We develop a method for treating a series of secularly growing terms obtained from quantum perturbative calculations: autonomous first-order differential equations are constructed such that they reproduce this series to the given order. The exact solutions of these equations are free of secular terms and approach a finite limit at late times. This technique is illustrated for the well-known problem of secular growth of correlation functions of a massless scalar field with a quartic self-interaction in de Sitter space. For the expectation value of the product of two fields at coinciding space-time points we obtain a finite late-time result that is very close to the one following from Starobinsky's stochastic approach.
There are at least three different types of secular effects in the two-point correlation functions in scalar quantum field theories in de Sitter space-time. The first one is specific to de Sitter massless and tachyonic minimally coupled scalar fields. The remaining two are generic and are encountered practically in any non-stationary situation in quantum field theory. Furthermore there are secular effects in the n-point correlation functions for low enough mass. They are also specific to de Sitter quantum field theory. In this paper we focus on the differences between the secular effects in tw…

We analyze the long distance behavior of the two-point functions for an interacting scalar $O(N)$ model in de Sitter spacetime. Following our previous work, this behavior is analyzed by analytic continuation of the Euclidean correlators, which are computed by treating the homogeneous zero mode exactly and using a partial resummation of the interactions between the zero and the non-zero modes. We focus on massless fields and present an alternative derivation of our method, which involves a double expansion in $1/N$ and the coupling constant of the theory. This derivation is simpler than the pre…
We revisit the issues of non-linear AdS stability, its relation to growing (secular) terms in naive perturbation theory around the AdS background, and the need and possible strategies for resumming such terms. To this end, we review a powerful and elegant resummation method, which is mathematically identical to the standard renormalization group treatment of ultraviolet divergences in perturbative quantum field theory. We apply this method to non-linear gravitational perturbation theory in the AdS background at first non-trivial order and display the detailed structure of the emerging renormal…
The quantum evolution equations for the field expectation value are analytically solved to cubic order in the field amplitude and to one-loop level in the lambda phi-fourth model. We adapt and use the renormalization group (RG) method for such non-linear and non-local equations. The time dependence of the field expectation value is explicitly derived integrating the RG equations. It is shown that the field amplitude for late times approaches a finite limit as the time to the power -3/2. This limiting value is expressed as a function of the initial field amplitude.
Perturbative corrections to correlation functions for interacting theories in de Sitter spacetime often grow secularly with time, due to the properties of fluctuations on super-Hubble scales. This growth can lead to a breakdown of perturbation theory at late times. We argue that Dynamical Renormalization Group (DRG) techniques provide a convenient framework for interpreting and resumming these secularly growing terms. In the case of a massless scalar field in de Sitter with quartic self-interaction, the resummed result is also less singular in the infrared, in precisely the manner expected if …
Perturbative quantum field theory in de Sitter space is known to give rise to a variety of contributions that diverge with time (secular terms). Despite significant progress, a complete understanding of the physical origin of these divergences remains an outstanding problem. In this paper, we will study the origin of secular divergences in de Sitter space for interacting theories that are near attractive conformal fixed points. We show that the secular divergences are determined by the anomalous dimensions of the same theory in flat space and can be re-summed using the dynamical renormalizatio…
We considered a new renormalization condition for the vacuum expectation values of the scalar and spinor currents induced by a homogeneous and constant electric field background in de Sitter spacetime. Following a semiclassical argument, the condition named maximal subtraction imposes the exponential suppression on the massive charged particle limit of the renormalized currents. The maximal subtraction changes the behaviors of the induced currents previously obtained by the conventional minimal subtraction scheme. The maximal subtraction is favored for a couple of physically decent predictions…
We perform the resummation of the infrared logarithms in the inflationary universe. Applying the renormalization group, we derive the stochastic equations as the effective theory at the horizon. We focus on the conformal zero mode to respect local Lorentz symmetry. Under Gaussian approximation, we derive the fundamental equation for the Universe (EqU). We also derive the identical equation from the first law of thermodynamics in a dual geometric picture. We believe it is a convincing evidence for de Sitter duality between quantum stochastic physics on the boundary and classical thermodynamics …
The covariant and gauge invariant calculation of the current expectation value in the homogeneous electric field in 1+3 dimensional de Sitter spacetime is shown. The result accords with previous work obtained by using adiabatic subtraction scheme. We therefore conclude the counterintuitive behaviors of the current in the infrared (IR) regime such as IR hyperconductivity and negative current are not artifacts of the renormalization scheme, but are real IR effects of the spacetime.
In this work, we present a numerical scheme to study the quasinormal modes of the time-dependent Vaidya black hole metric in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. The proposed algorithm is primarily based on a generalized matrix method for quasinormal modes. The main feature of the present approach is that the quasinormal frequency, as a function of time, is obtained by a generalized secular equation and therefore a satisfactory degree of precision is achieved. The implications of the results are discussed.
Perturbation theory is a crucial tool for many physical systems, when exact solutions are not available, or nonperturbative numerical solutions are intractable. Naive perturbation theory often fails on long timescales, leading to secularly growing solutions. These divergences have been treated with a variety of techniques, including the powerful dynamical renormalization group (DRG). Most of the existing DRG approaches rely on having analytic solutions up to some order in perturbation theory. However, sometimes the equations can only be solved numerically. We reformulate the DRG in the languag…
Nonperturbative renormalization group techniques have recently proven a powerful tool to tackle the nontrivial infrared dynamics of light scalar fields in de Sitter space. In the present article, we develop the formalism beyond the local potential approximation employed in earlier works. In particular, we consider the derivative expansion, a systematic expansion in powers of field derivatives, appropriate for long wavelength modes, that we generalize to the relevant case of a curved metric with Lorentzian signature. The method is illustrated with a detailed discussion of the so-called local po…
We consider a theory of $N$ self-interacting quantum scalar fields with quartic $O(N)$-symmetric potential, with a coupling constant $λ$, in a generic curved spacetime. We analyze the renormalization process of the Semiclassical Einstein Equations at leading order in the $1/N$ expansion for different renormailzation schemes, namely: the traditional one that sets the geometry of the spacetime to be Minkowski at the renormalization point, and new schemes (originally proposed in [1,2]) which set the geometry to be that of a fixed de Sitter spacetime. In particular, we study the quantum backreacti…
We compute the renormalization group flow of O(N) scalar field theories in de Sitter space using nonperturbative renormalization group techniques in the local potential approximation. We obtain the flow of the effective potential on superhorizon scales for arbitrary space-time dimension D=d+1. We show that, due to strong infrared fluctuations, the latter is qualitatively similar to the corresponding one in Euclidean space with D=0. It follows that spontaneously broken symmetries are radiatively restored in any space-time dimension and for any value of N.
The infrared effects for light minimally coupled scalar fields with quartic self-interaction in de Sitter space is investigated using the 2PI effective action formalism. This formalism partially resums infinite series of loop diagrams, and enables us to circumvent the IR divergence problem for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in de Sitter space. It is anticipated that nonperturbative infrared effects generate a curvature-induced mass and self-regulate the IR divergence. However, due to its nonperturbative nature, the renormalization prescription is a nontrivial task. To calculate phys…
We analyze the renormalization properties of quantum field theories in de Sitter space and show that only two of the maximally invariant vacuum states of free fields lead to consistent perturbation expansions. One is the Euclidean vacuum, and the other can be viewed as an analytic continuation of Euclidean functional integrals on $RP^d$. The corresponding Lorentzian manifold is the future half of global de Sitter space with boundary conditions on fields at the origin of time. We argue that the perturbation series in this case has divergences at the origin, which render the future evolution of …
We investigate scalar field theories in de Sitter space by means of nonperturbative renormalization group techniques. We compute the functional flow equation for the effective potential of O(N) theories in the local potential approximation and we study the onset of curvature-induced effects as quantum fluctuations are progressively integrated out from subhorizon to superhorizon scales. This results in a dimensional reduction of the original action to an effective zero-dimensional Euclidean theory. We show that the latter is equivalent both to the late-time equilibrium state of the stochastic a…
Massless minimally coupled quantum scalar field with an asymmetric self interaction, $V(ϕ)=λϕ^4/4!+ βϕ^3/3! $ (with $λ>0$) is considered in the $(3+1)$-dimensional inflationary de Sitter spacetime. This potential is bounded from below irrespective of the sign of $β$. Earlier computations mostly considered the quartic part. Our chief motivation behind this study is to assess the vacuum expectation values of $V(ϕ)$ and $ϕ$, both of which can be negative, and hence may lead to some screening of the inflationary cosmological constant value. First using the in-in formalism, the renormalised quantum…
We consider a quantum scalar field with λϕ^4 interaction in curved spacetimes. The quantum effects are taken into account nonperturbatively using the Hartree approximation to the 2PI effective action. Although this approximation has been considered in many previous works, we reconsider it using a consistent nonperturbative renormalization procedure, which we extend to general curved spacetimes. We obtain the renormalized equations for the mean field and for the propagator of the fluctuations, showing explicitly their independence on the arbitrary scale introduced by the regularization scheme. …
We study solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to a positive cosmological constant and matter, which are asymptotically de Sitter and homogeneous. Regarded as perturbations of de Sitter space, a theorem of Gao and Wald implies that generically these solutions are `tall,' meaning that the perturbed universe lives through enough conformal time for an entire spherical Cauchy surface to enter any observer's past light cone. Such observers will realize that their universe is spatially compact. An interesting fact, which we demonstrate with an explicit example, is that this Cauchy surface can have a…
We consider the quantum loop effects in scalar electrodynamics on de Sitter space by making use of the functional renormalization group approach. We first integrate out the photon field, which can be done exactly to leading (zeroth) order in the gradients of the scalar field, thereby making this method suitable for investigating the dynamics of the infrared sector of the theory. Assuming that the scalar remains light we then apply the functional renormalization group methods to the resulting effective scalar theory and focus on investigating the effective potential, which is the leading order …
We present a method to compute the two-point functions for an $O(N)$ scalar field model in de Sitter spacetime, avoiding the well known infrared problems for massless fields. The method is based on an exact treatment of the Euclidean zero modes and a perturbative one of the nonzero modes, and involves a partial resummation of the leading secular terms. This resummation, crucial to obtain a decay of the correlation functions, is implemented along with a double expansion in an effective coupling constant $\sqrtλ$ and in $1/N$. The results reduce to those known in the leading infrared approximati…
In this paper time machines are constructed from anti-de Sitter space. One is constructed by identifying points related via boost transformations in the covering space of anti-de Sitter space and it is shown that this Misner-like anti-de Sitter space is just the Lorentzian section of the complex space constructed by Li, Xu, and Liu in 1993. The others are constructed by gluing an anti-de Sitter space to a de Sitter space, which could describe an anti-de Sitter phase bubble living in a de Sitter phase universe. Self-consistent vacua for a massless conformally coupled scalar field are found for …
Black hole no-hair theorems are proven using inequalities that govern the radial dependence of spherically symmetric configurations of matter fields. In this paper, we analyze the analogous inequalities for geometries dual to renormalization group flows via the AdS/CFT correspondence. These inequalities give much useful information about the qualitative properties of such flows. For Poincare invariant flows, we show that generic flows of relevant or irrelevant operators lead to singular geometries. For the case of irrelevant operators, this leads to an apparent conflict with Polchinski's decou…
We review the formalism of holographic renormalization. We start by discussing mathematical results on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We then outline the general method of holographic renormalization. The method is illustrated by working all details in a simple example: a massive scalar field on anti-de Sitter spacetime. The discussion includes the derivation of the on-shell renormalized action, of holographic Ward identities, anomalies and RG equations, and the computation of renormalized one-, two- and four-point functions. We then discuss the application of the method to holograp…
We discuss several aspects of the relation between asymptotically AdS and asymptotically dS spacetimes including: the continuation between these types of spaces, the global stability of asymptotically dS spaces and the structure of limits within this class, holographic renormalization, and the maximal mass conjecture of Balasubramanian-deBoer-Minic.
We study cosmological solutions of Einstein gravity with a positive cosmological constant in diverse dimensions. These include big-bang models that re-collapse, big-bang models that approach de Sitter acceleration at late times, and bounce models that are both past and future asymptotically de Sitter. The re-collapsing and the bounce geometries are all tall in the sense that entire spatial slices become visible to a comoving observer before the end of conformal time, while the accelerating big-bang geometries can be either short or tall. We consider the interpretation of these cosmological sol…
A recent paper by Fröb employs the linearized Weyl-Weyl correlator to construct the tensor power spectrum. Although his purpose was to argue that infrared divergences and secular growth in the graviton propagator are gauge artefacts, a closer examination of the problem leads to the opposite conclusion. The analogies with the BMS symmetries of graviton scattering on a flat background, and with the Aharonov-Bohm effect of quantum mechanics, suggest that de Sitter breaking secular growth is likely to be observable in graviton loop effects. And a recent result for the vacuum polarization does seem…
We investigate the massless $λϕ^4$ theory in de~Sitter space. It is unnatural to assume a minimally coupled interacting scalar field, since $ξ=0$ is not a fixed point of the renormalization group once interactions are included. In fact, the only case where perturbation theory can be trusted is when the field is non-minimally coupled at the minimum of the effective potential. Thus, in perturbation theory, there is no infrared divergence associated with this scalar field.
We consider an $O(N)$ scalar field model with quartic interaction in $d$-dimensional Euclidean de Sitter space. In order to avoid the problems of the standard perturbative calculations for light and massless fields, we generalize to the $O(N)$ theory a systematic method introduced previously for a single field, which treats the zero modes exactly and the nonzero modes perturbatively. We compute the two-point functions taking into account not only the leading infrared contribution, coming from the self-interaction of the zero modes, but also corrections due to the interaction of the ultraviolet…
Temporal evolution of a comoving qubit coupled to a scalar field in de Sitter space is studied with an emphasis on reliable extraction of late-time behaviour. The phenomenon of critical slowing down is observed if the effective mass is chosen to be sufficiently close to zero, which narrows the window of parameter space in which the Markovian approximation is valid. The dynamics of the system in this case are solved in a more general setting by accounting for non-Markovian effects in the evolution of the qubit state. Self-interactions for the scalar field are also incorporated, and reveal a bre…
Higher-derivative corrections to cosmological effective actions in string theory are largely constrained by T-duality, but have been computed hitherto only to the first few orders in the string scale $α'$. The functional renormalization group, in conjunction with the strong constraints imposed by T-duality, allows to derive cosmological effective actions to all orders in $α'$ while avoiding "truncations" of the theory space. We show that the resulting higher-derivative $α'$-corrections forbid the existence of de Sitter vacua, at least in regimes where string-loop corrections can be neglected. …
We study the infrared (large separation) behavior of a massless minimally coupled scalar quantum field theory with a quartic self interaction in de Sitter spacetime. We show that the perturbation series in the interaction strength is singular and secular, i.e. it does not lead to a uniform approximation of the solution in the infrared region. Only a nonperturbative resummation can capture the correct infrared behavior. We seek to justify this picture using the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the ladder-rainbow approximation. We are able to write down an ordinary differential equation obeyed by th…
We consider the semiclassical Einstein equations (SEE) in the presence of a quantum scalar field with self-interaction $λϕ^4$. Working in the Hartree truncation of the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action, we compute the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field, which act as a source of the SEE. We obtain the renormalized SEE by implementing a consistent renormalization procedure. We apply our results to find self-consistent de Sitter solutions to the SEE in situations with or without spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$-symmetry.
We develop a stochastic approach to a non de Sitter Universe in a gauge-invariant way and obtain a system of Langevin-type equations which may be considered to be renormalization group equations for the long wave parts of the scalar fields and metric. We investigate in detail the case of generalized power-law inflation that appears in the model of the deflationary exit from the inflationary stage. For this case the above system is simplified greatly, we derive a Fokker-Planck equation for the scalar field driving inflation, find its stationary solutions and solve the FP equation for a delta-fu…
We consider the entropy of a quantum scalar field on a background black hole geometry in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time, using the ``brick wall'' approach. In anti-de Sitter space, the theory has no infra-red divergences, and all ultra-violet divergences can be absorbed into a renormalization of the coupling constants in the one-loop effective gravitational Lagrangian. We then calculate the finite renormalized entropy for the Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter and extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black holes, and show that, at least for large black holes, the entropy is entirely …
We study the dynamics of light quantum scalar fields in de Sitter space on superhorizon scales. We compute the self-energy of an O(N) symmetric theory at next-to-leading order in a 1/N expansion in the regime of superhorizon momenta, and we obtain an exact analytical solution of the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations for the two-point correlator. This amounts to resumming the infinite series of nonlocal self-energy insertions, which typically generate spurious infrared and/or secular divergences. The potentially large de Sitter logarithms resum into well-behaved power laws from which we e…
In classical and quantum systems, perturbation of an evolution equation is often invalidated by secular terms which diverge at late times. The diverging behavior of evolution can be remedied by various techniques of resumma- tion such as renormalization group or multi-scale analysis. In this paper, we prove that, in a generic quantum mechanical system, secular terms can be systematically removed to all orders in the Dyson series by the method of improved (renormalized) perturbation. A recurrence relation to provide an explicit method to remove the secular terms is given. As a byproduct, we giv…
We propose supergravity duals to non-trivial fixed points of the renormalization group in three dimensions with ADE global symmetries. All the fixed point symmetries are identified with space-time symmetries.
We present the solution for effective couplings on a running de Sitter brane. A renormalization group formalism is developed for linearized gravity in a two de Sitter brane model. It is shown that the effective tension remains a constant similarly to the zero cosmological constant case. We also discuss the suppression of higher derivative terms.
We investigate quantum fluctuations on a de Sitter (dS) brane, which has its own thickness, in order to examine whether or not the finite thickness of the brane can act as a natural cut-off for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectrum. We calculate the amplitude of the KK modes and the bound state by using the zeta function method after a dimensional reduction. We show that the KK amplitude is finite for a given brane thickness and in the thin wall limit the standard surface divergent behavior is recovered. The strength of the divergence in the thin wall limit depends on the number of dimensions, e.g., l…
We investigate the fermionic condensate and the vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor for a massive spinor field in de Sitter spacetime with spatial topology $\mathrm{R}^{p}\times (\mathrm{S}^{1})^{q}$. Both cases of periodicity and antiperiodicity conditions along the compactified dimensions are considered. By using the Abel-Plana formula, the topological parts are explicitly extracted from the vacuum expectation values. In this way the renormalization is reduced to the renormalization procedure in uncompactified de Sitter spacetime. It is shown that in the uncompactified su…
The DC electrical conductivity of an ultrarelativistic QED plasma is studied in real time by implementing the dynamical renormalization group. The conductivity is obtained from the realtime dependence of a dissipative kernel related to the retarded photon polarization. Pinch singularities in the imaginary part of the polarization are manifest as growing secular terms that in the perturbative expansion of this kernel. The leading secular terms are studied explicitly and it is shown that they are insensitive to the anomalous damping of hard fermions as a result of a cancellation between self-ene…
We study the O(N) scalar field theory with quartic self-coupling in de Sitter space. When the field is light in units of the expansion rate, perturbative methods break down at very low momenta due to large infrared logarithmic terms. Using the nonperturbative large-N limit, we compute the four-point vertex function in the deep infrared regime. The resummation of an infinite series of perturbative (bubble) diagrams leads to a modified power law which is analogous to the generation of an anomalous dimension in critical phenomena. We discuss in detail the role of high momentum (subhorizon) modes,…
We report on an investigation of Ruppeiner curvature $R_U$ for $(d+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetimes and its connection with Renormalization Group (RG) flows in the dual d-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) in Minkowski spacetimes. A repulsive type interaction among microstructures is found, which is weaker for positive mass black holes and grows stronger for negative mass black holes at low temperatures. In particular, we show that $R_U$ evaluated along a zero mass curve is a universal constant, depending only on the dimension of space-time. The extr…
First-order `Bogomol'nyi' equations are found for dilaton domain walls of D-dimensional gravity with the general dilaton potential admitting a stable anti-de Sitter vacuum. Implications for renormalization group flow in the holographically dual field theory are discussed.
Using the Einstein-Hilbert approximation of asymptotically safe quantum gravity we present a consistent renormalization group based framework for the inclusion of quantum gravitational effects into the cosmological field equations. Relating the renormalization group scale to cosmological time via a dynamical cutoff identification this framework applies to all stages of the cosmological evolution. The very early universe is found to contain a period of ``oscillatory inflation'' with an infinite sequence of time intervals during which the expansion alternates between acceleration and deceleratio…
It is shown that the addition of a topological invariant (Gauss-Bonnet term) to the anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity action in four dimensions recovers the standard regularization given by holographic renormalization procedure. This crucial step makes possible the inclusion of an odd parity invariant (Pontryagin term) whose coupling is fixed by demanding an asymptotic (anti) self-dual condition on the Weyl tensor. This argument allows to find the dual point of the theory where the holographic stress tensor is related to the boundary Cotton tensor as $T_{j}^{i}=\pm (\ell ^{2}/8πG)C_{j}^{i}$, which …
We obtain analytic results for the four-point amplitude, at one loop, of an interacting scalar field theory in four-dimensional, Euclidean anti-de Sitter space without exerting any conformal field theory knowledge. For the two-point function, we provide analytic expressions up to two loops. In addition, we argue that the critical exponents of correlation functions near the conformal boundary of anti-de Sitter space provide the necessary data for the renormalization conditions, thus replacing the usual on-shell condition.
Within the functional renormalization group approach to Background Independent quantum gravity, we explore the scale dependent effective geometry of the de Sitter solution dS${}_4$. The investigation employs a novel approach whose essential ingredient is a modified spectral flow of the metric dependent d'Alembertian, or of similar hyperbolic kinetic operators. The corresponding one-parameter family of spectra and eigenfunctions encodes information about the nonperturbative backreaction of the dynamically gravitating vacuum fluctuations on the mean field geometry of the quantum spacetime. Used …
We consider higher-derivative quantum gravity where renormalization group improved effective action beyond one-loop approximation is derived. Using this effective action, the quantum-corrected FRW equations are analyzed. De Sitter universe solution is found. It is demonstrated that such de Sitter inflationary universe is instable. The slow-roll inflationary parameters are calculated. The contribution of renormalization group improved Gauss-Bonnet term to quantum-corrected FRW equations as well as to instability of de Sitter universe is estimated. It is demonstrated that in this case the spectr…
The two-point function for tensor metric perturbations around de Sitter spacetime including one-loop corrections from massless conformally coupled scalar fields is calculated exactly. We work in the Poincaré patch (with spatially flat sections) and employ dimensional regularization for the renormalization process. Unlike previous studies we obtain the result for arbitrary time separations rather than just equal times. Moreover, in contrast to existing results for tensor perturbations, ours is manifestly invariant with respect to the subgroup of de Sitter isometries corresponding to a simultane…
