The Hilbert function of a module over a positively graded algebra is of quasi-polynomial type (Hilbert--Serre). We derive an upper bound for its grade, i.e. the index from which on its coefficients are constant. As an application, we give a purely algebraic proof of an old combinatorial result (due to Ehrhart, McMullen and Stanley).
A numerical semigroup $S$ is a subset of the non-negative integers containing $0$ that is closed under addition. The Hilbert series of $S$ (a formal power series equal to the sum of terms $t^n$ over all $n \in S$) can be expressed as a rational function in $t$ whose numerator is characterized in terms of the topology of a simplicial complex determined by membership in $S$. In this paper, we obtain analogous rational expressions for the related power series whose coefficient of $t^n$ equals $f(n)$ for one of several semigroup-theoretic invariants $f:S \to \mathbb R$ known to be eventually quasi…
For $G$ a finite group acting linearly on $\mathbb{A}^2$, the equivariant Hilbert scheme $\operatorname{Hilb}^r[\mathbb{A}^2/G]$ is a natural resolution of singularities of $\operatorname{Sym}^r(\mathbb{A}^2/G)$. In this paper we study the topology of $\operatorname{Hilb}^r[\mathbb{A}^2/G]$ for abelian $G$ and how it depends on the group $G$. We prove that the topological invariants of $\operatorname{Hilb}^r[\mathbb{A}^2/G]$ are periodic or quasipolynomial in the order of the group $G$ as $G$ varies over certain families of abelian subgroups of $GL_2$. This is done by using the Bialynicki-Biru…
We study real sequences $\{a_{n}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ that eventually agree with a polynomial. We show that if the numerator polynomial of its rational generating series is of degree $s$ and has only nonnegative coefficients, then the numerator polynomial of the subsequence $\{ a_{rn+i}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$, $0\leq i<r$, has only nonpositive, real roots for all $r\geq s-i$. We apply our results to combinatorially positive valuations on polytopes and to Hilbert functions of Veronese submodules of graded Cohen-Macaulay algebras. In particular, we prove that the Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomial of the…
Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributio…
The purpose of this note is to study the Maulik-Okounkov $K-$theoretic stable basis for the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane, which depends on a "slope" $m \in \mathbb{R}$. When $m = \frac ab$ is rational, we study the change of stable matrix from slope $m-\varepsilon$ to $m+\varepsilon$ for small $\varepsilon>0$, and conjecture that it is related to the Leclerc-Thibon conjugation in the $q-$Fock space for $U_q\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}_b$. This is part of a wide framework of connections involving derived categories of quantized Hilbert schemes, modules for rational Cherednik algebras and He…
