The triangle covering number of a graph is the minimum number of vertices that hit all triangles. Given positive integers $s,t$ and an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor +t$ edges and triangle covering number $s$, we determine (for large $n$) sharp bounds on the minimum number of triangles in $G$ and also describe the extremal constructions. Similar results are proved for cliques of larger size and color critical graphs.
This extends classical work of Rademacher, Erd\H os, and Lovász-Simonovits whose results apply only to $s \le t$. Our results also address two conjectures of Xiao and Katona. We prove one of them and give a counterexample and prove a modified version of the other conjecture.
Mantel's theorem states that every $n$-vertex graph with $\lfloor \frac{n^2}{4} \rfloor +t$ edges, where $t>0$, contains a triangle. The problem of determining the minimum number of triangles in such a graph is usually referred to as the Erdős-Rademacher problem. Lovász and Simonovits proved that there are at least $t\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ triangles in each of those graphs. Katona and Xiao considered the same problem under the additional condition that there are no $s-1$ vertices covering all triangles. They settled the case $t=1$ and $s=2$. Solving their conjecture, we determine the minimum num…
What is the minimum number of triangles in a graph of given order and size? Motivated by earlier results of Mantel and Turán, Rademacher solved the first non-trivial case of this problem in 1941. The problem was revived by Erdős in 1955; it is now known as the Erdős-Rademacher problem. After attracting much attention, it was solved asymptotically in a major breakthrough by Razborov in 2008. In this paper, we provide an exact solution for all large graphs whose edge density is bounded away from~$1$, which in this range confirms a conjecture of Lovász and Simonovits from 1975. Furthermore, we gi…
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, and $r$ be a multiple of its exponent. The generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant $s_r(G)$ is the smallest integer $s$ such that every sequence of length $s$ over $G$ has a zero-sum subsequence of length $r$. We find exact values of $s_{2m}(\mathbb{Z}_2^d)$ for $d \leq 2m+1$. Connections to linear binary codes of maximal length and codes without a forbidden weight are discussed.
We consider generalized Dedekind sums in dimension $n$, for fixed $n$-tuple of natural numbers, defined as sum of products of values of periodic Bernoulli functions. This includes the higher dimensional Dedekind sums of Zagier and Apostol-Carlitz' generalized Dedekind sums as well as the original Dedekind sums. These are realized as coefficients of Todd series of lattice cones and satisfy reciprocity law from the cocycle property of Todd series. Using iterated residue formula, we compute the coefficient of the decomposition of of the Todd series corresponding to a nonsingular decomposition of …
Alon, Frankl, and Lovász proved a conjecture of Erdős that one needs at least $\lceil \frac{n-r(k-1)}{r-1} \rceil$ colors to color the $k$-subsets of $\{1, \dots, n\}$ such that any $r$ of the $k$-subsets that have the same color are not pairwise disjoint. A generalization of this problem where one requires $s$-wise instead of pairwise intersections was considered by Sarkaria. He claimed a proof of a generalized Erdős--Kneser conjecture establishing a lower bound for the number of colors that reduces to Erdős' original conjecture for ${s = 2}$. Lange and Ziegler pointed out that his proof fail…
The Erdős-Gyárfás number $f(n, p, q)$ is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ so that all of its $p$-clique spans at least $q$ colors. In this paper we improve the best known upper bound on $f(n, p, q)$ for many fixed values of $p, q$ and large $n$. Our proof uses a randomized coloring process, which we analyze using the so-called differential equation method to establish dynamic concentration.
Fix positive integers $p$ and $q$ with $2 \leq q \leq {p \choose 2}$. An edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ is said to be a $(p, q)$-coloring if every $K_p$ receives at least $q$ different colors. The function $f(n, p, q)$ is the minimum number of colors that are needed for $K_n$ to have a $(p,q)$-coloring. This function was introduced by Erdős and Shelah about 40 years ago, but Erdős and Gyárfás were the first to study the function in a systematic way. They proved that $f(n, p, p)$ is polynomial in $n$ and asked to determine the maximum $q$, depending on $p$, for which $f(n,p,q)$ is su…
The famous Erdős-Rademacher problem asks for the smallest number of $r$-cliques in a graph with the given number of vertices and edges. Despite decades of active attempts, the asymptotic value of this extremal function for all $r$ was determined only recently, by Reiher [Annals of Mathematics, 184 (2016) 683--707]. Here we describe the asymptotic structure of all almost extremal graphs. This task for $r=3$ was previously accomplished by Pikhurko and Razborov [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 26 (2017) 138--160].
For a finite abelian group $G$, the generalized Erdős--Ginzburg--Ziv constant $\mathsf s_{k}(G)$ is the smallest $m$ such that a sequence of $m$ elements in $G$ always contains a $k$-element subsequence which sums to zero. If $n = \exp(G)$ is the exponent of $G$, the previously best known bounds for $\mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^r)$ were linear in $n$ and $r$ when $k\ge 2$. Via a probabilistic argument, we produce the exponential lower bound \[ \mathsf s_{2n}(C_n^r) > \frac{n}{2}[1.25 - O(n^{-3/2})]^r \] for $n > 0$. For the general case, we show \[ \mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^r) > \frac{kn}{4}\Big(1+\frac{1}{ek…
The classical Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem states that if $k\le\floor{n/2}$ then the largest family of pairwise intersecting $k$-subsets of $[n]=\{0,1,...,n\}$ is of size ${{n-1}\choose{k-1}}$. A family of $k$ subsets satisfying this pairwise intersecting property is called an EKR family. We generalize the EKR property and provide asymptotic lower bounds on the size of the largest family ${\cal A}$ of $k$-subsets of $[n]$ that satisfies the following property: For each $A,B,C\in{\cal A}$, each of the four sets $A\cap B\cap C;A\cap B\cap C^C; A\cap B^C\cap C; A^C\cap B\cap C$ are non-empty. This ge…
Extending the concept of Ramsey numbers, Erd{\H o}s and Rogers introduced the following function. For given integers $2\le s<t$ let $$ f_{s,t}(n)=\min \{\max \{|W| : W\subseteq V(G) {and} G[W] {contains no} K_s\} \}, $$ where the minimum is taken over all $K_t$-free graphs $G$ of order $n$. In this paper, we show that for every $s\ge 3$ there exist constants $c_1=c_1(s)$ and $c_2=c_2(s)$ such that $f_{s,s+1}(n) \le c_1 (\log n)^{c_2} \sqrt{n}$. This result is best possible up to a polylogarithmic factor. We also show for all $t-2 \geq s \geq 4$, there exists a constant $c_3$ such that $f_{s,t}…
In this paper, a simplified second-order Gaussian Poincaré inequality for normal approximation of functionals over infinitely many Rademacher random variables is derived. It is based on a new bound for the Kolmogorov distance between a general Rademacher functional and a Gaussian random variable, which is established by means of the discrete Malliavin-Stein method and is of independent interest. As an application, the number of vertices with prescribed degree and the subgraph counting statistic in the Erdös-Rényi random graph are discussed. The number of vertices of fixed degree is also studie…
We prove the simultaneous multiplication formulas for Apostol-Bernoulli polynomials and generalized Frobenius-Euler polynomials. These formulas contain Dedekind-Rademacher sums, Apostol-Dedekind sums and Fourier-Dedekind sums.
Erdős proved that there are graphs with arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. We study the extension of this for generalized chromatic numbers.
A $(p,q)$-coloring of a graph $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ which assigns at least $q$ colors to each $p$-clique. The problem of determining the minimum number of colors, $f(n,p,q)$, needed to give a $(p,q)$-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ is a natural generalization of the well-known problem of identifying the diagonal Ramsey numbers $r_k(p)$. The best-known general upper bound on $f(n,p,q)$ was given by Erdős and Gyárfás in 1997 using a probabilistic argument. Since then, improved bounds in the cases where $p=q$ have been obtained only for $p\in\{4,5\}$, each of which was proved by giv…
Let $F$ be a graph which contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. We prove tight bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a graph with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Our results extend those of Simonovits, who proved that there is one copy of $F$, and of Rademacher, Erd\H os and Lovász-Simonovits, who proved similar counting results when $F$ is a complete graph. One of the simplest cases of our theorem is the following new result. There is an absolute positive constant $c$ such that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $1 \le q < cn$, then every $n$ vertex graph wi…
A book of size b in a graph is an edge that lies in b triangles. Consider a graph G with n vertices and \lfloor n^2/4\rfloor +1 edges. Rademacher proved that G contains at least \lfloor n/2\rfloor triangles, and Erdos conjectured and Edwards proved that G contains a book of size at least n/6. We prove the following "linear combination" of these two results. Suppose that α\in (1/2, 1) and the maximum size of a book in G is less than αn/2. Then G contains at least α(1-α) n^2/4 - o(n^2) triangles as n approaches infinity. This is asymptotically sharp. On the other hand, for every α\in (1/3, 1/2),…
Let A be a set of nonnegative integers. For every nonnegative integer n and positive integer h, let r_{A}(n,h) denote the number of representations of n in the form n = a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_h, where a_1, a_2,..., a_h are elements of A and a_1 \leq a_2 \leq ... \leq a_h. The infinite set A is called a basis of order h if r_{A}(n,h) \geq 1 for every nonnegative integer n. Erdos and Turan conjectured that limsup_{n\to\infty} r_A(n,2) = \infty for every basis A of order 2. This paper introduces a new class of additive bases and a general additive problem, a special case of which is the Erdos-Turan …
Let $h=\prod_{i=1}^{t}p_i^{s_i}$ be its decomposition into a product of powers of distinct primes, and $\mathbb{Z}_{h}$ be the residue class ring modulo $h$. Let $\mathbb{Z}_{h}^{n}$ be the $n$-dimensional row vector space over $\mathbb{Z}_{h}$. A generalized Grassmann graph for $\mathbb{Z}_{h}^n$, denoted by $G_r(m,n,\mathbb{Z}_{h})$ ($G_r$ for short), has all $m$-subspaces of $\mathbb{Z}_{h}^n$ as its vertices, and two distinct vertices are adjacent if their intersection is of dimension $>m-r$, where $2\leq r\leq m+1\leq n$. In this paper, we determine the clique number and geometric structu…
Drisko \cite{drisko} proved (essentially) that every family of $2n-1$ matchings of size $n$ in a bipartite graph possesses a partial rainbow matching of size $n$. In \cite{bgs} this was generalized as follows: Any $\lfloor \frac{k+2}{k+1} n \rfloor -(k+1)$ matchings of size $n$ in a bipartite graph have a rainbow matching of size $n-k$. We extend this latter result to matchings of not necessarily equal cardinalities. Settling a conjecture of Drisko, we characterize those families of $2n-2$ matchings of size $n$ in a bipartite graph that do not possess a rainbow matching of size $n$. Combining …
A set $A$ of nonnegative integers is called a Sidon set if there is no Sidon 4-tuple, i.e., $(a,b,c,d)$ in $A$ with $a+b=c+d$ and $\{a, b\}\cap \{c, d\}=\emptyset$. Cameron and Erd\H os proposed the problem of determining the number of Sidon sets in $[n]$. Results of Kohayakawa, Lee, R\" odl and Samotij, and Saxton and Thomason has established that the number of Sidon sets is between $2^{(1.16+o(1))\sqrt{n}}$ and $2^{(6.442+o(1))\sqrt{n}}$. An $α$-generalized Sidon set in $[n]$ is a set with at most $α$ Sidon 4-tuples. One way to extend the problem of Cameron and Erd\H os is to estimate the nu…
In 1962, Erdős gave a sufficient condition for Hamilton cycles in terms of the vertex number, edge number, and minimum degree of graphs which generalized Ore's theorem. One year later, Moon and Moser gave an analogous result for Hamilton cycles in balanced bipartite graphs. In this paper we present the spectral analogues of Erdős' theorem and Moon-Moser's theorem, respectively. Let $\mathcal{G}_n^k$ be the class of non-Hamiltonian graphs of order $n$ and minimum degree at least $k$. We determine the maximum (signless Laplacian) spectral radius of graphs in $\mathcal{G}_n^k$ (for large enough $…
Let $h=\prod_{i=1}^{t}p_i^{s_i}$ be its decomposition into a product of powers of distinct primes, and $\mathbb{Z}_{h}$ be the residue class ring modulo $h$. Let $1\leq r\leq m\leq n$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{h}^{m\times n}$ be the set of all $m\times n$ matrices over $\mathbb{Z}_{h}$. The generalized bilinear forms graph over $\mathbb{Z}_{h}$, denoted by $\hbox{Bil}_r(\mathbb{Z}_{h}^{m\times n})$, has the vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_{h}^{m\times n}$, and two distinct vertices $A$ and $B$ are adjacent if the inner rank of $A-B$ is less than or equal to $r$. In this paper, we determine the clique number and…
Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group with exponent $\exp(G)=m$. For any positive integer $k$, the $k$-th generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant $\mathsf s_{km}(G)$ is defined as the smallest positive integer $t$ such that every sequence $S$ in $G$ of length at least $t$ has a zero-sum subsequence of length $km$. It is easy to see that $\mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^r)\ge(k+r)n-r$ where $n,r\in\mathbb N$. Kubertin conjectured that the equality holds for any $k\ge r$. In this paper, we mainly prove the following results: (1) For every positive integer $k\ge 6$, we have $$\mathsf s_{kn}(C_n^3)=(k+3)…
The famous Erdős-Gallai Theorem on the Turán number of paths states that every graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges contains a path with at least $\frac{2m}{n}$ edges. In this note, we first establish a simple but novel extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem by proving that every graph $G$ contains a path with at least $\frac{(s+1)N_{s+1}(G)}{N_{s}(G)}+s-1$ edges, where $N_j(G)$ denotes the number of $j$-cliques in $G$ for $1\leq j\leqω(G)$. We also construct a family of graphs which shows our extension improves the estimate given by Erdős-Gallai Theorem. Among applications, we show, for examp…

Let $f(K_n, H, q)$ be the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color $K_n$ so that every copy of $H$ is colored with at least $q$ colors. Originally posed by Erdős and Shelah when $H$ is complete, the asymptotics of this extremal function have been extensively studied when $H$ is a complete graph or a complete balanced bipartite graph. Here we investigate this function for some other $H$, and in particular we determine the asymptotic behavior of $f(K_n, P_v, q)$ for almost all values of $v$ and $q$, where $P_v$ is a path on $v$ vertices.

For graphs $T, H$, let $ex(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. In this paper we prove some sharp results on this generalization of Turán numbers, where our focus is for the graphs $T,H$ satisfying $χ(T)<χ(H)$. This can be dated back to Erdős, where he generalized the celebrated Turán's theorem by showing that for any $r\geq m$, the Turán graph $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,K_{r+1})$. For general graphs $H$ with $χ(H)=r+1>m$, Alon and Shikhelman showed that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+o(n^m)$. Here we determine this error term $…
A celebrated result of Mantel shows that every graph on $n$ vertices with $\lfloor n^2/4 \rfloor + 1$ edges must contain a triangle. A robust version of this result, due to Rademacher, says that there must in fact be at least $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ triangles in any such graph. Another strengthening, due to the combined efforts of many authors starting with Erdős, says that any such graph must have an edge which is contained in at least $n/6$ triangles. Following Mubayi, we study the interplay between these two results, that is, between the number of triangles in such graphs and their book numbe…
The \emph{Turán function} $\ex(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free graph with $n$ vertices. The classical results of Turán and Rademacher from 1941 led to the study of supersaturated graphs where the key question is to determine $h_F(n,q)$, the minimum number of copies of $F$ that a graph with $n$ vertices and $\ex(n,F)+q$ edges can have. We determine $h_F(n,q)$ asymptotically when $F$ is \emph{color-critical} (that is, $F$ contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number) and $q=o(n^2)$. Determining the exact value of $h_F(n,q)$ seems rather difficul…
Akin to the Erdős-Rademacher problem, Linial and Morgenstern made the following conjecture in tournaments: for any $d\in (0,1]$, among all $n$-vertex tournaments with $d\binom{n}{3}$ many 3-cycles, the number of 4-cycles is asymptotically minimized by a special random blow-up of a transitive tournament. Recently, Chan, Grzesik, Král' and Noel introduced spectrum analysis of adjacency matrices of tournaments in this study, and confirmed this for $d\geq 1/36$. In this paper, we investigate the analogous problem of minimizing the number of cycles of a given length. We prove that for integers $\el…
In dense Erdős-Rényi random graphs, we are interested in the events where large numbers of a given subgraph occur. The mean behavior of subgraph counts is known, and only recently were the related large deviations results discovered. Consequently, it is natural to ask, can one develop efficient numerical schemes to estimate the probability of an Erdős-Rényi graph containing an excessively large number of a fixed given subgraph? Using the large deviation principle we study an importance sampling scheme as a method to numerically compute the small probabilities of large triangle counts occurring…
The r-th power of a graph modifies a graph by connecting every vertex pair within distance r. This paper gives a generalization of the Alon-Boppana Theorem for the r-th power of graphs, including irregular graphs. This leads to a generalized notion of Ramanujan graphs, those for which the powered graph has a spectral gap matching the derived Alon-Boppana bound. In particular, we show that certain graphs that are not good expanders due to local irregularities, such as Erdos-Renyi random graphs, become almost Ramanujan once powered. A different generalization of Ramanujan graphs can also be obta…
Let $\mc{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph is {\em $\mc{F}$-free} if it contains no copy of a graph in $\mc{F}$ as a subgraph. A cornerstone of extremal graph theory is the study of the {\em Turán number} $ex(n,\mc{F})$, the maximum number of edges in an $\mc{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Define the {\em Zarankiewicz number} $z(n,\mc{F})$ to be the maximum number of edges in an $\mc{F}$-free {\em bipartite} graph on $n$ vertices. Let $C_k$ denote a cycle of length $k$, and let $\mc{C}_k$ denote the set of cycles $C_{\ell}$, where $3 \le \ell \leq k$ and $\ell$ and $k$ have the same parity. …
We study multilinear generalized Radon transforms using a graph-theoretic paradigm that includes the widely studied linear case. These provide a general mechanism to study Falconer-type problems involving $(k+1)$-point configurations in geometric measure theory, with $k \ge 2$, including the distribution of simplices, volumes and angles determined by the points of fractal subsets $E \subset {\Bbb R}^d$, $d \ge 2$. If $T_k(E)$ denotes the set of noncongruent $(k+1)$-point configurations determined by $E$, we show that if the Hausdorff dimension of $E$ is greater than $d-\frac{d-1}{2k}$, then th…
