It is known that odd-dimensional de Sitter space acts as a transparent potential for free fields. Previous studies have explained this phenomena by relating de Sitter free field equations of motion to the time-independent Schrodinger equation with known transparent potentials. In this work we show that de Sitter's transparency is a consequence of an infinite set of "hidden" symmetries. These symmetries arise from an accidental symmetry for the zero-mode of matter fields, as well as the boost isometry of de Sitter space. For simplicity, we consider the case of massive Klein-Gordon theory. We show that the Noether charges associated with these hidden symmetries distinguish the two linearly-independent solutions of the free field wave equation in the asymptotic past and future of de Sitter. Conservation of these charges requires that the asymptotic behavior of any solution be identical, up to a constant phase, in the future and the past, which is the property of transparency. In the quantized theory, these charges act trivially on particle states belonging to the in/out vacuum Fock space. For particle states constructed from other vacua, the action of the charges generates particles. We comment on how these hidden symmetries may be present in interacting theories.
We consider quantum field theory in de Sitter space, focusing on the cases of scalars, spin 1/2 fields, and symmetric and anti-symmetric tensor fields of arbitrary spin. The free field equations in global coordinates can be reduced to a one dimensional Schrodinger problem which possesses a remarkable structure; the potential is of an algebraically special type which appears as a multi-soliton solution of the KdV equation. In an odd number of spacetime dimensions these potentials are "transparent" in the sense that their reflection coefficients vanish identically. This has a remarkable conseque…
Defining a new r-matrix compatible with the scalar product at the basis of the Chern-Simons action for a particle coupled to (2+1) Lorentzian gravity with cosmological constant, I show how deformed symmetries of $κ$-de Sitter and, in the vanishing cosmological limit, of $κ$-Poincaré kind, arise naturally as quantum-deformation of three dimensional gravity. I obtain moreover the non-commutative spacetime associated to these kinds of symmetries.
The asymptotic symmetry group (ASG) at future null infinity (I^+) of four-dimensional de Sitter spacetimes is defined and shown to be given by the group of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms acting on I^+. Finite charges are constructed for each choice of ASG generator together with a two-surface on I^+. A conservation equation is derived relating the evolution of the charges with the radiation flux through I^+.
In this short note, we verify explicitly in static coordinates that the non trivial asymptotic Killing vectors at spatial infinity for anti-de Sitter space-times correspond one to one to the conformal Killing vectors of the conformally flat metric induced on the boundary. The fall-off conditions for the metric perturbations that guarantee finiteness of the associated conserved charges are derived.
Discrete symmetries, parity, time reversal, antipodal, and charge conjugation transformations for spinor field in de Sitter space, are presented in the ambient space notation, i.e. in a coordinate independent way. The PT and PCT transformations are also discussed in this notation. The five-current density is studied and their transformation under the discrete symmetries is discussed.
In this paper, we show that a universe with a dynamical cosmological constant approaching pure de Sitter at timelike infinity, enjoys an infinite dimensional symmetry group at its horizon. This group is larger than the usual $SO(4,1)$ of pure de Sitter. The charges associated with the asymptotic symmetry generators are non-integrable, and we demonstrate that they promote an extended version of the first law of thermodynamics. This contains four pairs of conjugate variables. The pair $(Θ,Λ)$ corresponding to the change in the cosmological constant and its conjugate volume $Θ$. The contribution …
In this paper, we study the correspondence between a field theory in de Sitter space in $D$-dimensions and a dual conformal field theory in a euclidean space in $(D-1)$-dimensions. In particular, we investigate the form in which this correspondence is established for a system of interacting scalar and a vector fields propagating in de Sitter space. We analyze some necessary (but not sufficient) conditions for which conformal symmetry is preserved in the dual theory in $(D-1)$-dimensions, making possible the establishment of the correspondence. The discussion that we address on this paper is fr…
Using the canonical formalism, we study the asymptotic symmetries of the topological 3-dimensional gravity with torsion. In the anti-de Sitter sector, the symmetries are realized by two independent Virasoro algebras with classical central charges. In the simple case of the teleparallel vacuum geometry, the central charges are equal to each other and have the same value as in general relativity, while in the general Riemann-Cartan geometry, they become different.
We present a detailed discussion of the asymptotic symmetries of Anti-de Sitter space in two dimensions and their relationship with the conformal group in one dimension. We use this relationship to give a microscopical derivation of the entropy of 2d black holes that have asymptotically Anti-de Sitter behaviour. The implications of our results for the conjectured AdS_2/CFT_1 duality are also discussed.
We start a systematic investigation of possible isometries of the asymptotically de Sitter solutions to Einstein equations. We reformulate the Killing equation as conformal equations for the initial data at $\mathcal{I}^+$. This allows for partial classification of possible symmetry algebras. In particular, if they are not maximal, they may be at most $4$-dimensional. We provide several examples. As a simple collorary it is shown that the only spacetime in which the Killing horizon intersects $\mathcal{I}^+$ (after a conformal completion) is locally the de Sitter universe.
We analyze the class of models where a suitable coupling between the inflaton field and the vector field gives rise to scale-invariant vector perturbations. We exploit the fact that the de Sitter isometry group acts as conformal group on the three-dimensional Euclidean space for the super-Hubble fluctuations in order to characterize the correlators involving the inflaton and the vector fields.
The discrete symmetries of the Dirac field on the de Sitter manifold are studied taking into account that this has two portions that can play the role of physical space-times, namely the expanding and a collapsing universes. The proper discrete isometries which preserve the portion have a physical meaning in contrast to the improper ones which change the portion remaining thus of a mere mathematical interest. The discrete symmetries generated by the proper isometries and charge conjugation are studied in physical frames on the expanding portion shoving that all the discrete transformations rev…
We present the first detailed study of the kinematics of free relativistic particles whose symmetries are described by a quantum deformation of the de Sitter algebra, known as $q$-de Sitter Hopf algebra. The quantum deformation parameter is a function of the Planck length $\ell$ and the de Sitter radius $H^{-1}$, such that when the Planck length vanishes, the algebra reduces to the de Sitter algebra, while when the de Sitter radius is sent to infinity one recovers the $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra. In the first limit the picture is that of a particle with trivial momentum space geometry moving on …
We provide a general method for studying a manifestly covariant formulation of $p$-form gauge theories on the de Sitter space. This is done by stereographically projecting the corresponding theories, defined on flat Minkowski space, onto the surface of a de Sitter hyperboloid. The gauge fields in the two descriptions are mapped by conformal Killing vectors allowing for a very transparent analysis and compact presentation of results. As applications, the axial anomaly is computed and the electric-magnetic duality is exhibited. Finally, the zero curvature limit is shown to yield consistent resul…
The special galileon and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories are effective field theories of a single scalar field that have many interesting properties in flat space. These theories can be extended to all maximally symmetric spaces, where their algebras of shift symmetries are simple. We study aspects of the curved space versions of these theories: for the special galileon, we find a new compact expression for its Lagrangian in de Sitter space and a field redefinition that relates it to the previous, more complicated formulation. This field redefinition reduces to the well-studied galileon duali…
We study the multifield inflationary models where the cosmological perturbation is sourced by light scalar fields other than the inflaton. We exploit the operator product expansion and partly the symmetries present during the de Sitter epoch to characterize the non-Gaussian four-point correlator in the squeezed limit. We point out that the contribution to it from the intrinsic non-Gaussianity of the light fields at horizon crossing can be larger than the usually studied contribution arising on superhorizon scales and it comes with a different shape. Our findings indicate that particular attent…
We propose two different high-energy-theory correspondences with graphene (and related materials) scenarios, associated to grain boundaries, that are topological defects for which both Dirac points are necessary. The first correspondence points to a $(3+1)$-dimensional theory, with nonzero torsion, with spatiotemporal gauge group $SO(3,1)$, locally isomorphic to the Lorentz group in $(3+1)$ dimensions, or to the de Sitter group in $(2+1)$ dimensions. The other correspondence treats the two Dirac fields as an internal symmetry doublet, and it is linked here with unconventional supersymmetry wit…
The action of the discrete symmetries on the scalar mode functions of the de Sitter spacetime is studied. The invariance with respect to a combination of discrete symmetries is put forward as a criterion to select a certain vacuum out of a family of vacua. The implications of the choices for eigenfunctions of various common sets of commuting operators are explored, and the results are compared to the different original choices from the literature that have been utilized in order to exhibit thermal effects.
Soft gravitons produced by the expansion of de Sitter can be viewed as the Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken asymptotic symmetries of the de Sitter spacetime. We explicitly construct the associated charges, and show that acting with the charges on the vacuum creates a new state equivalent to a change in the local coordinates induced by the soft graviton. While the effect remains unobservable within the domain of a single observer where the symmetry is unbroken, this change is physical when comparing different asymptotic observers, or between a transformed and un-transformed initia…
We consider a class of exact solutions which represent nonexpanding impulsive waves in backgrounds with nonzero cosmological constant. Using a convenient 5-dimensional formalism it is shown that these spacetimes admit at least three global Killing vector fields. The same geometrical approach enables us to find all geodesics in a simple explicit form and describe the effect of impulsive waves on test particles. Timelike geodesics in the axially-symmetric Hotta-Tanaka spacetime are studied in detail. It is also demonstrated that for vanishing cosmological constant, the symmetries and geodesics r…
In this paper we use conformal field theory techniques to constrain the form of the correlations functions of an inflationary scalar-vector model described by the interaction term $f_1(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν} + f_2(ϕ)\tilde{F}_{μν}F^{μν}$. We use the fact that the conformal group is the relevant symmetry group acting on super horizon scales in an inflationary de Sitter background. As a result, we find that super horizon conformal symmetry, constraints the form of the coupling functions $f_1, f_2$ to be homogeneous functions of the same degree. We derive the general form of the correlators involving sca…
We investigate the quantum aspects of three-dimensional gravity with a positive cosmological constant. The reduced phase space of the three-dimensional de Sitter gravity is obtained as the space which consists of the Kerr-de Sitter space-times and their Virasoro deformations. A quantization of the phase space is carried out by the geometric quantization of the coadjoint orbits of the asymptotic Virasoro symmetries. The Virasoro algebras with real central charges are obtained as the quantum asymptotic symmetries. The states of globally de Sitter and point particle solutions become the primary s…

We introduce a general class of four-dimensional effective field theories which include curved space Galileons and DBI theories possessing nonlinear shift-like symmetries. These effective theories arise from purely gravitational actions for 3-branes probing higher dimensional spaces. In the simplest case of a Minkowski brane embedded in a higher dimensional Minkowski background, the resulting four-dimensional effective field theory is the Galileon one, with its associated Galilean symmetry and second order equations. However, much more general structures are possible. We construct the general …
In this note we show that the cosmological domain wall and the de Sitter quantum breaking problems complement each other in theories with discrete symmetries that are spontaneously broken at low energies. Either the symmetry is exact and there is a domain wall problem, or it is approximate and there exists an inconsistent de Sitter minimum. This leaves no room for many extension of the Standard Model based on such discrete symmetries. We give some examples that include NMSSM, spontaneous CP violation at the weak scale and some versions of the Peccei-Quinn scenario with discrete symmetries.
We study a two dimensional dilaton gravity system, recently examined by Almheiri and Polchinski, which describes near extremal black holes, or more generally, nearly $AdS_2$ spacetimes. The asymptotic symmetries of $AdS_2$ are all the time reparametrizations of the boundary. These symmetries are spontaneously broken by the $AdS_2$ geometry and they are explicitly broken by the small deformation away from $AdS_2$. This pattern of spontaneous plus explicit symmetry breaking governs the gravitational backreaction of the system. It determines several gravitational properties such as the linear in …
Massive fields on (anti) de Sitter space realize extended shift symmetries at particular values of their masses. We find these symmetries for all bosonic p-forms and mixed symmetry fields, in arbitrary spacetime dimension. These shift symmetric fields correspond to the missing longitudinal modes of mixed symmetry partially massless fields where the top row of the Young tableau is activated.
We discuss kinematical properties of a free relativistic particle with deformed phase space in which momentum space is given by (a submanifold of) de Sitter space. We provide a detailed derivation of the action, Hamiltonian structure and equations of motion for such free particle. We study the action of deformed relativistic symmetries on the phase space and derive explicit formulas for the action of the deformed Poincare' group. Finally we provide a discussion on parametrization of the particle worldlines stressing analogies and differences with ordinary relativistic kinematics.
We give a detailed discussion of the use of the (3+1) decomposition and of Bardeen's variables in massive gravity linearized over a Minkowski as well as over a de Sitter background. In Minkowski space the Bardeen "potential" Φ, that in the massless case is a non-radiative degree of freedom, becomes radiative and describes the helicity-0 component of the massive graviton. Its dynamics is governed by a simple Klein-Gordon action, supplemented by a term (\Box Φ)^2 if we do not make the Fierz-Pauli tuning of the mass term. In de Sitter the identification of the variable that describes the radiativ…
Making use of the symmetries of anti-de Sitter space-time, we derive an analytic expression for the bispinor of parallel transport, from which we construct in closed form the vacuum Feynman Green's function of the Dirac field on this background. Using the imaginary time anti-periodicity property of the thermal Feynman Green's function, we calculate the thermal expectation values of the fermion condensate and stress-energy tensor and highlight the effect of quantum corrections as compared to relativistic kinetic theory results.
We present a covariant phase space construction of hamiltonian generators of asymptotic symmetries with `Dirichlet' boundary conditions in de Sitter spacetime, extending a previous study of Jäger. We show that the de Sitter charges so defined are identical to those of Ashtekar, Bonga, and Kesavan (ABK). We then present a comparison of ABK charges with other notions of de Sitter charges. We compare ABK charges with counterterm charges, showing that they differ only by a constant offset, which is determined in terms of the boundary metric alone. We also compare ABK charges with charges defined b…
Motivated by black hole physics, we define the Unruh state for a scalar field in de Sitter space. Like the Bunch-Davies state, the Unruh-de Sitter state appears thermal to a static observer. However, it breaks some of the symmetries of de Sitter space. We calculate the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor in the Unruh-de Sitter state in two dimensions and find a non-vanishing flux of outgoing negative energy. Extrapolating the result to four dimensions, we argue that this backreacts on the initial de Sitter geometry semi-classically. Notably, we estimate that de Sitter space is dest…
We revisit the asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetimes in three dimensions. Using the conformal-completion technique, we formulate the boundary conditions in a covariant fashion and construct the global charges associated with the asymptotic symmetries. The charges so constructed are conserved for the asymptotic Killing vectors fields but are not conserved for the asymptotic conformal Killing vector fields. The quantity integrated to obtain the global charge is interpreted as the Brown-York boundary stress-energy tensor and it is found not to be traceless. The trace is interpreted as the trac…
It is possible to associate temperatures with the non-extremal horizons of a large class of spherically symmetric spacetimes using periodicity in the Euclidean sector and this procedure works for the de Sitter spacetime as well. But, unlike e.g., the black hole spacetimes, the de Sitter spacetime also allows a description in Friedmann coordinates. This raises the question of whether the thermality of the de Sitter horizon can be obtained, working entirely in the Friedmann coordinates, without reference to the static coordinates or using the symmetries of de Sitter spacetime. We discuss several…

We exploit an interpretation of gravity as the symmetry broken phase of a de Sitter gauge theory to construct new solutions to the first order field equations. The new solutions are constructed by performing large $Spin(4,1)$ gauge transformations on the ordinary de Sitter solution and extracting first the tetrad, then the induced metric. The class of metrics so obtained is an infinite class labelled by an integer, $q$. Each solution satisfies the local field equations defining constant positive curvature, and is therefore locally isometric to de Sitter space wherever the metric is non-degener…
We show that any accelerating Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology with equation of state w < -1/3 (and therefore not only a de Sitter stage with w =-1) exhibits three-dimensional conformal symmetry on future constant-time hypersurfaces. We also offer an alternative derivation of this result in terms of conformal Killing vectors and show that long wavelength comoving curvature perturbations of the perturbed FRW metric are just conformal Killing motions of the FRW background. We then extend theb boundary conformal symmetry to the bulk for accelerating cosmologies. Our findings indicate th…
We present a construction of $κ$-deformed complex scalar field theory with the objective of shedding light on the way discrete symmetries and CPT invariance are affected by the deformation. Our starting point is the observation that, in order to have an appropriate action of Lorentz symmetries on antiparticle states, these should be described by four-momenta living on the complement of the portion of de Sitter group manifold to which $κ$-deformed particle four-momenta belong. Once the equations of motions are properly worked out from the deformed action we obtain that particle and antiparticle…
We show that the propagators of gravitons and scalar fields seen by a static patch observer in de Sitter spacetime are controlled by hidden SL(2,R) symmetries, at all frequencies. The retarded Green's function is determined by an SL(2,R) x SL(2,R) action generated by conformal Killing vectors of de Sitter spacetime times a line. This observation uses the fact that the static patch of dS_{d+1} x R is conformal to the hyperbolic patch of AdS_3 x S^{d-1}. The poles of the propagators, the quasinormal frequencies, are generated by associated SL(2,R) actions. The quasinormal mode generating algebra…
We compute the renormalization group flow of O(N) scalar field theories in de Sitter space using nonperturbative renormalization group techniques in the local potential approximation. We obtain the flow of the effective potential on superhorizon scales for arbitrary space-time dimension D=d+1. We show that, due to strong infrared fluctuations, the latter is qualitatively similar to the corresponding one in Euclidean space with D=0. It follows that spontaneously broken symmetries are radiatively restored in any space-time dimension and for any value of N.
This thesis is organized as follows. In Chapter 2, some preliminaries are given on isometries and conformal symmetries, and we become familiar with the Virasoro algebra. Two examples of classical central charges are discussed. Chapter 3 contains an introduction to the Hamiltonian formulation of gauge theories in the context of Maxwell theory. The knowledge gained in Chapter 3 is applied to general relativity in Chapter 4. The Hamiltonian is shown to acquire a surface term due to the presence of the boundary. The geometrical properties of anti-de Sitter space and the BTZ black hole are the subj…
We present a simple procedure to obtain all de Sitter solutions in the ghost-free massive gravity theory by using the Gordon ansatz. For these solutions the physical metric can be conveniently viewed as describing a hyperboloid in 5D Minkowski space, while the flat reference metric depends on the Stuckelberg field $T(t,r)$ that satisfies the equation $(\partial_t{T})^2-(\partial_r T)^2=1$. This equation has infinitely many solutions, hence there are infinitely many de Sitter vacua with different physical properties. Only the simplest solution with $T=t$ has been previously studied since it is …
We consider a self-interacting scalar field whose mass saturates the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound, minimally coupled to Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant in D \geq 3 dimensions. It is shown that the asymptotic behavior of the metric has a slower fall-off than that of pure gravity with a localized distribution of matter, due to the back-reaction of the scalar field, which has a logarithmic branch decreasing as r^{-(D-1)/2} ln r for large radius r. We find the asymptotic conditions on the fields which are invariant under the same symmetry group as pure gravity with negative …
We demonstrate that the linearized Einstein gravity in de Sitter (dS) spacetime besides the evident symmetries also possesses the additional (local) symmetry $h_{μν}\rightarrow h_{μν} + {\cal E}_{μν}χ$, where ${\cal E}_{μν}$ is a spin-two projector tensor and $χ$ is an arbitrary constant function. We argue that an anomalous symmetry associated with this hitherto `hidden' property of the existing physics is indeed at the origin of `dS breaking' in linearized quantum gravity.
We present the geometry of spacetimes that are tangentially approximated by de Sitter spaces whose cosmological constants vary over spacetime. Cartan geometry provides one with the tools to describe manifolds that reduce to a homogeneous Klein space at the infinitesimal level. We consider a Cartan geometry in which the underlying Klein space is at each point a de Sitter space, for which the combined set of pseudo-radii forms a nonconstant function on spacetime. We show that the torsion of such a geometry receives a contribution that is not present for a cosmological constant. The structure gro…
We analyse the canonical energy of vacuum linearised gravitational fields on light cones on a de Sitter, Minkowski, and Anti de Sitter backgrounds in Bondi gauge. We derive the associated asymptotic symmetries. When $Λ>0$ the energy diverges, but a renormalised formula with well defined flux is obtained. We show that the renormalised energy in the asymptotically off-diagonal gauge coincides with the quadratisation of the generalisation of the Trautman-Bondi mass proposed in [13].
Starting with a new theory of symmetries generated by isometries in field theories with spin, one finds the generators of the spinor representation in backgrounds with a given symmetry. In this manner one obtains a collection of conserved operators from which one can chose the complete sets of commuting operators defining quantum modes. In this framework, the quantum modes of the free Dirac field on de Sitter or anti-de Sitter spacetimes can be completely derived in static or moving charts. One presents the discrete quantum modes, in the central static charts of the anti-de Sitter spacetime, w…
The asymptotic symmetry group of three-dimensional (anti) de Sitter space is the two dimensional conformal group with central charge $c=3\ell/2G$. Usually the asymptotic charge algebra is derived using the symplectic structure of the bulk Einstein equations. Here, we derive the asymptotic charge algebra by a different route. First, we formulate the dynamics of the boundary as a 1+1-dimensional dynamical system. Then we realize the boundary equations of motion as a Hamiltonian system on the dual Lie algebra, $\mathfrak{g}^*$, of the two-dimensional conformal group. Finally, we use the Lie-Poiss…
We further explore the counter-term subtraction definition of charges (e.g., energy) for classical gravitating theories in spacetimes of relevance to gauge/gravity dualities; i.e., in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces and their kin. In particular, we show in general that charges defined via the counter-term subtraction method generate the desired asymptotic symmetries. As a result, they can differ from any other such charges, such as those defined by bulk spacetime-covariant techniques, only by a function of auxiliary non-dynamical structures such as a choice of conformal frame at infinity …
