The general position number ${\rm gp}(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is the cardinality of a largest set $S$ of vertices such that no three pairwise distinct vertices from $S$ lie on a common geodesic. The $n$-dimensional grid graph $\pn$ is the Cartesian product of $n$ copies of the two-way infinite path $P_\infty$. It is proved that if $n\in {\mathbb N}$, then ${\rm gp}({P_\infty^n}) = 2^{2^{n-1}}$. The result was earlier known only for $n\in \{1,2\}$ and partially for $n=3$.
For a positive integer $n$, let $[n]$ denote $\{1, \ldots, n\}$. For a 2-dimensional integer lattice point $\mathbf{b}$ and positive integers $k\geq 2$ and $n$, a \textit{$k$-sum $\mathbf{b}$-free set} of $[n]\times [n]$ is a subset $S$ of $[n]\times [n]$ such that there are no elements ${\mathbf{a}}_1, \ldots, {\mathbf{a}}_k$ in $S$ satisfying ${\mathbf{a}}_1+\cdots+{\mathbf{a}}_k =\mathbf{b}$. For a 2-dimensional integer lattice point $\mathbf{b}$ and positive integers $k\geq 2$ and $n$, we determine the maximum density of a {$k$-sum $\mathbf{b}$-free set} of $[n]\times [n]$. This is the fir…
In this paper we investigate the number of integer points lying in dilations of lattice path matroid polytopes. We give a characterization of such points as polygonal paths in the diagram of the lattice path matroid. Furthermore, we prove that lattice path matroid polytopes are affinely equivalent to a family of distributive polytopes. As applications we obtain two new infinite families of matroids verifying a conjecture of De Loera et.~al. and present an explicit formula of the Ehrhart polynomial for one of them.
We show that the Voronoi cells of the lattice of integer flows of a finite connected graph $G$ in the quadratic vector space of real valued flows have the following very precise combinatorics: the face poset of a Voronoi cell is isomorphic to the poset of strongly connected orientations of subgraphs of $G$. This confirms a conjecture of Caporaso and Viviani {Torelli Theorem For Graphs and Tropical Curves, Duke Math. J. 153(1) (2010), 129-171}.
The edge isoperimetric problem for a graph $G$ is to determine, for each $n$, the minimum number of edges leaving any set of $n$ vertices. In general this problem is NP-hard, but exact solutions are known in some special cases, for example when $G$ is the usual integer lattice. We solve the edge isoperimetric problem asymptotically for every Cayley graph on $\mathbb Z^d$. The near-optimal shapes that we exhibit are zonotopes generated by line segments corresponding to the generators of the Cayley graph.
The two strictly projective tight 5-designs are the lines spanned by the short vectors of the Leech lattice and a set of points in the octonion projective plane that define a generalized hexagon of order (2,8). A previous paper introduced a common construction that can generate these two tight 5-designs. This paper describes the same construction in terms of octonion arithmetic. An octonion integer construction of the Leech lattice is described using properties of the octonion integers taken modulo 2. The Leech lattice automorphism group is constructed from octonion reflections. The common con…
We determine the shape of all sum-free sets in $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}^2$ of size close to the maximum $\frac{3}{5}n^2$, solving a problem of Elsholtz and Rackham. We show that all such asymptotic maximum sum-free sets lie completely in the stripe $\frac{4}{5}n-o(n)\le x+y\le\frac{8}{5}n+ o(n)$. We also determine for any positive integer $p$ the maximum size of a subset $A\subseteq \{1,2,\ldots,n\}^2$ which forbids the triple $(x,y,z)$ satisfying $px+py=z$.
In 1935, Erdős and Szekeres proved that every set of $n$ points in general position in the plane contains the vertices of a convex polygon of $\frac{1}{2}\log_2(n)$ vertices. In 1961, they constructed, for every positive integer $t$, a set of $n:=2^{t-2}$ points in general position in the plane, such that every convex polygon with vertices in this set has at most $\log_2(n)+1$ vertices. In this paper we show how to realize their construction in an integer grid of size $O(n^2 \log_2(n)^3)$.
A standard proof of Schur's Theorem yields that any $r$-coloring of $\{1,2,\dots,R_r-1\}$ yields a monochromatic solution to $x+y=z$, where $R_r$ is the classical $r$-color Ramsey number, the minimum $N$ such that any $r$-coloring of a complete graph on $N$ vertices yields a monochromatic triangle. We explore generalizations and modifications of this result in higher dimensional integer lattices, showing in particular that if $k\geq d+1$, then any $r$-coloring of $\{1,2,\dots,R_r(k)^d-1\}^d$ yields a monochromatic solution to $x_1+\cdots+x_{k-1}=x_k$ with $\{x_1,\dots,x_d\}$ linearly independe…
When $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is represented as a finite disjoint union of translated integer sublattices, the translated sublattices must possess some special properties. Such a representation is called a \emph{lattice tiling}. We develop a theoretical framework, based on multiple residues and dual groups, to provide a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for such a lattice tiling to exist. We also investigate the question of when a lattice tiling must possess at least two translated sublattices which are translates of one another.
The lattice of integer flows of a graph is known to determine the graph up to 2-isomorphism (work of Su--Wagner and Caporaso--Viviani). In this paper we give an algorithmic construction of the graphic matroid $\calM(G)$ of a graph $G$, given its lattice of integer flows $\calF(G)$. The algorithm can then be applied to compute any other 2-isomorphism invariants (that is, matroid invariants) of $G$ from $\calF(G)$. Our method is based on a result of Amini which describes the relationship between the geometry of the Voronoi cell of $\calF(G)$ and the structure of $G$.
In this paper, we use a simple discrete dynamical model to study integer partitions and their lattice. The set of reachable configurations of the model, with the order induced by the transition rule defined on it, is the lattice of all partitions of an integer, equipped with a dominance ordering. We first explain how this lattice can be constructed by an algorithm in linear time with respect to its size by showing that it has a self-similar structure. Then, we define a natural extension of the model to infinity, which we compare with the Young lattice. Using a self-similar tree, we obtain an e…
It is a surprising fact that the proportion of integer lattice points visible from the origin is exactly $\frac{6}{π^2}$, or approximately 60 percent. Hence, approximately 40 percent of the integer lattice is hidden from the origin. Since 1971, many have studied a variety of problems involving lattice point visibility, in particular, searching for patterns in that 40 percent of the lattice comprised of invisible points. One such pattern is a square patch, an $n \times n$ grid of $n^2$ invisible points, which we call a hidden forest. It is known that there exist arbitrarily large hidden forests…
Given two nonempty subsets $A, B$ of a group $G$, they are said to form a co-minimal pair if $A \cdot B = G$, and $A' \cdot B \subsetneq G$ for any $\emptyset \neq A' \subsetneq A$ and $A\cdot B' \subsetneq G$ for any $\emptyset \neq B' \subsetneq B$. In this article, we show several new results on co-minimal pairs in the integers and the integral lattices. We prove that for any $d\geq 1$, the group $\mathbb{Z}^{2d}$ admits infinitely many automorphisms such that for each such automorphism $σ$, there exists a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}^{2d}$ such that $A$ and $σ(A)$ form a co-minimal pair. The …
Chinta, Jorgenson and Karlsson introduced a generalized version of the determinant formula for the Ihara zeta function associated to finite or infinite regular graphs. On the other hand, Konno and Sato obtained a formula of the characteristic polynomial of the Grover matrix by using the determinant expression for the second weighted zeta function of a finite graph. In this paper, we focus on a relationship between the Grover walk and the generalized Ihara zeta function. That is to say, we treat the generalized Ihara zeta function of the one-dimensional integer lattice as a limit of the Ihara z…
We provide a homological algebraic realization of the lattices of integer cuts and integer flows of graphs. To a finite 2-edge-connected graph $Γ$ with a spanning tree $T$, we associate a finite dimensional Koszul algebra $A_{Γ,T}$. Under the construction, planar dual graphs with dual spanning trees are associated Koszul dual algebras. The Grothendieck group of the category of finitely-generated $A_{Γ,T}$ modules is isomorphic to the Euclidean lattice $\mathbb Z^{E(Γ)}$, and we describe the sublattices of integer cuts and integer flows on $Γ$ in terms of the representation theory of $A_{Γ,T}$.…
A lattice polytope $P$ is called IDP if any lattice point in its $k$th dilate is a sum of $k$ lattice points in $P$. In 1991 Stanley proved a strong inequality in Ehrhart theory for IDP lattice polytopes. We show that his conclusion holds under much milder assumptions, namely if the lattice polytope $P$ is spanning, i.e., any lattice point of the ambient lattice is an integer affine combination of lattice points in $P$. As an application, we get a generalization of Hibi's Lower Bound Theorem. Our proof relies on generalizing Bertini's theorem to the semistandard situation and Harris' Uniform P…
A long-standing open conjecture in combinatorics asserts that a Gorenstein lattice polytope with the integer decomposition property (IDP) has a unimodal (Ehrhart) $h^\ast$-polynomial. This conjecture can be viewed as a strengthening of a previously disproved conjecture which stated that any Gorenstein lattice polytope has a unimodal $h^\ast$-polynomial. The first counterexamples to unimodality for Gorenstein lattice polytopes were given in even dimensions greater than five by Musta{ţ}{ǎ} and Payne, and this was extended to all dimensions greater than five by Payne. While there exist numerous e…
