It is common that a Sobolev space defined on $\mathbb{R}^m$ has a non-compact embedding into an $L^p$-space, but it has subspaces for which this embedding becomes compact. There are three well known cases of such subspaces, the Rellich compactness, for a subspace of functions on a bounded domain (or an unbounded domain, sufficiently thin at infinity), the Strauss compactness, for a subspace of radially symmetric functions in $\mathbb{R}^m$, and the weighted Sobolev spaces. Known generalizations of Strauss compactness include subspaces of functions with block-radial symmetry, subspaces of functions with certain symmetries on Riemannian manifolds, as well as similar subspaces of more general Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. Presence of symmetries can be interpreted in terms of the rising critical Sobolev exponent corresponding to the smaller effective dimension of the quotient space.
We define the notion of colocally weakly differentiable maps from a manifold $M$ to a manifold $N$. If $p \ge 1$ and $M$ and $N$ are endowed with a Riemannian metric, this allows us to define intrinsically the homogeneous Sobolev space $\dot{W}^{1, p} (M, N)$. This new definition is equivalent with the definition by embedding in the Euclidean space and with the definition of Sobolev maps into a metric space. The colocal weak derivative is an approximate derivative. The colocal weak differentiability is stable under the suitable weak convergence. The Sobolev spaces can be endowed with various i…
The bounded variation seminorm and the Sobolev seminorm on compact manifolds are represented as a limit of fractional Sobolev seminorms. This establishes a characterization of functions of bounded variation and of Sobolev functions on compact manifolds. As an application the special case of sets of finite perimeter is considered.
Given a connected Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{N}$, an \(m\)--dimensional Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}$ which is either compact or the Euclidean space, $p\in [1, +\infty)$ and $s\in (0,1]$, we establish, for the problems of surjectivity of the trace, of weak-bounded approximation, of lifting and of superposition, that qualitative properties satisfied by every map in a nonlinear Sobolev space $W^{s,p}(\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{N})$ imply corresponding uniform quantitative bounds. This result is a nonlinear counterpart of the classical Banach--Steinhaus uniform boundedness principle in linear B…
We characterize the restrictions of first order Sobolev functions to regular subsets of a homogeneous metric space and prove the existence of the corresponding linear extension operator.
Liftings of Sobolev maps into closed Riemannian manifolds via double coverings and minimal connections relative to planar sets, with an application to ferronematics
We define the notion of higher-order colocally weakly differentiable maps from a manifold $M$ to a manifold $N$. When $M$ and $N$ are endowed with Riemannian metrics, $p\ge 1$ and $k\ge 2$, this allows us to define the intrinsic higher-order homogeneous Sobolev space $\dot{W}^{k,p}(M,N)$. We show that this new intrinsic definition is not equivalent in general with the definition by an isometric embedding of $N$ in a Euclidean space; if the manifolds $M$ and $N$ are compact, the intrinsic space is a larger space than the one obtained by embedding. We show that a necessary condition for the dens…
Given $n \in \mathbb{N}_*$, a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ and a Sobolev map $u \in W^{n/(n + 1), n + 1} (\mathbb{S}^n; M)$, we construct a map $U$ in the Sobolev-Marcinkiewicz (or Lorentz-Sobolev) space $W^{1, (n + 1, \infty)} (\mathbb{B}^{n + 1}; M)$ such that $u = U$ in the sense of traces on $\mathbb{S}^{n} = \partial \mathbb{B}^{n + 1}$ and whose derivative is controlled: for every $λ> 0$, $$ λ^{n + 1} \big\vert\big\{ x \in \mathbb{B}^{n + 1} : \vert D U (x)\vert > λ\big\}\big\vert \le γ\Big(\int_{\mathbb{S}^n}\int_{\mathbb{S}^n} \frac{\vert u (y) - u (z)\vert^{n + 1}}{\vert y - z\vert…
For each $p>1$ and each positive integer $m$ we use divided differences to give intrinsic characterizations of the restriction of the Sobolev space $W^m_p(R)$ to an arbitrary closed subset of the real line.
For each $p>n$ we use local oscillations and doubling measures to give intrinsic characterizations of the restriction of the Sobolev space $W_p^1(R^n)$ to an arbitrary closed subset of $R^n$.
We study totally bounded subsets in weighted variable exponent amalgam and Sobolev spaces. Moreover, this paper includes several detailed generalized results of some compactness criterions in these spaces.
We introduce an operator $\mathbf{S}$ on vector-valued maps $u$ which has the ability to capture the relevant topological information carried by $u$. In particular, this operator is defined on maps that take values in a closed submanifold $N$ of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^m$, and coincides with the distributional Jacobian in case $N$ is a sphere. The range of $\mathbf{S}$ is a set of maps whose values are flat chains with coefficients in a suitable normed abelian group. In this paper, we use $\mathbf{S}$ to characterise strong limits of smooth, $N$-valued maps with respect to Sobolev norm…
We study the relationship between quasihomotopy and path homotopy for Sobolev maps between manifolds. We employ singular integrals on manifolds to show that, in the critical exponent case, path homotopy implies quasihomotopy - and observe the rather surprising fact that $n$-quasihomotopic maps need not be path homotopic. We also study the case where the target is an aspherical manifold, e.g. a manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature, and the contrasting case of the target being a sphere.
We investigate Sobolev and Hardy inequalities, specifically weighted Minerbe's type estimates, in noncompact complete connected Riemannian manifolds whose geometry is described by an isoperimetric profile. In particular, we assume that the manifold satisfies the $p$-hyperbolicity property, stated in terms of a necessary integral Dini condition on the isoperimetric profile. Our method seems to us to combine sharply the knowledge of the isoperimetric profile and the optimal Bliss type Hardy inequality depending on the geometry of the manifold. We recover the well known best Sobolev constant in t…
For each $p>2$ we give intrinsic characterizations of the restriction of the homogeneous Sobolev space $L^1_p(R^2)$ to an arbitrary finite subset $E$ of $R^2$. The trace criterion is expressed in terms of certain weighted oscillations of the second order with respect to a measure generated by the Menger curvature of triangles with vertices in $E$.
Let $\M$ be a complete, connected noncompact manifold with bounded geometry. Under a condition near infinity, we prove that the Log Sobolev functional (\ref{logfanhan}) has an extremal function decaying exponentially near infinity. We also prove that an extremal function may not exist if the condition is violated. This result has the following consequences. 1. It seems to give the first example of connected, complete manifolds with bounded geometry where a standard Log Sobolev inequality does not have an extremal. 2. It gives a negative answer to the open question on the existence of extremal …
We develop a general method to calculate entropy numbers of standard Sobolev's classes on an arbitrary compact homogeneous Riemannian manifold. Our method is essentially based on a detailed study of geometric characteristics of norms induced by subspaces of harmonics. The method's possibilities are not confined to the statements proved but can be applied in studying more general problems such as entropy of multiplier operators. As an application, we establish sharp orders of entropy of Sobolev's classes and respective n-widths.
We determine upper asymptotic estimates of Kolmogorov and linear $n$-widths of unit balls in Sobolev and Besov norms in $L_{p}$-spaces on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds. For compact homogeneous manifolds, we establish estimates which are asymptotically exact, for the natural ranges of indices. The proofs heavily rely on our previous results such as: estimates for the near-diagonal localization of the kernels of elliptic operators, Plancherel-Polya inequalities on manifolds of bounded geometry, cubature formulas with positive coefficients and uniform estimates on Clebsch-Gordon coefficient…
Given $p \in (1,\infty)$, let $(\operatorname{X},\operatorname{d},μ)$ be a metric measure space with uniformly locally doubling measure $μ$ supporting a weak local $(1,p)$-Poincaré inequality. For each $θ\in [0,p)$, we characterize the trace space of the Sobolev $W^{1}_{p}(\operatorname{X})$-space to lower codimension-$θ$ content regular closed subsets $S \subset \operatorname{X}$. In particular, if the space $(\operatorname{X},\operatorname{d},μ)$ is Ahlfors $Q$-regular for some $Q \geq 1$ and $p \in (Q,\infty)$, then we get an intrinsic description of the trace-space of the Sobolev $W^{1}_{p…
Several possible notions of Hardy-Sobolev spaces on a Riemannian manifold with a doubling measure are considered. Under the assumption of a Poincaré inequality, the space $\Mone$, defined by Hajłasz, is identified with a Hardy-Sobolev space defined in terms of atoms. Decomposition results are proved for both the homogeneous and the nonhomogeneous spaces.

Defect of compactness, relative to an embedding of two Banach spaces E and F, is a difference between a weakly convergent sequence in E and its weak limit taken up to a remainder that vanishes in the norm of F. For Sobolev embeddings in particular, defect of compactness is expressed as a profile decomposition - a sum of terms, called elementary concentrations, with asymptotically disjoint supports. We discuss a profile decomposition for the Sobolev space of a Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, which is a sum of elementary concentrations associated with concentration profiles defined on…

We review the current state of the art concerning the characterization of traces of the spaces $W^{1, p} (\mathbb{B}^{m-1}\times (0,1), \mathcal{N})$ of Sobolev mappings with values into a compact manifold $\mathcal{N}$. In particular, we exhibit a new analytical obstruction to the extension, which occurs when $p < m$ is an integer and the homotopy group $π_p (\mathcal{N})$ is non trivial. On the positive side, we prove the surjectivity of the trace operator when the fundamental group $π_1 (\mathcal{N})$ is finite and $π_2 (\mathcal{N}) \simeq \dotsb \simeq π_{\lfloor p - 1 \rfloor} (\mathcal{…
We have recently introduced the trimming property for a complete Riemannian manifold $N^{n}$ as a necessary and sufficient condition for bounded maps to be strongly dense in $W^{1, p}(B^m; N^{n})$ when $p \in \{1, \dotsc, m\}$. We prove in this note that even under a weaker notion of approximation, namely the weak sequential convergence, the trimming property remains necessary for the approximation in terms of bounded maps. The argument involves the construction of a Sobolev map having infinitely many analytical singularities going to infinity.
A basilar property and a useful tool in the theory of Sobolev spaces is the density of smooth compactly supported functions in the space $W^{k,p}(\R^n)$ (i.e. the functions with weak derivatives of orders $0$ to $k$ in $L^p$). On Riemannian manifolds, it is well known that the same property remains valid under suitable geometric assumptions. However, on a complete non-compact manifold it can fail to be true in general, as we prove in this paper. This settles an open problem raised for instance by E. Hebey [\textit{Nonlinear analysis on manifolds: Sobolev spaces and inequalities}, Courant Lectu…
We investigate the validity, as well as the failure, of Sobolev-type inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds under suitable bounds on the sectional and the Ricci curvatures. We prove that if the sectional curvatures are bounded from above by a negative power of the distance from a fixed pole (times a negative constant), then all the $ L^p $ inequalities that interpolate between Poincaré and Sobolev hold for radial functions provided the power lies in the interval $ (-2,0) $. The Poincaré inequality was established by H.P. McKean under a constant negative bound from above on the sectional cur…
For each $p>1$ and each positive integer $m$ we give intrinsic characterizations of the restriction of the Sobolev space $W^m_p(R)$ and homogeneous Sobolev space $L^m_p(R)$ to an arbitrary closed subset $E$ of the real line. In particular, we show that the classical one dimensional Whitney extension operator is "universal" for the scale of $L^m_p(R)$ spaces in the following sense: for every $p\in(1,\infty]$ it provides almost optimal $L^m_p$-extensions of functions defined on $E$. The operator norm of this extension operator is bounded by a constant depending only on $m$. This enables us to pr…

We study reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS) on a Riemannian manifold. In particular, we discuss under which condition Sobolev spaces are RKHS and characterize their reproducing kernels. Further, we introduce and discuss a class of smoother RKHS that we call diffusion spaces. We illustrate the general results with a number of detailed examples.
We study properties of the classical fractional Sobolev spaces (or Bessel potential spaces) on non-Lipschitz subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We investigate the extent to which the properties of these spaces, and the relations between them, that hold in the well-studied case of a Lipschitz open set, generalise to non-Lipschitz cases. Our motivation is to develop the functional analytic framework in which to formulate and analyse integral equations on non-Lipschitz sets. In particular we consider an application to boundary integral equations for wave scattering by planar screens that are non-Lipschit…
The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture states that, on every $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $, the isoperimetric inequality holds with Euclidean optimal constant, and any set attaining equality is necessarily isometric to a Euclidean ball. This conjecture was settled, with positive answer, for $n \le 4$. It was also shown that its validity in dimension $n$ ensures that every $p$-Sobolev inequality ($ 1 < p < n $) holds on $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Euclidean optimal constant. In this paper we address the problem of classifying all Cartan-Hadamard manifolds supporting an optimal fun…
We study Sobolev type spaces defined in terms of sharp maximal functions on Ahlfors regular subsets of the Euclidean space and the relation between these spaces and traces of classical Sobolev spaces.
Given a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold $N^n$, we investigate whether the set of bounded Sobolev maps $(W^{1, p} \cap L^\infty) (Q^m; N^n)$ on the cube $Q^m$ is strongly dense in the Sobolev space $W^{1, p} (Q^m; N^n)$ for $1 \le p \le m$. The density always holds when $p$ is not an integer. When $p$ is an integer, the density can fail, and we prove that a quantitative trimming property is equivalent with the density. This new condition is ensured for example by a uniform Lipschitz geometry of $N^n$. As a byproduct, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong density of …
We study fractional Sobolev and Besov spaces on noncompact Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. Usually, these spaces are defined via geodesic normal coordinates which, depending on the problem at hand, may often not be the best choice. We consider a more general definition subject to different local coordinates and give sufficient conditions on the corresponding coordinates resulting in equivalent norms. Our main application is the computation of traces on submanifolds with the help of Fermi coordinates. Our results also hold for corresponding spaces defined on vector bundles of bounde…
We study global regularity properties of Sobolev homeomorphisms on $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds under the assumption of $p$-integrability of its first weak derivatives in degree $p\geq n-1$. We prove that inverse homeomorphisms have integrable first weak derivatives. For the case $p>n$ we obtain necessary conditions for existence of Sobolev homeomorphisms between manifolds. These necessary conditions based on Poincaré type inequality: $$ \inf_{c\in \mathbb R} \|u-c\mid L_{\infty}(M)\|\leq K \|u\mid L^1_{\infty}(M)\|. $$ As a corollary we obtain the following geometrical necessary condi…
Let $S \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$ be an arbitrary nonempty compact set such that the $d$-Hausdorff content $\mathcal{H}^{d}_{\infty}(S) > 0$ for some $d \in (0,n]$. For each $p \in (\max\{1,n-d\},n]$, an almost sharp intrinsic description of the trace space $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})|_{S}$ of the Sobolev space $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ to the set $S$ is obtained. Furthermore, for each $p \in (\max\{1,n-d\},n]$ and $\varepsilon \in (0, \min\{p-(n-d),p-1\})$, new bounded linear extension operators from the trace space $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})|_{S}$ into the space $W_{p-\varepsilon}^{1}(\mathbb{…
Given a compact manifold $N^n$, an integer $k \in \mathbb{N}_*$ and an exponent $1 \le p < \infty$, we prove that the class $C^\infty(\overline{Q}^m; N^n)$ of smooth maps on the cube with values into $N^n$ is dense with respect to the strong topology in the Sobolev space $W^{k, p}(Q^m; N^n)$ when the homotopy group $π_{\lfloor kp \rfloor}(N^n)$ of order $\lfloor kp \rfloor$ is trivial. We also prove the density of maps that are smooth except for a set of dimension $m - \lfloor kp \rfloor - 1$, without any restriction on the homotopy group of $N^n$
We are concerned here with Sobolev-type spaces of vector-valued functions. For an open subset $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ and a Banach space $V$, we compare the classical Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(Ω, V)$ with the so-called Sobolev-Reshetnyak space $R^{1,p}(Ω, V)$. We see that, in general, $W^{1,p}(Ω, V)$ is a closed subspace of $R^{1,p}(Ω, V)$. As a main result, we obtain that $W^{1,p}(Ω, V)=R^{1,p}(Ω, V)$ if, and only if, the Banach space $V$ has the Radon-Nikodým property
This paper concerns the following question: given a subset $E$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with empty interior and an integrability parameter $1<p<\infty$, what is the maximal regularity $s\in\mathbb{R}$ for which there exists a non-zero distribution in the Bessel potential Sobolev space $H^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ that is supported in $E$? For sets of zero Lebesgue measure we apply well-known results on set capacities from potential theory to characterise the maximal regularity in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of $E$, sharpening previous results. Furthermore, we provide a full classification of all poss…
For each $m\ge 1$ and $p>2$ we characterize bounded simply connected Sobolev $L^m_p$-extension domains $Ω\subset R^2$. Our criterion is expressed in terms of certain intrinsic subhyperbolic metrics in $Ω$. Its proof is based on a series of results related to the existence of special chains of squares joining given points $x$ and $y$ in $Ω$. An important geometrical ingredient for obtaining these results is a new "Square Separation Theorem". It states that under certain natural assumptions on the relative positions of a point $x$ and a square $S\subsetΩ$ there exists a similar square $Q\subsetΩ…
Let $S \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$ be a~closed set such that for some $d \in [0,n]$ and $\varepsilon > 0$ the~$d$-Hausdorff content $\mathcal{H}^{d}_{\infty}(S \cap Q(x,r)) \geq \varepsilon r^{d}$ for all cubes~$Q(x,r)$ centered in~$x \in S$ with side length $2r \in (0,2]$. For every $p \in (1,\infty)$, denote by $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ the classical Sobolev space on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. We give an~intrinsic characterization of the restriction $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})|_{S}$ of the space $W_{p}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ to~the set $S$ provided that $p > \max\{1,n-d\}$. Furthermore, we prove the exist…
We give a simple characterization of chaos for weighted composition $C_0$-semigroups on $L^p_ρ(Ω)$ for an open interval $Ω\subseteq\mathbb{R}$. Moreover, we characterize chaos for these classes of $C_0$-semigroups on the closed subspace $W^{1,p}_*(Ω)$ of the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(Ω)$ for a bounded interval $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}$. These characterizations simplify previously obtained characterization of chaos for these classes of $C_0$-semigroups.
We describe a class of Sobolev $W^k_p$-extension domains $Ω\subset R^n$ determined by a certain inner subhyperbolic metric in $Ω$. This enables us to characterize finitely connected Sobolev $W^1_p$-extension domains in $R^2$ for each $p>2$.
For each $p>n$ we use local oscillations to give intrinsic characterizations of the trace of the Sobolev space $W^1_p(Ω)$ to the boundary of an arbitrary domain $Ω\subset R^n$.
Given a compact manifold $N^n \subset \mathbb{R}^ν$, $s \ge 1$ and $1 \le p < \infty$, we prove that the class of smooth maps on the cube with values into $N^n$ is strongly dense in the fractional Sobolev space $W^{s, p}(Q^m; N^n)$ when $N^n$ is $\lfloor sp \rfloor$ simply connected. For $sp$ integer, we prove weak density of smooth maps with values into $N^n$ when $N^n$ is $sp - 1$ simply connected. The proofs are based on the existence of a retraction of $\mathbb{R}^ν$ onto $N^n$ except for a small subset of $N^n$ and on a pointwise estimate of fractional derivatives of composition of maps i…
We investigate two density questions for Sobolev, Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces on rough sets. Our main results, stated in the simplest Sobolev space setting, are that: (i) for an open set $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, $\mathcal{D}(Ω)$ is dense in $\{u\in H^s(\mathbb R^n):{\rm supp}\, u\subset \overlineΩ\}$ whenever $\partialΩ$ has zero Lebesgue measure and $Ω$ is "thick" (in the sense of Triebel); and (ii) for a $d$-set $Γ\subset\mathbb R^n$ ($0<d<n$), $\{u\in H^{s_1}(\mathbb R^n):{\rm supp}\, u\subset Γ\}$ is dense in $\{u\in H^{s_2}(\mathbb R^n):{\rm supp}\, u\subset Γ\}$ whenever $-\frac{n-d…
The purpose of this work is to describe an abstract theory of Hardy-Sobolev spaces on doubling Riemannian manifolds via an atomic decomposition. We study the real interpolation of these spaces with Sobolev spaces and finally give applications to Riesz inequalities.
We generalize Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu's asymptotic formula for fractional Sobolev functions, in the setting of abstract metric measure spaces, under the assumption that at almost every point the tangent space in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff sense is a finite dimensional Banach space or a Carnot group. Our result not only covers the known results concerning Euclidean spaces, weighted Riemannian manifolds and finite dimensional Banach spaces, but also extends Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu's formula to $\rcdkn$ spaces and sub-Riemannian manifolds.
We study the relation between Sobolev inequalities for differential forms on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and the $L_{q,p}$-cohomology of that manifold. The $L_{q,p}$-cohomology of $(M,g)$ is defined to be the quotient of the space of closed differential forms in $L^p(M)$ modulo the exact forms which are exterior differentials of forms in $L^q(M)$.
We establish trace theorems for function spaces defined on general Ahlfors regular metric spaces $Z$. The results cover the Triebel-Lizorkin spaces and the Besov spaces for smoothness indices $s<1,$ as well as the first order Hajłasz-Sobolev space $M^{1,p}(Z)$. They generalize the classical results from the Euclidean setting, since the traces of these function spaces onto any closed Ahlfors regular subset $F \subset Z$ are Besov spaces defined intrinsically on $F$. Our method employs the definitions of the function spaces via hyperbolic fillings of the underlying metric space.
