The stability method is very useful for obtaining exact solutions of many extremal graph problems. Its key step is to establish the stability property which, roughly speaking, states that any two almost optimal graphs of the same order $n$ can be made isomorphic by changing o(n^2) edges.
Here we show how the recently developed theory of graph limits can be used to give an analytic approach to stability. As an application, we present a new proof of the Erdos-Simonovits Stability Theorem.
Also, we investigate various properties of the edit distance. In particular, we show that the combinatorial and fractional versions are within a constant factor from each other, thus answering a question of Goldreich, Krivelevich, Newman, and Rozenberg.
The following sharpening of Turán's theorem is proved. Let $T_{n,p}$ denote the complete $p$--partite graph of order $n$ having the maximum number of edges. If $G$ is an $n$-vertex $K_{p+1}$-free graph with $e(T_{n,p})-t$ edges then there exists an (at most) $p$-chromatic subgraph $H_0$ such that $e(H_0)\geq e(G)-t$. Using this result we present a concise, contemporary proof (i.e., one applying Szemerédi's regularity lemma) for the classical stability result of Simonovits.
A fundamental barrier in extremal hypergraph theory is the presence of many near-extremal constructions with very different structures. Indeed, the classical constructions due to Kostochka imply that the notorious extremal problem for the tetrahedron exhibits this phenomenon assuming Turán's conjecture. Our main result is to construct a finite family of triple systems $\mathcal{M}$, determine its Turán number, and prove that there are two near-extremal $\mathcal{M}$-free constructions that are far from each other in edit-distance. This is the first extremal result for a hypergraph family that …
In this paper extremal problems for uniform hypergraphs are studied in the general setting of hereditary properties. It turns out that extremal problems about edges are particular cases of a general analyic problem about a recently introduced graph parameter. The paper builds a basis for the systematic study of this parameter and illustrates a range of various proof tools. It is shown that extremal problems about the number of edges of uniform hypergraphs are asymptotically equivalent to extremal problems about the largest eigenvalue; this result is new even for 2-graphs. Several concrete prob…
The $χ$-stability index ${\rm es}_χ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of its edges whose removal results in a graph with the chromatic number smaller than that of $G$. In this paper three open problems from [European J.\ Combin.\ 84 (2020) 103042] are considered. Examples are constructed which demonstrate that a known characterization of $k$-regular ($k\le 5$) graphs $G$ with ${\rm es}_χ(G) = 1$ does not extend to $k\ge 6$. Graphs $G$ with $χ(G)=3$ for which ${\rm es}_χ(G)+{\rm es}_χ(\overline{G}) = 2$ holds are characterized. Necessary conditions on graphs $G$ which attain a known uppe…
For every positive integer $t$ we construct a finite family of triple systems ${\mathcal M}_t$, determine its Turán number, and show that there are $t$ extremal ${\mathcal M}_t$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. We also prove a strong stability theorem: every ${\mathcal M}_t$-free triple system whose size is close to the maximum size is a subgraph of one of these $t$ extremal configurations after removing a small proportion of vertices. This is the first stability theorem for a hypergraph problem with an arbitrary (finite) number of extremal configurations. Mor…
Both the Simonovits stability theorem and the Nikiforov spectral stability theorem are powerful tools for solving exact values of Turán numbers in extremal graph theory. Recently, Füredi [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 115 (2015)] provided a concise and contemporary proof of the Simonovits stability theorem. In this note, we present a unified treatment for some extremal graph problems, including short proofs of Nikiforov's spectral stability theorem and the clique stability theorem proved recently by Ma and Qiu [European J. Combin. 84 (2020)]. Moreover, some spectral extremal problems related to the…

In this paper we consider spectral extremal problems for hypergraphs. We give two general criteria under which such results may be deduced from `strong stability' forms of the corresponding (pure) extremal results. These results hold for the α-spectral radius defined using the α-norm for any α>1; the usual spectrum is the case α=2. Our results imply that any hypergraph Turán problem which has the stability property and whose extremal construction satisfies some rather mild continuity assumptions admits a corresponding spectral result. A particular example is to determine the maximum α-spectral…
We study the behaviour of $K_{r+1}$-free graphs $G$ of almost extremal size, that is, typically, $e(G)=ex(n,K_{r+1})-O(n)$. We show that such graphs must have a large amount of 'symmetry', in particular that all but very few vertices of $G$ must have twins. As a corollary, we obtain a new, short proof of a theorem of Simonovits on the structure of extremal graphs with $ω(G)\leq r$ and $χ(G)\geq k$ for fixed $k \geq r \geq 2$.
It follows from known results that every regular tripartite hypergraph of positive degree, with $n$ vertices in each class, has matching number at least $n/2$. This bound is best possible, and the extremal configuration is unique. Here we prove a stability version of this statement, establishing that every regular tripartite hypergraph with matching number at most $(1 + \varepsilon)n/2$ is close in structure to the extremal configuration, where "closeness" is measured by an explicit function of $\varepsilon$. We also answer a question of Aharoni, Kotlar and Ziv about matchings in hypergraphs w…
We determine the maximum number of edges of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with the property that none of its $r$-cliques intersects a fixed set $M\subset V(G)$. For $(r-1)|M|\ge n$, the $(r-1)$-partite Turan graph turns out to be the unique extremal graph. For $(r-1)|M|<n$, there is a whole family of extremal graphs, which we describe explicitly. In addition we provide corresponding stability results.
Given a hereditary family $\mathcal{G}$ of admissible graphs and a function $λ(G)$ that linearly depends on the statistics of order-$κ$ subgraphs in a graph $G$, we consider the extremal problem of determining $λ(n,\mathcal{G})$, the maximum of $λ(G)$ over all admissible graphs $G$ of order $n$. We call the problem perfectly $B$-stable for a graph $B$ if there is a constant $C$ such that every admissible graph $G$ of order $n\ge C$ can be made into a blow-up of $B$ by changing at most $C(λ(n,\mathcal{G})-λ(G)){n\choose2}$ adjacencies. As special cases, this property describes all almost extrem…

We extend the classical stability theorem of Erdos and Simonovits in two directions: first, we allow the order of the forbidden graph to grow as log of order of the host graph, and second, our extremal condition is on the spectral radius of the host graph.
A graphic sequence $π$ is potentially $H$-graphic if there is some realization of $π$ that contains $H$ as a subgraph. The Erdős-Jacobson-Lehel problem asks to determine $σ(H,n)$, the minimum even integer such that any $n$-term graphic sequence $π$ with sum at least $σ(H,n)$ is potentially $H$-graphic. The parameter $σ(H,n)$ is known as the potential function of $H$, and can be viewed as a degree sequence variant of the classical extremal function ${\rm ex}(n,H)$. Recently, Ferrara, LeSaulnier, Moffatt and Wenger [On the sum necessary to ensure that a degree sequence is potentially $H$-graphic…
We consider the Turán-type problem of bounding the size of a set $M \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^n$ that does not contain a linear copy of a given fixed set $N \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^k$, where $n$ is large compared to $k$. An Erdős-Stone type theorem [5] in this setting gives a bound that is tight up to a $o(2^n)$ error term; our first main result gives a stability version of this theorem, showing that such an $M$ that is close in size to the upper bound in [5] is close in edit distance to the obvious extremal example. Our second result shows that the error term in [5] is exactly controlled by the s…
