We prove that for any fixed d the generating function of the projection of the set of integer points in a rational d-dimensional polytope can be computed in polynomial time. As a corollary, we deduce that various interesting sets of lattice points, notably integer semigroups and (minimal) Hilbert bases of rational cones, have short rational generating functions provided certain parameters (the dimension and the number of generators) are fixed. It follows then that many computational problems for such sets (for example, finding the number of positive integers not representable as a non-negative integer combination of given coprime positive integers a_1 ... a_d admit polynomial time algorithms. We also discuss a related problem of computing the Hilbert series of a ring generated by monomials.
In this paper, we study the generating function of cyclically fully commutative elements in Coxeter groups, which are elements such that any cyclic shift of theirs reduced decompositions remains a reduced expression of a fully commutative element. By designing a finite state automaton recognizing reduced expressions of cyclically fully commutative elements, we can show that the aforementioned generating series is always rational.
We consider the set of affine permutations that avoid a fixed permutation pattern. Crites has given a simple characterization for when this set is infinite. We find the generating series for this set using the Coxeter length statistic and prove that it can always be represented as a rational function. We also give a characterization of the patterns for which the coefficients of the generating series are periodic. The proofs exploit a new polyhedral encoding for the affine symmetric group.
In this paper we give a generalization created by the author of the theory of rook polynomials and permanents of circulants, Toeplits matrices and their submatrices.
A. We look at multidimensional random walks (Sn) n 0 in convex cones, and address the question of whether two naturally associated generating functions may define rational functions. The first series is the one of the survival probabilities P($τ$ > n), where $τ$ is the first exit time from a given cone; the second series is that of the excursion probabilities P($τ$ > n, Sn = y). Our motivation to consider this question is twofold: first, it goes along with a global effort of the combinatorial community to classify the algebraic nature of the series counting random walks in cones; second, ratio…
We discuss and give elementary proofs of results of Brion and of Lawrence-Varchenko on the lattice-point enumerator generating functions for polytopes and cones. This largely expository note contains a new proof of Brion's Formula using irrational decompositions, and a generalization of the Lawrence-Varchenko formula.
We describe rational knots with any of the possible combinations of the properties (a)chirality, (non-)positivity, (non-)fiberedness, and unknotting number one (or higher), and determine exactly their number for a given number of crossings in terms of their generating functions. We show in particular how Fibonacci numbers occur in the enumeration of fibered achiral and unknotting number one rational knots. Then we show how to enumerate rational knots by crossing number and genus and/or signature. This allows to determine the distribution of these invariants among rational knots. We give also a…
Let $F(x)=\sum\limits_{n=1}^\inftyτ(n)x^n$ be the generating function for the number $τ(n)$ of spanning trees in the circulant graphs $C_{n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k).$ We show that $F(x)$ is a rational function with integer coefficients satisfying the property $F(x)=F(1/x).$ A similar result is also true for the circulant graphs of odd valency $C_{2n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k,n).$ We illustrate the obtained results by a series of examples.
Let $c_n$ denote the number of nodes at a distance $n$ from the root of a rooted tree. A criterion for proving the rationality and computing the rational generating function of the sequence $\{c_n\}$ is described. This criterion is applied to counting the number of conjugacy classes of commuting tuples in finite groups and the number of isomorphism classes of representations of polynomial algebras over finite fields. The method for computing the rational generating functions, when applied to the study of point configurations in finite sets, gives rise to some classical combinatorial results on…
Algorithms for computing rational generating functions of solutions of one-dimensional difference equations are well-known and easy to implement. We propose an algorithm for computing rational generating functions of solutions of two-dimensional difference equations in terms of initial data of the corresponding initial value problems. The crucial part of the algorithm is the reconstruction of infinite one-dimensional initial data on the basis of finite input data. The proposed technique can be used for the development of similar algorithms in higher dimensions. We furnish examples of the imple…
Computations with Barvinok's short rational generating functions are traditionally being performed in the dual space, to avoid the combinatorial complexity of inclusion--exclusion formulas for the intersecting proper faces of cones. We prove that, on the level of indicator functions of polyhedra, there is no need for using inclusion--exclusion formulas to account for boundary effects: All linear identities in the space of indicator functions can be purely expressed using half-open variants of the full-dimensional polyhedra in the identity. This gives rise to a practically efficient, parametric…
We examine two different ways of encoding a counting function, as a rational generating function and explicitly as a function (defined piecewise using the greatest integer function). We prove that, if the degree and number of input variables of the (quasi-polynomial) function are fixed, there is a polynomial time algorithm which converts between the two representations. Examples of such counting functions include Ehrhart quasi-polynomials, vector partition functions, integer points in parametric polytopes, and projections of the integer points in parametric polytopes. For this last example, th…
Presburger arithmetic is the first-order theory of the natural numbers with addition (but no multiplication). We characterize sets that can be defined by a Presburger formula as exactly the sets whose characteristic functions can be represented by rational generating functions; a geometric characterization of such sets is also given. In addition, if p=(p_1,...,p_n) are a subset of the free variables in a Presburger formula, we can define a counting function g(p) to be the number of solutions to the formula, for a given p. We show that every counting function obtained in this way may be represe…
We explore the computational complexity of computing pure Nash equilibria for a new class of strategic games called integer programming games with difference of piecewise linear convex payoffs. Integer programming games are games where players' action sets are integer points inside of polytopes. Using recent results from the study of short rational generating functions for encoding sets of integer points pioneered by Alexander Barvinok, we present efficient algorithms for enumerating all pure Nash equilibria, and other computations of interest, such as the pure price of anarchy, and pure threa…
Let $I_n(x)=\prod_{i=1}^n \left( 1+x^{F_{i+1}}\right)$, where $F_{i+1}$ denotes a Fibonacci number. Let $v_r(n)$ denote the sum of the $r$th powers of the coefficients of $I_n(x)$. Our prototypical result is that $\sum_{n\geq 0} v_2(n)x^n= (1-2x^2)/(1-2x-2x^2+2x^3)$. We give many related results and conjectures. A certain infinite poset $\mathfrak{F}$ is naturally associated with $I_n(x)$. We discuss some combinatorial properties of $\mathfrak{F}$ and a natural generalization, including a symmetric function that encodes the flag $h$-vector of $\mathfrak{F}$.
We show that the generating function corresponding to the sequence of denominators of the best rational approximants of a quadratic irrational is a rational function with integer coefficients. Consequently we can compute the Lévy constant of any quadratic irrational explicitly in terms of a finite number of its convergents.
We give new proofs of three theorems of Stanley on generating functions for the integer points in rational cones. The first, Stanley's reciprocity theorem, relates the rational generating functions for the integer points in a cone K and for those in its interior. The second, Stanley's Positivity theorem asserts that the generating function of the Ehrhart quasipolynomial of a rational polytope P can be written as a rational function with nonnegative numerator. The third, Stanley's Monotonicity Theorem, asserts that if a polytope Q contains P, then each coefficient in the numerator for Q is at l…
In this paper, we study a family of generating functions whose coefficients are polynomials that enumerate partitions in lower order ideals of Young's lattice. Our main result is that this family satisfies a rational recursion and are therefore rational functions. As an application, we calculate the asymptotic behavior of the cardinality of lower order ideals for the ``average" partition of fixed length and give a homological interpretation of this result in relation to Grassmannians and their Schubert varieties.
We present a strategy for computing asymptotics of coefficients of $d$-variate algebraic generating functions. Using known constructions, we embed the coefficient array into an array represented by a rational generating functions in $d+1$ variables, and then apply ACSV theory to analyse the latter. This method allows us to give systematic results in the multivariate case, seems more promising than trying to derive analogs of the rational ACSV theory for algebraic GFs, and gives the prospect of further improvements as embedding methods are studied in more detail.
We show that the lattice games of Guo and Miller support universal computation, disproving their conjecture that all lattice games have rational strategies. We also state an explicit counterexample to that conjecture: a three dimensional lattice game whose set of winning positions does not have a rational generating function.
The main theme of this dissertation is the study of the lattice points in a rational convex polyhedron and their encoding in terms of Barvinok's short rational functions. The first part of this thesis looks into theoretical applications of these rational functions to Optimization, Statistics, and Computational Algebra. The main theorem on Chapter 2 concerns the computation of the \emph{toric ideal} $I_A$ of an integral $n \times d$ matrix $A$. We encode the binomials belonging to the toric ideal $I_A$ associated with $A$ using Barvinok's rational functions. If we fix $d$ and $n$, this represen…
A triangular field of rational numbers is characterized, with relations to Stirling numbers 2nd, Hyperbolic functions, and centered Binomial distribution. A Generating function is given.
Generating functions for a fixed genus map and hypermap enumeration become rational after a simple explicit change of variables. Their numerators are polynomials with integer coefficients that obey a differential recursion, and denominators are products of powers of explicit linear functions.
Given two relatively prime positive integers $α$ and $β$, we consider simple lattice paths (with unit East and unit North steps) from $(0,0)$ to $(αk,βk)$, and enumerate them by their left and right bounces with respect to the line $y=\fracβα x$. We give the corresponding multivariate generating functions for all such paths as well as for subclasses of paths that start and end with a prescribed step. For illustration purposes, we discuss the case $β=1$ and express some of our functions in terms of the Fuss-Catalan generating function $c_α(x)$.
We investigate multi-graded Gorenstein semigroup algebras associated with an infinite family of reflexive lattice simplices. For each of these algebras, we prove that their multigraded Poincaré series is rational. Our method of proof is to produce for each algebra an explicit minimal free resolution of the ground field, in which the resolution reflects the recursive structure encoded in the denominator of the finely-graded Poincaré series. Using this resolution, we show that these algebras are not Koszul, and therefore rationality is non-trivial. Our results demonstrate how interactions betwee…
Geometric grid classes and the substitution decomposition have both been shown to be fundamental in the understanding of the structure of permutation classes. In particular, these are the two main tools in the recent classification of permutation classes of growth rate less than $κ\approx2.20557$ (a specific algebraic integer at which infinite antichains begin to appear). Using language- and order-theoretic methods, we prove that the substitution closures of geometric grid classes are partially well-ordered, finitely based, and that all their subclasses have algebraic generating functions. We …
We prove that for any fixed $n$, and for most permutation patterns $q$, the number $\textup{Av}_{n,\ell}(q)$ of $q$-avoiding permutations of length $n$ that consist of $\ell$ skew blocks is a monotone decreasing function of $\ell$. We then show that this implies that for most patterns $q$, the generating function $\sum_{n\geq 0} \textup{Av}_n(q)z^n$ of the sequence $\textup{Av}_n(q)$ of the numbers of $q$-avoiding permutations is not rational. Placing our results in a broader context, we show that for rational power series $F(z)$ and $G(z)$ with nonnegative real coefficients, the relation $F(z…
A vector is \emph{dyadic} if each of its entries is a dyadic rational number, i.e. of the form $\frac{a}{2^k}$ for some integers $a,k$ with $k\geq 0$. A linear system $Ax\leq b$ with integral data is \emph{totally dual dyadic} if whenever $\min\{b^\top y:A^\top y=w,y\geq {\bf 0}\}$ for $w$ integral, has an optimal solution, it has a dyadic optimal solution. In this paper, we study total dual dyadicness, and give a co-NP characterization of it in terms of \emph{dyadic generating sets for cones and subspaces}, the former being the dyadic analogue of \emph{Hilbert bases}, and the latter a polynom…
We encode the binomials belonging to the toric ideal $I_A$ associated with an integral $d \times n$ matrix $A$ using a short sum of rational functions as introduced by Barvinok \cite{bar,newbar}. Under the assumption that $d,n$ are fixed, this representation allows us to compute the Graver basis and the reduced Gröbner basis of the ideal $I_A$, with respect to any term order, in time polynomial in the size of the input. We also derive a polynomial time algorithm for normal form computation which replaces in this new encoding the usual reductions typical of the division algorithm. We describe o…
Weighted constellations give graphical representations of weighted branched coverings of the Riemann sphere. They were introduced to provide a combinatorial interpretation of the $2$D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type serving as generating functions for weighted Hurwitz numbers in the case of polynomial weight generating functions. The product over all vertex and edge weights of a given weighted constellation, summed over all configurations, reproduces the $τ$-function. In the present work, this is generalized to constellations in which the weighting parameters are determined by a rati…
The exponential generating functions of {n^(n+m)} for arbitrary integer m are expressed as rational functions of the e.g.f. of {n^(n-1)} [the tree function] and then of the e.g.f. of {n^n} [the endofunction function]. The coefficients in these rational functions include 2nd-order Eulerian numbers (a result of L. Carlitz), 2nd-order Stirling numbers, and Stirling numbers of the first kind for negative sets (in the sense of D. Loeb). Several combinatorial identities follow.
Convolutions for Tribonacci numbers involving binomial coefficients are treated with ordinary generating functions and the diagonalization method of Hautus and Klarner. In this way, the relevant generating function can be established, which is rational. The coefficients can also be expressed. It is sketched how to extend this to Tetranacci numbers and similar quantities.
This paper develops a deeper understanding of the structure and combinatorial significance of the partition function for Hermitian random matrices. The coefficients of the large N expansion of the logarithm of this partition function, also known as the genus expansion, (and its derivatives) are generating functions for a variety of graphical enumeration problems. The main results are to prove that these generating functions are in fact specific rational functions of a distinguished irrational (algebraic) function of the generating function parameters. This distinguished function is itself the g…
Let $P$ be a partially ordered set and consider the free monoid $P^*$ of all words over $P$. If $w,w'\in P^*$ then $w'$ is a factor of $w$ if there are words $u,v$ with $w=uw'v$. Define generalized factor order on $P^*$ by letting $u\le w$ if there is a factor $w'$ of $w$ having the same length as $u$ such that $u\le w'$, where the comparison of $u$ and $w'$ is done componentwise using the partial order in $P$. One obtains ordinary factor order by insisting that $u=w'$ or, equivalently, by taking $P$ to be an antichain. Given $u\in P^*$, we prove that the language $\cF(u)=\{w : w\ge u\}$ is ac…
For a PI-algebra R over a field of characteristic 0 let T(R) be the T-ideal of the polynomial identities of R and let c(R,t) be the codimension series of R (i.e., the generating function of the codimension sequence of R). Let A, B and R be PI-algebras such that T(R)=T(A)T(B). We show that if c(A,t) and c(B,t) are rational functions, then c(R,t) is also rational. If c(A,t) is rational and c(B,t) is algebraic, then c(R,t) is also algebraic. The proof is based on the fact that the product of two exponential generating functions behaves as the exponential generating function of the sequence of the…
Multicurrent correlators associated to KP $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type are used as generating functions for weighted Hurwitz numbers. These are expressed as formal Taylor series and used to compute generic, simple, rational and quantum weighted single Hurwitz numbers.
For a fixed dimension $N$ we compute the generating function of the numbers $t_N(n)$ (respectively $\bar{t}_N(n)$) of $PGL_{N+1}(k)$-orbits of rational $n$-sets (respectively rational $n$-multisets) of the projective space $\mathb{P}^N$ over a finite field $k=\mathbb{F}_q$. For $N=1,2$ these results provide concrete formulas for $t_N(n)$ and $\bar{t}_N(n)$ as a polynomial in $q$ with integer coefficients.
We prove a recursion formula for generating functions of certain renormalizations of *-moments of the DT(δ_0,1)-operator T, involving an operation \odot on formal power series and a transformation E that converts \odot to usual multiplication. This recursion formula is used to prove that all of these generating functions are rational functions, and to find a few of them explicitly.
It is shown that the sequence of rational numbers $r(k)$ generated by the ordinary generating function $\prod_{k=1}^\infty (1+x^k/k)$ converges to a limit $C > 0$. $C$ can be expressed as $C = \exp\Bigl(-\sum_{k = 2}^\infty \frac{(-1)^k}{k}\ ζ(k) \Bigr)$ where $ζ()$ denotes the Riemann zeta function.
We give complexity analysis of the class of short generating functions (GF). Assuming $\#P \not\subseteq FP/poly$, we show that this class is not closed under taking many intersections, unions or projections of GFs, in the sense that these operations can increase the bitlength of coefficients of GFs by a super-polynomial factor. We also prove that truncated theta functions are hard in this class.
Braids can be represented geometrically as curve diagrams. The geometric complexity of a braid is the minimal complexity of a curve diagram representing it. We introduce and study the corresponding notion of geometric generating function. We compute explicitly the geometric generating function for the group of braids on three strands and prove that it is neither rational nor algebraic, nor even holonomic. This result may appear as counterintuitive. Indeed, the standard complexity (due to the Artin presentation of braid groups) is algorithmically harder to compute than the geometric complexity,…
We consider weighted small step walks in the positive quadrant, and provide algebraicity and differential transcendence results for the underlying generating functions: we prove that depending on the probabilities of allowed steps, certain of the generating functions are algebraic over the field of rational functions, while some others do not satisfy any algebraic differential equation with rational function coefficients. Our techniques involve differential Galois theory for difference equations as well as complex analysis (Weierstrass parameterization of elliptic curves). We also extend to th…
Let $p_{k}(n)$ be the coefficient of $q^n$ in the series expansion of $(q;q)_{\infty}^{k}$. It is known that the partition function $p(n)$, which corresponds to the case when $k=-1$, satisfies congruences such as $p(5n+4)\equiv 0\pmod{5}$. In this article, we discuss congruences satisfied by $p_{k}(n)$ when $k$ is a rational number.
We study higher-dimensional analogs of the Dedekind-Carlitz polynomials c(u,v;a,b) := sum_{k=1..b-1} u^[ka/b] v^(k-1), where u and v are indeterminates and a and b are positive integers. Carlitz proved that these polynomials satisfy the reciprocity law (v-1) c(u,v;a,b) + (u-1) c(v,u;b,a) = u^(a-1) v^(b-1) - 1, from which one easily deduces many classical reciprocity theorems for the Dedekind sum and its generalizations. We illustrate that Dedekind-Carlitz polynomials appear naturally in generating functions of rational cones and use this fact to give geometric proofs of the Carlitz reciprocity…
Upper homogeneous finite type (upho) posets are a large class of partially ordered sets with the property that the principal order filter at every vertex is isomorphic to the whole poset. Well-known examples include k-array trees, the grid graphs, and the Stern poset. Very little is known about upho posets in general. In this paper, we construct upho posets with Schur-positive Ehrenborg quasisymmetric functions, whose rank-generating functions have rational poles and zeros. We also categorize the rank-generating functions of all planar upho posets. Finally, we prove the existence of an upho po…
