Mantel's theorem states that every $n$-vertex graph with $\lfloor \frac{n^2}{4} \rfloor +t$ edges, where $t>0$, contains a triangle. The problem of determining the minimum number of triangles in such a graph is usually referred to as the Erdős-Rademacher problem. Lovász and Simonovits proved that there are at least $t\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ triangles in each of those graphs. Katona and Xiao considered the same problem under the additional condition that there are no $s-1$ vertices covering all triangles. They settled the case $t=1$ and $s=2$. Solving their conjecture, we determine the minimum number of triangles for every fixed pair of $s$ and $t$, when $n$ is sufficiently large. Additionally, solving another conjecture of Katona and Xiao, we extend the theory for considering cliques instead of triangles.
The triangle covering number of a graph is the minimum number of vertices that hit all triangles. Given positive integers $s,t$ and an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor +t$ edges and triangle covering number $s$, we determine (for large $n$) sharp bounds on the minimum number of triangles in $G$ and also describe the extremal constructions. Similar results are proved for cliques of larger size and color critical graphs. This extends classical work of Rademacher, Erd\H os, and Lovász-Simonovits whose results apply only to $s \le t$. Our results also address two conjectures of Xia…
What is the minimum number of triangles in a graph of given order and size? Motivated by earlier results of Mantel and Turán, Rademacher solved the first non-trivial case of this problem in 1941. The problem was revived by Erdős in 1955; it is now known as the Erdős-Rademacher problem. After attracting much attention, it was solved asymptotically in a major breakthrough by Razborov in 2008. In this paper, we provide an exact solution for all large graphs whose edge density is bounded away from~$1$, which in this range confirms a conjecture of Lovász and Simonovits from 1975. Furthermore, we gi…
Combining Pósa's rotation lemma with a technique of Kopylov in a novel approach, we prove a generalization of the Erdős-Gallai theorems on cycles and paths. This implies a clique version of the Erdős-Gallai stability theorems and also provides alternative proofs for some recent results.
Delete the edges of a Kneser graph independently of each other with some probability: for what probabilities is the independence number of this random graph equal to the independence number of the Kneser graph itself? We prove a sharp threshold result for this question in certain regimes. Since an independent set in the Kneser graph is the same as a uniform intersecting family, this gives us a random analogue of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem.
A fundamental problem of extremal graph theory is to ask, 'What is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices?' Recently Alon and Shikhelman proposed a more general, subgraph counting, version of this question. They considered the question of determining the maximum number of copies of a fixed graph $T$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. In this more general context, where we are no longer counting edges, it is also natural to ask what is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $F$-free graph with $m$ edges and no restriction on the number of vertices. Frohmader, in …
The Erdős-Gallai Theorem states that every graph of average degree more than $l-2$ contains a path of order $l$ for $l\ge 2$. In this paper, we obtain a stability version of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem in terms of minimum degree. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ and $F=(\bigcup_{i=1}^kP_{2a_i})\bigcup(\bigcup_{i=1}^lP_{2b_i+1})$ be $k+l$ disjoint paths of order $2a_1, \ldots, 2a_{k}, 2b_1+1, \ldots, 2b_l+1,$ respectively, where $k\ge 0$, $0\le l\le 2$, and $k+l\geq 2$. If the minimum degree $δ(G)\ge \sum_{i=1}^ka_i+\sum_{i=1}^lb_i-1$, then $F\subseteq G$ except several classes of graphs …
The famous Erdős-Rademacher problem asks for the smallest number of $r$-cliques in a graph with the given number of vertices and edges. Despite decades of active attempts, the asymptotic value of this extremal function for all $r$ was determined only recently, by Reiher [Annals of Mathematics, 184 (2016) 683--707]. Here we describe the asymptotic structure of all almost extremal graphs. This task for $r=3$ was previously accomplished by Pikhurko and Razborov [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 26 (2017) 138--160].
Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) type theorems yield upper bounds on the sizes of families of sets, subject to various intersection requirements on the sets in the family. Stability versions of such theorems assert that if the size of a family is close to the maximum possible size, then the family itself must be close (in some appropriate sense) to a maximum-sized family. In this paper, we present an approach to obtaining stability versions of EKR-type theorems, via isoperimetric inequalities for subsets of the hypercube. Our approach is rather general, and allows the leveraging of a wide variety of exact …
The Erdős--Gallai Theorem states that for $k \geq 3$, any $n$-vertex graph with no cycle of length at least $k$ has at most $\frac{1}{2}(k-1)(n-1)$ edges. A stronger version of the Erdős--Gallai Theorem was given by Kopylov: If $G$ is a 2-connected $n$-vertex graph with no cycle of length at least $k$, then $e(G) \leq \max\{h(n,k,2),h(n,k,\lfloor \frac{k-1}{2}\rfloor)\}$, where $h(n,k,a) := {k - a \choose 2} + a(n - k + a)$. Furthermore, Kopylov presented the two possible extremal graphs, one with $h(n,k,2)$ edges and one with $h(n,k,\lfloor \frac{k-1}{2}\rfloor)$ edges. In this paper, we comp…
Denote by $K_p(n,k)$ the random subgraph of the usual Kneser graph $K(n,k)$ in which edges appear independently, each with probability $p$. Answering a question of Bollobás, Narayanan, and Raigorodskii,we show that there is a fixed $p<1$ such that a.s. (i.e., with probability tending to 1 as $k \to \infty$) the maximum independent sets of $K_p(2k+1, k)$ are precisely the sets $\{A\in V(K(2k+1,k)): x\in A\}$ ($x\in [2k+1]$). We also complete the determination of the order of magnitude of the "threshold" for the above property for general $k$ and $n\geq 2k+2$. This is new for $k\sim n/2$, while …
Consider classical Kneser's graph $K(n,r)$: for two natural numbers $ r, n $ such that $r \le n / 2$, its vertices are all the subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ of size $r$, and two such vertices are adjacent if the corresponding subsets are disjoint. The Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem states that the size of the largest independent set in this graph is $\binom{n-1}{r-1}$. Now let us delete each edge of the graph $K(n,r)$ with some fixed probability $p$ independently of each other. Quite surprisingly, the independence number of such random subgraph $K_p(n,r)$ of the graph $ K(n,r) $ is, with high pro…
The Erdős-Gallai Theorem states that for $k \geq 2$, every graph of average degree more than $k - 2$ contains a $k$-vertex path. This result is a consequence of a stronger result of Kopylov: if $k$ is odd, $k=2t+1\geq 5$, $n \geq (5t-3)/2$, and $G$ is an $n$-vertex $2$-connected graph with at least $h(n,k,t) := {k-t \choose 2} + t(n -k+ t)$ edges, then $G$ contains a cycle of length at least $k$ unless $G = H_{n,k,t} := K_n - E(K_{n - t})$. In this paper we prove a stability version of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem: we show that for all $n \geq 3t > 3$, and $k \in \{2t+1,2t + 2\}$, every $n$-vertex…
Circle geometries are incidence structures that capture the geometry of circles on spheres, cones and hyperboloids in 3-dimensional space. In a previous paper, the author characterised the largest intersecting families in finite ovoidal circle geometries, except for Möbius planes of odd order. In this paper we show that also in these Möbius planes, if the order is greater than 3, the largest intersecting families are the sets of circles through a fixed point. We show the same result in the only known family of finite non-ovoidal circle geometries. Using the same techniques, we show a stability…
We investigate the asymptotic version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for the random $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}^k(n,p)$. For $2 \leq k(n) \leq n/2$, let $N=\binom{n}k$ and $D=\binom{n-k}k$. We show that with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$, the largest intersecting subhypergraph of $\mathcal{H}^k(n,p)$ has size $(1+o(1))p\frac kn N$, for any $p\gg \frac nk\ln^2\!\left(\frac nk\right)D^{-1}$. This lower bound on $p$ is asymptotically best possible for $k=Θ(n)$. For this range of $k$ and $p$, we are able to show stability as well. A different behavior occurs when $k = o(n)$. In th…
In this paper, a simplified second-order Gaussian Poincaré inequality for normal approximation of functionals over infinitely many Rademacher random variables is derived. It is based on a new bound for the Kolmogorov distance between a general Rademacher functional and a Gaussian random variable, which is established by means of the discrete Malliavin-Stein method and is of independent interest. As an application, the number of vertices with prescribed degree and the subgraph counting statistic in the Erdös-Rényi random graph are discussed. The number of vertices of fixed degree is also studie…

Let $n, d$ be integers with $1 \leq d \leq \left \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \right \rfloor$, and set $h(n,d):={n-d \choose 2} + d^2$ and $e(n,d):= \max\{h(n,d),h(n, \left \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \right \rfloor)\}$. Because $h(n,d)$ is quadratic in $d$, there exists a $d_0(n)=(n/6)+O(1)$ such that $e(n,1)> e(n, 2)> \dots >e(n,d_0)=e(n, d_0+1)=\dots = e(n,\left \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \right \rfloor)$. A theorem by Erdős states that for $d\leq \left \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \right \rfloor$, any $n$-vertex nonhamiltonian graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ(G) \geq d$ has at most $e(n,d)$ edges, and for $d > d_0…
A $k$-uniform family of subsets of $[n]$ is intersecting if it does not contain a disjoint pair of sets. The study of intersecting families is central to extremal set theory, dating back to the seminal Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem of 1961 that bounds the size of the largest such families. A recent trend has been to investigate the structure of set families with few disjoint pairs. Friedgut and Regev proved a general removal lemma, showing that when $γn \le k \le (\tfrac12 - γ)n$, a set family with few disjoint pairs can be made intersecting by removing few sets. We provide a simple proof of a removal…

Turán's Theorem says that an extremal $K_{r+1}$-free graph is $r$-partite. The Stability Theorem of Erdős and Simonovits shows that if a $K_{r+1}$-free graph with $n$ vertices has close to the maximal $t_r(n)$ edges, then it is close to being $r$-partite. In this paper we determine exactly the $K_{r+1}$-free graphs with at least $m$ edges that are farthest from being $r$-partite, for any $m\ge t_r(n) - δ_r n^2$. This extends work by Erdős, Győri and Simonovits, and proves a conjecture of Balogh, Clemen, Lavrov, Lidický and Pfender.
The classical stability theorem of Erdős and Simonovits states that, for any fixed graph with chromatic number $k+1 \ge 3$, the following holds: every $n$-vertex graph that is $H$-free and has within $o(n^2)$ of the maximal possible number of edges can be made into the $k$-partite Turán graph by adding and deleting $o(n^2)$ edges. In this paper, we prove sharper quantitative results for graphs $H$ with a critical edge, both for the Erdős-Simonovits Theorem (distance to the Turán graph) and for the closely related question of how close an $H$-free graph is to being $k$-partite. In many cases, t…
Fifty years ago Erdős asked to determine the minimum number of $k$-cliques in a graph on $n$ vertices with independence number less than l. He conjectured that this minimum is achieved by the disjoint union of $l-1$ complete graphs of size $\frac{n}{l-1}$. This conjecture was disproved by Nikiforov who showed that the balanced blow-up of a 5-cycle has fewer 4-cliques than the union of 2 complete graphs of size $\frac{n}{2}$. In this paper we solve Erdős' problem for $(k,l)=(3,4)$ and $(k,l)=(4,3)$. Using stability arguments we also characterize the precise structure of extremal examples, confi…
Let $F$ be a graph which contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. We prove tight bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a graph with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Our results extend those of Simonovits, who proved that there is one copy of $F$, and of Rademacher, Erd\H os and Lovász-Simonovits, who proved similar counting results when $F$ is a complete graph. One of the simplest cases of our theorem is the following new result. There is an absolute positive constant $c$ such that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $1 \le q < cn$, then every $n$ vertex graph wi…
We extend the classical stability theorem of Erdos and Simonovits in two directions: first, we allow the order of the forbidden graph to grow as log of order of the host graph, and second, our extremal condition is on the spectral radius of the host graph.
In 1968, Erdös and Lovász conjectured that for every graph $G$ and all integers $s,t\geq 2$ such that $s+t-1=χ(G) > ω(G)$, there exists a partition $(S,T)$ of the vertex set of $G$ such that $χ(G|S)\geq s$ and $χ(G|T)\geq t$. For general graphs, the only settled cases of the conjecture are when $s$ and $t$ are small. Recently, the conjecture was proved for a few special classes of graphs: graphs with stability number 2 \cite{quasi-line}, line graphs \cite{line} and quasi-line graphs \cite{quasi-line}. In this paper, we consider the conjecture for claw-free graphs and present some progress on i…
A book of size b in a graph is an edge that lies in b triangles. Consider a graph G with n vertices and \lfloor n^2/4\rfloor +1 edges. Rademacher proved that G contains at least \lfloor n/2\rfloor triangles, and Erdos conjectured and Edwards proved that G contains a book of size at least n/6. We prove the following "linear combination" of these two results. Suppose that α\in (1/2, 1) and the maximum size of a book in G is less than αn/2. Then G contains at least α(1-α) n^2/4 - o(n^2) triangles as n approaches infinity. This is asymptotically sharp. On the other hand, for every α\in (1/3, 1/2),…
In 1969 Erdoes found a lower bound on the number of (r+1)-cliques sharing an edge in graphs with n vertices and t(r,n)+1 edges, where t(r,n) is the size of the Turan graph of order n and r color classes. We improve Erdoes's bound and prove a related stability result.
Let $n, d$ be integers with $1 \leq d \leq \left \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \right \rfloor$, and set $h(n,d):={n-d \choose 2} + d^2$. Erdős proved that when $n \geq 6d$, each nonhamiltonian graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G) \geq d$ has at most $h(n,d)$ edges. He also provides a sharpness example $H_{n,d}$ for all such pairs $n,d$. Previously, we showed a stability version of this result: for $n$ large enough, every nonhamiltonian graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $δ(G) \geq d$ and more than $h(n,d+1)$ edges is a subgraph of $H_{n,d}$. In this paper, we show that not only does the gra…
We consider the following generalization of the seminal Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, due to Frankl. For some k>=2, let F be a k-wise intersecting family of r-subsets of an n element set X, i.e. for any k sets F1,...,Fk in F, their intersection is nonempty. If r <= ((k-1)n)/k, then |F|<= {n-1 \choose r-1}. We prove a stability version of this theorem, analogous to similar results of Dinur-Friedgut, Keevash-Mubayi and others for the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem. The technique we use is a generalization of Katona's circle method, initially employed by Keevash, which uses expansion properties of a particular C…
For a positive integer $n$, a graph $F$ and a bipartite graph $G\subseteq K_{n,n}$ let ${F(n+n, G)}$ denote the number of copies of $F$ in $G$, and let $F(n+n, m)$ denote the minimum number of copies of $F$ in all graphs $G\subseteq K_{n,n}$ with $m$ edges. The study of such a function is the subject of theorems of supersaturated graphs and closely related to the Sidorenko-Erdős-Simonovits conjecture as well. In the present paper we investigate the case when $F= K_{2,t}$ and in particular the quadrilateral graph case. For $F=C_4$, we obtain exact results if $m$ and the corresponding Zarankiewi…
A very nice result of Bárány and Lehel asserts that every finite subset $X$ or $\mathbb R^d$ can be covered by $f(d)$ $X$-boxes (i.e. each box has two antipodal points in $X$). As shown by Gyárfás and Pálvőlgyi this result would follow from the following conjecture : If a tournament admits a partition of its arc set into $k$ quasi orders, then its domination number is bounded in terms of $k$. This question is in turn implied by the Erdős-Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture : If the arcs of a tournament $T$ are colored with $k$ colors, there is a set $X$ of at most $g(k)$ vertices such that for ever…
The matching number of a family of subsets of an $n$-element set is the maximum number of pairwise disjoint sets. The families with matching number $1$ are called intersecting. The famous Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem determines the size of the largest intersecting family of $k$-sets. Its generalization to the families with larger matching numbers, known under the name of the Erdős Matching Conjecture, is still open for a wide range of parameters. In this paper, we address the degree versions of both theorems. More precisely, we give degree and $t$-degree versions of the Erdős-Ko-Rado and the Hilto…
In a seminal paper from 1983, Burr and Erdos started the systematic study of Ramsey numbers of cliques vs. large sparse graphs, raising a number of problems. In this paper we develop a new approach to such Ramsey problems using a mix of the Szemeredi regularity lemma, embedding of sparse graphs, Turan type stability, and other structural results. We give exact Ramsey numbers for various classes of graphs, solving all but one of the Burr-Erdos problems.
In this note, we adapt the Keevash-Sudakov proof of the (Turán) Stability Theorem for the Fano plane to find an explicit dependency between the parameters $\varepsilon$ and $δ$. This is useful in the solution of a multicolored version for hypergraphs of an extremal problem about edge-colorings, known as the Erdős-Rothschild problem, which may be considered for the Fano plane.

The stability method is very useful for obtaining exact solutions of many extremal graph problems. Its key step is to establish the stability property which, roughly speaking, states that any two almost optimal graphs of the same order $n$ can be made isomorphic by changing o(n^2) edges. Here we show how the recently developed theory of graph limits can be used to give an analytic approach to stability. As an application, we present a new proof of the Erdos-Simonovits Stability Theorem. Also, we investigate various properties of the edit distance. In particular, we show that the combinatorial …
Let $\mathbf{k} := (k_1,\dots,k_s)$ be a sequence of natural numbers. For a graph $G$, let $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ denote the number of colourings of the edges of $G$ with colours $1,\dots,s$ such that, for every $c \in \{1,\dots,s\}$, the edges of colour $c$ contain no clique of order $k_c$. Write $F(n;\mathbf{k})$ to denote the maximum of $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices. This problem was first considered by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974, but it has been solved only for a very small number of non-trivial cases. We prove that, for every $\mathbf{k}$ and $n$, there is a complete …
A family of subsets $\mathcal{F}\subseteq {[n]\choose k}$ is called intersecting if any two of its members share a common element. Consider an intersecting family, a direct problem is to determine its maximal size and the inverse problem is to characterize its extremal structure and its corresponding stability. The famous Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem answered both direct and inverse problems and led the era of studying intersection problems for finite sets. In this paper, we consider the following quantitative intersection problem which can be viewed an inverse problem for Erdős-Ko-Rado type theorems…
A family $F$ of sets is said to be $t$-intersecting if $|A \cap B| \geq t$ for any $A,B \in F$. The seminal Complete Intersection Theorem of Ahlswede and Khachatrian (1997) gives the maximal size $f(n,k,t)$ of a $t$-intersecting family of $k$-element subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, together with a characterisation of the extremal families. The forbidden intersection problem, posed by Erdős and Sós in 1971, asks for a determination of the maximal size $g(n,k,t)$ of a family $F$ of $k$-element subsets of $[n]$ such that $|A \cap B| \neq t-1$ for any $A,B \in F$. In this paper, we show that fo…
A celebrated result of Mantel shows that every graph on $n$ vertices with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor + 1$ edges must contain a triangle. A robust version of this result, due to Rademacher, says that there must in fact be at least $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ triangles in any such graph. Another strengthening, due to the combined efforts of many authors starting with Erdős, says that any such graph must have an edge which is contained in at least $n/6$ triangles. Following Mubayi, we study the interplay between these two results, that is, between the number of triangles in such graphs and their book numbe…
The \emph{Turán function} $\ex(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free graph with $n$ vertices. The classical results of Turán and Rademacher from 1941 led to the study of supersaturated graphs where the key question is to determine $h_F(n,q)$, the minimum number of copies of $F$ that a graph with $n$ vertices and $\ex(n,F)+q$ edges can have. We determine $h_F(n,q)$ asymptotically when $F$ is \emph{color-critical} (that is, $F$ contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number) and $q=o(n^2)$. Determining the exact value of $h_F(n,q)$ seems rather difficul…
The families $\mathcal F_1,\ldots, \mathcal F_s\subset 2^{[n]}$ are called $q$-dependent if there are no pairwise disjoint $F_1\in \mathcal F_1,\ldots, F_s\in\mathcal F_s$ satisfying $|F_1\cup\ldots\cup F_s|\le q.$ We determine $\max |\mathcal F_1|+\ldots +|\mathcal F_s| $ for all values $n\ge q,s\ge 2$. The result provides a far-reaching generalization of an important classical result of Kleitman. The well-known Erd\H os Matching Conjecture suggests the largest size of a family $\mathcal F\subset {[n]\choose k}$ with no $s$ pairwise disjoint sets. After more than 50 years its full solution is…
