One of the intriguing properties characteristic to three-dimensional topological materials is the topological magnetoelectric phenomena arising from a topological term called the $θ$ term. Such magnetoelectric phenomena are often termed the axion electrodynamics, since the $θ$ term has exactly the same form as the action describing the coupling between a hypothetical elementary particle, axion, and a photon. The axion was proposed about forty years ago to solve the so-called strong CP problem in quantum chromodynamics, and is now considered as a candidate for dark matter. In this tutorial, we overview theoretical and experimental studies on the axion electrodynamics in three-dimensional topological materials. Starting from the topological magnetoelectric effect in three-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological insulators, we describe the basic properties of static and dynamical axion insulators whose realizations require magnetic orderings. We also discuss the electromagnetic responses of Weyl semimetals with a focus on the chiral anomaly. We extend the concept of the axion electrodynamics in condensed matter to topological superconductors, whose responses to external fields can be described by a gravitational topological term analogous to the $θ$ term.

Topological insulators have been proposed to be best characterized as bulk magnetoelectric materials that show response functions quantized in terms of fundamental physical constants. Here we lower the chemical potential of three-dimensional (3D) Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films to $\sim$ 30 meV above the Dirac point, and probe their low-energy electrodynamic response in the presence of magnetic fields with high-precision time-domain terahertz polarimetry. For fields higher than 5 T, we observed quantized Faraday and Kerr rotations, whereas the DC transport is still semi-classical. A non-trivial Berry phase…
Recently there has been a renewed interest in axionic generalization of electrodynamics due to its application to topological insulators. A low-energy electromagnetic response of these exotic materials was proposed to be described by an axionic term in the Lagrangian. Motivated by this it is of interest to study various aspects of axionic electrodynamics and analyze the universal features of the axionic effects. Here we discuss the axionic modification of generalized electrodynamics with a Lagrangian being an arbitrary function of two electromagnetic invariants. Surprisingly, the qualitative c…
Emergent axion electrodynamics in magneto-electric media is expected to provide novel ways to detect and control material properties with electromagnetic fields. However, despite being studied intensively for over a decade, its theoretical understanding remains mostly confined to the static limit. Here, we introduce a theory of axion electrodynamics at general frequencies. We define a proper optical axion magneto-electric coupling through its relation to optical surface Hall conductivity and provide ways to calculate it in lattice systems. By employing our formulas, we show that axion electrod…
We study the Casimir effect in axion electrodynamics. A finite $θ$-term affects the energy dispersion relation of photon if $θ$ is time and/or space dependent. We focus on a special case with linearly inhomogeneous $θ$ along the $z$-axis. Then we demonstrate that the Casimir force between two parallel plates perpendicular to the $z$-axis can be either attractive or repulsive, dependent on the gradient of $θ$. We call this repulsive component in the Casimir force induced by inhomogeneous $θ$ the anomalous Casimir effect.
Recent works have provided evidence that an axial anomaly can arise in Weyl semimetals. If this is the case, then the electromagnetic response of Weyl semimetals should be governed by the equations of axion electrodynamics. These equations capture both the chiral magnetic and anomalous Hall effects in the limit of linear response, while at higher orders their solutions can provide detectable electromagnetic signatures of the anomaly. In this work, we consider three versions of axion electrodynamics that have been proposed in the Weyl semimetal literature. These versions differ in the form of t…
The orbital motion of electrons in a three-dimensional solid can generate a pseudoscalar magnetoelectric coupling $θ$, a fact we derive for the single-particle case using a recent theory of polarization in weakly inhomogeneous materials. This polarizability $θ$ is the same parameter that appears in the "axion electrodynamics" Lagrangian $Δ{\cal L}_{EM} = (θe^2 / 2 πh) {\bf E} \cdot {\bf B}$, which is known to describe the unusual magnetoelectric properties of the three-dimensional topological insulator ($θ=π$). We compute $θ$ for a simple model that accesses the topological insulator and discu…
We argue that the effective theory for electromagnetic fields in spatially varying meson condensations in dense nuclear and quark matter is given by the axion electrodynamics. We show that one of the helicity states of photons there has the nonrelativistic gapless dispersion relation $ω\sim k^2$ at small momentum, while the other is gapped. This "nonrelativistic photon" may also be realized at the interface between topological and trivial insulators in condensed matter systems.
Based on a first-principles approach, we show that in a single crystal of a prototypical topological insulator such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$ the difference in the work function between adjacent surfaces with different crystal-face orientations generates a built-in electric field around facet edges. Owing to the topological magnetoelectric coupling for a given broken time-reversal symmetry in the crystal, the electric field, in turn, forces effective magnetic dipoles to accumulate along the edges, realizing the facet-edge magnetic ordering. We demonstrate that the predicted magnetic ordering which depen…
In recent attempts to observe axion electrodynamics, much effort has focused on trilayer heterostructures of magnetic topological insulators, and in particular on the examination of a so-called zero Hall plateau, which has misguidedly been overstated as direct evidence of an axion insulator state. We investigate the general notion of axion insulators, which by definition must contain a nontrivial volume to host the axion term. We conduct a detailed magneto-transport analysis of Chern insulators comprised of a single magnetic topological insulator layer of varying thickness as well as trilayer …
The formulation of massless relativistic fermions in lattice gauge theories is hampered by the fundamental problem of species doubling, namely, the rise of spurious fermions modifying the underlying physics. A suitable tailoring of the fermion masses prevents such abundance of species, and leads to the so-called Wilson fermions. Here we show that ultracold atoms provide us with the first controllable realization of these paradigmatic fermions, thus generating a quantum simulator of fermionic lattice gauge theories. We describe a novel scheme that exploits laser-assisted tunneling in a cubic op…
We study the axion in three-dimensional topological insulators with magnetic impurities under finite temperature. We find a stable antiferromagnetic ground state and ferromagnetic metastable state. In both magnetic states, the mass of the axion is found to be up to eV scale and it approaches zero near the phase boundary of the magnetic state. This result applies to both normal and topological insulator phases, i.e., the axion mass is insensitive to the topological states, and it will have a direct impact on the targeted mass range of particle axion dark matter in future experiments.
We report on the scaling behavior of V-doped (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ samples in the quantum anomalous Hall regime for samples of various thickness. While previous quantum anomalous Hall measurements showed the same scaling as expected from a two-dimensional integer quantum Hall state, we observe a dimensional crossover to three spatial dimensions as a function of layer thickness. In the limit of a sufficiently thick layer, we find scaling behavior matching the flow diagram of two parallel conducting topological surface states of a three-dimensional topological insulator each featuring a fractional s…
We propose that the dynamical axion field can be realized in a magnetic topological insulator superlattice or a topological paramagnetic insulator. The magnetic fluctuations of these systems produce a pseudoscalar field which has an axionic coupling to the electromagnetic field, and thus it gives a condensed-matter realization of the axion electrodynamics. Compared to the previously proposed dynamical axion materials where a long range antiferromagnetic order is required, the systems proposed here have the advantage that only a uniform magnetization or a paramagnetic state is needed for the dy…
The dynamical axion field is a new state of quantum matter where the magnetoelectric response couples strongly to its low-energy magnetic fluctuations. It is fundamentally different from an axion insulator with a static quantized magnetoelectric response. The dynamical axion field exhibits many exotic phenomena such as axionic polariton and axion instability. However, these effects have not been experimentally confirmed due to the lack of proper topological magnetic materials. Here by combining analytic models and first-principles calculations, we predict a series of van der Waal layered Mn$_2…
The Lagrangian describing the bulk electromagnetic response of a three-dimensional strong topological insulator contains a topological `axion' term of the form 'θE dot B'. It is often stated (without proof) that the corresponding action is quantized on periodic space-time and therefore invariant under 'θ-> θ+2π'. Here we provide a simple, physically motivated proof of the axion action quantization on the periodic space-time, assuming only that the vector potential is consistent with single-valuedness of the electron wavefunctions in the underlying insulator.
We propose to use ferromagnetic insulator MnBi2Se4/Bi2Se3/antiferromagnetic insulator Mn2Bi2Se5 heterostructures for the realization of the axion insulator state. Importantly, the axion insulator state in such heterostructures only depends on the magnetization of the ferromagnetic insulator and hence can be observed in a wide range of external magnetic field. Using density functional calculations and model Hamiltonian simulations, we find that the top and bottom surfaces have opposite half-quantum Hall conductance, with a sizable global spin gap of 5.1 meV opened for the topological surface st…
It has been pointed out that the axion electrodynamics exhibits instability in the presence of a background electric field. We show that the instability leads to a complete screening of an applied electric field above a certain critical value and the excess energy is converted into a magnetic field. We clarify the physical origin of the screening effect and discuss its possible experimental realization in magnetic materials where magnetic fluctuations play the role of the dynamical axion field.
Antiferromagnetically doped topological insulators (A-TI) are among the candidates to host dynamical axion fields and axion-polaritons; weakly interacting quasiparticles that are analogous to the dark axion, a long sought after candidate dark matter particle. Here we demonstrate that using the axion quasiparticle antiferromagnetic resonance in A-TI's in conjunction with low-noise methods of detecting THz photons presents a viable route to detect axion dark matter with mass 0.7 to 3.5 meV, a range currently inaccessible to other dark matter detection experiments and proposals. The benefits of t…
Topological magnetoelectric effect (TME) is a hallmark response of the topological field theory, which provides a paradigm shift in the study of emergent topological phenomena. However, its direct observation is yet to be realized due to the demanding magnetic configuration required to gap all the surface states. Here, we theoretically propose that the axion insulators with a simple ferromagnetic configuration, such as MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n family, provide an ideal playground to realize TME. In a designed triangular prism geometry, all the surface states are magnetically gapped. Under a vertical …
Axion electrodynamics, first proposed in the context of particle physics, manifests itself in condensed matter physics in the topological field theory description of 3d topological insulators and gives rise to magnetoelectric effect, where applying magnetic (electric) field $\mathbf{B}(\mathbf{E})$ induces polarization (magnetization) $\mathbf{p}(\mathbf{m})$. We use linear response theory to study the associated topological current using the Fu-Kane-Mele model of 3d topological insulators in the presence of time-dependent uniform weak magnetic field. By computing the dynamical current suscept…

Exploration of novel electromagnetic phenomena is a subject of great interest in topological quantum materials. One of the unprecedented effects to be experimentally verified is topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect originating from an unusual coupling of electric and magnetic fields in materials. A magnetic heterostructure of topological insulator (TI) hosts such an exotic magnetoelectric coupling and can be expected to realize the TME effect as an axion insulator. Here we designed a magnetic TI with tricolor structure where a non-magnetic layer of (Bi, Sb)2Te3 is sandwiched by a soft ferr…
The physical reasons in favour of a two dimensional topological model of quantum electrodynamics are discussed. It is shown that in accord with this model there is a new uncertainty relation for photon which is compatible with QED.
A quantized version of the magnetoelectric effect, known as the topological magnetoelectric effect, can exist in a time-reversal invariant topological insulator with all its surface states gapped out by magnetism. This topological phase, called the axion insulator phase, has been theoretically proposed but is still lack of conclusive experimental evidence due to the small signal of topological magnetoelectric effect. In this work, we propose that the dynamical in-plane magnetization in an axion insulator can generate a "pseudo-electric field", which acts on the surface state of topological ins…
Axion, first postulated as a hypothetical particle in high-energy physics, is now extended to describe a novel topological magnetoelectric effect derived from the Chern-Simons theory in condensed matter systems. The recent discovered intrinsic magnetic topological insulators MnBi2Te4 and its derivatives have attracted great attention because of their potential as a material platform to realize such a quantized axion field. Since the magnetic exchange gap can bring the half-quantized anomalous Hall effect at the surface, an axion insulator manifests as quantum anomalous Hall and zero Hall plate…
Resonant scattering of electromagnetic (EM) waves by small particles is considered as one of the basic problem in metamaterial science. At present, special subwavelength resonators are considered as structural elements in chiral and bianisotropic metamaterials. There is a general consensus that these small scatterers behave like "artificial atoms", meta-atoms, with strong electrical and magnetic responses and an interconnection between these responses. However, the observed effect of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in these meta-atoms is not associated with the near-field manipulation properties…
Three-dimensional topological insulators or axion insulators exhibit the topological magnetoelectric effect, which is isotropic with a universal coefficient of proportionality quantized in units of $e^2/2h$. Here we study the finite-size effect of topological magnetoelectric effect, and find the magnetoelectric coefficients are anisotropic, namely $α_{xx}\neqα_{zz}$. Both of them are shown to converge to a quantized value when the thickness of topological insulator film $d$ increases reaching the three-dimensional bulk limit. The nonzero value of $(α_{xx}-α_{zz})\propto1/d$ could be measured b…
Many magnetic point-group symmetries induce a topological classification on crystalline insulators, dividing them into those that have a nonzero quantized Chern-Simons magnetoelectric coupling ("axion-odd" or "topological"), and those that do not ("axion-even" or "trivial"). For time-reversal or inversion symmetries, the resulting topological state is usually denoted as a "strong topological insulator" or an "axion insulator" respectively, but many other symmetries can also protect this "axion $Z_2$" index. Topological states are often insightfully characterized by choosing one crystallographi…
Strong coupling between cavity photons and various excitations in condensed matters boosts the field of light-matter interaction and generates several exciting sub-fields, such as cavity optomechanics and cavity magnon polariton. Axion quasiparticles, emerging in topological insulators, were predicted to strongly couple with the light and generate the so-called axion polariton. Here, we demonstrate that there arises a gapless level attraction in cavity axion polariton of antiferromagnetic topological insulators, which originates from a nonlinear interaction between axion and the odd-order reso…
We investigate the instability due to dynamical axion field near the topological phase transition of insulators. We first point out that the amplitude of dynamical axion field is bounded for magnetic insulators in general, which suppresses the axion instability. Near the topological phase transition, however, the axion field may have a large fluctuation, which decreases the critical electric field for the instability and increases the axion induced magnetic flux density. Using two different model Hamiltonians, we report the electromagnetic response of the axion field in details.
Topological photonics provides a new paradigm in studying cavity quantum electrodynamics with robustness to disorder. In this work, we demonstrate the coupling between single quantum dots and the second-order topological corner state. Based on the second-order topological corner state, a topological photonic crystal cavity is designed and fabricated into GaAs slabs with quantum dots embedded. The coexistence of corner state and edge state with high quality factor close to 2000 is observed. The enhancement of photoluminescence intensity and emission rate are both observed when the quantum dot i…
More than forty years ago, axion was postulated as an elementary particle with a low mass and weak interaction in particle physics to solve the strong $\mathcal{CP}$ (charge conjugation and parity) puzzle. Axions are also considered as a possible component of dark matter of the universe. However, the existence of axions in nature has not been confirmed. Interestingly, axions arise as pseudoscalar fields derived from the Chern-Simons theory in condensed matter physics. In antiferromagnetic insulators, the axion field can become dynamical induced by spin-wave excitations and exhibits rich exotic…
