The present paper, though inspired by the use of tensor hierarchies in theoretical physics, establishes their mathematical credentials, especially as genetically related to Lie algebra crossed modules. Gauging procedures in supergravity rely on a pairing - the embedding tensor - between a Leibniz algebra and a Lie algebra. Two such algebras, together with their embedding tensor, form a triple called a Lie-Leibniz triple, of which Lie algebra crossed modules are particular cases. This paper is devoted to showing that any Lie-Leibniz triple induces a differential graded Lie algebra - its associated tensor hierarchy - whose restriction to the category of Lie algebra crossed modules is the canonical assignment associating to any Lie algebra crossed module its corresponding unique 2-term differential graded Lie algebra. This shows that Lie-Leibniz triples form natural generalizations of Lie algebra crossed modules and that their associated tensor hierarchies can be considered as some kind of 'lie-ization' of the former. We deem the present construction of such tensor hierarchies clearer and more straightforward than previous derivations. We stress that such a construction suggests the existence of further well-defined Leibniz gauge theories.
We study Lie bialgebroid crossed modules which are pairs of Lie algebroid crossed modules in duality that canonically give rise to Lie bialgebroids. A one-one correspondence between such Lie bialgebroid crossed modules and co-quadratic Manin triples $(K,P,Q)$ is established, where $K$ is a co-quadratic Lie algebroid and $(P,Q)$ is a pair of transverse Dirac structures in $K$.
The notion of crossed modules for Lie 2-algebras is introduced. We show that, associated to such a crossed module, there is a strict Lie 3-algebra structure on its mapping cone complex and a strict Lie 2-algebra structure on its derivations. Finally, we classify strong crossed modules by means of the third cohomology group of Lie 2-algebras.
We generalize the BF theory action to the case of a general Lie crossed module $(H \to G)$, where $G$ and $H$ are non-abelian Lie groups. Our construction requires the existence of $G$-invariant non-degenerate bilinear forms on the Lie algebras of $G$ and $H$ and we show that there are many examples of such Lie crossed modules by using the construction of crossed modules provided by short chain complexes of vector spaces. We also generalize this construction to an arbitrary chain complex of vector spaces, of finite type. We construct two gauge-invariant actions for 2-flat and fake-flat 2-conne…
In this paper, we study the higher Yang-Mills theory in the framework of higher gauge theory. It was shown that the 2-form electromagnetism can be generalized to the 2-form Yang-Mills theory with the group $U(1)$ replaced by a crossed module of Lie groups. To extend this theory to even higher structure, we develop a 3-form Yang-Mills theory with a 2-crossed module of Lie groups. First, we give an explicit construction of non-degenerate symmetric $G$-invariant forms on the 2-crossed module of Lie algebras. Then, we derive the 3-Bianchi-Identities for 3-curvatures. Finally, we create a 3-form Ya…
Given a strict Lie 2-algebra, we can integrate it to a strict Lie 2-group by integrating the corresponding Lie algebra crossed module. On the other hand, the integration procedure of Getzler and Henriques will also produce a 2-group. In this paper, we show that these two integration results are Morita equivalent. As an application, we integrate a non-strict morphism between Lie algebra crossed modules to a generalized morphism between their corresponding Lie group crossed modules.
The Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies are integrable hierarchies associated with every affine Lie algebra. We present a new construction of such hierarchies, which only requires the computations of a formal Laurent series.
We prove that any classical affine W-algebra W(g,f), where g is a classical Lie algebra and f is an arbitrary nilpotent element of g, carries an integrable Hamiltonian hierarchy of Lax type equations. This is based on the theories of generalized Adler type operators and of generalized quasideterminants, which we develop in the paper. Moreover, we show that under certain conditions, the product of two generalized Adler type operators is a Lax type operator. We use this fact to construct a large number of integrable Hamiltonian systems, recovering, as a special case, all KdV type hierarchies con…
Tensor hierarchies are algebraic objects that emerge in gauging procedures in supergravity models, and that present a very deep and intricate relationship with Leibniz (or Loday) algebras. In this paper, we show that one can canonically associate a tensor hierarchy to any Loday algebra. By formalizing the construction that is performed in supergravity, we build this tensor hierarchy explicitly. We show that this tensor hierarchy can be canonically equipped with a differential graded Lie algebra structure that coincides with the one that is found in supergravity theories.
This work represents a PhD thesis concerning three main topics. The first one deals with the study and applications of Lie systems with compatible geometric structures, e.g. symplectic, Poisson, Dirac, Jacobi, among others. Many new Lie systems admitting Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebras of Hamiltonian vector fields relative to the above mentioned geometric structures are analyzed and their importance is illustrated by their appearances in physical, biological and mathematical models. The second part details the study of Lie symmetries and reductions of relevant hierarchies of differential equati…
We find crossed modules, i.e. certain 4 term exact sequences, associated to the Godbillon-Vey class for W_1, Vect(S^1), Vect_{1,0}(Σ) and Hol(Σ_r), i.e. for the Lie algebras of formal vector fields in 1 variable, vector fields on the circle, differentiable vector fields of holomorphic type on a Riemann surface and holomorphic vector fields on an open Riemann surface.
In this paper, we introduce the notions of hom-Lie 2-algebras, which is the categorification of hom-Lie algebras, $HL_\infty$-algebras, which is the hom-analogue of $L_\infty$-algebras, and crossed modules of hom-Lie algebras. We prove that the category of hom-Lie 2-algebras and the category of 2-term $HL_\infty$-algebras are equivalent. We give a detailed study on skeletal hom-Lie 2-algebras. In particular, we construct the hom-analogues of the string Lie 2-algebras associated to any semisimple involutive hom-Lie algebras. We also proved that there is a one-to-one correspondence between stric…
We demonstrate that SDYM equations for the Lie algebra of one-dimensional vector fields represent a natural reduction in the framework of general linearly degenerate dispersionless hierarchy. We define the reduction in terms of wave functions, introduce generating relation, Lax-Sato equations and the dressing scheme for the reduced hierarchy. Multidimensional case is also discussed.
We analyze existence of crossed product constructions of Lie group actions on C^*-algebras which are singular. These are actions where the group need not be locally compact, or the action need not be strongly continuous. In particular, we consider the case where spectrum conditions are required for the implementing unitary group in covariant representations of such actions. The existence of a crossed product construction is guaranteed by the existence of "cross representations". For one-parameter automorphism groups, we prove that the existence of cross representations is stable with respect t…
We construct an abelian representative for the crossed module associated to the string Lie algebra. We show how to apply this construction in order to define quasi-invariant tensors which serve to categorify the infinitesimal braiding on the category of g-modules given by an r-matrix, following Cirio-Martins.
Within the framework of inverse Lie problem, we give some non-trivial examples of coupled Lie remarkable equations, \textit{i.e.}, classes of differential equations that are in correspondence with their Lie point symmetries. In particular, we determine hierarchies of second order partial differential equations uniquely characterized by affine transformations of $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$, and a system of two third order partial differential equations in two independent variables uniquely determined by the Lie algebra of projective transformations of $\mathbb{R}^4$.
We study a Lie algebra $\mathcal A_{a_1,\ldots,a_{n-1}}$ of deformed skew-symmetric $n \times n$ matrices endowed with a Lie bracket given by a choice of deformed symmetric matrix. The deformations are parametrized by a sequence of real numbers $a_1,\ldots,a_{n-1}$. Using isomorphism $\mathcal A_{a_1,\ldots,a_{n-1}}^* \cong L_+$ we introduce a Lie-Poisson structure on the space of upper-triangular matrices $L_+$. In this way we generate hierarchies of Hamilton systems with bihamiltonian structure.
A Temperley-Lieb (TL) loop model is a Yang-Baxter integrable lattice model with nonlocal degrees of freedom. On a strip of width N, the evolution operator is the double-row transfer tangle D(u), an element of the TL algebra TL_N(beta) with loop fugacity beta=2cos(lambda). Similarly on a cylinder, the single-row transfer tangle T(u) is an element of the enlarged periodic TL algebra. The logarithmic minimal models LM(p,p') comprise a subfamily of the TL loop models for which the crossing parameter lambda=(p'-p)pi/p' is parameterised by coprime integers 0<p<p'. For these special values, additiona…
We review the integration of the KP hierarchy in several non-standard contexts. Specifically, we consider KP in the following associative differential algebras: an algebra equipped with a nilpotent derivation; an algebra of functions equipped with a derivation that generalizes the gradient operator; an algebra of quaternion-valued functions; a differential Lie algebra; an algebra of polynomials equipped with the Pincherle differential; a Moyal algebra. In all these cases we can formulate and solve the Cauchy problem of the KP hierarchy. Also, in each of these cases we derive different Zakharov…
In this paper, we define a class of 3-algebras which are called 3-Lie-Rinehart algebras. A 3-Lie-Rinehart algebra is a triple $(L, A, ρ)$, where $A$ is a commutative associative algebra, $L$ is an $A$-module, $(A, ρ)$ is a 3-Lie algebra $L$-module and $ρ(L, L)\subseteq Der(A)$. We discuss the basic structures, actions and crossed modules of 3-Lie-Rinehart algebras and construct 3-Lie-Rinehart algebras from given algebras, we also study the derivations from 3-Lie-Rinehart algebras to 3-Lie $A$-algebras. From the study, we see that there is much difference between 3-Lie algebras and 3-Lie-Rineha…
We consider the theory of Lax equations in complex simple and reductive classical Lie algebras with the spectral parameter on a Riemann surface of finite genus. Our approach is based on the new objects -- the Lax operator algebras, and develops the approach of I.Krichever treating the $\gl(n)$ case. For every Lax operator considered as the mapping sending a point of the cotangent bundle on the space of extended Tyrin data to an element of the corresponding Lax operator algebra we construct the hierarchy of mutually commuting flows given by Lax equations and prove that those are Hamiltonian wit…
Motivated by the theory of Painlevé equations and associated hierarchies, we study non-autonomous Hamiltonian systems that are Frobenius integrable. We establish sufficient conditions under which a given finite-dimensional Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields can be deformed to a time-dependent Lie algebra of Frobenius integrable vector fields spanning the same distribution as the original algebra. The results are applied to quasi-Stäckel systems.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a pre-Lie 2-algebra, which is a categorification of a pre-Lie algebra. We prove that the category of pre-Lie 2-algebras and the category of 2-term pre-Lie$_\infty$-algebras are equivalent. We classify skeletal pre-Lie 2-algebras by the third cohomology of a pre-Lie algebra. We prove that crossed modules of pre-Lie algebras are in one-to-one correspondence with strict pre-Lie 2-algebras. $\mathcal O$-operators on Lie 2-algebras are introduced, which can be used to construct pre-Lie 2-algebras. As an application, we give solutions of 2-graded classical Y…
In this paper, first using the higher derived brackets, we give the controlling algebra of relative difference Lie algebras, which are also called crossed homomorphisms or differential Lie algebras of weight 1 when the action is the adjoint action. Then using Getzler's twisted $L_\infty$-algebra, we define the cohomology of relative difference Lie algebras. In particular, we define the regular cohomology of difference Lie algebras by which infinitesimal deformations of difference Lie algebras are classified. We also define the cohomology of difference Lie algebras with coefficients in arbitrar…
We derive explicit formulas for lambda-brackets of the affine classical W-algebras attached to the minimal and short nilpotent elements of any simple Lie algebra g. This is used to compute explicitly the first non-trivial PDE of the corresponding intgerable generalized Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchies. It turns out that a reduction of the equation corresponding to a short nilpotent is Svinolupov's equation attached to a simple Jordan algebra, while a reduction of the equation corresponding to a minimal nilpotent is an integrable Hamiltonian equation on 2h-3 functions, where h is the dual Coxeter n…
