In this article, we provide an overview of the basic concepts of novel topological materials. This new class of materials developed by combining the Weyl/Dirac fermionic electron states and magnetism, provide a materials-science platform to test predictions of the laws of topological physics. Owing to their dissipationless transport, these materials hold high promises for technological applications in quantum computing and spintronics devices.

Carbon has numerous one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) allotropic structures. The study of carbon materials has been a major focus of material science and condensed matter physics. Previous studies have identified different classes of topological semimetallic carbon allotropes with different topological phases. In this review, we first give a brief summary of the development of carbon allotropes from 1D to 3D. Next, we discuss topological properties of carbon materials and their physical origin. Then, we consider possible expansion of the topological study o…
Topological materials discovery has evolved at a rapid pace over the past 15 years following the identification of the first nonmagnetic topological insulators (TIs), topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), and 3D topological semimetals (TSMs). Most recently, through complete analyses of symmetry-allowed band structures - including the theory of Topological Quantum Chemistry (TQC) - researchers have determined crystal-symmetry-enhanced Wilson-loop and complete symmetry-based indicators for nonmagnetic topological phases, leading to the discovery of higher-order TCIs and TSMs. The recent app…
Two-dimensional (2D) topological materials (TMs) have attracted tremendous attention due to the promise of revolutionary devices with non-dissipative electric or spin currents. Unfortunately, the scarcity of 2D TMs holds back the experimental realization of such devices. In this work, based on our recently developed, highly efficient TM discovery algorithm using symmetry indicators, we explore the possible 2D TMs in all non-magnetic compounds in four recently proposed materials databases for possible 2D materials. We identify hundreds of 2D TM candidates, including 205 topological (crystalline…
We propose that CaP3 family of materials, which include CaP3, CaAs3, SrP3, SrAs3 and BaAs3 can host a three-dimensional topological nodal line semimetal states. Based on first-principle calculations and kp model analysis, we show that a closed topological nodal line exists near the Fermi energy, which is protected by the coexistence of time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetry when the band inversion happens. A drumhead-like surface states are also obtained on the c-direction surface of these materials.
Topological electronic materials are new quantum states of matter hosting novel linear responses in the bulk and anomalous gapless states at the boundary, and are for scientific and applied reasons under intensive research in physics and in materials sciences. The detection for such materials has so far been hindered by the level of complication involved in the calculation of the so-called topological invariants, and is hence considered a specialized task that requires both experience with materials and expertise with advanced theoretical tools. Here we introduce an effective, efficient and fu…

In this review, we discuss recent progress in the explorations of topological materials beyond topological insulators; specifically, we focus on topological crystalline insulators and bulk topological superconductors. The basic concepts, model Hamiltonians, and novel electronic properties of these new topological materials are explained. The key role of symmetries that underlie their topological properties is elucidated. Key issues in their materials realizations are also discussed.
Higher-order topological states (HOTS) have been extensively investigated in classical wave systems. They do not exist in the band gaps of infinite materials, while exhibit as the in-gap localized modes once the infinite materials are truncated to be the finite structures. Here, we will experimentally reveal the origin of HOTSs in acoustic systems. We design the hollow acoustic structures exclusively composed of hinge and corner resonators. We present the experimental proof that, despite the lack of surfaces and bulks, the hollow acoustic structures can still support the topologically protecte…
Topological phases of matter are ubiquitous in crystals, but less is known about their existence in amorphous systems, that lack long-range order. In this perspective, we review the recent progress made on theoretically defining amorphous topological phases and the new phenomenology that they can open. We revisit key experiments suggesting that amorphous topological phases exist in both solid-state and synthetic amorphous systems. We finish by discussing the open questions in the field, that promises to significantly enlarge the set of materials and synthetic systems benefiting from the robust…
Topological phases with insulating bulk and gapless surface or edge modes have attracted much attention because of their fundamental physics implications and potential applications in dissipationless electronics and spintronics. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent progress in the engineering of topologically nontrivial phases (such as $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators, quantum anomalous Hall effects, quantum valley Hall effects \textit{etc.}) in two-dimensional material systems, including quantum wells, atomic crystal layers of elements from group III to group VII, and the transi…
In this work, we construct a generalized Kane model with a new coupling term between itinerant electron spins and local magnetic moments of anti-ferromagnetic ordering in order to describe the low energy effective physics in a large family of anti-ferromagnetic half-Heusler materials. Topological properties of this generalized Kane model is studied and a large variety of topological phases, including Dirac semimetal phase, Weyl semimetal phase, nodal line semimetal phase, type-B triple point semimetal phase, topological mirror (or glide) insulating phase and anti-ferromagnetic topological insu…
Crystalline symmetries play an important role in the classification of band structures, and the rich variety of spatial symmetries in solids leads to various topological crystalline phases (TCPs). However, compared with topological insulators and Dirac/Weyl semimetals, relatively few realistic materials candidates have been proposed for TCPs. Based on our recently developed method for the efficient discovery of topological materials using symmetry indicators, we explore topological materials in five space groups (i.e. SGs87,140,221,191,194), which are indexed by large order strong symmetry bas…
The graphene family materials are two-dimensional staggered monolayers with a gapped energy band structure due to intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. The mass gaps in these materials can be manipulated on-demand via biasing with a static electric field, an off-resonance circularly polarized laser, or an exchange interaction field, allowing the monolayer to be driven through a multitude of topological phase transitions. We investigate the dynamics of spin-orbit coupled graphene family materials to unveil topological phase transition fingerprints embedded in the nonlinear regime and show how these si…
We present a short pedagogical introduction to the physics of Dirac materials, restricted to graphene and two- dimensional topological insulators. We start with a brief reminder of the Dirac and Weyl equations in the particle physics context. Turning to condensed matter systems, semimetallic graphene and various Dirac insulators are introduced, including the Haldane and the Kane-Mele topological insulators. We also discuss briefly experimental realizations in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.
The discovery of topological quantum states marks a new chapter in both condensed matter physics and materials sciences. By analogy to spin electronic system, topological concepts have been extended into phonons, boosting the birth of topological phononics (TPs). Here, we present a high-throughput screening and data-driven approach to compute and evaluate TPs among over 10,000 materials. We have clarified 5014 TP materials and classified them into single Weyl, high degenerate Weyl, and nodal-line (ring) TPs. Among them, three representative cases of TPs have been discussed in detail. Furthermo…
The intense theoretical and experimental interest in topological insulators and semimetals has established band structure topology as a fundamental material property. Consequently, identifying band topologies has become an important, but often challenging problem, with no exhaustive solution at the present time. In this work we compile a series of techniques, some previously known, that allow for a solution to this problem for a large set of the possible band topologies. The method is based on tracking hybrid Wannier charge centers computed for relevant Bloch states, and it works at all levels…
The realization of Dirac and Weyl physics in solids has made topological materials one of the main focuses of condensed matter physics. Recently, the topic of topological nodal line semimetals, materials in which Dirac or Weyl-like crossings along special lines in momentum space create either a closed ring or line of degeneracies, rather than discrete points, has become a hot topic in topological quantum matter. Here we review the experimentally confirmed and theoretically predicted topological nodal line semimetals, focusing in particular on the symmetry protection mechanisms of the nodal lin…
We show that compositions of time-reversal and spatial symmetries, also known as the magnetic-space-group symmetries, protect topological invariants as well as surface states that are distinct from those of all preceding topological states. We obtain, by explicit and exhaustive construction, the topological classification of electronic band insulators that are magnetically ordered for each one of the 1421 magnetic space groups in three dimensions. We have also computed the symmetry-based indicators for each nontrivial class, and, by doing so, establish the complete mapping from symmetry repres…
In this review, We discussed the theoretical foundation and experimental discovery of different topological electronic states of material in condensed matter. At first, we briefly reviewed the conventional electronic states, which have been realized in band theory of solid. Next, the simplest non-trivial insulating phase (Integer Quantum Hall State) and the concept of topological order in condensed matter electronic system have been introduced. In the following sections, we discussed Quantum Spin Hall (QSH) State in two dimensions (2D), and reviewed the theoretical and experimental development…
Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials provide a superior platform for characterizing and tuning topological phases for two reasons: i) existence for multiple cleavable surfaces that enables better experimental identification of topological classification, and ii) stronger response to perturbations such as strain for tuning topological phases compared to higher dimensional crystal structures. In this paper, we present experimental evidence for a room-temperature topological phase transition in the quasi-1D material Bi$_4$I$_4$, mediated via a first order structural transition between two distinc…
Although the richness of spatial symmetries has led to a rapidly expanding inventory of possible topological crystalline (TC) phases of electrons, physical realizations have been slow to materialize due to the practical difficulty to ascertaining band topology in realistic calculations. Here, we integrate the recently established theory of symmetry indicators of band topology into first-principle band-structure calculations, and test it on a databases of previously synthesized crystals. The combined algorithm is found to efficiently unearth topological materials and predict topological propert…
Anisotropic bulk Dirac (or Weyl) cones in three dimensional systems have recently gained intense research interest as they are examples of materials with tilted Dirac (or Weyl) cones indicatig the violation of Lorentz invariance. In contrast, the studies on anisotropic surface Dirac cones in topological materials which contribute to anisotropic carrier mobility have been limited. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we reveal the anisotropic surface Dirac dispersion in a tetradymite material Ti2Te2P on the (001) plane of the Brillioun zone. …
The interplay of magnetism and topology is a key research subject in condensed matter physics and material science, which offers great opportunities to explore emerging new physics, like the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, axion electrodynamics and Majorana fermions. However, these exotic physical effects have rarely been realized in experiment, due to the lacking of suitable working materials. Here we predict that van der Waals layered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-family materials show two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism in the single layer and three-dimensional (3D) $A$-type antiferromagnetism in the…
Non-trivial braid-group representations appear as non-Abelian quantum statistics of emergent Majorana zero modes in one and two-dimensional topological superconductors. Here, we generate such representations with topologically protected domain-wall modes in a classical analogue of the Kitaev superconducting chain, with a particle-hole like symmetry and a Z2 topological invariant. The mid-gap modes are found to exhibit distinct fusion channels and rich non-Abelian braiding properties, which are investigated using a T-junction setup. We employ the adiabatic theorem to explicitly calculate the br…
We review topological properties of two series of ternary compounds AMgBi (A=K, RB, Cs) and ABC with a hexagonal ZrBeSi type structure. The first series of materials AMgBi are predicted to be topological critical Dirac semimetals. The second series of ternary compounds, such as KZnP, BaAgAs, NaAuTe and KHgSb, can be used to realize various topological insulating states and semimetal states. The states are highly tunable as the realization of these topological states depends on the competition between several energy scales, including the energy of atomic orbitals, the energy of crystal splittin…
We show that electron-phonon interactions can alter the topological properties of Dirac insulators and semimetals, both at zero and nonzero temperature. Contrary to the common belief that increasing temperature always destabilizes topological phases, our results highlight instances in which phonons may lead to the appearance of topological surface states above a crossover temperature in a material that has a topologically trivial ground state.

Topological materials present unconventional electronic properties that make them attractive for both basic science and next-generation technological applications. The majority of currently known topological materials have been discovered using methods that involve symmetry-based analysis of the quantum wavefunction. Here we use machine learning to develop a simple-to-use heuristic chemical rule that diagnoses with a high accuracy whether a material is topological using only its chemical formula. This heuristic rule is based on a notion that we term topogivity, a machine-learned numerical valu…
In recent years, noncollinear topological textures have long gained increasing research attentions for their high values of both fundamental researches and potential applications. The recent discovery of intrinsic orders in magnetic and polar two-dimensional van der Waals materials provides a new ideal platform for the investigation of noncollinear topological textures. Here, we review the theoretical and experimental progresses on noncollinear topological textures in two-dimensional van der Waals materials in very recent years. During these years, magnetic skyrmions of both Bloch and Néel typ…
We show that hybrid structures of topological insulators and materials without topological protection can be employed to create perfectly conducting channels hosted in the non-topological part. These states inherit the topological protection from the proximity of the topological insulator but are more fragile to time-reversal symmetry breaking because of their extended character. We explore their formation in the band structure of model hybrid systems as well as realistic heterostructures involving HgTe/CdTe-based two-dimensional topological insulators. Using numerical quantum transport calcul…
We review recent progress in the explorations of topological quantum states of matter in iron-based superconductors. In particular, we focus on the nontrivial topology existing in the band structures and superconducting states of iron's 3d orbitals. The basic concepts, models, materials and experimental results are reviewed. The natural integration between topology and high-temperature superconductivity in iron-based superconductors provides great opportunities to study topological superconductivity and Majorana modes at high temperature.
Topological insulators represent a new quantum state of matter which is characterized by peculiar edge or surface states that show up due to a topological character of the bulk wave functions. This review presents a pedagogical account on topological insulator materials with an emphasis on basic theory and materials properties. After presenting a historical perspective and basic theories of topological insulators, it discusses all the topological insulator materials discovered as of May 2013, with some illustrative descriptions of the developments in materials discoveries in which the author w…

First-principles calculations have demonstrated unprecedented predictive power for material selection and design. In this article, we review recent progress in this field with a focus on the role of first-principles…
Nonlinear optical responses are often used as a probe for studying electronic properties of materials. For topological materials, studies so far focused on the photogalvanic electric current, which requires breaking inversion symmetry. In this work we present a theory of orbital current response in inversion-symmetric topological insulators. We find a symmetry-allowed orbital current response that occurs in centrosymmetric materials under illumination by linearly polarized light. The sign of the dc nonlinear conductivity reflects the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index and the conductivity changes sign at th…
The search for new topological materials and states of matter is presently at the forefront of quantum materials research. One powerful approach to novel topological phases beyond the thermodynamic space is to combine different topological/functional materials into a single materials platform in the form of superlattices. However, despite some previous efforts, there has been a significant gap between theories and experiments in this direction. Here, we provide the first detailed set of experimentally-verifiable phase diagrams of topological superlattices composed of archetypal topological ins…
We show how transitions between different Lifshitz phases in bilayer Dirac materials with and without spin-orbit coupling can be studied by driving the system. The periodic driving is induced by a laser and the resultant phase diagram is studied in the high frequency limit using the Brillouin-Wigner perturbation approach to leading order. The examples of such materials include bilayer graphene and spin-orbit coupled materials such as bilayer silicene. The phase diagrams of the effective static models are analyzed to understand the interplay of topological phase transitions, with changes in the…
Based on first principles calculations, we predicate that Bi on a graphene derivate, $g$-C$_{14}$N$_3$, which involves a $3\times 3$ unit cell of graphene with four C atoms substituted by three N atoms, is a topological insulator with a gap of 50~meV. With the help of maximally localized Wannier functions, we find that the band inversion gap can be determined by examining a pair of interaction parameters between the two involved bands. Accordingly, a phase diagram for band inversion of topological materials as a function of the interactions is obtained. The conclusion also holds for Sb, Ir and…
The theory of symmetry indicators has enabled database searches for topological materials in normal conducting phases, which has led to several encyclopedic topological material databases. To date, such a database for topological superconductors is yet to be achieved because of the lack of information about pairing symmetries of realistic materials. In this work, sidestepping this issue, we tackle an alternative problem: the predictions of topological and nodal superconductivity in materials for each single-valued representation of point groups. Based on recently developed symmetry indicators …
A historical review of spin- and angle-resolved photoemission on topological materials is presented, aimed at readers who are new to the field or who wish to obtain an overview of the activities in the field. The main focus lies on topological insulators, but also Weyl and other semimetals will be discussed. Further it will be explained why the measured spin polarisation from a spin polarised state should always add up to 100% and how spin interference effects influence the measured spin texture.
The discovery of topological insulator phase has ignited massive research interests in novel quantum materials. Topological insulators with superconductivity further invigorate the importance of materials providing the platform to study the interplay between these two unique states. However, the candidates of such materials are rare. Here, we report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of a superconducting material CaBi2 [Tc = 2 K], corroborated by the first principles calculations. Our study reveals the presence of Dirac cones with a topological protection in t…
One of the intriguing properties characteristic to three-dimensional topological materials is the topological magnetoelectric phenomena arising from a topological term called the $θ$ term. Such magnetoelectric phenomena are often termed the axion electrodynamics, since the $θ$ term has exactly the same form as the action describing the coupling between a hypothetical elementary particle, axion, and a photon. The axion was proposed about forty years ago to solve the so-called strong CP problem in quantum chromodynamics, and is now considered as a candidate for dark matter. In this tutorial, we …
Negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (NLMR) is shown to occur in topological materials in the extreme quantum limit, when a magnetic field is applied parallel to the excitation current. We perform pulsed and DC field measurements on Pb1-xSnxSe epilayers where the topological state can be chemically tuned. The NLMR is observed in the topological state, but is suppressed and becomes positive when the system becomes trivial. In a topological material, the lowest N=0 conduction Landau level disperses down in energy as a function of increasing magnetic field, while the N=0 valence Landau level d…
The search for topological phases of matter is evolving towards strongly interacting systems, including magnets and superconductors, where exotic effects emerge from the quantum-level interplay between geometry, correlation and topology. Over the past decade or so, scanning tunnelling microscopy has become a powerful tool to probe and discover emergent topological matter, because of its unprecedented spatial resolution, high-precision electronic detection and magnetic tunability. Scanning tunnelling microscopy can be used to probe various topological phenomena, as well as complement results fr…
Topological condensed matter systems from class A and class AII of the classification table have received classical electromagnetic and mechanical analogs and protected wave-guiding with such systems has been demonstrated experimentally. Here we introduce a map which generates classical analogs for all entries of the classification table, using only passive elements. Physical mechanical models are provided for all strong topological phases in dimension 2, as well as for three classes in dimension 3. This includes topological super-conducting phases, which have never been attempted with classic…
Gapped 2D Dirac materials, in which inversion symmetry is broken by a gap-opening perturbation, feature a unique valley transport regime. The system ground state hosts dissipationless persistent valley currents existing even when topologically protected edge modes are absent or when they are localized due to edge roughness. Topological valley currents in such materials are dominated by bulk currents produced by electronic states just beneath the gap rather than by edge modes. Dissipationless currents induced by an external bias are characterized by a quantized half-integer valley Hall conducti…
We study the topological phase transitions induced in spin-orbit coupled materials with buckling like silicene, germanene, stanene, etc, by circularly polarised light, beyond the high frequency regime, and unearth many new topological phases. These phases are characterised by the spin-resolved topological invariants, $C_0^\uparrow$, $C_0^\downarrow$, $C_π^\uparrow$ and $C_π^\downarrow$, which specify the spin-resolved edge states traversing the gaps at zero quasi-energy and the Floquet zone boundaries respectively. We show that for each phase boundary, and independently for each spin sector, t…
In this work we propose a new route to describe topological excitations in magnetic systems through a single real scalar field. We show here that spherically symmetric structures in two spatial dimensions, which map helical excitations in magnetic materials, admit this formulation and can be used to model skyrmion-like structures in magnetic materials.
Uncertainty relations are studied for a characterization of topological-band insulator transitions in 2D gapped Dirac materials isostructural with graphene. We show that the relative or Kullback-Leibler entropy in position and momentum spaces, and the standard variance-based uncertainty relation, give sharp signatures of topological phase transitions in these systems.
