Two time scale stochastic approximation algorithms emulate singularly perturbed deterministic differential equations in a certain limiting sense, i.e., the interpolated iterates on each time scale approach certain differential equations in the large time limit when viewed on the `algorithmic time scale' defined by the corresponding step sizes viewed as time steps. Their fluctuations around these deterministic limits, after suitable scaling, can be shown to converge to a Gauss-Markov process in law for each time scale. This turns out to be a linear diffusion for the faster iterates and an ordinary differential equation for the slower iterates.
This paper derives non-central asymptotic results for non-linear integral functionals of homogeneous isotropic Gaussian random fields defined on hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We obtain the rate of convergence for these functionals. The results extend recent findings for solid figures. We apply the obtained results to the case of sojourn measures and demonstrate different limit situations.
Let $(X_i,i\geq 1)$ be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables with values in $[0,1]$, and $f$ be a function such that $`E(f(X_1)^2)<+\infty$. We show a functional central limit theorem for the process $t\mapsto \sum_{i=1}^n f(X_i)1_{X_i\leq t}$.
We establish a functional central limit theorem for Ripley's K-function for two classes of point processes. One is the class of point processes having exponential decay of correlations and further satisfying a conditional m-dependence condition. The other is a family of Gibbs point processes. We illustrate the use of our theorem for goodness-of-fit tests in simulations.
The approximation of integral type functionals is studied for discrete observations of a continuous Itô semimartingale. Based on novel approximations in the Fourier domain, central limit theorems are proved for $L^2$-Sobolev functions with fractional smoothness. An explicit $L^2$-lower bound shows that already lower order quadrature rules, such as the trapezoidal rule and the classical Riemann estimator, are rate optimal, but only the trapezoidal rule is efficient, achieving the minimal asymptotic variance.
In this paper, we provide a central limit theorem for the finite-dimensional marginal distributions of empirical processes $(Z_n(f))_{f\in\mathcal{F}}$ whose index set $\mathcal{F}$ is a family of cluster functionals valued on blocks of values of a stationary random field. The practicality and applicability of the result depends mainly on the usual Lindeberg condition and a sequence $T_n$ which summarizes the dependence between the blocks of the random field values. Finally, as application, we use the previous result in order to show the Gaussian asymptotic behavior of the iso-extremogram esti…
We obtain Central Limit Theorems in Functional form for a class of time-inhomogeneous interacting random walks on the simplex of probability measures over a finite set. Due to a reinforcement mechanism, the increments of the walks are correlated, forcing their convergence to the same, possibly random, limit. Random walks of this form have been introduced in the context of urn models and in stochastic approximation. We also propose an application to opinion dynamics in a random network evolving via preferential attachment. We study, in particular, random walks interacting through a mean-field r…
We provide a functional central limit theorem for a broad class of smooth functions for possibly noncausal multivariate linear processes with time-varying coefficients. Since the limiting processes depend on unknown quantities, we propose a local block bootstrap procedure to circumvent this inconvenience in practical applications. In particular, we prove bootstrap validity for a very broad class of processes. Our results are illustrated by some numerical examples.
For a joint model-based and design-based inference, we establish functional central limit theorems for the Horvitz-Thompson empirical process and the Hájek empirical process centered by their finite population mean as well as by their super-population mean in a survey sampling framework. The results apply to single-stage unequal probability sampling designs and essentially only require conditions on higher order correlations. We apply our main results to a Hadamard differentiable statistical functional and illustrate its limit behavior by means of a computer simulation.
We obtain the empirical strong law of large numbers, empirical Glivenko-Cantelli theorem, central limit theorem, functional central limit theorem for various nonparametric Bayesian priors which include the Dirichlet process with general stick-breaking weights, the Poisson-Dirichlet process, the normalized inverse Gaussian process, the normalized generalized gamma process, and the generalized Dirichlet process. For the Dirichlet process with general stick-breaking weights, we introduce two general conditions such that the central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem hold. Except i…
We study functional central limit theorems for persistent Betti numbers obtained from networks defined on a Poisson point process. The limit is formed in large volumes of cylindrical shape stretching only in one dimension. The results cover a directed sublevel-filtration for stabilizing networks and the Cech and Vietoris-Rips complex on the random geometric graph. The presented functional central limit theorems open the door to a variety of statistical applications in topological data analysis and we consider goodness-of-fit tests in a simulation study.
This paper provides refined versions of some known functional central limit theorems for conditional Poisson sampling which are more suitable for applications. The theorems presented in this paper are generalizations of some results that have been recently published by \citet*{Bertail_2017}. The asymptotic equicontinuity part of the proofs presented in this paper is based on the same idea as in \citep{Bertail_2017} but some of the missing details are provided. On the way to the functional central limit theorems, this paper provides a detailed discussion of what must be done in order to prove c…
We analyse the asymptotic properties of a continuous-time, two-timescale stochastic approximation algorithm designed for stochastic bilevel optimisation problems in continuous-time models. We obtain the weak convergence rate of this algorithm in the form of a central limit theorem. We also demonstrate how this algorithm can be applied to several continuous-time bilevel optimisation problems.
We derive process limit distribution results for the Nelson-Aalen estimator of a hasard function and for the Kaplan-Meier estimator of a distribution function, under different dependence assumptions. The data are assumed to be right censored observations of a stationary time series. We treat weakly dependent as well as long range dependent data, and allow for qualitative differences in the dependence for the censoring times versus the time of interest
This article establishes an asymptotic theory for volatility estimation in an infinite-dimensional setting. We consider mild solutions of semilinear stochastic partial differential equations and derive a stable central limit theorem for the semigroup adjusted realised covariation (SARCV), which is a consistent estimator of the integrated volatility and a generalisation of the realised quadratic covariation to Hilbert spaces. Moreover, we introduce semigroup adjusted multipower variations (SAMPV) and establish their weak law of large numbers; using SAMPV, we construct a consistent estimator of …
We investigate a specific infinite urn scheme first considered by Karlin (1967). We prove functional central limit theorems for the total number of urns with at least k balls for different k.
We prove a central limit theorem for functionals of two independent $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motions with the same Hurst index $H$ in $(\frac{2}{d+1},\frac{2}{d})$ using the method of moments.
The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes. The central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation by Zhang (2019). In this paper, we consider the multi-dimensional martingale like random vectors and establish a functional central limit theorem. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem for independent random vectors is established, and the sufficient and necessary conditions of the central limit theorem for independent…
In this paper we study the almost sure central limit theorem started from a point for additive functionals of a stationary and ergodic Markov chain via a martingale approximation in the almost sure sense. As a consequence we derive the quenched CLT for additive functionals or reversible Markov chains.
We prove a central limit theorem for an additive functional of the $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(\frac{1}{2+d},\frac{1}{d})$, using the method of moments, extending the result by Papanicolaou, Stroock and Varadhan in the case of the standard Brownian motion.
We study the infinite urn scheme when the balls are sequentially distributed over an infinite number of urns labelled 1,2,... so that the urn $j$ at every draw gets a ball with probability $p_j$, $\sum_j p_j=1$. We prove functional central limit theorems for discrete time and the poissonised version for the urn occupancies process, for the odd-occupancy and for the missing mass processes extending the known non-functional central limit theorems.
In this paper, we establish some functional central limit theorems for a large class of general supercritical superprocesses with spatially dependent branching mechanisms satisfying a second moment condition. In the particular case when the state $E$ is a finite set and the underline motion is an irreducible Markov chain on $E$, our results are superprocess analogs of the functional central limit theorems of \cite{Janson} for supercritical multitype branching processes. The results of this paper are refinements of the central limit theorems in \cite{RSZ3}.
When the underlying random variables are Gaussian, the classical Central Limit Theorem (CLT) is trivial, but the functional CLT is not. The objective of the paper is to investigate the functional CLT for stationary Gaussian processes in the Wasserstein-1 metric on the space of continuous functions. Matching upper and lower bounds are established, indicating that the convergence rate is slightly faster than in the Lévy-Prokhorov metric.
The central limit theorem is, with the strong law of large numbers, one of the two fundamental limit theorems in probability theory. Benjamin Jourdain and Alvin Tse have extended to non-linear functionals of the empirical measure of independent and identically distributed random vectors the central limit theorem which is well known for linear functionals. The main tool permitting this extension is the linear functional derivative, one of the notions of derivation on the Wasserstein space of probability measures that have recently been developed. The purpose of this work is to generalize what h…
We prove a functional central limit theorem for integrals $\int_W f(X(t))\, dt$, where $(X(t))_{t\in\mathbb{R}^d}$ is a stationary mixing random field and the stochastic process is indexed by the function $f$, as the integration domain $W$ grows in Van Hove-sense. We discuss properties of the covariance function of the asymptotic Gaussian process.
Using the regenerative scheme of Comets, Fernández and Ferrari (2002), we establish a functional central limit theorem (FCLT) for discrete time stochastic processes (chains) with summable memory decay. Furthermore, under stronger assumptions on the memory decay, we identify the limiting variance in terms of the process only. As applications, we define classes of binary autoregressive processes and power-law Ising chains for which the FCLT is fulfilled.
This paper develops central limit theorems (CLT's) and large deviations results for additive functionals associated with reflecting diffusions in which the functional may include a term associated with the cumulative amount of boundary reflection that has occurred. Extending the known central limit and large deviations theory for Markov processes to include additive functionals that incorporate boundary reflection is important in many applications settings in which reflecting diffusions arise, including queueing theory and economics. In particular, the paper establishes the partial differentia…
We present normal approximation results at the process level for local functionals defined on dynamic Poisson processes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The dynamics we study here are those of a Markov birth-death process. We prove functional limit theorems in the so-called thermodynamic regime. Our results are applicable to several functionals of interest in the stochastic geometry literature, including subgraph and component counts in the random geometric graphs.
We prove a functional non-central limit theorem for jump-diffusions with periodic coefficients driven by strictly stable Levy-processes with stability index bigger than one. The limit process turns out to be a strictly stable Levy process with an averaged jump-measure. Unlike in the situation where the diffusion is driven by Brownian motion, there is no drift related enhancement of diffusivity.
We consider a non-nestling random walk in a product random environment. We assume an exponential moment for the step of the walk, uniformly in the environment. We prove an invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) under almost every environment for the centered and diffusively scaled walk. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
The paper establishes a functional version of the Hoeffding combinatorial central limit theorem. First, a pre-limiting Gaussian process approximation is defined, and is shown to be at a distance of the order of the Lyapounov ratio from the original random process. Distance is measured by comparison of expectations of smooth functionals of the processes, and the argument is by way of Stein's method. The pre-limiting process is then shown, under weak conditions, to converge to a Gaussian limit process. The theorem is used to describe the shape of random permutation tableaux.
In this work, we study the normal approximation and almost sure central limit theorems for some functionals of an independent sequence of Rademacher random variables. In particular, we provide a new chain rule that improves the one derived by Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert(2010) and then we deduce the bound on Wasserstein distance for normal approximation using the (discrete) Malliavin-Stein approach. Besides, we are able to give the almost sure central limit theorem for a sequence of random variables inside a fixed Rademacher chaos using the Ibragimov-Lifshits criterion.
We construct an independent increments Gaussian process associated to a class of multicolor urn models. The construction uses random variables from the urn model which are different from the random variables for which central limit theorems are available in the two color case.
The Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for additive functionals of Markov chains is a well known result with a long history. In this paper we present applications to two finite-memory versions of the Elephant Random Walk, solving a problem from arXiv:1812.01915. We also present a derivation of the CLT for additive functionals of finite state Markov chains, which is based on positive recurrence, the CLT for IID sequences and some elementary linear algebra, and which focuses on characterization of the variance.
We introduce a new basic model for independent and identical distributed sequence on the canonical space $(\mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N},\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}))$ via probability kernels with model uncertainty. Thanks to the well-defined upper and lower variances, we obtain a new functional central limit theorem with mean-uncertainty by the means of martingale central limit theorem and stability of stochastic integral in the classical probability theory. Then we extend it from the canonical space to the general sublinear expectation space. The corresponding proofs are purely probabilistic a…
We revisit functional central limit theorems for additive functionals of ergodic Markov diffusion processes. Translated in the language of partial differential equations of evolution, they appear as diffusion limits in the asymptotic analysis of Fokker-Planck type equations. We focus on the square integrable framework, and we provide tractable conditions on the infinitesimal generator, including degenerate or anomalously slow diffusions. We take advantage on recent developments in the study of the trend to the equilibrium of ergodic diffusions. We discuss examples and formulate open problems.
We obtain an elementary invariance principle for multi-dimensional Brownian sheet where the underlying random fields are not necessarily independent or stationary. Possible applications include unit-root tests for spatial as well as panel data models.
We study the large deviation behaviour of $S_n=\sum_{j=1}^n W_jZ_j$, where $(W_j)_{j \in \mathbb N}$ and $(Z_j)_{j \in \mathbb N}$ are sequences of real-valued, independent and identically distributed random variables satisfying certain moment conditions, independent of each other. More precisely, we prove a conditional strong large deviation result and describe the fluctuations of the random rate function through a functional central limit theorem.
We prove a functional central limit theorem for partial sums of symmetric stationary long range dependent heavy tailed infinitely divisible processes with a certain type of negative dependence. Previously only positive dependence could be treated. The negative dependence involves cancellations of the Gaussian second order. This leads to new types of limiting processes involving stable random measures, due to heavy tails, Mittag-Leffler processes, due to long memory, and Brownian motions, due to the Gaussian second order cancellations.
We consider a multidimensional random walk in a product random environment with bounded steps, transience in some spatial direction, and high enough moments on the regeneration time. We prove an invariance principle, or functional central limit theorem, under almost every environment for the diffusively scaled centered walk. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
Quantitative multivariate central limit theorems for general functionals of possibly non-symmetric and non-homogeneous infinite Rademacher sequences are proved by combining discrete Malliavin calculus with the smart path method for normal approximation. In particular, a discrete multivariate second-order Poincaré inequality is developed. As a first application, the normal approximation of vectors of subgraph counting statistics in the Erdős-Rényi random graph is considered. In this context, we further specialize to the normal approximation of vectors of vertex degrees. In a second application …
