We consider a reaction-diffusion-advection problem in a perforated medium, with nonlinear reactions in the bulk and at the microscopic boundary, and low diffusion scaling. The microstructure changes in time; the microstructural evolution is known a priori. The aim of the paper is the rigorous derivation of a homogenized model. We use appropriately scaled function spaces, which allow us to show compactness results, especially regarding the time-derivative and we prove strong two-scale compactness results of Kolmogorov-Simon-type, which allow to pass to the limit in the nonlinear terms. The derived macroscopic model depends on the micro- and the macro-variable, and the evolution of the underlying microstructure is approximated by time- and space-dependent reference elements.
We follow-up on our works devoted to homogenization theory for linear second-order elliptic equations with coefficients that are perturbations of periodic coefficients. We have first considered equations in divergence form in [6, 7, 8]. We have next shown, in our recent work [9], using a slightly different strategy of proof than in our earlier works, that we may also address the equation --aij$\partial$iju = f. The present work is devoted to advection-diffusion equations: --aij$\partial$iju + bj$\partial$ju = f. We prove, under suitable assumptions on the coefficients aij, bj, 1 $\le$ i, j $\l…
We prove stochastic homogenization for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with random space-time-dependent KPP reactions with temporal correlations that are decaying in an appropriate sense. We show that the limiting homogenized dynamic has the simple form of spreading with some deterministic direction-dependent speeds from the support of the initial datum. We obtain analogous results for G-equations with random flame speeds and incompressible background advections. Important ingredients in our proofs are a non-autonomous subadditive theorem and the principle of virtual linearity for KPP r…

We consider the so-called G-equation, a level set Hamilton-Jacobi equation, used as a sharp interface model for flame propagation, perturbed by an oscillatory advection in a spatio-temporal periodic environment. Assuming that the advection has suitably small spatial divergence, we prove that, as the size of the oscillations diminishes, the solutions homogenize (average out) and converge to the solution of an effective anisotropic first-order (spatio-temporal homogeneous) level set equation. Moreover we obtain a rate of convergence and show that, under certain conditions, the averaging enhances…
We prove homogenization for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with KPP reactions, in the time-periodic spatially stationary ergodic setting, and find an explicit formula for the homogenized dynamic. We also extend this result to models with non-local diffusion and KPP reactions.
This paper is concerned with some nonlinear propagation phenomena for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with Kolmogrov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type nonlinearities in general periodic domains or in infinite cylinders with oscillating boundaries. Having a variational formula for the minimal speed of propagation involving eigenvalue problems ( proved in Berestycki, Hamel and Nadirashvili \cite{BHN1}), we consider the minimal speed of propagation as a function of diffusion factors, reaction factors and periodicity parameters. There we study the limits, the asymptotic behaviors and the variat…

In this work, we study the aspect of Bloch wave homogenization of the new notion of convergence of microstructures represented by matrices $B^ε$ related to the classical $H$-convergence of $A^ε$ introduced in \cite{TG-MV-1}. The new macro quantity $B^{#}$ appears to incorporate the interaction between the two microstructures $A^ε,B^ε$. Here we present its Bloch spectral representation along with the homogenization result.
We consider the corrector equation associated, in homogenization theory , to a linear second-order elliptic equation in divergence form --$\partial$i(aij$\partial$ju) = f , when the diffusion coefficient is a locally perturbed periodic coefficient. The question under study is the existence (and uniqueness) of the corrector, strictly sublinear at infinity, with gradient in L r if the local perturbation is itself L r , r < +$\infty$. The present work follows up on our works [7, 8, 9], providing an alternative, more general and versatile approach , based on an a priori estimate, for this well-pos…
Many biological and engineering materials have nonperiodic microstructures for which classical periodic homogenization results do not apply. Certain nonperiodic microstructures may be approximated by locally periodic microstructures for which homogenization techniques are available. Motivated by the consideration that such materials are often anisotropic and can posses residual stresses, a broad class of locally periodic microstructures is considered and the resulting effective macroscopic equations are derived. The effective residual stress and effective elasticity tensor are determined by so…
This paper is devoted to the homogenization of the heat conduction equation, with a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, having a periodically oscillating thermal conductivity and a vanishing volumetric heat capacity. A homogenization result is established by using the evolution settings of multiscale and very weak multiscale convergence. In particular, we investigate how the relation between the volumetric heat capacity and the microscopic structure effects the homogenized problem and its associated local problem. It turns out that the properties of the microscopic geometry of the proble…
We study the homogenization of a novel microscopic tridomain system, allowing for a more detailed analysis of the properties of cardiac conduction than the classical bidomain and monodomain models. In (Acta Appl.Math. 179 (2022) 1--35), we detail this model in which gap junctions are considered as the connections between adjacent cells in cardiac muscle and could serve as alternative or supporting pathways for cell-to-cell electrical signal propagation. Departing from this microscopic cellular model, we apply the periodic unfolding method to derive the macroscopic tridomain model. Several diff…
In this paper we establish compactness results of multiscale and very weak multiscale type for sequences bounded in $L^{2}(0,T;H_{0}^{1}(Ω))$, fulfilling a certain condition. We apply the results in the homogenization of the parabolic partial differential equation $\varepsilon ^{p}\partial_{t}u_{\varepsilon }\left( x,t\right) -\nabla \cdot \left( a\left( x/\varepsilon ,x/\varepsilon ^{2},t/\varepsilon^{q},t/\varepsilon ^{r}\right) \nabla u_{\varepsilon }\left( x,t\right)\right) = f\left( x,t\right) $, where $0<p<q<r$. The homogenization result reveals two special phenomena, namely that the hom…
The introduced notion of locally-periodic two-scale convergence allows to average a wider range of microstructures, compared to the periodic one. The compactness theorem for the locally-periodic two-scale convergence and the characterisation of the limit for a sequence bounded in $H^1(Ω)$ are proven. The underlying analysis comprises the approximation of functions, which periodicity with respect to the fast variable depends on the slow variable, by locally-periodic functions, periodic in subdomains smaller than the considered domain, but larger than the size of microscopic structures. The deve…
We prove an upper bound for the convergence rate of the homogenization limit $ε\to 0$ for a linear transmission problem for a advection-diffusion(-reaction) system posed in areas with low and high diffusivity, where $ε$ is a suitable scale parameter. On this way, we justify the formal homogenization asymptotics obtained by us earlier by proving an upper bound for the convergence rate (a corrector estimate). The main ingredients of the proof of the corrector estimate include integral estimates for rapidly oscillating functions with prescribed average, properties of the macroscopic reconstructio…
We consider the homogenization of monotone systems of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations with convex nonlinearities set in the stationary, ergodic setting. The primary focus of this paper is on collapsing systems which, as the microscopic scale tends to zero, average to a deterministic scalar Hamilton-Jacobi equation. However, our methods also apply to systems which do not collapse and, as the microscopic scale tends to zero, average to a deterministic system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations.
The paper addresses the homogenization of a family of micro-models for the flow of a slightly compressible fluid in a poroelastic matrix containing periodically distibuted poroelastic inclusions, with low permeabilities and with imperfect contact on the interface. The micro-models are based on Biot's system for consolidation processes in each phase, with interfacial barrier formulation. Using the two-scale convergence technique, it is shown that the derived system is a general model of that proposed by Aifantis, plus an extra memory term.
In this work we present the homogenization of a reaction-diffusion model that includes an evolving microstructure. Such type of problems model, for example, mineral dissolution and precipitation in a porous medium. Hence, we are dealing with a multi-scale problem with free boundaries on the pore scale. In the initial state the microscopic geometry is given by a periodically perforated domain, including spherical solid grains. The radius of each grain is of order $ε$ and depends on the unknown (the solute concentration) at its surface. Therefore the radii of the grains change in time, leading t…
The paper addresses the homogenization of a micro-model of poroelasticity coupled with thermal effects for two-constituent media and with imperfect interfacial contact. The homogenized model is obtained by means of the two-scale convergence technique. It is shown that the macro-thermo-poro-elasticity model with double porosity/diffusivity contains in particular some extra terms accounting for the micro-heterogeneities and imperfect contact at the local scale. Finally, a corrector result is given under more regularity assumptions on the data.
In this paper we present a derivation and multiscale analysis of a mathematical model for plant cell wall biomechanics that takes into account both the microscopic structure of a cell wall coming from the cellulose microfibrils and the chemical reactions between the cell wall's constituents. Particular attention is paid to the role of pectin and the impact of calcium-pectin cross-linking chemistry on the mechanical properties of the cell wall. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the strongly coupled microscopic problem consisting of the equations of linear elasticity and a system of react…
The asymptotic behavior of a one-dimensional spectral problem with periodic coefficient is addressed for high frequency modes by a method of Bloch wave homogenization. The analysis leads to a spectral problem including both microscopic and macroscopic eigenmodes. Numerical simulation results are provided to corroborate the theory.
The present paper is concerned with a space-time homogenization problem for nonlinear diffusion equations with periodically oscillating (in space and time) coefficients. Main results consist of a homogenization theorem (i.e., convergence of solutions as the period of oscillation goes to zero) as well as a characterization of homogenized equations. In particular, homogenized matrices are described in terms of solutions to cell-problems, which have different forms depending on the log-ratio of the spatial and temporal periods of the coefficients. At a critical ratio, the cell problem turns out t…
Since the seminal contribution of Geymonat, Müller, and Triantafyllidis, it is known that strong ellipticity is not necessarily conserved through periodic homogenization in linear elasticity. This phenomenon is related to microscopic buckling of composite materials. Consider a mixture of two isotropic phases which leads to loss of strong ellipticity when arranged in a laminate manner, as considered by Gutiérrez and by Briane and Francfort. In this contribution we prove that the laminate structure is essentially the only microstructure which leads to such a loss of strong ellipticity. We perfor…
Multiscale analysis of a degenerate pseudoparabolic variational inequality, modelling the two-phase flow with dynamical capillary pressure in a perforated domain, is the main topic of this work. Regularisation and penalty operator methods are applied to show the existence of a solution of the nonlinear degenerate pseudoparabolic variational inequality defined in a domain with microscopic perforations, as well as to derive a priori estimates for solutions of the microscopic problem. The main challenge is the derivation of a priori estimates for solutions of the variational inequality, uniformly…
In this paper we prove a concentration result and an error estimate for a model of heat conduction in composite materials having a microscopic structure arranged in a perodic array and thermally active membranes separating the heat conductive phases.
We consider periodic homogenization problems for the L{é}vy operators with asymmetric L{é}vy densities. The formal asymptotic expansion used for the $\a$-stable (symmetric) L{é}vy operators ($\a\in (0,2)$) is not applicable directly to such asymmetric cases. We rescale the asymmetric densities, extract the most singular part of the measures, which average out the microscopic dependences in the homogenization procedures. We give two conditions (A) and (B), which characterize such a class of asymmetric densities, that the above "rescaled" homogenization is available.
In this study, we prove results on the weak solvability and homogenization of a microscopic semi-linear elliptic system posed in perforated media. The model presented here explores the interplay between stationary diffusion and both surface and volume chemical reactions in porous media. Our interest lies in deriving homogenization limits (upscaling) for alike systems and particularly in justifying rigorously the obtained averaged descriptions. Essentially, we prove the well-posedness of the microscopic problem ensuring also the positivity and boundedness of the involved concentrations and then…
We investigate the PDE system resulting from even electromechanical coupling in elastomers. Assuming a periodic microstructure and a periodic distribution of micro-charges of a prescribed order, we derive the homogenized system. The results depend crucially on periodicity (or adequate randomness) and on the type of microstructure under consideration. We also show electric enhancement if the charges are carefully tailored to the homogenized electric field and explicit that enhancement, as well as the corresponding electrostrictive enhancement in a dilute regime.
In this paper we prove a general homogenization result for monotone parabolic problems with an arbitrary number of microscopic scales in space as well as in time, where the scale functions are not necessarily powers of epsilon. The main tools for the homogenization procedure are multiscale convergence and very weak multiscale convergence, both adapted to evo lution problems. At the end of the paper an example is given to concretize the use of the main result.
We provide a rather simple proof of a homogenization result for the bidomain model of cardiac electrophysiology. Departing from a microscopic cellular model, we apply the theory of two-scale convergence to derive the bidomain model. To allow for some relevant nonlinear membrane models, we make essential use of the boundary unfolding operator. There are several complications preventing the application of standard homogenization results, including the degenerate temporal structure of the bidomain equations and a nonlinear dynamic boundary condition on an oscillating surface.
In this paper we employ homogenization techniques to provide a rigorous derivation of the Darcy scale model for precipitation and dissolution in porous media proposed in [19]. The starting point is the pore scale model in [12], which is a coupled system of evolution equations, involving a parabolic equation and an ordinary differential equation. The former models ion transport and is defined in a periodically perforated medium. It is further coupled through the boundary conditions to the latter, defined on the boundaries of the perforations and modelling the dissolution and precipitation of th…
We study quantitative periodic homogenization of integral functionals in the context of non-linear elasticity. Under suitable assumptions on the energy densities (in particular frame indifference; minimality, non-degeneracy and smoothness at the identity; $p\geq d$-growth from below; and regularity of the microstructure), we show that in a neighborhood of the set of rotations, the multi-cell homogenization formula of non-convex homogenization reduces to a single-cell formula. The latter can be expressed with help of correctors. We prove that the homogenized integrand admits a quadratic Taylor …
A variational model for the interaction between homogenization and phase separation is considered. The focus is on the regime where the latter happens at a smaller scale than the former, and when the wells of the double well potential are allowed to move and to have discontinuities. The zeroth and first order $Γ$-limits are identified. The topology considered for the latter is that of two-scale, since it encodes more information on the asymptotic local microstructure. In particular, when the wells are non constant, the first order $Γ$-limit describes the contribution of microscopic phase separ…
Two-scale homogenization limits of parabolic cross-diffusion systems in a heterogeneous medium with no-flux boundary conditions are proved. The heterogeneity of the medium is reflected in the diffusion coefficients or by the perforated domain. The diffusion matrix is of degenerate type and may be neither symmetric nor positive semi-definite, but the diffusion system is assumed to satisfy an entropy structure. Uniform estimates are derived from the entropy production inequality. New estimates on the equicontinuity with respect to the time variable ensure the strong convergence of a sequence of …
In this work we deal with the stochastic homogenization of the initial boundary value problems of monotone type. The models of monotone type under consideration describe the deformation behaviour of inelastic materials with a microstructure which can be characterised by random measures. Based on the Fitzpatrick function concept we reduce the study of the asymptotic behaviour of monotone operators associated with our models to the problem of the stochastic homogenization of convex functionals within an ergodic and stationary setting. The concept of Fitzpatrick's function helps us to introduce a…
We study stochastic homogenization of a quasilinear parabolic PDE with nonlinear microscopic Robin conditions on a perforated domain. The focus of our work lies on the underlying geometry that does not allow standard homogenization techniques to be applied directly. Instead we prove homogenization on a regularized geometry and demonstrate afterwards that the form of the homogenized equation is independent from the regularization. Then we pass to the regularization limit to obtain the anticipated limit equation. Furthermore, we show that Boolean models of Poisson point processes are covered by …
In this paper, we consider a microscopic semilinear elliptic equation posed in periodically perforated domains and associated with the Fourier-type condition on internal micro-surfaces. The first contribution of this work is the construction of a reliable linearization scheme that allows us, by a suitable choice of scaling arguments and stabilization constants, to prove the weak solvability of the microscopic model. Asymptotic behaviors of the microscopic solution with respect to the microscale parameter are thoroughly investigated in the second theme, based upon several cases of scaling. In p…
We propose an abstract framework for the homogenization of random functionals which may contain non-convex terms, based on a two-scale $Γ$-convergence approach and a definition of Young measures on micropatterns which encodes the profiles of the oscillating functions and of functionals. Our abstract result is a lower bound for such energies in terms of a cell problem (on large expanding cells) and the $Γ$-limits of the functionals at the microscale. We show that our method allows to retrieve the results of Dal Maso and Modica in the well-known case of the stochastic homogenization of convex La…
Water flow in plant tissues takes place in two different physical domains separated by semipermeable membranes: cell insides and cell walls. The assembly of all cell insides and cell walls are termed symplast and apoplast, respectively. Water transport is pressure driven in both, where osmosis plays an essential role in membrane crossing. In this paper, a microscopic model of water flow and transport of an osmotically active solute in a plant tissue is considered. The model is posed on the scale of a single cell and the tissue is assumed to be composed of periodically distributed cells. The fl…
Corrector estimates constitute a key ingredient in the derivation of optimal convergence rates via two-scale expansion techniques in homogenization theory of random uniformly elliptic equations. The present work follows up - in terms of corrector estimates - on the recent work of Fischer and Neukamm (arXiv:1908.02273) which provides a quantitative stochastic homogenization theory of nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations under a spectral gap assumption. We establish optimal-order estimates (with respect to the scaling in the ratio between the microscopic and the macroscopic scale) for higher-o…
We derive optimal-order homogenization rates for random nonlinear elliptic PDEs with monotone nonlinearity in the uniformly elliptic case. More precisely, for a random monotone operator on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with stationary law (i.e. spatially homogeneous statistics) and fast decay of correlations on scales larger than the microscale $\varepsilon>0$, we establish homogenization error estimates of the order $\varepsilon$ in case $d\geq 3$, respectively of the order $\varepsilon |\log \varepsilon|^{1/2}$ in case $d=2$. Previous results in nonlinear stochastic homogenization have been limited to a sm…
