We show that for a simple graph $G$, $c'(G)\leqΔ(G)+2$ where $c'(G)$ is the choice index (or edge-list chromatic number) of $G$, and $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$.
As a simple corollary of this result, we show that the total chromatic number $χ_T(G)$ of a simple graph satisfies the inequality $χ_T(G)\leq\ Δ(G)+4$ and the total choice number $c_T(G)$ also satisfies this inequality.
We also relate these bounds to the Hall index and the Hall condition index of a simple graph, and to the total Hall number and the total Hall condition number of a simple graph.
The set of semialgebraic graphs having countable list-chromatic numbers is characterized. Some other related sets of graphs having countable list-chromatic numbers also are.
We give an upper bound on the list chromatic number of a 2-colorable hypergraph which generalizes the bound of Schauz on $k$-partite $k$-uniform hypergraphs. It makes sense for sparse hypergraphs: in particular we show that a $k$-uniform $k$-regular hypergraph has the list chromatic number 2 for $k \geq 4$. Also we obtain both lower and upper bound on the list chromatic number of a complete $s$-uniform 2-colorable hypergraph in the vein of Erd{\H o}s--Rubin--Taylor theorem.
We prove that every triangle-free graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has list chromatic number at most $(1+o(1))\fracΔ{\ln Δ}$. This matches the best-known bound for graphs of girth at least 5. We also provide a new proof that for any $r\geq 4$ every $K_r$-free graph has list-chromatic number at most $200r\frac{Δ\ln\lnΔ}{\lnΔ}$.
Among other results, it is shown that 3-trees are $Δ$-edge-choosable and that graphs of tree-width 3 and maximum degree at least 7 are $Δ$-edge-choosable.
We introduce a notion of color-criticality in the context of chromatic-choosability. We define a graph $G$ to be strong $k$-chromatic-choosable if $χ(G) = k$ and every $(k-1)$-assignment for which $G$ is not list-colorable has the property that the lists are the same for all vertices. That is the usual coloring is, in some sense, the obstacle to list-coloring. We prove basic properties of strongly chromatic-choosable graphs such as chromatic-choosability and vertex-criticality, and we construct infinite families of strongly chromatic-choosable graphs. We derive a sufficient condition for the e…
A strong $k$-edge-coloring of a graph G is an edge-coloring with $k$ colors in which every color class is an induced matching. The strong chromatic index of $G$, denoted by $χ'_{s}(G)$, is the minimum $k$ for which $G$ has a strong $k$-edge-coloring. In 1985, Erdős and Nešetřil conjectured that $χ'_{s}(G)\leq\frac{5}{4}Δ(G)^2$, where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. When $G$ is a graph with maximum degree at most 3, the conjecture was verified independently by Andersen and Horák, Qing, and Trotter. In this paper, we consider the list version of strong edge-coloring. In particular, we show …
Hadwiger's conjecture asserts that every graph without a $K_t$-minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. It is known that the exact version of Hadwiger's conjecture does not extend to list coloring, but it has been conjectured by Kawarabayashi and Mohar (2007) that there exists a constant $c$ such that every graph with no $K_t$-minor has list chromatic number at most $ct$. More specifically, they also conjectured that this holds for $c=\frac{3}{2}$. Refuting the latter conjecture, we show that the maximum list chromatic number of graphs with no $K_t$-minor is at least $(2-o(1))t$, and hence $c \ge 2$ in the…
It was conjectured by Ohba, and proved by Noel, Reed and Wu that $k$-chromatic graphs $G$ with $|V(G)| \le 2k+1$ are chromatic-choosable. This upper bound on $|V(G)|$ is tight: if $k$ is even, then $K_{3 \star (k/2+1), 1 \star (k/2-1)}$ and $K_{4, 2 \star (k-1)}$ are $k$-chromatic graphs with $2 k+2$ vertices that are not chromatic-choosable. It was proved in [arXiv:2201.02060] that these are the only non-$k$-choosable complete $k$-partite graphs with $2k+2$ vertices. For $G =K_{3 \star (k/2+1), 1 \star (k/2-1)}$ or $K_{4, 2 \star (k-1)}$, a bad list assignment of $G$ is a $k$-list assignment …
Ohba has conjectured \cite{ohb} that if the graph $G$ has $2χ(G)+1$ or fewer vertices then the list chromatic number and chromatic number of $G$ are equal. In this paper we prove that this conjecture is asymptotically correct. More precisely we obtain that for any $0<ε<1$, there exist an $n_0=n_0(ε)$ such that the list chromatic number of $G$ equals its chromatic number, provided $$n_0 \leq |V(G) | \le (2-ε)χ(G).$$
DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring introduced recently by Dvořák and Postle. Many known upper bounds for the list-chromatic number extend to the DP-chromatic number, but not all of them do. In this note we describe some unusual properties of DP-coloring that set it aside from list coloring. In particular, we give an example of a planar bipartite graph with DP-chromatic number $4$ and prove that the edge-DP-chromatic number of a $d$-regular graph with $d\geq 2$ is always at least $d+1$.
The square $G^2$ of a graph $G$ is the graph defined on $V(G)$ such that two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent in $G^2$ if the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is at most 2. Let $χ(H)$ and $χ_{\ell}(H)$ be the chromatic number and the list chromatic number of $H$, respectively. A graph $H$ is called {\em chromatic-choosable} if $χ_{\ell} (H) = χ(H)$. It is an interesting problem to find graphs that are chromatic-choosable. Motivated by the List Total Coloring Conjecture, Kostochka and Woodall (2001) proposed the List Square Coloring Conjecture which states that $G^2$ is chromatic-choosable …
For any $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with $m$ ($\geq 2$) edges, let $P(\mathcal{H},k)$ and $P_l(\mathcal{H},k)$ be the chromatic polynomial and the list-color function of $\mathcal{H}$ respectively, and let $ρ(\mathcal{H})$ denote the minimum value of $|e\setminus e'|$ among all pairs of distinct edges $e,e'$ in $\mathcal{H}$. We will show that if $r\ge3$, $ρ(\mathcal{H})\ge 2$ and $m\ge \frac{ρ(\mathcal{H})^3}2+1$, then $P_l(\mathcal{H},k)=P(\mathcal{H},k)$ holds for all integers $k\geq \frac{2.4(m-1)}{ρ(\mathcal{H})\log(m-1)}$.
We study the class of simple graphs $\mathcal{G}^*$ for which every pair of distinct odd cycles intersect in at most one edge. We give a structural characterization of the graphs in $\mathcal{G}^*$ and prove that every $G \in \mathcal{G}^*$ satisfies the list-edge-coloring conjecture. When $Δ(G) \geq 4$, we in fact prove a stronger result about kernel-perfect orientations in $L(G)$ which implies that $G$ is $(mΔ(G):m)$-edge-choosable and $Δ(G)$-edge-paintable for every $m \geq 1$.
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring recently introduced by Dvořák and Postle. Several known bounds for the list chromatic number of a graph $G$, $χ_\ell(G)$, also hold for the DP-chromatic number of $G$, $χ_{DP}(G)$. On the other hand, there are several properties of the DP-chromatic number that shows that it differs with the list chromatic number. In this note we show one such property. It is well known that $χ_\ell (K_{k,t}) = k+1$ if and only if $t \geq k^k$. We show that $χ_{DP} (K_{k,t}) = k+1$ if $t \geq 1 + (k^k/k!)(\log(k!)+1)$, and we…
A {\em strong edge coloring} of a graph is a proper edge coloring in which every color class is an induced matching. The {\em strong chromatic index} of a graph is the minimum number of colors needed to obtain a strong edge coloring. In an analogous way, we can define the list version of strong edge coloring and list version of strong chromatic index. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a graph with maximum degree at most four and maximum average degree less than $3$, then the list strong chromatic index is at most $3Δ+ 1$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $G$. In addition, we prove that …
A star $k$-edge coloring is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic paths or cycles of length four. The smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a star $k$-edge coloring is the star chromatic index of $G$. Deng \etal \cite{MR2933839}, and Bezegov{á} \etal \cite{MR3431294} independently proved that the star chromatic index of a tree is at most $\lfloor \frac{3Δ}{2} \rfloor$, and the bound is sharp. Han \etal \cite{MR3924408} strengthened the result to list version of star chromatic index, and proved that $\lfloor \frac{3Δ}{2} \rfloor$ is also the sharp upper bound for the lis…
The square $G^2$ of a graph $G$ is the graph defined on $V(G)$ such that two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent in $G^2$ if the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is at most 2. Let $χ(H)$ and $χ_l(H)$ be the chromatic number and the list chromatic number of $H$, respectively. A graph $H$ is called {\em chromatic-choosable} if $χ_l (H) = χ(H)$. It is an interesting problem to find graphs that are chromatic-choosable. Kostochka and Woodall \cite{KW2001} conjectured that $χ_l(G^2) = χ(G^2)$ for every graph $G$, which is called List Square Coloring Conjecture. In this paper, we give infinitely man…
We say that a vertex colouring $φ$ of a graph $G$ is nonrepetitive if there is no positive integer $n$ and a path on $2n$ vertices $v_{1}\ldots v_{2n}$ in $G$ such that the associated sequence of colours $φ(v_{1})\ldotsφ(v_{2n})$ satisfy $φ(v_{i})=φ(v_{i+n})$ for all $i=1,2,\dots,n$. The minimum number of colours in a nonrepetitive vertex colouring of $G$ is the Thue chromatic number $π(G)$. For the case of vertex list colourings the Thue choice number $π_{l}(G)$ of $G$ denotes the smallest integer $k$ such that for every list assignment $L:V(G)\rightarrow 2^{\mathbb{N}}$ with minimum list len…
We prove that the list chromatic index of a graph of maximum degree $Δ$ and treewidth $\leq \sqrt{2Δ} -3$ is $Δ$; and that the total chromatic number of a graph of maximum degree $Δ$ and treewidth $\leq Δ/3 +1$ is $Δ+1$. This improves results by Meeks and Scott.
Alon proved that for any graph $G$, $χ_\ell(G) = Ω(\ln d)$, where $χ_\ell(G)$ is the list chromatic number of $G$ and $d$ is the average degree of $G$. Dvořák and Postle recently introduced a generalization of list coloring, which they called correspondence coloring. We establish an analogue of Alon's result for correspondence coloring; namely, we show that $χ_c(G) = Ω(d/\ln d)$, where $χ_c(G)$ denotes the correspondence chromatic number of $G$. We also prove that for triangle-free $G$, $χ_c(G) = O(Δ/\ln Δ)$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $G$ (this is a generalization of Johansson's resul…

{\emph A star edge-coloring} of a graph is a proper edge-coloring without bichromatic paths and cycles of length four. In this paper, we consider the list version of this coloring and prove that the list star chromatic index of every subcubic graph is at most $7$, answering the question of Dvořák et al. (Star chromatic index, J. Graph Theory 72 (2013), 313--326).
DP-coloring is a generalization of list coloring introduced recently by Dvořák and Postle. We prove that for every $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose chromatic number $χ(G)$ is "close" to $n$, the DP-chromatic number of $G$ equals $χ(G)$. "Close" here means $χ(G)\geq n-O(\sqrt{n})$, and we also show that this lower bound is best possible (up to the constant factor in front of $\sqrt{n}$), in contrast to the case of list coloring.
We prove that for a line perfect multigraph the chromatic index is equal to the list chromatic index. This is a generalization of Galvin's result on bipartite multigraphs. Soon after the first version was submitted to arxiv, I found out that the same result has already been achieved in an older paper by Peterson and Woodall, by a similar but not entirely the same method.
Resolving a problem raised by Norin, we show that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists an $f(k) \le 7k$ such that every graph $G$ with chromatic number at least $f(k)+1$ contains a subgraph $H$ with both connectivity and chromatic number at least $k$. This result is best-possible up to multiplicative constants, and sharpens earlier results of Alon-Kleitman-Thomassen-Saks-Seymour from 1987 showing that $f(k) = O(k^3)$, and of Chudnovsky-Penev-Scott-Trotignon from 2013 showing that $f(k) = O(k^2)$. Our methods are robust enough to handle list colouring as well: we also show that for each $k…
As starting point, we formulate a corollary to the Quantitative Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. This corollary does not require the consideration of any coefficients of polynomials, only evaluations of polynomial functions. In certain situations, our corollary is more directly applicable and more ready-to-go than the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz itself. It is also of interest from a numerical point of view. We use it to explain a well-known connection between the sign of 1-factorizations (edge colorings) and the List Edge Coloring Conjecture. For efficient calculations and a better understandi…
The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the least number $k$ such that the vertex set of $D$ can be partitioned into $k$ parts each of which induces an acyclic subdigraph. Introduced by Neumann-Lara in 1982, this digraph invariant shares many properties with the usual chromatic number of graphs and can be seen as the natural analog of the graph chromatic number. In this paper, we study the list dichromatic number of digraphs, giving evidence that this notion generalizes the list chromatic number of graphs. We first prove that the list dichromatic number and the dichromatic number…
In 1977, Wegner conjectured that the chromatic number of the square of every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge8$ is at most $\bigl\lfloor\frac32Δ\bigr\rfloor+1$. We show that it is at most $\frac32 Δ(1+o(1))$ (where the $o(1)$ is as $Δ\to+\infty$), and indeed that this is true for the list chromatic number and for more general classes of graphs.
DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring that has been widely studied in recent years after its introduction by Dvořák and Postle in 2015. The chromatic polynomial of a graph is an extensively studied notion in combinatorics since its introduction by Birkhoff in 1912; denoted $P(G,m)$, it equals the number of proper $m$-colorings of graph $G$. Counting function analogues of the chromatic polynomial have been introduced and studied for list colorings: $P_{\ell}$, the list color function (1990); DP colorings: $P_{DP}$, the DP color function (2019), a…
The total dominator total coloring of a graph is a total coloring of the graph such that each object of the graph is adjacent or incident to every object of some color class. The minimum namber of the color classes of a total dominator total coloring of a graph is called the total dominator total chromatic number of the graph. Here, we will find the total dominator chromatic numbers of cycles and paths.
Total dominator total coloring of a graph is a total coloring of the graph such that each object of the graph is adjacent or incident to every object of some color class. The minimum namber of the color classes of a total dominator total coloring of a graph is called the total dominator total chromatic number of the graph. Here, we will find the total dominator chromatic numbers of wheels, complete bipartite graphs and complete graphs.
For every integer $r\ge3$ and every $\eps>0$ we construct a graph with maximum degree $r-1$ whose circular total chromatic number is in the interval $(r,r+\eps)$. This proves that (i) every integer $r\ge3$ is an accumulation point of the set of circular total chromatic numbers of graphs, and (ii) for every $Δ\ge2$, the set of circular total chromatic numbers of graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ is infinite. All these results hold for the set of circular total chromatic numbers of bipartite graphs as well.
We study the list chromatic number of the Cartesian product of any graph $G$ and a complete bipartite graph with partite sets of size $a$ and $b$, denoted $χ_\ell(G \square K_{a,b})$. We have two motivations. A classic result on the gap between list chromatic number and the chromatic number tells us $χ_\ell(K_{a,b}) = 1 + a$ if and only if $b \geq a^a$. Since $χ_\ell(K_{a,b}) \leq 1 + a$ for any $b \in \mathbb{N}$, this result tells us the values of $b$ for which $χ_\ell(K_{a,b})$ is as large as possible and far from $χ(K_{a,b})=2$. In this paper we seek to understand when $χ_\ell(G \square K_…
Let $Σ$ be a signed graph where two edges joining the same pair of vertices with opposite signs are allowed. The zero-free chromatic number $χ^*(Σ)$ of $Σ$ is the minimum even integer $2k$ such that $G$ admits a proper coloring $f\colon\,V(Σ)\mapsto \{\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$. The zero-free list chromatic number $χ^*_l(Σ)$ is the list version of zero-free chromatic number. $Σ$ is called zero-free chromatic-choosable if $χ^*_l(Σ)=χ^*(Σ)$. We show that if $Σ$ has at most $χ^*(Σ)+1$ vertices then $Σ$ is zero-free chromatic-choosable. This result strengthens Noel-Reed-Wu Theorem which states th…
In this paper among some other results and by using the existance of Steiner triple systems, we determine the total dominator chromatic number of the Kneser graph KG(n,2).
Let $G$ be a simple graph. A total dominator coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring of the vertices of $G$ in which each vertex of the graph is adjacent to every vertex of some color class. The total dominator chromatic number $χ_d^t(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of colors among all total dominator coloring of $G$. In this paper, we study the total dominator chromatic number of some specific graphs.
We study the relation between the correspondence chromatic number and the Alon--Tarsi number, both upper bounds on the list chromatic number of a graph. There are many graphs with Alon--Tarsi number greater than the correspondence chromatic number. We present here a family of graphs with arbitrary Alon--Tarsi number, with correspondence chromatic number one larger. Keywords: correspondence coloring, Alon--Tarsi number AMS Mathematics Subject Classification: 05C15
A total dominator coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper coloring of $G$ in which each vertex of the graph is adjacent to every vertex of some color class. The total dominator chromatic number $χ_d^t(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of color classes in a total dominator coloring of it. In [Total dominator chromatic number of a graph, submitted] the author initialed to study this number in graphs and obtained some important results. Here, we continue it in Mycieleskian graphs. We show that the total dominator chromatic number of the Mycieleskian of a graph $G$ belongs to between $χ_d^t(G)+1$ and $…
List packing is a notion that was introduced in 2021 (by Cambie et al.). The list packing number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_{\ell}^*(G)$, is the least $k$ such that for any list assignment $L$ that assigns $k$ colors to each vertex of $G$, there is a set of $k$ proper $L$-colorings of $G$, $\{f_1, \ldots, f_k \}$, with the property $f_i(v) \neq f_j(v)$ whenever $1 \leq i < j \leq k$ and $v \in V(G)$. We present a short proof that for any graph $G$, $χ_{\ell}^*(G) \leq |V(G)|$. Interestingly, our proof makes use of Galvin's celebrated result that the list chromatic number of the line graph of a…
The $k$th power $G^k$ of a graph $G$ is the graph defined on $V(G)$ such that two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent in $G^k$ if the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is at most $k$. A natural question raised by Xuding Zhu (2012) is whether there exists a constant integer $k$ such that $G^k$ is chromatic-choosable for every graph $G$. Motivated by the Li…
Let $G=(V(G), E(G))$ be a multigraph with maximum degree $Δ(G)$, chromatic index $χ'(G)$ and total chromatic number $χ''(G)$. The Total Coloring conjecture proposed by Behzad and Vizing, independently, states that $χ''(G)\leq Δ(G)+μ(G) +1$ for a multigraph $G$, where $μ(G)$ is the multiplicity of $G$. Moreover, Goldberg conjectured that $χ''(G)=χ'(G)$ if $χ'(G)\geq Δ(G)+3$ and noticed the conjecture holds when $G$ is an edge-chromatic critical graph. By assuming the Goldberg-Seymour conjecture, we show that $χ''(G)=χ'(G)$ if $χ'(G)\geq \max\{ Δ(G)+2, |V(G)|+1\}$ in this note. Consequently, $χ'…
Let $G$ be a simple graph. A total dominator coloring of $G$, is a proper coloring of the vertices of $G$ in which each vertex of the graph is adjacent to every vertex of some color class. The total dominator chromatic (TDC) number $χ_d^t(G)$ of $G$, is the minimum number of colors among all total dominator coloring of $G$. For any $k \in \mathbb{N}$, the $k$-subdivision of $G$ is a simple graph $G^{\frac{1}{k}}$ which is constructed by replacing each edge of $G$ with a path of length $k$. In this paper, we study the total dominator chromatic number of $k$-subdivision of $G$.
