limit in this "in law" ergodic theorem is deterministic, it holds in probability. This allows some extensions to the recurrent case of the ballistic "environment's method" dating back to Kozlov and Molchanov. In particular, we show …
Using the renewal approach we prove Bernstein-like inequalities for additive functionals of geometrically ergodic Markov chains, thus obtaining counterparts of inequalities for sums of independent random variables. The coefficient in the sub-Gaussian part of our estimate is the asymptotic variance of the additive functional, i.e. the variance of the limiting Gaussian variable in the Central Limit Theorem for Markov chains. This refines earlier results by R. Adamczak and W. Bednorz, which were obtained under the additional assumption of strong aperiodicity of the chain.
In this paper we propose a novel variance reduction approach for additive functionals of Markov chains based on minimization of an estimate for the asymptotic variance of these functionals over suitable classes of control variates. A distinctive feature of the proposed approach is its ability to significantly reduce the overall finite sample variance. This feature is theoretically demonstrated by means of a deep non asymptotic analysis of a variance reduced functional as well as by a thorough simulation study. In particular we apply our method to various MCMC Bayesian estimation problems where…
We prove a quenched functional central limit theorem for a one-dimensional random walk driven by a simple symmetric exclusion process. This model can be viewed as a special case of the random walk in a balanced random environment, for which the weak quenched limit is constructed as a function of the invariant measure of the environment viewed from the walk. We bypass the need to show the existence of this invariant measure. Instead, we find the limit of the quadratic variation of the walk and give an explicit formula for it.
In this paper we derive sharp lower and upper bounds for the covariance of two bounded random variables when knowledge about their expected values, variances or both is available. When only the expected values are known, our result can be viewed as an extension of the Bhatia-Davis Inequality for variances. We also provide a number of different ways to standardize covariance. For a binary pair random variables, one of these standardized measures of covariation agrees with a frequently used measure of dependence between genetic variants.
Let K be a convex set in R d and let K $λ$ be the convex hull of a homogeneous Poisson point process P $λ$ of intensity $λ$ on K. When K is a simple polytope, we establish scaling limits as $λ$ $\rightarrow$ $\infty$ for the boundary of K $λ$ in a vicinity of a vertex of K and we give variance asymptotics for the volume and k-face functional of K $λ$, k $\in$ {0, 1, ..., d -- 1}, resolving an open question posed in [18]. The scaling limit of the boundary of K $λ$ and the variance asymptotics are described in terms of a germ-grain model consisting of cone-like grains pinned to the extreme point…
Although there doesn't exist the Lebesgue measure in the ball $M$ of $C[0,1]$ with $p-$norm, the average values (expectation) $EY$ and variance $DY$ of some functionals $Y$ on $M$ can still be defined through the procedure of limitation from finite dimension to infinite dimension. In particular, the probability densities of coordinates of points in the ball $M$ exist and are derived out even though the density of points in $M$ doesn't exist. These densities include high order normal distribution, high order exponent distribution. This also can be considered as the geometrical origins of these …
We study random graphs with latent geometric structure, where the probability of each edge depends on the underlying random positions corresponding to the two endpoints. We focus on the setting where this conditional probability is a general monotone increasing function of the inner product of two vectors; such a function can naturally be viewed as the cumulative distribution function of some independent random variable. We consider a one-parameter family of random graphs, characterized by the variance of this random variable, that smoothly interpolates between a random dot product graph and a…
