We compute the renormalization group flow of O(N) scalar field theories in de Sitter space using nonperturbative renormalization group techniques in the local potential approximation. We obtain the flow of the effective potential on superhorizon scales for arbitrary space-time dimension D=d+1. We show that, due to strong infrared fluctuations, the latter is qualitatively similar to the corresponding one in Euclidean space with D=0. It follows that spontaneously broken symmetries are radiatively restored in any space-time dimension and for any value of N.
We investigate scalar field theories in de Sitter space by means of nonperturbative renormalization group techniques. We compute the functional flow equation for the effective potential of O(N) theories in the local potential approximation and we study the onset of curvature-induced effects as quantum fluctuations are progressively integrated out from subhorizon to superhorizon scales. This results in a dimensional reduction of the original action to an effective zero-dimensional Euclidean theory. We show that the latter is equivalent both to the late-time equilibrium state of the stochastic a…
We analyze the chiral phase transition of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the cold and dense region on the lattice developing the Grassmann version of the anisotropic tensor renormalization group algorithm. The model is formulated with the Kogut--Susskind fermion action. We use the chiral condensate as an order parameter to investigate the restoration of the chiral symmetry. The first-order chiral phase transition is clearly observed in the dense region at vanishing temperature with $μ/T\sim O(10^3)$ on a large volume of $V=1024^4$. We also present the results for the equation of state.
The one-loop renormalization of a general chiral gauge theory without scalar and Majorana fields is fully worked out within Breitenlohner and Maison dimensional renormalization scheme. The coefficients of the anomalous terms introduced in the Slavnov-Taylor equations by the minimal subtraction algorithm are calculated and the asymmetric counterterms needed to restore the BRS symmetry, if the anomaly cancellation conditions are met, are computed. The renormalization group equation and its coefficients are worked out in the anomaly free case. The computations draw heavily from the existence of a…
The infrared effects for light minimally coupled scalar fields with quartic self-interaction in de Sitter space is investigated using the 2PI effective action formalism. This formalism partially resums infinite series of loop diagrams, and enables us to circumvent the IR divergence problem for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space. It is anticipated that nonperturbative infrared effects generate a curvature-induced mass and self-regulate the IR divergence. However, due to its nonperturbative nature, the renormalization prescription is a nontrivial task. To calculate phys…
The covariant and gauge invariant calculation of the current expectation value in the homogeneous electric field in 1+3 dimensional de Sitter spacetime is shown. The result accords with previous work obtained by using adiabatic subtraction scheme. We therefore conclude the counterintuitive behaviors of the current in the infrared (IR) regime such as IR hyperconductivity and negative current are not artifacts of the renormalization scheme, but are real IR effects of the spacetime.
The one-loop renormalization of the abelian Higgs-Kibble model in a general 't Hooft gauge and with chiral fermions is fully worked out within dimensional renormalization scheme with a non-anticommuting $γ_5$. The anomalous terms introduced in the Slavnov-Taylor identities by the minimal subtraction algorithm are calculated and the asymmetric counterterms needed to restore the BRS symmetry, if the anomaly cancellation conditions are met, are computed. The computations draw heavily from regularized action principles and Algebraic Renormalization theory.
We considered a new renormalization condition for the vacuum expectation values of the scalar and spinor currents induced by a homogeneous and constant electric field background in de Sitter spacetime. Following a semiclassical argument, the condition named maximal subtraction imposes the exponential suppression on the massive charged particle limit of the renormalized currents. The maximal subtraction changes the behaviors of the induced currents previously obtained by the conventional minimal subtraction scheme. The maximal subtraction is favored for a couple of physically decent predictions…
Symmetry restoration is usually understood as a renormalization group induced phenomenon. In this context, the issue of whether one-loop RG equations can be trusted in predicting symmetry restoration has recently been the subject of much debate. Here we advocate a more pragmatic point of view and expand the definition of symmetry restoration to encompass all situations where the physical properties have only a weak dependence upon an anisotropy in the bare couplings. Moreover we concentrate on universal properties, and so take a scaling limit where the physics is well described by a field theo…
We consider a theory of $N$ self-interacting quantum scalar fields with quartic $O(N)$-symmetric potential, with a coupling constant $λ$, in a generic curved spacetime. We analyze the renormalization process of the Semiclassical Einstein Equations at leading order in the $1/N$ expansion for different renormailzation schemes, namely: the traditional one that sets the geometry of the spacetime to be Minkowski at the renormalization point, and new schemes (originally proposed in [1,2]) which set the geometry to be that of a fixed de Sitter spacetime. In particular, we study the quantum backreacti…
We analyze the renormalization properties of quantum field theories in de Sitter space and show that only two of the maximally invariant vacuum states of free fields lead to consistent perturbation expansions. One is the Euclidean vacuum, and the other can be viewed as an analytic continuation of Euclidean functional integrals on $RP^d$. The corresponding Lorentzian manifold is the future half of global de Sitter space with boundary conditions on fields at the origin of time. We argue that the perturbation series in this case has divergences at the origin, which render the future evolution of …
We perform the resummation of the infrared logarithms in the inflationary universe. Applying the renormalization group, we derive the stochastic equations as the effective theory at the horizon. We focus on the conformal zero mode to respect local Lorentz symmetry. Under Gaussian approximation, we derive the fundamental equation for the Universe (EqU). We also derive the identical equation from the first law of thermodynamics in a dual geometric picture. We believe it is a convincing evidence for de Sitter duality between quantum stochastic physics on the boundary and classical thermodynamics …
We develop a method for treating a series of secularly growing terms obtained from quantum perturbative calculations: autonomous first-order differential equations are constructed such that they reproduce this series to the given order. The exact solutions of these equations are free of secular terms and approach a finite limit at late times. This technique is illustrated for the well-known problem of secular growth of correlation functions of a massless scalar field with a quartic self-interaction in de Sitter space. For the expectation value of the product of two fields at coinciding space-t…
We study the O(N) scalar field theory with quartic self-coupling in de Sitter space. When the field is light in units of the expansion rate, perturbative methods break down at very low momenta due to large infrared logarithmic terms. Using the nonperturbative large-N limit, we compute the four-point vertex function in the deep infrared regime. The resummation of an infinite series of perturbative (bubble) diagrams leads to a modified power law which is analogous to the generation of an anomalous dimension in critical phenomena. We discuss in detail the role of high momentum (subhorizon) modes,…
We study solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to a positive cosmological constant and matter, which are asymptotically de Sitter and homogeneous. Regarded as perturbations of de Sitter space, a theorem of Gao and Wald implies that generically these solutions are `tall,' meaning that the perturbed universe lives through enough conformal time for an entire spherical Cauchy surface to enter any observer's past light cone. Such observers will realize that their universe is spatially compact. An interesting fact, which we demonstrate with an explicit example, is that this Cauchy surface can have a…
Nonperturbative renormalization group techniques have recently proven a powerful tool to tackle the nontrivial infrared dynamics of light scalar fields in de Sitter space. In the present article, we develop the formalism beyond the local potential approximation employed in earlier works. In particular, we consider the derivative expansion, a systematic expansion in powers of field derivatives, appropriate for long wavelength modes, that we generalize to the relevant case of a curved metric with Lorentzian signature. The method is illustrated with a detailed discussion of the so-called local po…
Black hole no-hair theorems are proven using inequalities that govern the radial dependence of spherically symmetric configurations of matter fields. In this paper, we analyze the analogous inequalities for geometries dual to renormalization group flows via the AdS/CFT correspondence. These inequalities give much useful information about the qualitative properties of such flows. For Poincare invariant flows, we show that generic flows of relevant or irrelevant operators lead to singular geometries. For the case of irrelevant operators, this leads to an apparent conflict with Polchinski's decou…
We consider the quantum loop effects in scalar electrodynamics on de Sitter space by making use of the functional renormalization group approach. We first integrate out the photon field, which can be done exactly to leading (zeroth) order in the gradients of the scalar field, thereby making this method suitable for investigating the dynamics of the infrared sector of the theory. Assuming that the scalar remains light we then apply the functional renormalization group methods to the resulting effective scalar theory and focus on investigating the effective potential, which is the leading order …
In this paper time machines are constructed from anti-de Sitter space. One is constructed by identifying points related via boost transformations in the covering space of anti-de Sitter space and it is shown that this Misner-like anti-de Sitter space is just the Lorentzian section of the complex space constructed by Li, Xu, and Liu in 1993. The others are constructed by gluing an anti-de Sitter space to a de Sitter space, which could describe an anti-de Sitter phase bubble living in a de Sitter phase universe. Self-consistent vacua for a massless conformally coupled scalar field are found for …
We present a physical interpretation of machine learning functions, opening up the possibility to control properties of statistical systems via the inclusion of these functions in Hamiltonians. In particular, we include the predictive function of a neural network, designed for phase classification, as a conjugate variable coupled to an external field within the Hamiltonian of a system. Results in the two-dimensional Ising model evidence that the field can induce an order-disorder phase transition by breaking or restoring the symmetry, in contrast with the field of the conventional order parame…
We review the formalism of holographic renormalization. We start by discussing mathematical results on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We then outline the general method of holographic renormalization. The method is illustrated by working all details in a simple example: a massive scalar field on anti-de Sitter spacetime. The discussion includes the derivation of the on-shell renormalized action, of holographic Ward identities, anomalies and RG equations, and the computation of renormalized one-, two- and four-point functions. We then discuss the application of the method to holograp…
We discuss several aspects of the relation between asymptotically AdS and asymptotically dS spacetimes including: the continuation between these types of spaces, the global stability of asymptotically dS spaces and the structure of limits within this class, holographic renormalization, and the maximal mass conjecture of Balasubramanian-deBoer-Minic.
We consider a quantum scalar field with λϕ^4 interaction in curved spacetimes. The quantum effects are taken into account nonperturbatively using the Hartree approximation to the 2PI effective action. Although this approximation has been considered in many previous works, we reconsider it using a consistent nonperturbative renormalization procedure, which we extend to general curved spacetimes. We obtain the renormalized equations for the mean field and for the propagator of the fluctuations, showing explicitly their independence on the arbitrary scale introduced by the regularization scheme. …
We study symmetry breaking in the static coordinate-system of de Sitter space. This is done with the help of the functional-Schrödinger approach used in previous calculations by Ratra [1]. We consider a massless, minimally coupled scalar field as the parameter of a continuous symmetry (the angular component of an O(2) symmetry). Then we study the correlation function of the massless scalar field, to derive the correlation function of the original field, which finally shows the restoration of the continuous symmetry.
We consider higher-derivative quantum gravity where renormalization group improved effective action beyond one-loop approximation is derived. Using this effective action, the quantum-corrected FRW equations are analyzed. De Sitter universe solution is found. It is demonstrated that such de Sitter inflationary universe is instable. The slow-roll inflationary parameters are calculated. The contribution of renormalization group improved Gauss-Bonnet term to quantum-corrected FRW equations as well as to instability of de Sitter universe is estimated. It is demonstrated that in this case the spectr…
We study the dynamics of light quantum scalar fields in de Sitter space on superhorizon scales. We compute the self-energy of an O(N) symmetric theory at next-to-leading order in a 1/N expansion in the regime of superhorizon momenta, and we obtain an exact analytical solution of the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations for the two-point correlator. This amounts to resumming the infinite series of nonlocal self-energy insertions, which typically generate spurious infrared and/or secular divergences. The potentially large de Sitter logarithms resum into well-behaved power laws from which we e…
We study the two-point correlator of an O(N) scalar field with quartic self-coupling in de Sitter space. For light fields in units of the expansion rate, perturbation theory is plagued by large logarithmic terms for superhorizon momenta. We show that a proper treatment of the infinite series of self-energy insertions through the Schwinger-Dyson equations resums these infrared logarithms into well defined power laws. We provide an exact analytical solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equations for infrared momenta when the self-energy is computed at two-loop order. The obtained correlator exhibits a…
We propose supergravity duals to non-trivial fixed points of the renormalization group in three dimensions with ADE global symmetries. All the fixed point symmetries are identified with space-time symmetries.
We study an interacting $λ\,ϕ^4_{\star}$ scalar field defined on Snyder-de Sitter space. Due to the noncommutativity as well as the curvature of this space, the renormalization of the two-point function differs from the commutative case. In particular, we show that the theory in the limit of small curvature and noncommutativity is described by a model similar to the Grosse-Wulkenhaar one. Moreover, very much akin to what happens in the Grosse-Wulkenhaar model, our computation demonstrates that there exists a fixed point in the renormalization group flow of the harmonic and mass terms.
Using the Einstein-Hilbert approximation of asymptotically safe quantum gravity we present a consistent renormalization group based framework for the inclusion of quantum gravitational effects into the cosmological field equations. Relating the renormalization group scale to cosmological time via a dynamical cutoff identification this framework applies to all stages of the cosmological evolution. The very early universe is found to contain a period of ``oscillatory inflation'' with an infinite sequence of time intervals during which the expansion alternates between acceleration and deceleratio…
We present the solution for effective couplings on a running de Sitter brane. A renormalization group formalism is developed for linearized gravity in a two de Sitter brane model. It is shown that the effective tension remains a constant similarly to the zero cosmological constant case. We also discuss the suppression of higher derivative terms.
We use a field theoretic generalization of the Wigner-Weisskopf method to study the stability of the Bunch-Davies vacuum state for a massless, conformally coupled interacting test field in de Sitter space. We find that in $λϕ^4$ theory the vacuum does {\em not} decay, while in non-conformally invariant models, the vacuum decays as a consequence of a vacuum wave function renormalization that depends \emph{singularly} on (conformal) time and is proportional to the spatial volume. In a particular regularization scheme the vacuum wave function renormalization is the same as in Minkowski spacetime,…
We study cosmological solutions of Einstein gravity with a positive cosmological constant in diverse dimensions. These include big-bang models that re-collapse, big-bang models that approach de Sitter acceleration at late times, and bounce models that are both past and future asymptotically de Sitter. The re-collapsing and the bounce geometries are all tall in the sense that entire spatial slices become visible to a comoving observer before the end of conformal time, while the accelerating big-bang geometries can be either short or tall. We consider the interpretation of these cosmological sol…
We investigate the massless $λϕ^4$ theory in de~Sitter space. It is unnatural to assume a minimally coupled interacting scalar field, since $ξ=0$ is not a fixed point of the renormalization group once interactions are included. In fact, the only case where perturbation theory can be trusted is when the field is non-minimally coupled at the minimum of the effective potential. Thus, in perturbation theory, there is no infrared divergence associated with this scalar field.
We investigate nonperturbative infrared effects for the O(N) linear sigma model in de Sitter space using the two-particle irreducible effective action at the Hartree truncation level. This approximation resums the infinite series of so-called superdaisy diagrams. For the proper treatment of ultraviolet divergences, we first study the renormalization of this approximation on a general curved background. Then, we calculate radiatively corrected masses and the effective potential. As a result, spontaneous symmetry breaking is possible, on the other hand, the Goldstone modes acquire a positive def…
First-order `Bogomol'nyi' equations are found for dilaton domain walls of D-dimensional gravity with the general dilaton potential admitting a stable anti-de Sitter vacuum. Implications for renormalization group flow in the holographically dual field theory are discussed.
We present results for in-medium spectral functions obtained within the Functional Renormalization Group framework. The analytic continuation from imaginary to real time is performed in a well-defined way on the level of the flow equations. Based on this recently developed method, results for the sigma and the pion spectral function for the quark-meson model are shown at finite temperature, finite quark-chemical potential and finite spatial momentum. It is shown how these spectral function become degenreate at high temperatures due to the restoration of chiral symmetry. In addition, results fo…
We obtain analytic results for the four-point amplitude, at one loop, of an interacting scalar field theory in four-dimensional, Euclidean anti-de Sitter space without exerting any conformal field theory knowledge. For the two-point function, we provide analytic expressions up to two loops. In addition, we argue that the critical exponents of correlation functions near the conformal boundary of anti-de Sitter space provide the necessary data for the renormalization conditions, thus replacing the usual on-shell condition.
This work deals with braneworld scenarios driven by real scalar fields with standard dynamics. We show how the first-order formalism which exists in the case of four dimensional Minkowski space-time can be extended to de Sitter or anti-de Sitter geometry in the presence of several real scalar fields. We illustrate the results with some examples, and we take advantage of our findings to investigate renormalization group flow. We have found symmetric brane solutions with four-dimensional anti-de Sitter geometry whose holographically dual field theory exhibits a weakly coupled regime at high ener…
We consider the entropy of a quantum scalar field on a background black hole geometry in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time, using the ``brick wall'' approach. In anti-de Sitter space, the theory has no infra-red divergences, and all ultra-violet divergences can be absorbed into a renormalization of the coupling constants in the one-loop effective gravitational Lagrangian. We then calculate the finite renormalized entropy for the Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter and extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black holes, and show that, at least for large black holes, the entropy is entirely …
Perturbative corrections to correlation functions for interacting theories in de Sitter spacetime often grow secularly with time, due to the properties of fluctuations on super-Hubble scales. This growth can lead to a breakdown of perturbation theory at late times. We argue that Dynamical Renormalization Group (DRG) techniques provide a convenient framework for interpreting and resumming these secularly growing terms. In the case of a massless scalar field in de Sitter with quartic self-interaction, the resummed result is also less singular in the infrared, in precisely the manner expected if …
Scalar field theory at finite temperature is investigated via an improved renormalization group prescription which provides an effective resummation over all possible non-overlapping higher loop graphs. Explicit analyses for the lambda phi^4 theory are performed in d=4 Euclidean space for both low and high temperature limits. We generate a set of coupled equations for the mass parameter and the coupling constant from the renormalization group flow equation. Dimensional reduction and symmetry restoration are also explored with our improved approach.
We analyze the running gauge coupling at finite temperature for QCD, using the functional renormalization group. The running of the coupling is calculated for all scales and temperatures. At finite temperature, the coupling is governed by a fixed point of the 3-dimensional theory for scales smaller than the corresponding temperature. The running coupling can drive the quark sector to criticality, resulting in chiral symmetry breaking. Our results provide for a quantitative determination of the phase boundary in the plane of temperature and number of massless flavors. Using the experimental val…
We explore the conditions for chiral symmetry breaking in reduced (or pseudo) quantum electrodynamics at finite temperature in connection with graphene and other 2D-materials with an underlying Dirac behavior of the charge carriers. By solving the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation in rainbow approximation, in a Landau-like gauge and neglecting wavefunction renormalization effects, we find the need of the coupling to exceed a critical value $α_c$ in order for chiral symmetry to be broken, in agreement with known results from other groups. In this supercritical regime, we add the effects of…
The possibility to construct inflationary models for the renormalization-group improved potentials corresponding to scalar electrodynamics and to $SU(2)$ and $SU(5)$ models is investigated. In all cases, the tree-level potential, which corresponds to the cosmological constant in the Einstein frame, is seen to be non-suitable for inflation. Rather than adding the Hilbert-Einstein term to the action, quantum corrections to the potential, coming from to the RG-equation, are included. The inflationary scenario is analyzed with unstable de Sitter solutions which correspond to positive values of the…
Holographic Renormalization Group (RG) in nine dimensions is considered. The d8 holographic conformal anomaly is found. It should correspond to d8 CFT in AdS_9/CFT_8 correspondence. The comparison of holographic and QFT anomalies in d8 de Sitter space is done. It may give the indication for rigorous AdS_9/CFT_8 correspondence proposal.
Perturbative quantum field theory in de Sitter space is known to give rise to a variety of contributions that diverge with time (secular terms). Despite significant progress, a complete understanding of the physical origin of these divergences remains an outstanding problem. In this paper, we will study the origin of secular divergences in de Sitter space for interacting theories that are near attractive conformal fixed points. We show that the secular divergences are determined by the anomalous dimensions of the same theory in flat space and can be re-summed using the dynamical renormalizatio…
Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space can be foliated by a family of nested surfaces homeomorphic to the boundary of the space. We propose a holographic correspondence between theories living on each surface in the foliation and quantum gravity in the enclosed volume. The flow of observables between our ``interior'' theories is described by a renormalization group equation. The dependence of these flows on the foliation of space encodes bulk geometry.
We obtain first order equations that determine a supersymmetric kink solution in five-dimensional N=8 gauged supergravity. The kink interpolates between an exterior anti-de Sitter region with maximal supersymmetry and an interior anti-de Sitter region with one quarter of the maximal supersymmetry. One eighth of supersymmetry is preserved by the kink as a whole. We interpret it as describing the renormalization group flow in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory broken to an N=1 theory by the addition of a mass term for one of the three adjoint chiral superfields. A detailed correspondence is obtained be…
We consider quantum effects of a massive antisymmetric tensor field on the dynamics of de Sitter space-time. Our starting point is the most general, stable, linearized Lagrangian arising in nonsymmetric gravitational theories (NGTs), where part of the antisymmetric field mass is generated by the cosmological term. We construct a renormalization group (RG) improved effective action by integrating out one loop vacuum fluctuations of the antisymmetric tensor field and show that, in the limit when the RG scale goes to zero, the Hubble parameter -- and thus the effective cosmological constant -- re…
A critical examination is made of two simple implementations of the idea that cosmology can be viewed as a renormalization group flow. Both implementations are shown to fail when applied to a massless, minimally coupled scalar with a quartic self-interaction on a locally de Sitter background. Cosmological evolution in this model is not driven by any RG screening of couplings but rather by inflationary particle production gradually filling an initially empty universe with a sea of long wavelength scalars.
The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) is a tensor network representation for ground states of critical quantum spin chains, with a network that extends in an additional dimension corresponding to scale. Over the years several authors have conjectured, both in the context of holography and cosmology, that MERA realizes a discrete version of some geometry. However, while one proposal argued that the tensor network should be interpreted as representing the hyperbolic plane, another proposal instead equated MERA to de Sitter spacetime. In this \letter we show, using the framew…
The scale invariance of the quantum fluctuations in de Sitter space leads to the appearance of de Sitter symmetry breaking infra-red logarithms in the graviton propagator. We investigate physical effects of soft gravitons on the local dynamics of matter fields well inside the cosmological horizon. We show that the IR logarithms do not spoil Lorentz invariance in scalar and Dirac field theory. The leading IR logarithms can be absorbed by a time dependent wave function renormalization factor in the both cases. In the interacting field theory with $λϕ^4$ and Yukawa interaction, we find that the c…
