We define a new family of multivariate stochastic processes over a finite time horizon that we call Generalised Liouville Processes (GLPs). GLPs are Markov processes constructed by splitting Lévy random bridges into non-overlapping subprocesses via time changes. We show that the terminal values and the increments of GLPs have generalised multivariate Liouville distributions, justifying their name. We provide various other properties of GLPs and some examples.
It is proved in this paper that Riemann-Liouville processes can arise from the temporal structures of the scaled occupation time fluctuation limits of the site-dependent (d,α,σ(x))branching particle systems in the case of 1=d<α<2 and \int_{\R}σ(x)\d x<\infty.
Using a coupling for the weighted sum of independent random variables and the explicit expression of the transition semigroup of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by compound Poisson processes, we establish the existence of a successful coupling and the Liouville theorem for general Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Then we present the explicit coupling property of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes directly from the behaviour of the corresponding symbol or characteristic exponent. This approach allows us to derive gradient estimates for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes via the symbol.
We derive a generalised Itō formula for stochastic processes which are constructed by a convolution of a deterministic kernel with a centred Lévy process. This formula has a unifying character in the sense that it contains the classical Itō formula for Lévy processes as well as recent change-of-variable formulas for Gaussian processes such as fractional Brownian motion as special cases. Our result also covers fractional Lévy processes (with Mandelbrot-Van Ness kernel) and a wide class of related processes for which such a generalised Itō formula has not yet been available in the literature.
In this paper we prove exact forms of large deviations for local times and intersection local times of fractional Brownian motions and Riemann-Liouville processes. We also show that a fractional Brownian motion and the related Riemann-Liouville process behave like constant multiples of each other with regard to large deviations for their local and intersection local times. As a consequence of our large deviation estimates, we derive laws of iterated logarithm for the corresponding local times. The key points of our methods: (1) logarithmic superadditivity of a normalized sequence of moments of…
This article is concerned with the joint law of an integrated Wishart bridge process and the trace of an integrated inverse Wishart bridge process over the interval $ \left[0,t\right] $. Its Laplace transform is obtained by studying the Wishart bridge processes and the absolute continuity property of Wishart laws.
For a quadratic Markov branching process (QMBP), we show that the decay parameter is equal to the first eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville operator associated with the PDE that the generating function of the transition probability satisfies. The proof is based on the spectral properties of the Sturm-Liouville operator. Both the upper and lower bounds of the decay parameter are given explicitly by means of a version of Hardy inequality. Two examples are provided to illustrate our results. The important quantity, the Hardy index, which is closely linked with the decay parameter of QMBP, is deeply i…
We investigate the stochastic processes obtained as the fractional Riemann-Liouville integral of order $α\in (0,1)$ of Gauss-Markov processes. The general expressions of the mean, variance and covariance functions are given. Due to the central rule, for the fractional integral of standard Brownian motion and of the non-stationary/stationary Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, the covariance functions are carried out in closed-form. In order to clarify how the fractional order parameter $α$ affects these functions, their numerical evaluations are shown and compared also with those of the correspondin…
From the point of view of stochastic analysis the Caputo and Riemann-Liouville derivatives of order $\al \in (0,2)$ can be viewed as (regularized) generators of stable Lévy motions interrupted on crossing a boundary. This interpretation naturally suggests fully mixed, two-sided or even multidimensional generalizations of these derivatives, as well as a probabilistic approach to the analysis of the related equations. These extensions are introduced and some well-posedness results are obtained that generalize, simplify and unify lots of known facts. This probabilistic analysis leads one to study…
In 1964 R.Gangolli published a Lévy-Khintchine type formula which characterised $K$ bi-invariant infinitely divisible probability measures on a symmetric space $G/K$. His main tool was Harish-Chandra's spherical functions which he used to construct a generalisation of the Fourier transform of a measure. In this paper we use generalised spherical functions (or Eisenstein integrals) and extensions of these which we construct using representation theory to obtain such a characterisation for arbitrary infinitely divisible probability measures on a non-compact symmetric space. We consider the examp…
This paper provides a probabilistic approach to solve linear equations involving Caputo and Riemann-Liouville type derivatives. Using the probabilistic interpretation of these operators as the generators of interrupted Feller processes, we obtain well-posedness results and explicit solutions (in terms of the transition densities of the underlying stochastic processes). The problems studied here include fractional linear differential equations, well analyzed in the literature, as well as their far reaching extensions.
Subordinating a multivariate Lévy process, the subordinate, with a univariate subordinator gives rise to a pathwise construction of a new Lévy process, provided the subordinator and the subordinate are independent processes. The variance-gamma model in finance was generated accordingly from a Brownian motion and a gamma process. Alternatively, multivariate subordination can be used to create Lévy processes, but this requires the subordinate to have independent components. In this paper, we show that there exists another operation acting on pairs $(T,X)$ of Lévy processes which creates a Lévy p…
Some fractional and anomalous diffusions are driven by equations involving fractional derivatives in both time and space. Such diffusions are processes with randomly varying times. In representing the solutions to those diffusions, the explicit laws of certain stable processes turn out to be fundamental. This paper directs one's efforts towards the explicit representation of solutions to fractional and anomalous diffusions related to Sturm-Liouville problems of fractional order associated to fractional power function spaces. Furthermore, we study a new version of the Bochner's subordination ru…
Weak variance generalised gamma convolution processes are multivariate Brownian motions weakly subordinated by multivariate Thorin subordinators. Within this class, we extend a result from strong to weak subordination that a driftless Brownian motion gives rise to a self-decomposable process. Under moment conditions on the underlying Thorin measure, we show that this condition is also necessary. We apply our results to some prominent processes such as the weak variance alpha-gamma process, and illustrate the necessity of our moment conditions in some cases.
By applying an idea of Borodin and Olshanski [J. Algebra 313 (2007), 40-60], we study various scaling limits of determinantal point processes with trace class projection kernels given by spectral projections of selfadjoint Sturm-Liouville operators. Instead of studying the convergence of the kernels as functions, the method directly addresses the strong convergence of the induced integral operators. We show that, for this notion of convergence, the Dyson, Airy, and Bessel kernels are universal in the bulk, soft-edge, and hard-edge scaling limits. This result allows us to give a short and unifi…
We discuss in a stochastic framework the interplay between Riemann-Liouville type operators applied to stochastic processes, real interpolation, bounded mean oscillation, and an approximation problem for stochastic integrals. We provide upper and lower bounds for gradient processes on the Lévy-Itô space, which arise in the special case of the Wiener space from the Feynman-Kac theory for parabolic PDEs. The upper bounds are formulated in terms of BMO-conditions on the fractional integrated gradient, the lower bounds in terms of oscillatory quantities. On the general Lévy-Itô space we are concer…
In this paper novel simulation methods are provided for the generalised inverse Gaussian (GIG) Lévy process. Such processes are intractable for simulation except in certain special edge cases, since the Lévy density associated with the GIG process is expressed as an integral involving certain Bessel Functions, known as the Jaeger integral in diffusive transport applications. We here show for the first time how to solve the problem indirectly, using generalised shot-noise methods to simulate the underlying point processes and constructing an auxiliary variables approach that avoids any direct c…
We unify and extend a number of approaches related to constructing multivariate Variance-Gamma (V.G.) models for option pricing. An overarching model is derived by subordinating multivariate Brownian motion to a subordinator from the Thorin (1977) class of generalised Gamma convolution subordinators. A class of models due to Grigelionis (2007), which contains the well-known Madan-Seneta V.G. model, is of this type, but our multivariate generalization is considerably wider, allowing in particular for processes with infinite variation and a variety of dependencies between the underlying processe…
We study the long-time behaviour of a class of piecewise-deterministic Markov processes which are an extension of some recent works. These $d$-dimensional processes, d>=1, can especially be used to model the motion of a bacterium in presence of a chemo-attractant, with parameters depending both on the position and the velocity of the bacterium. Using the method of Meyn and Tweedie, we show that under some good assumptions on the parameters of the model, such a process converges exponentially fast towards its invariant measure. We also establish the existence of exponential moments of the invar…
We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the Liouville and strong Liouville properties of the infinitesimal generator of a Lévy process and subordinate Lévy processes. Combining our criterion with the necessary and sufficient condition obtained by Alibaud et al., we obtain a characterization of (orthogonal subgroup of) the set of zeros of the characteristic exponent of the Lévy process.
We introduce a stochastic process with Wishart marginals: the generalised Wishart process (GWP). It is a collection of positive semi-definite random matrices indexed by any arbitrary dependent variable. We use it to model dynamic (e.g. time varying) covariance matrices. Unlike existing models, it can capture a diverse class of covariance structures, it can easily handle missing data, the dependent variable can readily include covariates other than time, and it scales well with dimension; there is no need for free parameters, and optional parameters are easy to interpret. We describe how to con…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the maximum principle of Schrödinger operators in terms of the bottom of the spectrum of time-changed processes. As a corollary, we obtain a sufficient condition for the Liouville property of Schrödinger operators.
We review the probabilistic properties of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes in Hilbert spaces driven by Lévy processes. The emphasis is on the different contexts in which these processes arise, such as stochastic partial differential equations, continuous-state branching processes, generalised Mehler semigroups and operator self-decomposable distributions. We also examine generalisations to the case where the driving noise is cylindrical.
Many important index transforms can be constructed via the spectral theory of Sturm-Liouville differential operators. Using the spectral expansion method, we investigate the general connection between the index transforms and the associated parabolic partial differential equations. We show that the notion of Yor integral, recently introduced by the second author, can be extended to the class of Sturm-Liouville integral transforms. We furthermore show that, by means of the Feynman-Kac theorem, index transforms can be used for studying Markovian diffusion processes. This gives rise to new applic…
We analyse a version of the policy iteration algorithm for the discounted infinite-horizon problem for controlled multidimensional diffusion processes, where both the drift and the diffusion coefficient can be controlled. We prove that, under assumptions on the problem data, the payoffs generated by the algorithm converge monotonically to the value function and an accumulation point of the sequence of policies is an optimal policy. The algorithm is stated and analysed in continuous time and state, with discretisation featuring neither in theorems nor the proofs. A key technical tool used to sh…
We study limiting properties of ratios of ordered points of point processes whose intensity measures have regularly varying tails, giving a systematic treatment which points the way to "large-trimming" properties of extremal processes and a variety of applications. Our point process approach facilitates a connection with the negative binomial process of Gregoire (1984) and consequently to certain generalised versions of the Poisson-Dirichlet distribution.
We obtain an intertwining relation between some Riemann-Liouville operators of order a in (1,2) connecting through a certain multiplicative identity in law the one-dimensional marginals of reflected completely asymmetric a-stable Lévy processes. An alternative approach based on recurrent extensions of positive self-similar Markov processes and exponential functionals of Lévy processes is also discussed.
We show that when one draws a simple conformal loop ensemble (CLE$_κ$ for $κ\in (8/3,4)$) on an independent $\sqrtκ$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surface and explores the CLE in a natural Markovian way, the quantum surfaces (e.g., corresponding to the interior of the CLE loops) that are cut out form a Poisson point process of quantum disks. This construction allows us to make direct links between CLE on LQG, asymmetric $(4/κ)$-stable processes, and labeled branching trees. The ratio between positive and negative jump intensities of these processes turns out to be $-\cos (4 π/ κ)$, which can…
In this paper we introduce a new generalisation of the relative Fisher Information for Markov jump processes on a finite or countable state space, and prove an inequality which connects this object with the relative entropy and a large deviation rate functional. In addition to possessing various favourable properties, we show that this generalised Fisher Information converges to the classical Fisher Information in an appropriate limit. We then use this generalised Fisher Information and the aforementioned inequality to qualitatively study coarse-graining problems for jump processes on discrete…
We obtain an integral formula for the distribution of the first hitting time of the origin for one-dimensional $α$-stable processes $X_t$, where $α\in(1,2)$. We also find a spectral-type integral formula for the transition operators $P_0^t$ of $X_t$ killed upon hitting the origin. Both expressions involve exponentially growing oscillating functions, which play a role of generalised eigenfunctions for $P_0^t$.
Small-space and large-time estimates and asymptotic expansion of the distribution function and (the derivatives of) the density function of hitting times of points for symmetric Lévy processes are studied. The Lévy measure is assumed to have completely monotone density function, and a scaling-type condition inf z Psi"(z) / Psi'(z) > 0 is imposed on the Lévy-Khintchine exponent Psi. Proofs are based on generalised eigenfunction expansion for processes killed upon hitting the origin.
Given a sequence of resistance forms that converges with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff-vague topology and satisfies a uniform volume doubling condition, we show the convergence of corresponding Brownian motions and local times. As a corollary of this, we obtain the convergence of time-changed processes. Examples of our main results include scaling limits of Liouville Brownian motion, the Bouchaud trap model and the random conductance model on trees and self-similar fractals. For the latter two models, we show that under some assumptions the limiting process is a FIN diffusion on the relevant…
We consider the family of nearest neighbour interacting particle systems on $\mathbb{Z}$ allowing $0$, $1$ or $2$ particles at a site. We parametrize a wide subfamily of processes exhibiting product blocking measure and show how this family can be "stood up" in the sense of Balázs and Bowen (2018). By comparing measures we prove new three variable Jacobi style identities, related to counting certain generalised Frobenius partitions with a $2$-repetition condition. By specialising to specific processes we produce two variable identities that are shown to relate to Jacobi triple product and vari…
Tempered fractional Brownian motion is revisited from the viewpoint of reduced fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Many of the basic properties of the tempered fractional Brownian motion can be shown to be direct consequences or modifications of the properties of fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Mixed tempered fractional Brownian motion is introduced and its properties are considered. Tempered fractional Brownian motion is generalised from single index to two indices. Finally, tempered multifractional Brownian motion and its properties are studied.
