In this note we study advection diffusion equations associated to incompressible $W^{1,p}$ velocity fields with $p>2$. We present new estimates on the energy dissipation rate and we discuss applications to the study of upper bounds on the enhancing dissipation rate, lower bounds on the $L^2$ norm of the density, and quantitative vanishing viscosity estimates. The key tools employed in our argument are a propagation of regularity result, coming from the study of transport equations, and a new result connecting the energy dissipation rate to regularity estimates for transport equations. Eventually we provide examples which underline the sharpness of our estimates.
We study the asymptotic limit of diffused surface energy in the van der Waals--Cahn--Hillard theory when an advection term is added and the energy is uniformly bounded. We prove that the limit interface is an integral varifold and the generalized mean curvature vector is determined by the advection term. As the application, a prescribed mean curvature problem is solved using the min-max method.
Sobolev regularity theory for stochastic reaction-diffusion-advection equations with spatially homogeneous colored noises and infinitesimal generators of subordinate Brownian motions
This paper contains two main contributions. First, it provides optimal stability estimates for advection-diffusion equations in a setting in which the velocity field is Sobolev regular in the spatial variable. This estimate is formulated with the help of Kantorovich--Rubinstein distances with logarithmic cost functions. Second, the stability estimates are extended to the advection-diffusion equations with velocity fields whose gradients are singular integrals of $L^1$ functions entailing a new well-posedness result.
The incompressible limit of nonlinear diffusion equations of porous medium type has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, due to its ability to link the weak formulation of cell-population models to free boundary problems of Hele-Shaw type. Although vast literature is available on this singular limit, little is known on the convergence rate of the solutions. In this work, we compute the convergence rate in a negative Sobolev norm and, upon interpolating with BV-uniform bounds, we deduce a convergence rate in appropriate Lebesgue spaces.

In this paper subgrid multiscale stabilized finite element method for Advection-Diffusion-Reaction (ADR) equation coupled with Stokes-Darcy flow problem has been studied. Here the advection velocity involved in ADR equation obeys Stokes-Darcy flow equation. In this study the approach of algebraic approximation of stabilization parameter has been considered. Further apriori error estimation has been elaborately carried out.
We investigate the properties of discretizations of advection equations on non-cartesian grids and graphs in general. Advection equations discretized on non-cartesian grids have remained a long-standing challenge as the structure of the grid can lead to strong oscillations in the solution, even for otherwise constant velocity fields. We introduce a new method to track oscillations of the solution for rough velocity fields on any graph. The method in particular highlights some inherent structural conditions on the mesh for propagating regularity on solutions.
We discuss $L^p$ integrability estimates for the solution $u$ of the advection-diffusion equation $\partial_t u + \mathrm{div} (bu) = Δu$, where the velocity field $b \in L^r_t L^q_x$. We first summarize some classical results proving such estimates for certain ranges of the exponents $r$ and $q$. Afterwards we prove the optimality of such ranges by means of new original examples.
In this work I show how a diffusion-advection equation in three space-dimensions may have its advection term weakly limited to a velocity field localized to a moving curve. This is rigorously accomplished through the technique of concentrated capacity, and the form of the concentrated capacity limit along with small time existence of solutions is determined. This problem is motivated by mathematical biology and the study of proteins in solvent where the latter is modeled as a diffusing quantity and the protein is taken to be a 1d object which advects the solvent by contact and its own motion. …
We study the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation (KSE) in scalar form on the two-dimensional torus with and without advection by an incompressible vector field. We prove local existence of mild solutions for arbitrary data in L2. We then study the issue of global existence. We prove global existence for the KSE in the presence of advection for arbitrary data, provided the advecting velocity field v satisfies certain conditions that ensure the dissipation time of the associated hyperdiffusion-advection equation is sufficiently small. In the absence of advection, global existence can be shown only if …
This article provides techniques of raising the regularity of fractional order equations and resolves fundamental questions on the one-dimensional homogeneous boundary-value problem of skewed (double-sided) fractional diffusion advection reaction equation (FDARE) with variable coefficients on the bounded interval. The existence of the true (classical) solution together with norm estimation is established and the precise regularity bound is found; also, the structure of the solution is unraveled, capturing the essence of regularity, singularity, and other features of the solution. The key analy…
We use De Giorgi techniques to prove Hölder continuity of weak solutions to a class of drift-diffusion equations, with $L^2$ initial data and divergence free drift velocity that lies in $L_{t}^{\infty}BMO_{x}^{-1}$. We apply this result to prove global regularity for a family of active scalar equations which includes the advection-diffusion equation that has been proposed by Moffatt in the context of magnetostrophic turbulence in the Earth's fluid core.
In this paper, we are concerned with the magnetic effect on the Sobolev solvability of boundary layer equations for the 2D incompressible MHD system without resistivity. The MHD boundary layer is described by the Prandtl type equations derived from the incompressible viscous MHD system without resistivity under the no-slip boundary condition on the velocity. Assuming that the initial tangential magnetic field does not degenerate, a local-in-time well-posedness in Sobolev spaces is proved without the monotonicity condition on the velocity field. Moreover, we show that if the tangential magnetic…
This article is a comparative study on an initial-boundary value problem for a class of semilinear pseudo-parabolic equations with the fractional Caputo derivative, also called the fractional Sobolev-Galpern type equations. The purpose of this work is to reveal the influence of the degree of the source nonlinearity on the well-posedness of the solution. By considering four different types of nonlinearities, we derive the global well-posedness of mild solutions to the problem corresponding to the four cases of the nonlinear source terms. For the advection source function case, we apply a nontri…
We develop a new approach to study the well-posedness theory of the Prandtl equation in Sobolev spaces by using a direct energy method under a monotonicity condition on the tangential velocity field instead of using the Crocco transformation. Precisely, we firstly investigate the linearized Prandtl equation in some weighted Sobolev spaces when the tangential velocity of the background state is monotonic in the normal variable. Then to cope with the loss of regularity of the perturbation with respect to the background state due to the degeneracy of the equation, we apply the Nash-Moser-Hormande…
We consider the mixing behaviour of the solutions of the continuity equation associated with a divergence-free velocity field. In this announcement we sketch two explicit examples of exponential decay of the mixing scale of the solution, in case of Sobolev velocity fields, thus showing the optimality of known lower bounds. We also describe how to use such examples to construct solutions to the continuity equation with Sobolev but non-Lipschitz velocity field exhibiting instantaneous loss of any fractional Sobolev regularity.
We consider transport of a passive scalar advected by an irregular divergence free vector field. Given any non-constant initial data $\bar ρ\in H^1_\text{loc}({\mathbb R}^d)$, $d\geq 2$, we construct a divergence free advecting velocity field $v$ (depending on $\bar ρ$) for which the unique weak solution to the transport equation does not belong to $H^1_\text{loc}({\mathbb R}^d)$ for any positive positive time. The velocity field $v$ is smooth, except at one point, controlled uniformly in time, and belongs to almost every Sobolev space $W^{s,p}$ that does not embed into the Lipschitz class. Th…
The present paper aims to establish the local well-posedness of Euler's fluid equations on geometric rough paths. In particular, we consider the Euler equations for the incompressible flow of an ideal fluid whose Lagrangian transport velocity possesses an additional rough-in-time, divergence-free vector field. In recent work, we have demonstrated that this system can be derived from Clebsch and Hamilton-Pontryagin variational principles that possess a perturbative geometric rough path Lie-advection constraint. In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness of the system in $L^2$-Sobolev spac…
We consider a simple scalar reaction-advection-diffusion equation with ignition-type nonlinearity and discuss the following question: What kinds of velocity profiles are capable of quenching any given flame, provided the velocity's amplitude is adequately large? Even for shear flows, the answer turns out to be surprisingly subtle. If the velocity profile changes in space so that it is nowhere identically constant, (or if it is identically constant only in a region of small measure) then the flow can quench any initial data. But if the velocity profile is identically constant in a sizable regio…
We prove energy estimates for a relativistic free liquid body with sufficiently small fluid velocity in a general Einstein spacetime. These estimates control Sobolev norms of the fluid velocity and enthalpy in the interior as well as Sobolev norms of the second fundamental form on the boundary.
In this paper, we prove the decay estimates of the velocity and $H^1$ scattering for the 2D linearized Euler equations around a class of monotone shear flow in a finite channel. Our result is consistent with the decay rate predicted by Case in 1960.
A linear stochastic vector advection equation is considered. The equation may model a passive magnetic field in a random fluid. The driving velocity field is a integrable to a certain power and the noise is infinite dimensional. We prove that, thanks to the noise, the equation is well posed in a suitable sense, opposite to what may happen without noise.
A linear stochastic vector advection equation is considered; the equation may model a passive magnetic field in a random fluid. When the driving velocity field is rough but deterministic, in particular just Hölder continuous and bounded, one can construct examples of infinite stretching of the passive field, arising from smooth initial conditions. The purpose of the paper is to prove that infinite stretching is prevented if the driving velocity field contains in addition a white noise component.
In this paper, we consider the problem of optimally guiding a large-scale swarm of underwater vehicles that is tasked with the indirect control of an advection-diffusion environmental field. The microscopic vehicle dynamics are governed by a stochastic differential equation with drift. The drift terms model the self-propelled velocity of the vehicle and the velocity field of the currents. In the mean-field setting, the macroscopic vehicle dynamics are governed by a Kolmogorov forward equation in the form of a linear parabolic advection-diffusion equation. The environmental field is governed by…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the continuity equation in space dimension ${d \geq 2}$. We construct a divergence-free velocity field uniformly bounded in all Sobolev spaces $W^{1,p}$, for $1 \leq p<\infty$, and a smooth compactly supported initial datum such that the unique solution to the continuity equation with this initial datum and advecting field does not belong to any Sobolev space of positive fractional order at any positive time. We also construct velocity fields in $W^{r,p}$, with $r>1$, and solutions of the continuity equation with these velocities that exhibit some loss of reg…
This paper is concerned with the vanishing viscosity and magnetic resistivity limit for the two-dimensional steady incompressible MHD system on the half plane with no-slip boundary condition on velocity field and perfectly conducting wall condition on magnetic field. We prove the nonlinear stability of shear flows of Prandtl type with nondegenerate tangential magnetic field, but without any positivity or monotonicity assumption on the velocity field. It is in sharp contrast to the steady Navier-Stokes equations and reflects the stabilization effect of magnetic field. Unlike the unsteady MHD sy…
We study the well-posedness theory for the MHD boundary layer. The boundary layer equations are governed by the Prandtl type equations that are derived from the incompressible MHD system with non-slip boundary condition on the velocity and perfectly conducting condition on the magnetic field. Under the assumption that the initial tangential magnetic field is not zero, we establish the local-in-time existence, uniqueness of solution for the nonlinear MHD boundary layer equations. Compared with the well-posedness theory of the classical Prandtl equations for which the monotonicity condition of t…
In this paper, we construct a class global large solution to the two-dimensional MHD equations with damp terms in the nonhomogeneous Sobolev framework.
We consider a quasilinear parabolic Cauchy problem with spatial anisotropy of orthotropic type and study the spatial localization of solutions. Assuming the initial datum is localized with respect to a coordinate having slow diffusion rate, we bound the corresponding directional velocity of the support along the flow. The expansion rate is shown to be optimal for large times.
Sprays are complex flows constituted of dispersed particles in an underlying gas. In this paper, we are interested in the equations for moderately thick sprays consisting of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and Boltzmann BGK equation. Here the coupling of two equations is through a friction (or drag) force which depends on the density of compressible fluid and the relative velocity between particles and fluid. For the Navier-Stokes-BGK system, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces with exponential weight.
For the $2D$ Euler equation in vorticity formulation, we construct localized smooth solutions whose critical Sobolev norms become large in a short period of time, and solutions which initially belong to $L^\infty \cap H^1$ but escapes $H^1$ immediately for $t>0$. Our main observation is that a localized chunk of vorticity bounded in $L^\infty \cap H^1$ with odd-odd symmetry is able to generate a hyperbolic flow with large velocity gradient at least for a short period of time, which stretches the vorticity gradient.
This paper studies the dissipative generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations in a supercritical regime where the order of the dissipation is small relative to order of the velocity, and the velocities are less regular than the advected scalar by up to one order of derivative. We also consider a non-degenerate modification of the endpoint case in which the velocity is less smooth than the advected scalar by slightly more than one order. The existence and uniqueness theory of these equations in the borderline Sobolev spaces is addressed, as well as the instantaneous smoothing effect of the…
We study the mixing and dissipation properties of the advection-diffusion equation with diffusivity $0 < κ\ll 1$ and advection by a class of random velocity fields on $\mathbb T^d$, $d=\{2,3\}$, including solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations forced by sufficiently regular-in-space, non-degenerate white-in-time noise. We prove that the solution almost surely mixes exponentially fast uniformly in the diffusivity $κ$. Namely, that there is a deterministic, exponential rate (independent of $κ$) such that all mean-zero $H^1$ initial data decays exponentially fast in $H^{-1}$ at this rate wit…
We establish smoothing estimates in the framework of hyperbolic Sobolev spaces for the velocity averaging operator $ρ$ of the solution of the kinetic transport equation. If the velocity domain is either the unit sphere or the unit ball, then, for any exponents $q$ and $r$, we find a characterisation of the exponents $β_+$ and $β_-$, except possibly for an endpoint case, for which $D_+^{β_+}D_-^{β_-} ρ$ is bounded from space-velocity $L^2_{x,v}$ to space-time $L^q_tL^r_x$. Here, $D_+$ and $D_-$ are the classical and hyperbolic derivative operators, respectively. In fact, we shall provide an arg…
In this paper, we propose a PDE-based optimization motivated by the problem of microfluidic heat transfer to finding the optimal incompressible velocity fields in 2D domain. To solve this optimization model, we use spectral method to discretize the model to obtain an ODE based optimization. This way significantly reduces the complexity of the discretization optimization model, and gives a more accurate approximation of the original PDE based optimization. Some theoretical results are obtained.
The Cahn--Hilliard equation is a classic model of phase separation in binary mixtures that exhibits spontaneous coarsening of the phases. We study the Cahn--Hilliard equation with an imposed advection term in order to model the stirring and eventual mixing of the phases. The main result is that if the imposed advection is sufficiently mixing then no phase separation occurs, and the solution instead converges exponentially to a homogeneous mixed state. The mixing effectiveness of the imposed drift is quantified in terms of the dissipation time of the associated advection-hyperdiffusion equation…
We provide a preliminary comparison of the dispersion properties, specifically the time-amplification factor, the scaled group velocity and the error in the phase speed of four spatiotemporal discretization schemes utilized for solving the one-dimensional (1D) linear advection diffusion reaction (ADR) equation: (a) An explicit (RK2) temporal integration combined with the Optimal Upwind Compact Scheme (or OUCS3) and the central difference scheme (CD2) for second order spatial discretization, (b) a fully implicit mid-point rule for time integration coupled with the OUCS3 and the Lele's compact s…
