In this note, a numerical method based on finite differences to solve a class of nonlinear advection-diffusion fractional differential equation is proposed. The fractional operator considered here is the fractional Riemann-Liouville derivative or the fractional Riesz derivative of order $α$. The consistency and unconditionally stability of the method are shown. Finally, an example of application of this method is presented.
In this article, we prove Carleman estimates for the generalized time-fractional advection-diffusion equations by considering the fractional derivative as perturbation for the first order time-derivative. As a direct application of the Carleman estimates, we show a conditional stability of a lateral Cauchy problem for the time-fractional advection-diffusion equation, and we also investigate the stability of an inverse source problem.
We establish the well-posedness of an initial-boundary value problem for a general class of time-fractional, advection-diffusion-reaction equations, allowing space- and time-dependent coefficients as well as initial data that may have low regularity. Our analysis relies on novel energy methods in combination with a fractional Gronwall inequality and properties of fractional integrals.
We investigate the behavior of the time derivatives of the solution to a linear time-fractional, advection-diffusion-reaction equation, allowing space- and time-dependent coefficients as well as initial data that may have low regularity. Our focus is on proving estimates that are needed for the error analysis of numerical methods. The nonlocal nature of the fractional derivative creates substantial difficulties compared with the case of a classical parabolic PDE. In our analysis, we rely on novel energy methods in combination with a fractional Gronwall inequality and certain properties of frac…
We consider initial boundary value problems of time-fractional advection-diffusion equations with the zero Dirichlet boundary value $\partial_t^α u(x,t) = -Au(x,t)$, where $-A = \sum}{i,j=1}^d \partial_i(a_{ij}(x)\partial_j) + \sum{j=1}^d b_j(x)\partial_j + c(x)$. We establish the uniqueness for an inverse problem of determining an order $α$ of fractional derivatives by data $u(x_0,t)$ for $0<t<T$ at one point $x_0$ in a spatial domain $\OOO$. The uniqueness holds even under assumption that $\OOO$ and $A$ are unknown, provided that the initial value does not change signs and is not identically…
In this paper, we first establish a weak unique continuation property for time-fractional diffusion-advection equations. The proof is mainly based on the Laplace transform and the unique continuation properties for elliptic and parabolic equations. The result is weaker than its parabolic counterpart in the sense that we additionally impose the homogeneous boundary condition. As a direct application, we prove the uniqueness for an inverse problem on determining the spatial component in the source term in by interior measurements. Numerically, we reformulate our inverse source problem as an opti…
The main contribution of this paper is twofold: (1) Recently, Iyer, Xu, and Zlatoš studied the dissipation enhancement by cellular flows based on standard advection-diffusion equations via a stochastic method. We generalize their results to advective hyper-diffusion equations and advective nonlinear diffusion equations. (2) We prove there exist smooth incompressible flows that are relaxation enhancing to hyper-diffusion but not to standard diffusion.
This paper presents boundary observer design for space and time dependent reaction-advection-diffusion equations using backstepping method. The method uses only a single measurement at the boundary of the systems. The existence of the observer kernel equation is proved using the method of successive approximation.
In this article, for an advection-diffusion equation we study an inverse problem for restoration of source temperature from the information of final temperature profile. The uniqueness of this inverse problem is established by taking an integral transform and using Liouville's theorem (complex analysis).
In this paper subgrid multiscale stabilized finite element method for Advection-Diffusion-Reaction (ADR) equation coupled with Stokes-Darcy flow problem has been studied. Here the advection velocity involved in ADR equation obeys Stokes-Darcy flow equation. In this study the approach of algebraic approximation of stabilization parameter has been considered. Further apriori error estimation has been elaborately carried out.
This paper contains two main contributions. First, it provides optimal stability estimates for advection-diffusion equations in a setting in which the velocity field is Sobolev regular in the spatial variable. This estimate is formulated with the help of Kantorovich--Rubinstein distances with logarithmic cost functions. Second, the stability estimates are extended to the advection-diffusion equations with velocity fields whose gradients are singular integrals of $L^1$ functions entailing a new well-posedness result.
In this work I show how a diffusion-advection equation in three space-dimensions may have its advection term weakly limited to a velocity field localized to a moving curve. This is rigorously accomplished through the technique of concentrated capacity, and the form of the concentrated capacity limit along with small time existence of solutions is determined. This problem is motivated by mathematical biology and the study of proteins in solvent where the latter is modeled as a diffusing quantity and the protein is taken to be a 1d object which advects the solvent by contact and its own motion. …
We analyze the effect of nonlinear boundary conditions on an advection-diffusion equation on the half-line. Our model is inspired by models for crystal growth where diffusion models diffusive relaxation of a displacement field, advection is induced by apical growth, and boundary conditions incorporate non-adiabatic effects on displacement at the boundary. The equation, in particular the boundary fluxes, possesses a discrete gauge symmetry, and we study the role of simple, entire solutions, here periodic, homoclinic, or heteroclinic relative to this gauge symmetry, in the global dynamics.
We discuss the effects of movement and spatial heterogeneity on population dynamics via reaction-diffusion-advection models, focusing on the persistence, competition, and evolution of organisms in spatially heterogeneous environments. Topics include Lokta-Volterra competition models, river models, evolution of biased movement, phytoplankton growth, and spatial spread of epidemic disease. Open problems and conjectures are presented.
We discuss $L^p$ integrability estimates for the solution $u$ of the advection-diffusion equation $\partial_t u + \mathrm{div} (bu) = Δu$, where the velocity field $b \in L^r_t L^q_x$. We first summarize some classical results proving such estimates for certain ranges of the exponents $r$ and $q$. Afterwards we prove the optimality of such ranges by means of new original examples.
In this paper, we show that unbalanced optimal transport provides a convenient framework to handle reaction and diffusion processes in a unified metric framework. We use a constructive method, alternating minimizing movements for the Wasserstein distance and for the Fisher-Rao distance, and prove existence of weak solutions for general scalar reaction-diffusion-advection equations. We extend the approach to systems of multiple interacting species, and also consider an application to a very degenerate diffusion problem involving a Gamma-limit. Moreover, some numerical simulations are included.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a generalized parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel equation with fractional dissipation and the additional mixing effect of advection by an incompressible flow. Under suitable mixing condition on the advection, we study well-posedness of solution with large initial data. We establish the global $L^\infty$ estimate of the solution through nonlinear maximum principle, and obtain the global classical solution.
This paper considers the existence of local and global-in-time strong solutions to the advection-diffusion equation with variable coefficients on an evolving surface with a boundary. We apply both the maximal $L^p$-in-time regularity for Hilbert space-valued functions and the semigroup theory to construct local and global-in-time strong solutions to an evolution equation. Using the approach and our function spaces on the evolving surface, we show the existence of local and global-in-time strong solutions to the advection-diffusion equation. Moreover, we derive the asymptotic stability of the g…
This article provides techniques of raising the regularity of fractional order equations and resolves fundamental questions on the one-dimensional homogeneous boundary-value problem of skewed (double-sided) fractional diffusion advection reaction equation (FDARE) with variable coefficients on the bounded interval. The existence of the true (classical) solution together with norm estimation is established and the precise regularity bound is found; also, the structure of the solution is unraveled, capturing the essence of regularity, singularity, and other features of the solution. The key analy…
This is the second part of our study of the Inertial Manifolds for 1D systems of reaction-diffusion-advection equations initiated in \cite{KZI} and it is devoted to the case of periodic boundary conditions. It is shown that, in contrast to the case of Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, considered in the first part, Inertial Manifolds may not exist in the case of systems endowed by periodic boundary conditions. However, as also shown, inertial manifolds still exist in the case of scalar reaction-diffusion-advection equations. Thus, the existence or non-existence of inertial manifolds for…
Non-local advection is a key process in a range of biological systems, from cells within individuals to the movement of whole organisms. Consequently, in recent years, there has been increasing attention on modelling non-local advection mathematically. These often take the form of partial differential equations, with integral terms modelling the non-locality. One common formalism is the aggregation-diffusion equation, a class of advection diffusion models with non-local advection. This was originally used to model a single population, but has recently been extended to the multi-species case to…
In this paper, we prove some qualitative properties of pushed fronts for the periodic reaction-diffusion-equation with general monostable nonlinearities. Especially, we prove the exponential behavior of pushed fronts when they are approaching their unstable state. The proof also allows us to get the exponential behavior of pulsating fronts with speed $c$ larger than the minimal speed. Through the exponential behavior, we finally prove the stability of pushed fronts.
In this paper, by combining of fractional centered difference approach with alternating direction implicit method, we introduce a mixed difference method for solving two-dimensional Riesz space fractional advection-dispersion equation. The proposed method is a fourth order centered difference operator in spatial directions and second order Crank-Nicolson method in temporal direction. By reviewing the consistency and stability of the method, the convergence of the proposed method is achieved. Several numerical examples are considered aiming to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the p…
In this note we study advection diffusion equations associated to incompressible $W^{1,p}$ velocity fields with $p>2$. We present new estimates on the energy dissipation rate and we discuss applications to the study of upper bounds on the enhancing dissipation rate, lower bounds on the $L^2$ norm of the density, and quantitative vanishing viscosity estimates. The key tools employed in our argument are a propagation of regularity result, coming from the study of transport equations, and a new result connecting the energy dissipation rate to regularity estimates for transport equations. Eventual…
This paper presents a study of finite element error estimation of advection-diffusion-reaction equation with spatially variable coefficients. We have derived a priori and a posteriori errors in both energy and L2 norm. We have used residual-based a posteriori error estimator. Numerical results are also presented to verify our theoretical approach.
This is the first part of our study of inertial manifolds for the system of 1D reaction-diffusion-advection equations which is devoted to the case of Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. Although this problem does not initially possess the spectral gap property, it is shown that this property is satisfied after the proper non-local change of the dependent variable. The case of periodic boundary conditions where the situation is principally different and the inertial manifold may not exist is considered in the second part of our study.
We prove existence and uniqueness of global solutions for a class of reaction-advection-anisotropic-diffusion systems whose reaction terms have a "triangular structure". We thus extend previous results to the case of time-space dependent anisotropic diffusions and with time-space dependent advection terms. The corresponding models are in particular relevant for transport processes inside porous media and in situations in which additional migration occurs. The proofs are based on optimal $L^p$-maximal regularity results for the general time-dependent linear operator dual to the one involved in …
It is well-known that quadratic or cubic nonlinearities in reaction-diffusion-advection systems can lead to growth of solutions with small, localized initial data and even finite time blow-up. It was recently proved, however, that, if the components of two nonlinearly coupled reaction-diffusion-advection equations propagate with different velocities, then quadratic or cubic mixed-terms, i.e.~nonlinear terms with nontrivial contributions from both components, do not affect global existence and Gaussian decay of small, localized initial data. The proof relied on pointwise estimates to capture th…
We study the free boundary regularity of the traveling wave solutions to a degenerate advection-diffusion problem of Porous Medium type, whose existence was proved in \cite{MonsaingonNovikovRoquejoffre}. We set up a finite difference scheme allowing to compute approximate solutions and capture the free boundaries, and we carry out a numerical investigation of their regularity. Based on some nondegeneracy assumptions supported by solid numerical evidence, we prove the Lipschitz regularity of the free boundaries. Our simulations indicate that this regularity is optimal, and the free boundaries s…
We consider a reaction-diffusion-advection problem in a perforated medium, with nonlinear reactions in the bulk and at the microscopic boundary, and low diffusion scaling. The microstructure changes in time; the microstructural evolution is known a priori. The aim of the paper is the rigorous derivation of a homogenized model. We use appropriately scaled function spaces, which allow us to show compactness results, especially regarding the time-derivative and we prove strong two-scale compactness results of Kolmogorov-Simon-type, which allow to pass to the limit in the nonlinear terms. The deri…
In this study a stabilized finite element method for solving advection-diffusion-reaction equation with spatially variable coefficients has been carried out. Here subgrid scale approach along with algebraic approximation to the sub-scales has been chosen as stabilized method among various other methods. Both a priori and a posteriori finite element error estimates in $L_2$ norms have been derived after introducing the stabilized formulation of the variational form. An expression of the stabilization parameter for this 2D problem has also been derived here. At last numerical experiments are pre…
The incompressible limit of nonlinear diffusion equations of porous medium type has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, due to its ability to link the weak formulation of cell-population models to free boundary problems of Hele-Shaw type. Although vast literature is available on this singular limit, little is known on the convergence rate of the solutions. In this work, we compute the convergence rate in a negative Sobolev norm and, upon interpolating with BV-uniform bounds, we deduce a convergence rate in appropriate Lebesgue spaces.
This paper aims to explore the temporal-spatial spreading and asymptotic behaviors of West Nile virus by a reaction-advection-diffusion system with free boundaries, especially considering the impact of advection term on the extinction and persistence of West Nile virus. We define the spatial-temporal risk index $R^{F}_{0}(t)$ with the advection rate and the general basic disease reproduction number $R^D_0$ to get the vanishing-spreading dichotomy regimes of West Nile virus. We show that there exists a threshold value $μ^{*}$ of the advection rate, and obtain the threshold results of it. When t…
We consider a reaction-diffusion model with a drift term in a bounded domain. Given a time $T,$ we prove the existence and uniqueness of an initial datum that maximizes the total mass $\textstyle{\int_Ωu(T,x)\mathrm{d}x}$ in the presence of an advection term. In a population dynamics context, this optimal initial datum can be understood as the best distribution of the initial population that leads to a maximal the total population at a prefixed time $T.$ We also compare the total masses at a time $T$ in two cases: depending on whether an advection term is present in the medium or not. We prove…
We study inverse boundary problems for the advection diffusion equation on an admissible manifold, i.e. a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary of dimension $\ge 3$, which is conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean real line and a simple manifold. We prove the unique identifiability of the advection term of class $H^1\cap L^\infty$ and of class $H^{2/3}\cap C^{0,1/3}$ from the knowledge of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the boundary of the manifold. This seems to be the first global identifiability result for possibly discontinuous advection terms.
An algebraic lower bound on the energy decay for solutions of the advection-diffusion equation in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $d=2,3$ is derived using the Fourier splitting method. Motivated by a conjecture on mixing of passive scalars in fluids, a lower bound on the $L^2-$ norm of the inverse gradient of the solution is obtained via gradient estimates and interpolation.
We develop simple diffusion-advection models to estimate the average time it takes fish to reach one of the boundaries of an enclosure and the population distribution over time moving in the enclosure (such as a lake or slough). We start with a combination of random walks and directed movement and then, from these, proceeding to the associated Partial Differential Equations and their solution. We also find the evolution of the population distribution and communities composition over time moving in the enclosure. Although this model was developed with fish movements in mind it has wide-ranging …
We present convergence analysis of operator learning in [Chen and Chen 1995] and [Lu et al. 2020], where continuous operators are approximated by a sum of products of branch and trunk networks. In this work, we consider the rates of learning solution operators from both linear and nonlinear advection-diffusion equations with or without reaction. We find that the convergence rates depend on the architecture of branch networks as well as the smoothness of inputs and outputs of solution operators.
